Rangers Notes: Afternoon Updates

From Steve Zipay at Blue Notes:

  • Sean Avery (knee) will make the trip but not play against the Penguins, head coach John Tortorella said, and defenseman Alexei Semenov may not do either.
  • The Rangers will watch the Penguins' pre-game banner raising and Cup ceremony from the visiting bench.
  • Michael Del Zotto has been assigned No. 4, the number he wore in juniors in tribute to Bobby Orr. (Note from Jim: Also following in the steps of a few other Rangers defensemen who wore this number and were pretty damn good: Arnie Brown, Bill Gadsby Ron Greschner, and Kevin Lowe)

From Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants:

  • Plenty of work on the power play during this morning's skate: Michael Del Zotto-Ales Kotalik, Marian Gaborik-Vinny Prospal-Ryan Callahan comprised the first unit.
  • Henrik Lundqvist had a good day yesterday, first being part of the 10-man Ranger crew that taped the David Letterman Top 10, then attending Bruce Springsteen's show at Giants Stadium.
  • Also tomorrow, Tortorella will announce his alternate captains. Tortorella first will tell the team at their morning meeting - the coach does not believe in soliciting player opinion or votes on the matter and the decision has been rendered in conjuction with GM Glen Sather, and assistants Mike Sullivan and Jim Schoenfeld - before telling the media, most likely after tomorrow's morning skate.

I think most of us will agree it will probably be Ryan Callahan and Marian Gaborik getting the "A's" although they could have home and road alternates, teams have done that in the past. Perhaps Marc Staal and Callahan at home, Gaborik and Vinny Prospal on the road?

Don't forget, the season preview continues tonight on Ranger Crisis Radio at 9 PM. Mouth has a few guests lined up, including Leslie Treff from Hockey's Future. She will be providing her expert opinion on Ranger prospects. Make sure you listen in, see you then.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Avery get the A either, but I think to a lot of people it wouldn’t stand for Alternate

Avery doesn’t always set a good example as we all know lol

"Malik now." "6 foot 6, 238, not a noted goal scorer but he's gonna give it a shot here." "Malik has not scored this year. In on Kolzig, faked it....SCORES"

I know he won’t get it, but if he did I bet he’d be more discipline. I’m betting he’s going to be more discipline this year anyway. I’m hoping the refs don’t call everything against him like they did last year.

last year

was disgusting. he would be thrown intot he goalie and hed get a penalty

That first PP unit looks like a recipe for a lot of short-handed goals. One defenseman and it’s 19 year-old Del Zotto?

by XLII on Oct 1, 2009 3:50 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t know the numbers but it sure seemed like we gave up a lot of shorthanded golas last year? At least we should be able to score some this year which I know we didn’t.

As opposed to the unit that gave up 13 last year?

yeah I gotta say XLII

things can’t be worse than last year when Redden, Rozsival and Girardi at the point. Give the kids a change lets try not to be so negative before the season even starts.

at del zotto has speed to get back unlike redden or rozi.

by mleetch352 on Oct 1, 2009 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I am well aware of the trouble we had last year giving up SH goals, I just don’t thinking having Del Zotto out there as our lone blue-liner is the best solution.

MDZ only the 3rd teenager on the blueline in a long time for the blueshirts with the other two being Leetch who turned 20 right after and Maloney.

If...

If Cally gets an A, I’m totally buying his blue jersey with the A on it.

If Avery gets an A, I’ll just have to get the patch added to my white jersey.
I’ll also be shocked & surprised. In a good way.

really get it stitched on? where??

by Moshe52792 on Oct 1, 2009 9:36 PM EDT up reply actions

is cally goin to try and develop into an around the net guy with this unit? i tend to think of him as more of a slot guy. i think drury would mesh better with this unti bc hes better around the net and with all the talent on this line u need someone to mix it up in front of the net to cause commotion and net some cheapo rebounds. thats drurys bread and butter right there

by Conway on Oct 1, 2009 5:35 PM EDT reply actions

Cally

I think cally scores most of his goals from in close or driving to the net so him i think this unit fits him perfectly

by ae2cdk on Oct 1, 2009 6:27 PM EDT up reply actions

i think he means more in the way gravy used to score in terms of being stationed there not in the way cally rushes the net and scores.

by mleetch352 on Oct 1, 2009 6:36 PM EDT up reply actions

agreed

but Callahan def has the shot to score from outside the slot. We just gotta get him time there.

um

isnt prospal the dirty guy infront of the net.

actually if u ask me. id lvoe to have AA right infront of the net. hes big and has awesome skill.

mdz and kotalik at the point. prospal and gaborik. and AA infront of the net

2nd line unit?

my guess would be drury dubinsky higgins gilroy staal/redden depending on which redden shows up this year. anisimov could steal a spot with solid play

by Conway on Oct 1, 2009 5:41 PM EDT reply actions

definitly suprised callys going to get an A..i was thinkin more of gaborik and higgns

Rangers ALLL DAYYY

nobody says he is to this point…it is the hope that he does. announcement wont be made til tomorrow.

by mleetch352 on Oct 1, 2009 6:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Cally with an “A” is a no brainer,he’s the hardest working guy on the team.I have a bad feeling Rosi or Redden are gonna get one, maybe as some kinda “motivation” tool, just watch,I hope I’m not right but then again…………..Gabby shouldn’t,Staal should be in the running along with more PP time since Torts has wanted him to up his offense,I think it’d be smart having him out there. There’s my 2 cents!

by JM82 on Oct 1, 2009 6:06 PM EDT reply actions

i wouldnt

give prospal cause most likely hes gonna be a 1 year and out guy.

i think it coems down to.

gaborik/staal/callahan/AVERY! with maybe an oddball shot at prospal since torts knows him and supposxedly torts likes to have liasons in the locker room..

true

but i dont think he came in here with the intension of only staying a year.

plus. naslund was like a ridiculously good player back in the day. like nhl scoring leader. prospal is a good player, but hes not that.

what if...

brashear got an “A”….that would be like sticking the middle finger to every ranger fan

by nutz_35 on Oct 1, 2009 11:51 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t think he’ll get an “A”. Would I be surprised if he got one? Kind of. Not that it would be bad, but I think others noted already should have a higher edge to the “A”.

I don’t think it would be “like sticking the middle finger to every Rangers fan”.

Brashear

would be the last person to get one and yes that would be a travesty if he received an A some how come on guys , he was a healthy scratch in so many Caps games last year.
Staal/Cally and Gaborik definitely get the ’A’s, i would love to see Avery with one that would be great haha.

by louielounz1 on Oct 2, 2009 2:38 AM EDT reply actions

WOW

I don’t know if this is old news..but the Rangers are 3rd fiddle for me right now. MDZ getting #4 pretty much assures that he’s on the big squad correct?

Good to see he’s impressed enough to make it and also congrats to him…but he’s 19.

Hope he really is ready. Been waiting to find out who I’m going put on my white Rangers authentic, a Del Zotto #4 sounds just about right.
