POST-GAME QUOTES

John Tortorella on the third period...

"We have had some good third periods and we had another one tonight and I think the conditioning had something to do with it.  That is an important part, finishing the game.  We felt we were fortunate, Hank made some good saves there in the second.  We just wanted to get back on the attack and try to play in their end zone.  I don't know if it is conditioning related but we had another good third period so that is good news."

Chris Drury on the team's early start...

"Like I said before game 1, you are not going through a camp like that and not coming out together as a group...as physically demanding as it was.  It forces you to come together.  You can't do it alone."

Henrik Lundqvist on the defense...

"Our defensive game actually improved.  It is tougher for teams to create scoring chances, I think, when we stay aggressive, when we play the way we want to play.  We can see that already last year when Torts (Coach John Tortorella) came in and we changed our style of play.  It is tougher for teams to create chances.  When we play the way we play, we are great offensively and defensively.  It has been good.  They have done a great job the last couple of games."

Henrik Lundqvist on the offense...

"It is a good feeling to know you have guys that can score when the game is really tight.  This year we have a lot of guys who can step up and score.  We had a couple of goals tonight that were mentally really important.  Not only the first line, (we have) three or four lines that can score - it is huge for us."

Dan Girardi on the team...

"I think we feel pretty good.  At the same time we have to respect our opponents (and) make sure we play hard.  We have to keep working hard every day in practice.  Good things will come with hard work."

nothing but sunshines and rainbows, great day to be a rangers fan. seems as if all the peopl that came out of the gate(girardi, rosi) are pickin it up a bit. if rosi gets his sh*t completely together( know hes played better but i am still suspicous) we will have no dead weight on this team.

now we just have to get higgins and lisin to net a few. higgins especially, he is way overdue

Higgins is playing well and keeps getting chances, but needs to start scoring soon or his could lose his confidence

by MattPwrcf1 on Oct 13, 2009 8:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Scoring has definitely improved from last year and the the thing is that Higgins and Lisin have not even scored yet. Once they get going we should be even better.

Del Zotto

He looks good in my opinion both offensively and decent defensively. Have a feeling he is here to stay…..

Agreed, agreed, and agreed. But let’s face it, who would replace him anyway?

My only worry is what happened las year – we went on a huge streak early and then went into hibernation for the winter only to resurrect ourselves in the last few weeks. If this team is doing this after the Olympics, then I’ll be impressed.

by DC Ranger on Oct 13, 2009 9:26 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah but you can’t compare last year’s team to this one. Completely different animal. Last year’s team got off to a hot start, but it was smoke and mirrors. 2-1 wins, 1-0 wins, shootout wins. We knew that team last year was extremely flawed offensively, and that it would catch up to them.

smoke and mirrors

is exactly the way to describe last years start. if we werent unbeatable in shootouts then the start probably wouldve been avg lol

by Conway on Oct 13, 2009 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions

not to panic too early, but do also have to worry probably more than a lot of clubs about the toll the olympics are going to take because i figure we could have maybe 7 players in the olympics with Hank, Gabby, Prospal, Staal, Cally, Drury, Dubi, and Higgins and that can wear us down for late in the year and the playoffs. Just worry about an overload for Hank and Gabby especially.

A lot of the other teams in the East we will compete with will have some players play but not as many imo if all those guys go with Prospal and Higgins possibly being the least likely of them. Washington has Ovie, Semin, Green and Backstrom. Philly has Richards, Carter, Pronger, Timonen, Carle?. Pitt has Crosby, Malkin, Gonchar, Fleury? Guerin? I could be missing others.

sorry, 8 possible players since i added Prospal in thinking about it later.

Depth will help...

I know Tort’s likes to play his top 3 lines, but with all the depth both here and in Hartford I think he will have no problem resting those players. Especially with possibly the best back-up goaltender in the league.

Last season’s streak was completely different. Alot of those wins were OT and SO wins, where we barely scraped by. This season we’re dominating teams, or at least in control. The PP is as good as I’ve ever seen it, the PK is just about as good as last year (I was very skeptical at the beginning of the season, but have been convinced its a good PK) and the offensive pressure is something new too. Last year’s 11-2-1 start or whatever is was was a fluke. This 5-1 start isn’t.

Lundquist

My concern is that Henrik is getting run over…it happened 3 times last night and in prior games, too. If this continues he will get injured eventually. If we lose our best player for a longer stretch we could relaly be in trouble.

Disturbing Trend

I thought, and this is from reading some of the posts of people defending the Rangers MGMT in signing Brashear, that no one would take runs at our players once he joined the squad. But last night three different Leafs took blatant cheap shots at Hank. At least two of them were in the third period. What did our tough guy do? Zip. We need an element of toughness on the blueline so that people will be fearful of charging the net. A power-play with 6 mins left is meaningless. J.Blake should have been decapitated for running into Hank. Other teams must know the consequence of running into Hank. I hope Torts uses today to make that point to the squad. It can’t just be Brashear’s intimidation factor because, let’s face it, at 37 y/o he’s not that intimidating anymore.

On a positive note, the PP looks great and the offense is clicking nicely. Avery and AA seem to have some nice chemistry. Would love to see Cally as the RW on that line.

What irk me the most was...

These were generally blatant runs at the goaltender and only ONE was penalized.

I mean, come on refs, I know you’re trying to make this game competitive but you have to protect people’s health out there. Blake didn’t even TRY to stop and no one touched him.

by Lunkwill Fook on Oct 13, 2009 10:36 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t understand why we didn’t retaliate over that hit. I know Torts doesn’t want guys in the box, but with the lead last night it was time to make a statement.

Henrik is class act… His post game comments made it clear he was upset about it, without knocking the officials.

by CTrangerfan on Oct 13, 2009 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions

I think Brashear is still pretty intimidating, problem is he is rarely on the ice. Like you said it would be nice to have someone on D who could clear the crease, someone like Komisarek hehe

by MattPwrcf1 on Oct 13, 2009 10:38 AM EDT reply actions

Lets bring Dale Purinton back!!!!!

He could clear the crease and eye gouge pretty well, too :)

by MattPwrcf1 on Oct 13, 2009 10:41 AM EDT up reply actions

Komi didnt seem to be doing too good a job of clearing the crease last night, did he?

by Michael Gleich on Oct 13, 2009 11:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Can’t blame the whole thing on one player. He is known as a physical D man and from what I ve seen he does a good job. Who cares though, he aint on the Rangers.

by MattPwrcf1 on Oct 13, 2009 11:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Brashear's Ice Time

Is limited during a close game because he’s not much of an offensive threat. And Torts prefers to roll three lines. Wait, if he could I’ll bet Torts would only roll 2 lines. But that’s besides the point. Brashear played a lot time in the Third last night. He was out there every other shift and they were still taking liberties with our #1 asset. Don’t get me wrong, he’ll drop the gloves and muck it up, but I don’t really see the intimidation factor that people were using to justify signing the guy who took a cheap run at Betts in the playoffs last year. I know he’s here and I need to love him . . . the team as a unit needs to jump the next yutz who takes a run at our goalie. We are definitely lacking toughness and Voros is not the answer.

brash got some PP time last night lmao..

next time someone takes a run at hank we need to have a player go after them, even if it causes a suspension

LET'S GO RANGERS!!!

by Moshe52792 on Oct 13, 2009 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah torts mustve felt bad for the leafs bc we were totally running our 4th line out there on our last penalty. that was pretty funny

by Conway on Oct 13, 2009 8:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Really awesome

To see the Rangers owning the 3rd period. Very encouraging sign for the rest of the year if they can keep it up

by metsman07 on Oct 13, 2009 10:41 AM EDT reply actions

Do you guys think Brashear getting PP time at the end of the game had more to do with the fact that it was a blowout, or that Hank got nailed for the third time in a row and he was out there to send a message, but we ended up scoring so he couldn’t send it?

I say a little of both.

by DJ Wuss on Oct 13, 2009 2:14 PM EDT reply actions

Ummm

His PP shift ended before the Avery goal, no? He skated in circles and did not send any message other than, “its hard playing this much hockey in one period.” He looked out of shape and certainly did not run Tuskala or jump one of their skilled players, to the extent they have any, to send the message. So I think he was out there to rest and protect our skilled players, fill up space, and that’s what he did.

colton orr wouldve had hanks back. ill just leave it at that

by Conway on Oct 13, 2009 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions

ive liked brash so far. but he def. should have taken a run at someone after they took a run at hank

LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
