Rangers Recap: Rangers 4 Kings 2

Well you can chalk this one up to "THE King." Henrik Lundqvist bailed out the Rangers tonight and you can bet that they know it. Don't be fooled, the Rangers got out-played tonight, but were able to pull through for the win. This was a big one, the Kings are a good hockey team.

Vinnie Prospal scored the first tqo quickly followed by a goal from Brian Boyle (finally) and another goal by Marian Gaborik. Prospal also added an assist, you think Tampa Bay is mad they bought him out or what. Gaborik's shot was incredible and his play is just fantastic. He is truly clutch, all of his six goals have come in the third period.

Big props to Michael Del Zotto for putting up two assists, giving him 2 goals and 5 assists in 7 games. He shoots the puck from the point, something we have sorely missed for too long. The power play looked great too, converting 2 for 4 opportunities. The penalty kill looked good too killing off 7 of 8 penalties. This is something that might need to be fixed though, too many penalties will catch up to us eventually.

Snap shot numbers: The win was Lundqvist 5th of the season. The Rangers have won 6 in a row. Boyle scored the first goal of his Ranger career against his former team, good for him.

Sorry this is so quick and short, Jim will put up the Rangers official release when we get it. Here are some links:

think vally might play sat @toronto?

by Michael Gleich on Oct 14, 2009 10:27 PM EDT reply actions

I think he should. Vally looked good in his first start, Henrik took a beating tonight in the net, the Rangers will want Henrik to be fresh for the next few games after Toronto, and it’s never too soon start rationing his starts. This hot start will all be in vein if he breaks down after the Olympics.

by XLII on Oct 14, 2009 10:50 PM EDT up reply actions

also being his hometown always nice to get vally a start there and since they are struggling maybe a good game to rest hank.

by Michael Gleich on Oct 15, 2009 1:12 AM EDT up reply actions

And Vally is a bigger guy, in case they decide to run the goalie again.

Found a Way

As much as Hank was the star tonight, the group found a way to win, which says a lot about them already.

Caught most of the game, but when the US Soccer game started heating up I was entranced in that. WHAT A GAME IT WAS. THE YANKS ARE COMIN’

what a finish to that game with a goal 30 sec left in 5 min of extra time to tie it and win the group. also very emotional watching them saluting and thinking about Charlie Davies and his horrible crash and Oneywu’s injury looked bad, only making the goal better since it was a man down.

eh id play lundqvist 4 out of every 5 games.

if he is beat up though than sitting him for vally is fine tooo

What happened to Gilroy? wasn’t he supposed to be a mike green type of player? only one goal? I wonder what’s going on

by spartan12 on Oct 14, 2009 11:56 PM EDT reply actions

I wouldn't be negative on Gilroy....

Think about it….he’s a rookie 7 games into his career, and has 1 goal and a +4 rating. He is learning the defensive end, and I’m sure that is something they are stressing right now. Look at his linemate, too. Redden is having a good year (as long as you ignore the salary side of things) and that is, in no small part, due to the fact that he works well with Gilroy and the new system.

Overall, I love the new team look and the energy.

by Openroadfun on Oct 15, 2009 2:11 PM EDT up reply actions

and you cant compare mdz and gilroy when it comes to points. mdz plays the powerplay waaaaay more than gilroy

no ur right, it just seemed that in the preseason he was dominating and skating with fierce. he was highly hyped and maybe he knows it. oh well lets see what happends

Lucky

New to this and wanted to share my observations.

Watching the game tonight, I couldn’t help but think the Rangers were a step slow. Might it be the 3 games in 4 nights? Either way, they were out skated and were lucky to get the win.

Watching Higgins stroll around when he is on the ice is getting old. I’d like to see him hustle a bit more. He’s out there gliding around for the most part .

Gaborik has a wicked shot by the way.

i do expect if he plays that brashear or avery or someone will get some retaliation (cleanly) or a fight with Mayers on Saturday for that run he took at Hank at MSG. like in baseball if there is no punishment to be fear for beaning your best hitter then he will keep getting hit. As good as Gaborik is and has been Hank needs to be protected much better and a message sent that hands off him.

by Michael Gleich on Oct 15, 2009 1:16 AM EDT reply actions

agreed

next time that happens someone ON THE ICE has to tackle the offender and pummel him until the ref pulls him off. whatever the penalty(double minor major or even game misconduct) it would be worth it to send a message to the rest of the league we will not stand for this shit. IMO orr wouldve had this problem settled allready, but thats just me

anyway nice to get a win when we didnt bring our A game, well, hank atleast did. OMG gaborik makes it look so easy. if u are a goalie how do u see that coming.

In henrik we trust

by Conway on Oct 15, 2009 1:42 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree

…for the most part…we def need to send a message to the rest of the league because Hank has been run at more in the first 7 games than probably all of last year. As for Orr having taken care of that if he was here I don’t know about that. That’s one thing that pissed Me off about him he would drop his gloves with the other teams enforcer in the first 5 minutes and that would be it for the game no matter what would happen. I’m not saying brashear has done anything about this yet but hopfully he’ll step up.

by klh2009 on Oct 15, 2009 2:02 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

this was my problem with the Orr/Brashear fight the other night. If you have that fight that early especially when we had all the momentum up 2-0, when that other stuff happens later they did nothing about it. We all knew they were going to fight and I have no problem with that but there still has to be a purpose to the fight in the team perspective and if he has it after the first run at the goalie, maybe we cut some of this stuff off.

by Michael Gleich on Oct 15, 2009 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Its Redic

The Caps ran him 2x
The Leafs ran him 3x
LA did it too.

When will someone step up and body slam the offender. Or use their stick to send the message. You need to protect your goalie physically and that fails with zero fear of retribution. There is simply zero deterrence right now and every team we play is trying to knock him off his game. Good strategy since he rocks, but we can’t rely on the league to sort this out. Time to step up and protect our #1 asset.

The only thing more annoying than seeing opponents get away with it is hearing Joe M. looking for reasons why its a legit hit. What a puffer.

Rangers averaging 4 goals a game

I think I can live with that. What did we average last year, like 2.3?

It’s gonna be a really tough decision with MDZ. I wanted to send him back at the beginning of the season, but he’s playing really well right now. Rough call.

sorry left that short. he has 7 points in 7 games, having great scuccess(as borat would say) as our PP qb and actually is very defensively sound. Lets the kid play!

by Conway on Oct 15, 2009 8:26 AM EDT up reply actions

realistically, if he wasnt playing well we would have to keep him because we have no one else. if sanguinetti or potter or anyone were better, they would be here now instead.

but since he has been so good its not a tough choice at all to me. i keep him no question

LET'S GO RANGERS!!!

by Moshe52792 on Oct 15, 2009 5:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Dunno why you wanted to send him back

But he’s not going anywhere. He and Kotalik are the fuel that makes the PP burn other teams. There’s just no chance they send him back after this start.

He’ll probably take his lumps mid-season, but that’s expected of a 19-yr old. And if he doesn’t, well then watch out.

MDZ is here to stay! Tough win last night… but a win none the less.

I think sitting Hank and having him well rested for the Sharks on Monday night is a good call. Then play him against the Devils. And let him rest against the Habs or Coyotes.

by CTrangerfan on Oct 15, 2009 10:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Last year this would have been a shootout

Probably still have won but it would have been a “kiss your sister” shootout win after the Rangers only muster 2 goals.

Thought Del Zotto looked very shaky in the first period. He got an assist but let’s see what happens in the next four games. He barely skated in the third period when the Rangers shut the offense down.

Total Swedish government bailout last night.

by db19 on Oct 15, 2009 8:21 AM EDT reply actions

last year we lose 2-1 because the pp wouldnt have netted the two goals and gaborik wasnt here for the last one would be my guess.

by Michael Gleich on Oct 15, 2009 11:39 AM EDT up reply actions

mdz is probably going to lead the league in points at this rate, he’s on the team for sure. hey guys do you remember preseason we werent talkin about mdz until the last game, is it me or is he growing fast?
