Rangers Analysis: "Camp Torturella" paying dividends for Rangers already
We talked in the off-season about the how grueling a training camp the Rangers were going to face under John Tortorella. Tortorella complained very early in his Ranger tenure that he felt the Rangers weren't in very good game shape, and that was something he would set out to improve.
We heard the classic line from John over at Raw Charge that "Vomit is a mainstay" at a Tortorella training camp , and some of us liked that phrase so much we're using it as our signature. Players were told in May by the coaching staff what to prepare for, and many of them have said they are in the best shape of their careers. Now it appears that the benefits of "Camp Torturella" are paying off in the early going of this season.
In all but one of the six victories of this current win streak, the Rangers have clearly been the better third period team, skating stronger and wearing down their opponents. In Monday night's 7-2 victory over Toronto at the Garden, the Leafs were clearly gassed and the Rangers toasted them for four goals in the third period to put the game away.
That has been the early trend for the Rangers. In six games played, they've outscored their opponents 13-3 (last year they were outscored 81-68 in the 3rd period), and outshooting them 59-56 (Note: the shot on goal numbers were much more skewed in the Rangers favor until the Kings had to go and outshoot them 10-1 in the third period last night). Although the numbers seemed to point to the Rangers being the better conditioned team, in this article from the Daily News, John Tortorella wasn't quite ready to admit that:
"I don't know if it's conditioning-related, but we had another good third period, so that's good news," Tortorella said after Monday night's win.
However, if Tortorella wasn't ready to admit it, the players were:
"I think it comes down to conditioning," said Dan Girardi.
"It goes back to camp," added Chris Drury. "You just can't go through what we went through and not be a tighter team, but also in good shape. ... It's pretty nice mentally just to have that in the back of your head."
One thing that has been a growing concern is that while the Rangers have been terrific in the third period, they've taken some 2nd periods off. That may work against teams like the hapless Leafs, but teams like the Penguins, Capitals, and Flyers are likely to make them pay for it.
The Rangers conditioning could go a long way at the end of the season in determining just how long their summer vacation is.
When Mike Keenan was coach of the Rangers, he insisted the Rangers be the best conditioned team in the league, even putting them on the exercise bikes after games to help keep them in better shape. They needed that conditioning right down to the very end of Game 7 of the Finals. Maybe someday this current team will need it too.

Great Piece
I think it was interesting on Banter Radio when Andrew Gross relayed how Vinny Prospal described the camp. Vinny’s take was the “fear” of camp got them in shape more than the camp itself. It was having all summer to fret about what was in store for them was what motivated them to show up already in great shape. This of course is all intended. I think Trotorella is underated in this respect. He really knows how to push peoples buttons and motivate. The more I learn about him the more fascinated I am. The regular press never gets behind the bottle throwing and occasional flare ups with reporters. There’s more to this guy than meets the eye.
Style of Play
The style of play suits them well so far. Teams are trying to figure systems out and the Rangers are just going balls to the wall crashing the net. Our group is getting used to each other too, so it will be interesting to see how long this continues.
Looking for a nice bounce back against Toronto on Saturday night after a “down” performance last night (which wasn’t really down that much).

well, I think conditioning only goes so far, I am pretty certain the Rangers were exhausted last night. 3 games in 4 nights is tough on anyone. No small feat to sweep those games.

Conditioning is such an underrated part of the game, especially considering the speed of the NHL post-lockout. Being able to reach down deep and find that little extra boost helps you win games. It will definitely help against teams in our division (I think the toughest in the league). Sometimes, even just having your guys tear it up down low against opposing teams can just wear down the other side and open up a lot of chances. I think that there’s really no way to get into this kind of shape during the season because you’re spending you time recovering from games. I just hope that they keep this up.
Great point DC
Conditioning is very underrated.
One of the many things that made Brian Leetch such a fantastic D-man was his ability to skate and skate and skate without tiring. I can still remember seeing him get stranded on the ice for a full two minutes of PK … once the shift was over the cameras would pan over to Leetch and he wouldn’t even be breathing hard.
Amazing
Nice post, Jim
As someone who wishes the Rangers nothing but the worst and will entertain any argument — no matter how dubious — predicting their demise, I can’t escape the Tortorella x-factor.
Just a great hire that will pay dividends in a lot of ways (including making Larry Brooks squirm, but that’s another matter). The Leafs are a mess right now, but would the Renney Rangers have finished them off so convincingly the way this team did? I think not. Great hire … dammit.

Hey Lighthouse
According to Stan Fishler, Charles Wang is about to abandon the Lighthouse Project and is seeking a new home for the Isles. He further reports that Flushing is a likely landing spot, purportedly pre-approved by Mayor Bloomberg. Maybe we can call them the Queens instead of the Fishsticks. ;) [at least Queens is technically still the same land mass as L.I.]

I’ll believe it when I see it (both the Queens rumbling and the allegation that I’m a good guy).
Fischler isn’t really the go-to guy on the subject, but regardless it’s all politics and PR until some actual decisions are made.

how legit.....
Is this flushing move for the islanders… Is this a joke?

Wang denies the reports. But there are numerous questions surrounding the ordeal. Questions like, “why did it take a day to reply?” and “who is the unnamed source?” and “why the LI Press?”
I don’t know alot, because no one really does. I just hope the Lighthouse project goes through. I’d be disappointed if it didn’t.

torts has been a beathe of fresh air and a pleasure. its nice to see players have accountability for their actions. when someone does something questionable on the ice(for example, staals plethera of penalties last game) u give the guy a quick verbal thrashing(come on staal WTF!) and then kinda smirk bc u realize he is gonna hear that one from Torts. and fyi i love staal thats just an example
