Post game quotes after the jump......
John Tortorella on tonight's game...
"We have some things to work on. Again, the first two periods, we weren't as bad as what the score was at that point. I don't think we were terrible. They score some goals and we don't. Started off fine...put ourselves in penalty problems. To me, watching the game, it wasn't as bad as the score was at that particular time, but we have some things to work on."
Chris Drury on tonight's game...
"We did get off to a good start. We were 2-0, we got some penalties that got us in trouble. The good thing is, no matter, in this league, how bad you lose, it is just one game. It is two points. We have a few days to rebound. We have a big divisional rivalry game on Thursday (vs. New Jersey)."
Vinny Prospal on taking penalties...
"We have been talking about this for some time...about the penalties. If you look at their personnel, this is a team that has a lot of skilled players that capitalize on the power plays and that is what happened tonight. It is something we have to learn from, especially from the penalties."
Brandon Dubinsky on tonight's game...
"It is a game of momentum. We came out, and I thought we had a good start. We had the momentum early. We took a couple of penalties, that killed the momentum and they scored. We just weren't able to get it back. I think that is something we need to learn how to do, is get the momentum back. We just have to learn from this one and make sure we are ready to go for Thursday."

the 4th line
This game exemplified something I’ve been curious about since the start of the season. After all the preseason talk of “Tortorella never plays his 4th line”, why has the 4th line seen significant time this year – not necessarily big amounts of minutes, but definitely shifts during key times. -3 for Boyle and Brash during this game, and it’s not the first time they (along with Voros when active) have seen ice time during key situations and against the other team’s top 3 lines. What is Torts thinking? The choice to play them regularly hadn’t bitten us prior to this game, but SJ really destroyed those guys tonight.
Anyone else hoping Torts goes back to his old ways and keeps these guys off the ice?

Dubi hit it on the head
Or we could just stop taking so many penalties

The refs called some terrible penalties on the Rangers.
I agree that the Rangers have to stop taking penalties, but please some of those calls in the 2nd period were down right disgusting. How is it that Sean Avery got cross checked from behind and that lead to the tripping call on him. Can’t two players fight for the puck, yet it’s the Rangers who get called for holding.
The goal that made it 3-2 Sharks, WHERE WAS THE OFF-SIDES! THE SHARKS WERE OFF-SIDES AND THE LINESMEN ALLOWED THEM TO SCORE!
You had at least a trip, roughing, hit from behind and a cross check on the Sharks yet, the refs kept their whistles in their pocket till 1:18 left in the 2nd period. It’s already too late at 5-2. The Rangers can lose a game all by themselves without the help of the Refs.
Also Valequette did a decent job, it’s not his fault that the rest of the team failed him this game. But I will agree that the Rangers got destroyed and the Sharks played them very well. Not to concerned and I’m ready for the Devils on Thursday.

Goalies
I have to say that I think Valiquette wasn’t very good last night. Some of those goals were ones that he should have stopped. The Setoguchi goal was acceptable. But the Staubitz goal and the Ortmeyer goals were because of poor positioning and puck control. Personally I don’t understand why Torts would put in Valiquette against a team heralded for their offense. It makes very little sense. In a game where your goaltender is going to have to make some big saves wouldn’t you want your #1 in net?

I don’t have a problem with him starting Vally last night, but he was awful. 4 goals on 13 shots, not good for business

not VERY important
I have no problem with Valiquette starting last night. Hank needs breaks every now and again, the game was non-conference, non-division and was essentially meaningless, aside from the obvious W/L. The bubble had to burst at some point, better against The Sharks than against a divisional opponent. It’s probably also better if Valiquette gets “shelled” rather than Hank.
I agree he did NOT look good in net. Being at the game I didn’t have the benefit of replay and wasn’t always watching the goaltending, but I thought he looked shaky from the get go. Frequently out of position and off balance. I suppose good teams can do that to a non-top tier goaltender.
Alright we got another loss, now let’s shrink our swollen heads and get back to business. I’ll be very happy if this team shows resiliency and bounces back against the Devils.

Somewhat Important
One loss is just one loss and if this lights a fire under the team then good. That being said, I think if Hank was in net it would have been a different game. Maybe we would have gotten a point out of it or two. I agree that its better that Valiquette gets lit up rather than Lundqvist. But still don’t like to see it. Hopefully Brodeur will get a taste of the same situation when we see the Devils on Thursday.

Don’t mistake what I said. I didn’t like it, especially being at the game. Obviously I’d prefer the win, but all winning streaks come to an end. It’s better it came to an end against a non-conference opponent than a conference opponent.

Jed Ortmeyer
Nice to see him score a goal and get some significant ice time for the Sharks. Big hit on Avery too. I miss him and wish him the best of luck with that team.
Valiquette didn’t play his best game (obviously), but he didn’t have much help in front of him. I have a feeling that teams with good speed are going to have an easy time getting odd man rushes and getting to loose pucks off of rebounds if the defense is constantly pushing up the ice, like we saw last night and have seen at times this season (Pit, Was).

valiquette not being a starting goalie..
ny friend said before the season that he was alot like an anderson for colorado and would get his chance.. diffeence between valiquette being a backup and sarter is very obvouis.. consistency.. he could get a shutout or 1 goal game one night and give up 5 or 7 or even 10(dallas last yea and dallas sucked last year).. or when he was pitching a shutout last year against toronto(another terrible team) and gave u 5 goals in 3 minutes with only 5 minutes left.. lundqvist might not always get a shutout or 1 goal game but rarely will he go over 3 goals..2 or 3 goals is almost a lock and sometimes 1 or 0.. that is the difference

Boy oh boy is Valiquette horrendous.

i wouldnt say he is horrendous but laid an egg this game, hell yeah. hank would have atleast kept us in this game. it also showed that we cant be taking all of these stupid penalties bc the top tier teams will take advantage early and often. im all for givin hank a rest once in awhile, but i dont get why they didnt rest him against toronto, an inferior team who have been taking runs at hank
