Ranger Updates: Semenov will not be a Ranger, Callahan only "A" given

Apparently he isn't, this just off the tweets:

@stevezipay:

Live from Pittsburgh: Alexei Semenov contract status unclear; he's in stands watching Pens skate with GM Glen Sather

Semenov deal uncertain: "I'd love to be here, but don't know if it's going to work out," he told Newsday. Russia is a possibility.

No other defenseman that have been waived look attractive to the Rangers, most likely due to salary cap constraints, could open the door for someone in Hartford, or more likely the Rangers just roll with 6 D-men if this can't be worked out.

UPDATE: 11:33 AM

This is from Andrew Gross, looks like Semenov will NOT be a Ranger:

Alexei Semenov will not be a member of the Rangers this season. Team will still look for a 7th D-man.

UPDATE: 11:36 am

From Andrew Gross:

Ryan Callahan is lone alternate captain for Rangers for now.

UPDATE by Joe Fortunato: 11:42 AM

Talk about being whipped. This from the tweets of Steve Zipay (@stevezipay):

stevezipay Semenov gone; Sather said players and agent agreed but Semenov's wife nixed deal. hunt on for 7th D

UPDATE by Joe Fortunato: 11:48 AM

Andrew Gross just put up on his twitter (@agrossrecord) the D-lines. Warning you are not going to like it:

AGrossRecord #RangersD-pairs: Staal-Girardi Del Zotto-Rozsival Redden-Gilroy

He also put up the Rangers lines for the night (these are a little better to see):

#Rangerslines: Prospal-Dubinsky-Gaborik Higgins-Drury-Callahan Lisin-Anisimov-Kotalik Brashear-Boyle-Voros

UPDATE by Joe Fortunato: 12:25 PM

Well we can cross Schubert off the list as a possible Semenov replacement, as per the tweets of Ben Thrashers.

@BenThrashers: Thrashers have claimed Christoph Schubert off waivers from the Senators.

We'll keep this thread up until the pregame stuff goes up, and we'll update this with any info that comes in throughout the day.

This doesn’t bother me if he doesn’t sign. what I really want to know, who will be the alternates.

by spartan12 on Oct 2, 2009 11:29 AM EDT reply actions

I think he was a good fit. Maybe it will work out. I can’t imagin what the problem is?

We don’t need the distraction. The banner raising tonight is bad enough. On the other side a win tonight is an awesome start. We don’t have a good history playing in Pitt.

by CTrangerfan on Oct 2, 2009 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions

So much for it working out....

WE could use a 7th D-man… Won’t have many good options in our price range.

by CTrangerfan on Oct 2, 2009 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Actually this might be a pretty big problem

No 7th defenseman is never a good move for a hockey team. I liked Semenov i liked what he brought to the table I just don’t understand whats going on.

“GM Glen Sather said Semenov “couldn’t talk his family into it,” regarding playing for the Rangers."

seriously, like they didnt know that was a possibility when he was here for the last month?

Semenov should have told his family “It’s ok, they won’t pair me with Malik, he’s gone!”

i think...

this is actually quite a drag.
I liked the idea of having a BIG solid guy to come off the bench for the blueline.
We need something in terms of a solid vet. While Potter and Sauer may be serviceable, we have two rookies on D this year.

I’ve been really optimistic about this year, but these things:
- 2 rookies on D
- 2 over 30 vets playing the worst hockey of their careers on D
- the inconsistent pre-season of the formerly consistent Girardi
Are very bad signs. In fact, they’re really the signs of a re-building team.

After watching the Caps last night pound on Boston, I’ve become a bit more worried about our D… What worries me is that maybe I’m just being more realistic.

lines for tonight same as last couple days
Prospal – Dubi – Gabby
Higgins – Dru – Cally
Lisin – AA – Kotalik
Brashear – Boyle – Voros

i just threw up in my mouth reading the D-pairs

Staal – Girardi
MDZ – Rozi
Redden – Gilroy

by mleetch352 on Oct 2, 2009 11:47 AM EDT up reply actions

so did I

Blueshirt Banter: Covering the New York Rangers the only NHL team with three home arenas.

MDZ is going to his work cut out.

by CTrangerfan on Oct 2, 2009 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions

well

if u think about it.

i liked gilroy with staal, but we really do need a shutdown pair to stand up all night against malkin and crosby.

thats why staal-girardi are together.

i think redden and gilroy will be fine together. i actually think redden will be decent this year. as for mdz and rozi, we can only feel bad for mdz.

i really wish we had a 7dman. its very important and he was cheap.

who gets the other a? i love cally getting one but who gets the other?

staal? gaborik? dubinsky? prospal? AVERY?!?!

LET'S GO RANGERS!!!

by Moshe52792 on Oct 2, 2009 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions

i cant see torts giving it to avery. dubi probably was eliminated from the discussion at least for this season because of the holdout as that would be rewarding it and torts doesnt want that impression. staal, gabby, vinny and higgins are the likeliest choices, but dont rule out redden.

by mleetch352 on Oct 2, 2009 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Gents

Let’s bring back Malik lol

"Malik now." "6 foot 6, 238, not a noted goal scorer but he's gonna give it a shot here." "Malik has not scored this year. In on Kolzig, faked it....SCORES"

by Calm Down on Oct 2, 2009 11:51 AM EDT reply actions

Semenov would have been a nice addition as a 7th defenseman. I’d expect Sather to make a move for somebody, maybe with Toronto to add some depth, especially if DZ doesn’t perform well over the next 9 games.

Callahan deserve an ‘A’ more than any other player on the club. The kids a natural leader and leads the best way anyone can, by his example.

by Ryan McFadden on Oct 2, 2009 11:55 AM EDT reply actions

Maybe Tampa Bay too

they have enough defenseman to field a full team

Blueshirt Banter: Covering the New York Rangers the only NHL team with three home arenas.

by Joe Fortunato on Oct 2, 2009 12:00 PM EDT up reply actions

they will need another d-man regardless of MDZ because the idea that they can now say to Sangs, oh we always thought you were ready come back and play is ridiculous.

I am happy Cally got it and surprised Gabby didnt sort of by default. I would like to see Staal get the other.

well I think they will only call up Sangs to be

a guy who plays night in and night out. it makes no sense to take him away from 20 minutes a night in the AHL and put him into the 7th man spot. (If thats what you meant leetchie them im sorry to repeat it)

Who’s the odd man out?

Given:
Prospal – Dubi – Gabby
Higgins – Dru – Cally
Lisin – AA – Kotalik
Brashear – Boyle – Voros

I have to admit, I kind of like these lines, but I know they have to make room for Sean at some point.

Voros or Boyle

one or the other. Not anyone else.

i move lisin to 4 and voros down.

more likely is AA to 4 and boyle down.

by mleetch352 on Oct 2, 2009 12:15 PM EDT up reply actions

but that depends on how well the 1st line works with prospal on the wing works or if torts moves him back to the pivot.

by mleetch352 on Oct 2, 2009 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah but I think Tortorella might like the whole

Prospal-Dubinsky-Gaborik thing, and if he does then AA will remain on the third line and we will all be happy.

All of the lines look better as currently constituted, if you ask me. Avery kind of throws things out of whack a bit. Mostly because Lisin isn’t a 4th line player.

Camp Tortorella - Where Vomit is a Mainstay

by George E. Ays on Oct 2, 2009 12:24 PM EDT up reply actions

i dont disagree but cant put avery and brash out there together or we will need a bigger penalty box.

by mleetch352 on Oct 2, 2009 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I’d actually be worried they both got instigator penalties for fighting each other and we constantly end up 5 on 3.

Camp Tortorella - Where Vomit is a Mainstay

by George E. Ays on Oct 2, 2009 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Rangers in recent history play better when avery is in the lineup. He can alway stakes Brashears spot.

by CTrangerfan on Oct 2, 2009 1:20 PM EDT up reply actions

In recent history, Avery injected alot of speed and energy into a team that had neither most days. This is a different looking team.

It’s not that I want him to go anywhere, he’s quite the bargain thanks the Stars fuck up. Just saying that he might create some havoc in the lineup while they figure out where he best fits, whereas the lines as constituted without him look like everyone has a place where they belong.

Camp Tortorella - Where Vomit is a Mainstay

by George E. Ays on Oct 2, 2009 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions

hmm

id put him in lisins spot for now. put lisin on the 4th. and send voros/boyle down. whichever one doesnt perform because both can play center/wing.

we need avery in the lineup. where a much better team

I’m going to miss both games this weekend! Going to visit colleges Sat and Sun. I’ll settle for taping them.

I didn’t care Semenov was a Ranger, now I don’t care he isn’t. It’s not as if he was needed and he was the only option. He did play well at times, but at others he looked like he was watching the game rather then playing it. Best of luck to him wherever he ends up.

Glad Callahan is an alternate. You have to think Gaborik is the front runner for the other “A”, but I wouldn’t mind seeing another deserving player like Dubinsky, Staal or Prospal.
