Rangers News: Mathieu Dandenault signed to a tryout deal with the Hartford Wolfpack

This from Steve Zipay who reported it over at Blue Notes before. Here are the highlights:

Word is that the 33-year-old swingman has a tryout deal with Hartford. Dandenault played 13 years with the Red Wings and Canadiens (4-8-12 in 41 games in Montreal last year). He's 6-1, 210 and didn't make the Sharks on a training camp tryout.

If he plays well enough there, he could be an inexpensive option in New York down the road.

Well there you all go. Obviously the search for a 7th defenseman exists and is ongoing. I would not mind seeing Dandenault as a seventh D man. You all have been begging for one for a few days now, and you may soon have your wish. Thoughts on this?

good enough

as a 7th d man…
in the end it all comes down to money and readiness.

if one of the prospects is showing signs of being able to handle nhl minutes and fits under the cap, i would rather throw them into the ring, and gain nhl experience.

But Dandenault wont be any worse than rozy or redden defensively

Redden has been good all year

I think we should start accepting his contract and just requesting him play well.

i have a request

if i have to watch them play, obviously i want to see them play well.

i just think both him and rozy are just shells of their former selves.

i dont need norris trophy play out of them. i just want smart simple hockey out of them. they were basically taken off the pp and replaced by a foward and a 19 year old kid.

what does that say about them? it says they cant get it done and are relinquished to 2nd pp unit at times. and at times they get the best seat in the house to watch the PP go to work.

i try to look at the big picture. them playing ok now is good. 7-2 is great… now. but down the road if an injury occurs on this team and we need to make a trade, can we pull it off with the little amount of cap space we currently have? these questions will be answered in time. I just with they werent paid so much so we could have the Luxury of adding someone and not being hand cuffed by the cap.

didn’t Dandenault used to play forward for a little bit?

It will be interesting to see:
1 – if Dandenault shows that he has the conditioning needed to survive the Torts system
and if he does,
2 – can the Rangers can sign him for less than 1.2mm – which is all they have in cap space.

They don’t have a whole lot of cap flexibility.

i disagree

yeah obviously he isnt playing like nick lidstrom but he doesnt wow me during games.

too many times every game do i watch him and roszival play awful defense.
too many times i see them get beat at the offensive blue line, creating oddman rushes.
not enough times do i see their name in the score sheet.

sadly i agree it could be much worse… we could have dale purinton and eric cairins as a dmen or andy sutton and whoever else sucks on that isles defense besides steit and martinek.

the rangers are up against the cap ceiling, and with redden and rozy just playing ok works for now. Imagine if they blew more than they did? and played liek marek malik twins?! then the rangers would be making a huge salary dump where we dish one of them away with a 1st round pick for something moderate in return.
theyre(the rangers) are 7-2 right now, and winning cures most all ills.

Low risk

He’ll play in Hartford and the braintrust (no laughing) can take a close look. If they think he can play – he’ll sign for Semenov money. Dandenault also knows how much cap space the Rangers have and wouldn’t be here if he wasn’t willing to take what they can give. If he can’t play – he’s gone. The only loss will be a few less shifts for Potter and co.

He’s been around the block and may fit nicely.

My only question would be: Did they clear the deal with his wife?

lol

"Malik now." "6 foot 6, 238, not a noted goal scorer but he's gonna give it a shot here." "Malik has not scored this year. In on Kolzig, faked it....SCORES"

I think the rangers will dump Rozy at some point this season.

7th defensman

never mind a 7th d, we need a big tough d who will hit and clear the crease.sum 1 who will make whoever runs lundquist pay and not just by huggin the guy like we have now. sum 1 who will throw punches

7th D-man

I dont think a 7th D-man is the problem. we need to add a hard hitter back there and bump someone else to 7th D-man- ….the sharks owned the front of the rangers net, one could say the leafs and kings did as well, although we won. I doubt Rosy or Redden become bench players with their salaries, so mathematically its probably Gilroy :-(

Redden has been solid , my only complaint is his salary, his play has been very good. Hopefully not having th PP QB pressure on him will benefit later in the season. Rozy on the other hand has made quite a few glaring mistakes so far, and has been bailed out by Lundquist fairly often. He looks a step slower than last year, where he was already slow.

unfortunately, I am not sure what our options would be. I dont think Dandenault is the answer, i’d rather see sanguinetti or one of the kids in that spot.
