Rangers Analysis: How will the Rangers respond?
When the Rangers lost two days ago against the San Jose Sharks the Rangers lost a lot more than just two points. In fact there five streaks broken last night when the final buzzer went off. Here they are: You know what? Good! That's right, good. During the game when the Rangers were down 5-2 I was in the live chat reading you guys hoping that "Gaborik scored to keep his streak alive" or that "Prospal assists on Gaborik's goal so that they can keep their streaks alive." It's not your fault, I was thinking the same thing. And I'm willing to bet my bottom dollar that the Rangers were too. Those distractions cannot be there if the Rangers truly expect to make a splash in the NHL this year. They have to focus on just playing hockey and not worrying about winning every night, because at the end of the day even the best hockey teams drop 20 or so during a season. Tomorrow nights game against the New Jersey Devils is going to be a big one. If you want to look at measuring sticks through the season mark this game down as one of them. Can the Rangers rebound from a bad loss to the Sharks or will they drop one against their Hudson River rivals? How will the youth respond after the teams worst game of the season? So what do you guys think? Let us know in the comments!
In my opinion the Rangers were a hot team that got overconfident. Call this game a wake-up call, at least it better have been. You can't keep taking an exorbitant amount of penalties and expect to win games. The Rangers have taken at least 6 penalties in all of the past 5 games. In the first four the penalties didn't come back to bite them, last night against the Sharks it did.
Another problem that the Rangers are now facing is John Tortorella. It is pretty apparent that Torts does not like using his backup--and after a game like last night who can blame him. It would not surprise me at all to see Tortorella give Henrik Lundqvist the nod over Steve Valiquette a lot over the course of the season--especially if Valiquette continues to play the way he did against the Sharks--which would be a problem. We here at the Banter, and many of you as well, have all been in agreement that Lundqvist needs to be rested more this season--so that the extra burden of being the goalie for the Swedish Olympic team won't wear him out like it did in 2005-2006.

I think alot of things went into the loss on Monday. We can all question why Torts played Hank on Saturday in Toronto and sat him against one of the top teams when there was a three day layoff afterwards, but I think he wanted to use Valley that night to see exactly where he stood against the top teams in the league. I think its safe to say that he won’t be seeing much time in net unless the Isles, Leafs, or Wild are in town.
As far as responding, I don’t think that will ever be a problem with a John Tortorella-coached team. He’ll have them ready, and you can bet your @ss that they’ll play hard for 60 minutes. I think the 4th line will see a reduction in ice time, but don’t be surprised if Boyle and Brash getssome shared time on the third line. Avery will be at his top form tonight, so I guess that means a few bad penalties and some “missed” calls by the refs.
I think this is the kind of game where you will see Chris Drury really step up and become a leader (finally). He doesn’t have Gomez looking over his shoulder anymore, and he’s been on kind of a hot streak as far as his work is concerned. Cally will be grinding it out as usual. The second line is going to play a big role tomorrow night.
I think its safe to say that we’re going to give up some odd man rushes, because of the inexperience and the style of play, but this is where Hank needs to shine. And if we can keep getting production out of our back line, I don’t see any problem with giving up a 2 on 1 evey now and then.
One thing I noticed Monday night was that we seemed a step too slow on a lot of plays, or scoring opportunities were blown because a pass went to the skates instead of the stick. If I noticed that, then I’m positive Torts did too, and he’ll have it remedied.
The home crowd will make a difference too, and we all know Hank’s record against the Devils. I’m not too worried about this one.

I’m sure the Rangers will play better tonight. The Devils will be comming to play so it will be interesting. I think the Rangers will beat them easily though.
Mondays game points out a some problems… but we have depth and the ability to score.
Hank is a top goalie so we can keep us in any game.
Chad Johnson in Hartford better get focused. If Hank gets hurt we may need him!

Vally.
I agree with the previous poster. Let’s give chad some games in the big league to see how he rsponds. Vally has spent the last three years on the bench and I doubt he would be insulted to be sent down for a couple. The kid looked great in preseaon and before the games become more and moe important, it mioght noe be a bad idea to give the kid a look. Just in case of course…

starting vally
anyone know why tort didn’t play Vally sat night vs an awful leafs team, while saving henrik for the much better sharks. that would have seemed more logical

Presumably
It’s because Henrik is going to get a bunch of work in the next week (5 games in 9 days) and he didn’t want to extend that, so it gives Henrik a full 4 days rest between Saturday and tomorrow.
I’d expect to see Henrik to get NJ and Montreal, Vally for Phoenix, then Henrik again for NYI and MInnesota.

starting vally
i don’t like that, turns out henrik had to come in anyway, so now vally’s confidence is shot, and henrik didnt get the rest.

Sure in hindsight
It looks bad, b/c Vally was off and Tortorella didn’t leave him out to dry, like Renney did to him against Dallas last year.
But one week ago Tortorella basically made the same decision, starting Vally against a much stronger Anaheim team and then letting Henrik do the job against Toronto. And nobody 2nd guessed it, since of course, Vally shut out Anaheim and Henrik dominated Toronto.
You guys gotta take it easy. It’s the 9th game of the season. I don’t think getting to 81-1-0 was a factor in the decision making.
If you start seeing Vally against the Pens and Caps, then we can start to question things. For now, a goaltending decision in October should barely be a blip on the radar.

Henriks record vs. Broduer is amazing so i say he piles on the wins vs the best goalie in nhl history.

they should have played henrik against the sharks devils and montreal.
than vally against pheonix.
than hank again.
i think well rebound and have a good game. were a better team than the devils so if we can jsut stick to our game will be fine

I agree the loss to SJ was a good thing
In the way we got spanked. If it was a 3-2 or 4-2 loss it wouldnt of been that dramatic. 7-2 is dramatic and the Rangers were forced back down to earth. And it was good it came against a western conf team instead of an eastern team or worse a divisional team. Didnt give up any points in the standings. And I agree totally w/ Joe F. It’s waaaaayyyy too early to give up on Vally. The guy was posting shutouts just last week. Relax guys he’s a good backup.

I agree too
it’s just the start of the season,so this game really didnt mean much.Givin vally the start shows him theres confidence from the club, which he’ll need being the backup. And of course the wake up call can jumpstart another winning streak,I’ll put big money we kick the shit outta fatso and whiners tomorrow, and nothing makes me happier then watching langensissy cry and complain all night.I’m predicting a 3-1,4-1 whooping, with at least one devil breaking his stick in frustration.

Compared to last year...
A little nervous about even mentioning this, but… didn’t last years hot start end in a very similar fashion to Monday night?
If I remember correctly, Valiquette was in net, we took a few bad penalties and got outskated most of the game. I don’t recall specifics but I believe it was a bit of a lop sided loss which they did not rebound from. I would ask someone to post stats, but I don’t think I want to get hung up on that game.
Obviously this year is completely different. There appears to be more leadership, a much more intense coach and a much more talented team. They are also facing the Devils which tends to increase the intensity level anyway. I’m not overly concerned, but will watch with anxiety and hold my breath for that first go-ahead goal. I predict 4-2 Rangers win.

win some, lose some
I believe the rangers will be fine against the devils. I’m more excited about the kids stepping up and scoring( gilroy and del zotto) .you need to lose to good teams in order to become better, and i’m quite sure torts has them fired up! GO RANGERS!!!!!!
