Brodeur leads Devils past Rangers 4-2
A seven game winning streak has all of a sudden become a two game losing streak as the Rangers fell to the Devils tonight 3-2 at Madison Square Garden thanks to a couple of deflection goals for the Devils, and a strong performance by Martin Brodeur.
While the Rangers were finally able to overcome their middle period issues, playing by far their strongest second period of the season, it was that pesky first period that did them in tonight, as the Devils jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals from Zach Parise and Nicholas Bergfors.
The Rangers tied the game in the second when Ales Kotalik picked up his 4th goal of the season. The Blueshirts got on the board early in the period with a goal from Marian Gaborik. Gaborik's goal was his 7th of the season, with Prospal and Kotalik assisting. Kotalik's two point night gives him ten on the season.
Brodeur, who picked up his first regulation win at Madison Square Garden since 2006, was sharp all night, making 29 saves. Henrik Lundqvist made 21 saves on 24 shots in the losing effort.
The Rangers did do a good job of staying out of the penalty box, only finding themselves shorthanded once in this game. The only other penalty was a fighting major to Sean Avery, who worked over Mike Mottau in the first period.
Two teams going in the opposite directions right now. The Rangers need to regroup for their game at Montreal Saturday night, and try and find a way to play sixty minutes of solid hockey.

For the first few games you saw signs that for once in a while there was a Ranger team willing to play 60 minutes.
Tonight just looked lazy to me…and that’s sad. Hopefully Tortorella doesn’t let that become a theme again.
"Malik now." "6 foot 6, 238, not a noted goal scorer but he's gonna give it a shot here." "Malik has not scored this year. In on Kolzig, faked it....SCORES"
I'm having flashbacks...
This is really starting to look a lot like last season.
The defense has really struggled with this new system lately. Last night Staal and Girardi looked horrendous, as did Rosival.
Honestly I didn’t think they played a bad game, a bad first period yes. But they stayed out of the box, and the Devils made some spectacular defensive plays. Some nights you just get beat, I think this was one of those nights.

Jim, I’m not sure if by “them” you meant the team or the 3 defensemen, but I felt as a team the first period was bad. As a team, the 2nd and 3rd periods were not bad and if not for a bad bounce things could be a lot different. As individuals, I thought Rosy, Staal and Girardi were terrible. Defensive zone turnovers were a problem, losing position on the opposing forwards was a problem, getting beat to the puck was a problem, etc. They just seemed to get beat all night long. The 3 improved as the game went along, but I don’t think it was a good effort at all.
On the flip side, I thought Gilroy, MDZ and even Redden were solid. I didn’t find myself screaming vulgarity followed by Redden’s name at all this game. Gilroy had to be bailed out on 1 occasion that I recall and MDZ got beat at the offensive blueline more than once, but I thought they played well overall.
I’ll continue to hope this team is battling the flu bug and not having a repeat of last year.
if girardi and staal dont make those uncharacteristic breakdowns in the first the game would have gone much differently, if u ask me the devils kind of looked like us last yr. finding a way to win with no real scorers besides parise.
