Rangers Analysis: Who has disappointed you so far?
Don't blink. Just about a week ago the New York Rangers were the hottest team in the league, winning 7 in a row against some very tough opponents. Currently the Rangers have dropped two in a row, both in pretty bad fashion.
Now I know you guys, hey I have been writing here for almost a year, and I know this dam is going to burst eventually so let me start it. Through these ten games we have seen some big surprises, no one is debating that. Michael Del Zotto (4 goals 5 assists 10 games), Ales Kotalik (4 goals 6 assists 10 games) and Vaclav Prospal (3 goals 9 assists 10 games) have all been shockers thus far. Marian Gaborik has come as advertised with 7 goals and 6 assists and Henrik Lundqvist has just been, well, Henrik Lundqvist.
Now winning streaks can be a really good thing but sometimes they mask some problems. And with the Rangers current two game losing streak I think we should note two of the big ones before you all rip their heads off. So click after the jump for my busts so far in this young season.
Christopher Higgins: I don't think I can tell you how excited I was when the Rangers nabbed him. He is young, he has come close to scoring 30 goals before; and after last years disappointing season he seemed poised to have a huge rebound. Well, 10 games into the season I can tell you that has not been the case. Aside from his first five games in which he played well, shot when he had the chance and worked hard on the boards he has been invisible. No goals and just two assists in 10 games is unacceptable, especially since in the beginning he was playing second line minutes and saw some power play time. He needs to start scoring, and he needs to do it soon. Higgins is among four Rangers to not score a goal yet--the other four are Donald Brashear, Aaron Voros and Michael Rozsival ... bad company to be in if you ask me.
Chris Drury: I feel like we have this conversation about Chris Drury all the time, so I swear I wont bring him up, then before you know it we're talking about him again. I can get over the 7.1 million dollar a year contract. Jim and I have been banging the "you can't do anything about the contracts so get over it" drum for a long time now. I know that Chris Drury is never going to score 37 goals again, but at that contract (and I hate saying that) you need to play better. At this point Drury is not even doing the little things right, and he has been invisible the past few games as well. Oh also the Rangers have lost every game he has scored in this year.
Onto the players that almost made the list.
Michael Rozsival: I rocked Rozsival for the entire beginning half of the season but he has bounced back and actually impressed me at times. He looks more comfortable within the system which is good.
Dan Girardi: Girardi also had a shaky start but he has bounced back to start playing solid hockey.
Wade Redden: He has been solid all year and if you can look pas his contract--which you should since the contract is not his fault--he has been good all year.
Donald Brashear: Slower than I imagined but aside from a game or two has been as advertised. A fourth liner who drops the gloves when he has to.
Aaron Voros: Haven't seen enough of him to call him a bust, but there have been a few games where he has been just awful.
Okay so there you have it, who are your busts and why? Let us know in the comments!

um..
im dissapointed with brashear. ik hes a fighter, but all those times someone ran henrik over he did nothing.
im a bit dissapointed with girardi, and after last night staal. their not rerrible, but they need to be better to be a 1st pair, especially girardi
im dissapointed with rozi of course, but hes getting better
im oviously dissapointed with higgins. its about time for him to put up some points.
thats about it.. everyone else is doing there job
LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
On Drury
Drury is tied for 3rd on the team in Pts per 60 minutes of ice time thus far @ ES (behind Gaborik and Avery). Since he’s not getting PP time w/ the new lineup, this is where he needs to be good. Now, he’s only on a 41 pt pace, which is not good, but when you look at it more closely, it’s actually very good for him:
2009 – 56 pts, 34 @ ES.
2008 – 58 pts, 27 @ ES
2007 – 69 pts, 39 @ ES
2006 – 67 pts, 28 @ ES.
So you can see that in recent history Drury has been most deadly on the PP, at least when it comes to his scoring. Since he’s not being used in that role, his production is bound to slip. I can’t blame Chris for that, if he gets 40 points playing only ES and SH, then it’s right in line with his career.
The contract is his biggest issue, which makes him the Redden of our forwards, he’s not playing bad persay, but he’s getting way too many dollars for his production.

sorry but
i dont care about the points. I care about everything else, and thus far hes been pretty invisibble

Well..
He leads the league in blocked shots among forwards.
He’s logging the 2nd most PK minutes on a top 5 PK unit.
I mean, subjective things like “I don’t hear his name called” are just that, subjective. Defense largely goes unnoticed. Can you elaborate on what you believe you’re not seeing out of him this year, compared to years past?

When was the last time you viewed Drury as a difference maker
Forget a difference maker, how about kinda dangerous. When he has the puck I don’t expect good things anymore. And screw killing penalties, he needs to do more than that.

Never?
Honestly, other than being incredibly clutch throughout his career, I’ve never felt Drury was a “difference maker,” assuming that by difference maker you mean someone like Gaborik, Jagr, etc…. Hell Gomez was/is more of a difference maker in that sense than Drury.
Now if you are just saying that he’s supposed to be clutch and he hasn’t been, well then I have no argument, he certainly has not been.
But I mean, this is what Drury is, he’s a 50-55 pt scorer who plays all special teams and allegedly provides leadership.
For whatever reason Tortorella took him off the PP (though I think Drury should be on the 2nd unit since that unit has produced diddly-poo and needs a jump start), so his value is even less than prior years.

That is what I meant
He needs to be someone who can score a big goal. He has done none of that during his tenure here.
I am fully for a 25 goal 25 assist season, I know thats what we signed up for. But I want more out of him away from the puck and lately he has been invisible.

Uno Momento por favor
His first year he had a couple of clutch goals. He seems to have lost a step or two and can’t carry the puck up the ice, which hurts his line . . . having a center who can’t lug the puck. But his shot still is there and he always finds a spot in front of the net. His defensive position is unrivaled. He’s really not that much wacker than last year, just a year older and slower. If you had him signed for 1 million, he’d even be a steal. I guess its hard to overlook the 7+ he counts against the cap.
On Higgins
He’s been the best forward on the PK thus far, at least in terms of goal prevention. He’s not as flashy as a Callahan or Dubinsky though, who do it with a lot of energy and are much more noticable. So at least he’s been valuable in that role.
His production otherwise though is horrendous. 2 pts in 10 games is not good. I’m glad he’s been dropped in the lineup, and if it continues I’d be fine with dropping him all the way down to Brashear-Boyle land.
By far, he’s been the Ranger whose Expectation : Production Ratio is the lowest.

higgins
i dont think hes been bad.
he has been playing an inportant role on the pk its just he isnt getting the glory at the other end. unfortunately they are counting on that.
A line of Avery-Drury-higgins should be able to score goals… but maybe its a lack of a playmaker on these secondary lines that handcuffs some players.
disappointments
this should be a fan post, but i couldnt stop typing.
in no particular order.
Voros/Brashear – i dont expect much out of these guys anyways. but they are 4th line guys anyways. brashear shows flashes(very brief) of decent puck handling skills, but not much happens from it. The big fourth line shows signs of great puck possession at times and draws a random penalty sometimes, but its been a while. Not really a disappointment, just a lack of offense hurts when the top lines arent producing.
Higgins – what do we have to say about him? Well, the obvious is he isnt scoring. That IS the problem. I dont think higgins is much of a playmaker from what ive seen in limited time with the rangers and at times w montreal, but he has the ability to score. I believe if higgins was scoring during the first 9 games, this team could be 9-0 or 8-1.
secondary scoring would definitely push this team to a higher level. Right now Gaborik has 7 goals. Without him the rangers would pretty much be like last years team with scoring problems. Someone else needs to step up and put the puck in the net more regularly and the rangers would become a VERY dangerous team.
more on the offense later.
On Defense, the team really hasnt played a full game as a unit flawlessly(the shut out was helped out by goaltending too).
On a nightly basis AT LEAST 1 defensemen makes multiple mistakes. i cant say that any ONE individual stands out to be awful, but all have seemed a step behind where they were defensively last year. hear me out.
Redden – i hate him. but hes playing okay. better than last year but i want more from him. he makes coverage mistakes at times and he is pretty bad with handling the puck along the boards in the offensive zone.
Ditto goes for Rozsival. But rozy looks slow this year… anyone else notice this?
Gilroy, he is still adjusting. He gets lost but i love the potential. his puck handling looks a little sloppy but i like how he thinks. he will get more comfortable as the season goes and i think we all will be happy.
Del Zotto… i dont even care what he does defensively, as long as he keeps the PP clicking im happy. but he is just as good as the other 5 defensively.
Staal -is it me? or does staal look like he has regressed a little? I like that Torts has him thinking more offensively, but he seems to be half a step behind and a little weaker on the body checks. maybe he is hurting?
i actually think girardi has been the worst overall this season. he has been uncharacteristicly sloppy. he was a solid avg dman for the rangers over the past couple seasons. He just got the job done. never was he a constant liability, but this season his play has slipped. While scoring 3 goals this season, i feel that is a result in the offensive system in place.
im happy with the goaltending. what else can we say. Valiquette and lundqvist are playing good. minus the SJ game.
I just get frustrated at how lundqvist always gets beat glove side… it always seems the goaltenders glove hands develop at a young age, but sadly i think thats hanks weakness. That and shots from the point, always seem to go in.
For the rest of the offense…
people that need to pick up their play
Drury – Seriously, pick it up.
Anisimov – i wanna see that big frame put to use, he shys away from contact too often while forechecking. He has the hands, but he needs the grit. When those come together he will push for more playing time. Right now he doesnt deserve it.
i think when higgins picks up his play, another player might drop production a bit. like a dubinsky kotalik or prospal. Those guys are racking up points in the early going but if they keep on truckin and higgins joins in with gabby… then this team is going to be gang banging goaltenders in and out of the net on a nightly basis.
Disappointments
Brashear/Voros. I thought Brashear would be an improvement over Betts for 4th line since he’s good for 4-5 goals a year and, more importantly, in addition to the fights, I thought he would deliver some huge bodychecks that would soften up some of the opponent’s top D so our skill guys would have an easier time. So far, those hits haven’t materialized — maybe he’s just too slow. Also, I expect him to be stronger on the puck in his own end — can fend off checks and not make the bad passes out of our end that he’s been making. Voros came out hard in the pre-season; playing much more physical than last year but its obvious that he doesn’t relish that role — he’s got enough speed but just not getting it done.
Maybe we should sign Chelios to bring a little toughness into the lineup. ;)
On others
Brashear and Rozsvial are playing exactly in line with what I thought they’d be, so I wouldn’t even call them disappointments. They’re shitty players who are playing shitty.
I have two which are going to take some flack for and that’s fine, but when I think disappointment, I’m thinking “who isn’t playing up to their expectations”
The first is Ryan Callahan.
He’s my favorite player, easily. I love his hustle, his grit, he’s going to be a fantastic player. But thus far? 5 pts in 10 games, with 4 of them on the PP, is not what I expected out of him. That’s a 41 pt pace, and is thus not where he needs to be for this team to excel. This was supposed to be a leap year, where he gets in the 55-60 points range. Maybe disappointment is too strong for him, but this is at very least unsettling.
The other is Matt Gilroy.
It’s hard to really kill him since he’s a rookie, but watching MDZ flourish has, to me, shined the light on Gilroy. He’s supposed to be an offensive defenseman, but 2 pts in 10 games doesn’t really seem offensive. Now his defense has been a surprise, he’s actually much more sure in his own end than I thought he would be, so that’s something to build on.
I think his offense will come, but thus far it’s been disappointing.
Neither of them classifies as a “bust” of course.
Camp Tortorella - Where Vomit is a Mainstay
Gilroy and MDZ are an interesting pair. They both played so well in preseason, but as the regular season moves along, Zots has maintained his level, but I think Gilroy has tailed off somewhat.
Gilroy’s speed absolutely amazes me though. I think he may be one of the fastest skaters I’ve ever seen on the blue line

girardi an staal...
everytime I see a goal scored by the other team.. i sceam come on roszval or gilroy or even redden at times (out of habit but he has been really good so far) but then I look and it is staal and girardi on the ice most of the time.. i know they get more minutes but its not good.. higgins well i do not know but maybe call parenteau or grachev up and sit him for 5 games to show him he needs to step up..but if someone told me before the year started we would be 7-3 in 10 games i would have taken it so lets take it as a whole because they have still been very good..
Dan Girardi and Marc Staal. Both inconsistent, with the former being terrible at times, and the latter prone to the epic turnover.
Have to agree...
Especially after last night. I think the defense has benefitted from big-time forechecking that hasn’t been so big-time the last 2 games. Suddenly we’re seeing a problem. Our shut-down duo isn’t so shutdown and last night looked completely lost.
Rosival is terrible, with flashes of being decent.
Higgins is a big disappointment, but it’s only 10 games.
Drury is doing exactly what we should expect. Very good PK, solid support roles, minimal point production.
Everyone else is pretty much as advertised.
Agreed on Staal, I think we all expected him to take a big step forward this year, and so far I don’t think we’ve seen it.

He just doesn’t look comfortable.
There is also the fact that maybe we have been spoiled by his defensive prowess because of the Tom Renney system. Maybe he isn’t as good (yet) as we think he is.

I gotta agree with RangerSmurf on Callahan. I’m not saying that he is playing badly, I think he’s working his ass off most of the time. But I think he should have been able to find the back of the net more often than he has so far.
I think that Girardi and Staal are still adjusting to the new system. I’ll give credit to both of them for trying to step up and create more chances. Staal needs to realize when to pass before he gets pick pocketed though. I’ve seen a couple of examples where he gave up the puck and left Girardi high and dry. For that reason I’ll say that Girardi is taking a beating because his defensive partner is making mistakes. The reverse holds true as well. But let’s just look at this as growing pains. It should get better.
I think Drury is playing well. No knocks here. By far the best penalty killer on the team. A slight edge over Cally and Staal. Scoring will come.
Higgins needs to find his game soon. I think once that first goal goes in he’ll gain a lot of his confidence back. But right now he is looknig snake-bitten.
Roszival is not looking as bad as he was during the start of the year. Obviously still dissappointing but what are you going to do about it. The biggest problem I have with him is his decisions to shoot the puck. 8 times out of 10 he’s trying to go through 3 or 4 defenders. And usually that creates an odd man rush the other way.
Overall, though, it could be far worse. 14 out of 20 points to start the season, and some of those despite some bad playing. Can’t complain. I just hope that everyone can start to find their place and produce like they should.
Rule #1. Cardio. Rule #2 Double Tap.
Callahan being one of my favorites, I’m going to be late to the party in getting on him. The kid flat out brings it every shift, whether they are up by 3 or down by 3. I am still confident the goals will come.

I’m not saying they won’t come. But he has to start finishing some of the plays that are getting set up for him. I love Cally too, but I’m trying to be fair and I don’t think its unreasonable to expect 25-35 goals outta him.

Staal has frustrated me.
Girardi, disappointed me.
I expected Rosival to suck, and he hasn’t disappointed.
Chris Higgins has dissapointed, I thought he’d capitalize more.
Actually Callahan like Higgins too. Cally has produced more, but he gets so manny opportunities…its just a bit frustrating.
And Chris Drury. I know he does a lot of unnoticed things…but its the fact that we got him to do that AND the noticable things too.
Tho, of course there are others like MDZ and Gilroy, Animisov, even Lisin, all pleasant surprises. I’d add Prospal to that, this guy is excellent and came at a bargain.
Kotalik has been well worth it too.
Gabby and Lundqvist are worth their weights in gold….Lundqvist as always meets his expectation, Gabby has even exceeded his. I didn’t think he was as good as he is.

Brashear
Sadly, Brashear has disappointed me. As much as I hated the signing, I did look forward to him taking charge out there and dishing out righteous retribution. So far, all I’ve seen is an inability to skate, play well with the puck, and play well defensively. I am literally scared whenever he’s out there.
This 2 game losing streak dissapoints me
Staal has disappointed me, but I think it’s mainly because he has been producing turnovers, not for his defensive play. He is by far the best defenseman we have. Torts is trying to turn him into Brian Leetch and I just don’t think he ever will be that type of player. When he’s trying to stick handle through a clogged neutral zone with no one behind him, something is very wrong. He got burned last night.
Girardi has made some serious blunders this year but I expected that. I’ve never thought he was very good and he is not a great skater. How many times have you seen him either get caught flat-footed or have people skate right around him? I was saying this off-season that he is way overrated. Being paired with Staal helped cover him a little. How many times has he taken a slap shot right into somebodies shin pads and have a breakaway the other way? I doubt he gets re-signed this off-season especially if he’s wanting over 1.5 mil.
Drury, well he’s about what I expected based on last season. I’m not paying his salary so I can only question why Torts has him on second line.
Rozsival was killing me for the first 6 games with his stupid and timid play. The guy is a disaster in his own end. I can’t even count the number of times he has skated alone behind the net for the puck and ended up turning it over. i haven’t noticed him the last couple of games so that is a good thing.
Higgins came her being advertised as a rugged winger with a 30 goal season to his credit. The guy skates OK. I don’t see any offensive flair there. No points in ten games? I guess I can call that a disappointment.
Brashear is old and beat up. He is slow, he doesn’t play physical enough. He’s already sat out two games. What exactly did he do to get sore? skate for 5 minutes every other day? At his age it’s a good thing Sather only signed him for one year. Oh wait, nevermind.
I hate being negative about the Rangers when so many good things are happening.
With Sanguinetti and Mcdonagh in the system, our blue line is looking really strong and deep for the next TEN years.
Gaborik has an awesome shot and he is a good skater. Instant offense, just add water. I liked Dubinsky on that line carrying the puck and making room for him. I don’t know if he got demoted or if Torts is trying to pick up Callahan and Higgins.
Dubinsky is stronger on the puck than last year and he is shooting more. I like everything about him. He has made some great passes to Gaborik. He takes people out, not a sissy check that doesn’t take the guy out of the play.
Anisimov needs to be a little more physical but he has skill and size. I can wait another ten games before I criticize him.
MDZ and Gilroy – I like them both. I like their defensive play as well as their skating. I was always taught that skating is 90% of the game and they are great skaters. MDZ has a lot more points right now, but they are all on the power play.
Callahan hasn’t been scoring but he is not a disappointment. I remember his game winner in Washington. He doesn’t take nights off.
and of course our goalie Hank. I’m disappointed that he ever gets scored on at all. He is great. He has already been the difference in a few wins. He could take us pretty far in the playoffs. When we get there, all these losses will just be good experience.
Callahan
OK maybe it wasn’t a game winner but big imomentum sing.
Is Drury's contract the worst in the NHL?

Equal Value
Given their relative salaries, Montreal must be howling at unloading “CHRISTOPHER” Higgins. This guy better wake up or he’s going to be riding the bus in Hartford. Brashear…Yikes…I’ve never seen Henirk take more shots. He’s been entirely invisible. Will he last the year or is it another Voros where he gets scratched many nights.
Will be interesting to see how they rehabilitate Vally after a nightmarish second period. Phoenix would be a good opportunity, but that assumes they can end the losing streak in Montreal, a tall order. Can’t really send him against the Islanders, although they do really suck (apparently).
Callahan
Cally needs to do alot more. The rangers offense needs a more then just one line to produce the goals. If callahan wants to be here next year he needs to do alot more. He’s making good money and not really showing his value right now.
Steve Lovergine
Drury
Get him on the point with the second power play unit (instead of Staal) and play him with Kotalik at even strength…then I think his points will increase.
