Defensive Lapses

I didn’t like what I saw in Montreal last night. While the Rangers demonstrated that they can score, they also demonstrated that they cannot stop the other team from scoring. The defense, in particular, is not playing well in the defensive zone. Montreal was really flying down the ice and controlling the puck in the third period and overtime. Rangers had difficulty in clearing the puck and creating offensive opportunities. They simply dumped the puck or iced it whenever they could get to it. Lundqvist is looking vulnerable and giving up too many goals because the defense is giving the other team too many easy opportunities to score. Unless the Rangers learn to stop taking stupid penalties, stop turning the puck over in the neutral and defensive zones and start clearing the defensive zone with good outlet passes, they will continue their losing ways. I’m afraid that the Rangers have too many defensive liabilities to finish higher than fourth behind the Pens, Devils and Flyers.
