Rangers News: Rangers call up P.A. Parenteau from Hartford
New York, October 27, 2009 - New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that forward P.A. Parenteau has been recalled from the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League (AHL).
Parenteau, 26, has recorded eight goals and six assists for 14 points, along with 12 penalty minutes in nine games with Hartford (AHL) this season. He currently leads the AHL in goals and is tied for the league lead in points. He is also tied for first in the league in power play goals (five) and fourth in power play assists (four). Parenteau has
registered five multi-point efforts this season, including three straight (four goals and seven points) entering today. He notched his first hat trick as a Wolf Pack player, including his first penalty-shot goal with Hartford, on October 10 against Springfield.
Last season, Parenteau finished ninth in the AHL in points with 29 goals and 78 points, and was named a First-Team AHL All-Star. The Hull, Quebec native was acquired by the Rangers from the Chicago Blackhawks on October 11, 2007, in exchange for a conditional draft pick. He was originally Anaheim's ninth round selection, 264th overall, in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.

does this indicate that gabby is probably sitting for at least tomorrow’s game?

well, I don’t want to jump to conclusions, but, I can’t really think it could mean anything else

i dont want to jump to any conclusions either especially about gabby’s health, but to me this smells also of a possible trade in moving someone out even more than just gabby’s health as we talked about last time when they called up grachev because doesnt P.A. have to clear waivers to go back down and as hot as he is in Hartford you have to think some team would look to catch lightning with a cheap forward. So my point is if he has to clear waivers to go down, they cant be looking at this for just the day like the grachev thing where with him it was no harm no foul.

excellent point sir. Someone was floating a rumor on the Ranger boards that Yahoo Sports had a trade rumor about the Rangers, but didn’t have a link and I couldn’t find it

well we have 10 top 9 forwards, and yes anisimov is a top 9 forward.
so idk.
maybe were trading drury and roszival for ovechkin

well the obvious ones are Voros and Higgins because of his play to this point. dont see anyone else getting moved. i also dont see us trading a d-man right now, but it is good to see Sangs and Heik playing so well to start the year in Hartford.

Shot in the Dark
Just speculating on my part, but might they simply opt for Parenteau over Grachev because of the former’s hot start? I’m not sure how Grachev has looked for the Wolfpack thus far, but the powers that be may think they are the ones catching lightning in a bottle with P.A.’s early season performance.
by Reginald Perrin on Oct 27, 2009 5:49 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Grachev shouldnt be up until January at the earliest especially with the current roster we have where we are short on top 3 line spots. grachev has 3G 4A 7pts in 9G with 2G in the last game.

BTW
…Love the obscure Reginald Perrin reference. Can’t remember the last time I heard that name!

So what does it mean?
I can think of 3 things:
a) Gaborik’s not playing against the Isles and they need a top 6 forward
b) They want some flexibility to move Higgins to the 4th line and need a top 9 forward to replace him.
c) They think Parenteau has nothing else to gain from being in Hartford.
d) All of the above.

well, supposedly the Rangers told Parenteau to be ready at the end of camp, looks like he took heed.
This could just be precautionary, like when they called Grachev up two weeks ago in case Cally couldn’t go.
RangerSmurf, you make some good points though

Well
Even I don’t really believe b) there, it means scratching Brashear and Voros both and effectively having a skill 4th line like Higgins-Boyle-Kotalik or something, which I don’t think is all that likely.

Parenteau hasn’t had anything to gain from being in Hartford (besides a salary, of course) for about two years. ;)

I always herd the reason he never got called up was because his defense
was bad.

Maybe...
…just maybe, P. A. gets a real shot here. One thing about Torts is he doesn’t mess around, could be he’s seen enough of an under-producer (fill in the blank) and he gives the kid a shot to make his bones. I’m not advocating one way or the other, but Tortorella’s track record is – once he makes up his mind about somebody – that’s it!
Or he just wants somebody else up here to push the top nine for playing time. Instead of just the rotation on the 4th line. Certainly not beyond Torts to create a little competition.
This is all very interesting. The point about the waivers was a good one. If this was just to give gabby a nite off – they coulda called up Grachev.

The point being...
…it seems Parenteau is done at Hartford. They’d never expose him to waivers to send him back down – so he either sticks with the big club or gets moved. Dontcha think?

SHIT
This could just be precautionary, like when they called Grachev up two weeks ago in case Cally couldn’t go.
but fortunately cally could go.
this doesnt sound good at all to me.
i think the best case would be… Gabby is okay, just a bruised knee. higgins is being benched. voros doesnt see the ice. along with brashear bc they dont do much of anything.
higgins is working out on the PK. thats about all he is doing.
by ImaMoose on Oct 27, 2009 4:20 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I'm sure this is just precautionary
but even if Gaborik does not play against the Isles its not a big deal. Like I said last night no need to go crazy with him, it’s just one game.

well i think this means gabby definetly doesn’t play vs isles either way,
1. because its the isles why risk it
2. we play his old team the wild soon
3. PA Parenteau is called up
by louielounz1 on Oct 27, 2009 5:23 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
im not sure what to think..
if gabby is healthy, now we have 14 forwards with 12 skilled guys.
maybe torts feels that he rather play parenteau than voros.. idk..
i always heard torts doesnt like to keep extra guys up so i really dont know what to think.
like someone said above, p.a. would have to go through waivers to go back down so this doesnt seem like a short-term thing

FYI, Parenteau does not have to clear waivers.
by Dave (BSB) on Oct 27, 2009 6:42 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Dave is correct.
By clearing waivers on September 22 (when he was sent down to Hartford), he is now exempt from waivers for the entire season – providing he plays in at least one game. (CBA 13.4 – Exempt Players)
A Player 25 years old or older who plays in one (1) or more Professional Games in any season shall be exempt from Regular Waivers and Re-Entry Waivers for the remainder of that season.
Additionally, he is exempt from Re-Entry waivers now. This is tricky – and is found in CBA 50.9 (g):
The Re-Entry Waiver procedure will not, however, be applicable to Veteran Minor League Players defined as follows….(ii) for defensemen and forwards, Players who have:
(A) played in 320 or more professional games in North America (NHL, AHL and ECHL), and (B) not spent more than 80 NHL games on NHL roster over the prior two (2) seasons OR more than 40 NHL games on NHL roster in the immediately prior season.
P.A. has well over 320 total ECHL/AHL/NHL games and has none on an NHL roster in the prior 2 years.
So – he’s just as safe a call-up as Grachev, but for completely different reasons. He can be called up and sent down pretty much at will (after he plays one game) for the entire season. And since he’s been by far the best Hartford forward so far this season, it may be a bit of a reward for him.

its the same reason why
Gilroy does not have to pass though waivers

At the risk of self promoting, there’s a much easier version of how waivers work on my blog.

Perhaps Torts is benching one of the under achieveing forwards
and with Parenteau an aging rookie-getting older on fire, he may want to see how he stick. Either way he would have no use down in Hartford at this point.

Sounds good to me.
I noticed PAP was on fire early on. We have some really good talent in the farm system like AA and MDZ have shown us and the rest of the NHL, no reason to keep these guys down if their ready to take this team to another level. I actually got to see some of a free hartford game the other night online and Locke looked really good too. Grech didn’t do much from what I saw.. But it sounds like he is heating up. I say take your pic, get rid of higgins, voros, brash and roz for the performing youngsters.

Hey everyone, new to the banter but I just wanted to know if anyone heard about the king being in a 1 car accident this afternoon. Haven’t seen it reported anywhere else other than wfan but it seems it was a non-issue. Look forward to joining the game threads

Good idea to let Gabby sit at least tonight, and maybe Fri as well, and let Parenteau play.
