Rangers News: Gaborik Update
This from Steve Zipay's blog today. Here are the highlights on Marian Gaborik's situation.
Personally, I believe the Slovakian right winger isn't playing until Sunday afternoon against Boston in the Garden, but there's a chance he'll dress in Minnesota, where he played eight years, on Friday night.
Standing in the locker room with reporters after another practice in which he did not participate ---he was receiving treatment on his right leg, possibly thigh or hamstring, the club is not disclosing---he called himself "day-to-day."
Not playing would be disappointing, Gaborik said. "We don’t play them that often. Definitely it would be something special."
He confirmed that he was still sore from a front of the net collision late in the third period against Phoenix on Monday, but would be on the plane to Minneapolis this afternoon. The team's top scorer, with 18 points, said he initially thought the injury was more severe.
"It’s not that serious," said Gaborik, who skated another shift after the hit before shutting down. "I thought it was going to be worse the way it felt. I have to make sure I do the right thing and treat it and take it day by day. It doesn’t feel great but it feels better."
Well, for a situation that demands constant information and updates this might not quench your thirst, but take this for what it's worth. Gaborik wants to play and is feeling better. Granted he does not feel great, but him calling himself "day-to-day" is a good sign (he is usually pretty honest with his own injures).
So take this for what it's worth. Thoughts?

Here is my thought:
Sign Kovalchuk for next year.
I love Gaborik and he is one of the best players in the league, but I have a feeling he will always miss games due to injuries. It’s not his fault, just the way his body is. Some guys rarely get injured and others get injured a lot.
We need another sniper who rarely gets injured (I know Ilya is injured now lol) and who can put up Gaborik type of stats.

I think it's WAY to early
to even think about thinking about signing someone to replace Gaborik. His injuries were caused by a bad hip which was fixed. He will be fine.

Joe, I think that you can never have enough snipers on your team. Regardless of Gaborik’s health we should try to obtain Kovalchuk. I m not saying now, because he is still under contract and we would have to give up players to get him, but in the off season. He is gonna demand a lot of $$$ but if we can do it without sacrificing our ability to build a good team then we should try to get him

here’s the counter: they have this thing called the salary cap so it cant happen. also if atlanta keeps developing as they are so far this year, he might just want to stay there.

was my next point
You wont get Kovalchuk for leas that 7.5. He can’t fit period. Even if you remove Rozsival (You can’t get rid of Redden and Drury so don’t even try) he wont fit. I’m okay to bank on Gaborik.

exactly everyone talks about oh dump rozi in the minors, dump redden in the minors and tons of space, but sather has yet to dump anyone in the minors and admit his bad judgment on contracts and to get kovy, re-sign Staal, lisin, possibly prospal and girardi you would have to dump both and hope 2 more kids are ready next year. and they certainly arent dumping their captain in the minors, so it is all mute.

btw i would love to dump rozi and maybe redden down there and not have them count against the cap but i dont see sather making that admission.

Dont say you cant get rid of Redden or Drury…anything is possible, remember GOMEZ??
by MattPwrcf1 on Oct 29, 2009 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Gomez did not have a no trade clause
Dury has a full No Movement clause which means that the Rangers can’t even send him to the minors without his approval. He is going nowhere.
Redden only has a limited no trade clause (I think he can distinguish 6 teams he wont accept a trade to) but his 5 years 6.5 a year contract that he has left will act as a no trade clause.

aha…didnt know they had no trade clauses. Either way I cant see Redden/Drury/Rozsival stay with the Rangers for the remainder of their respective contracts. I believe that Sather will find a way….

I wouldn't count on it
Rozsival is the only one possible as of right now and probably for the remainder of his contract

I wouldn’t even worry about the no trade clause. That you can change… What you can’t change is that no one wants them!
by CTrangerfan on Oct 29, 2009 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’m not sure how you think you can change a no trade/no movement clause in a contract?
The only way to do something like that is to negotiate a new contract.
What incentive does Roszival, Redden, Drury or anyone else in their situation have to do something like that??
Wait – I’ll tell you – absolutely none!!
I suspect that there are teams that might be interested in Roszival – but I can’t see anyone having interest in Redden.
Maybe Ottawa will take him back ……
Nahhhhh – never happen.
I think we’re pretty much stuck with them – so we’d better get used to it, and we’d better hope that Tort’s gets through to them now!!
by dbmaven on Oct 29, 2009 5:47 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I was just pointing out that they are untradeable. And yes if someone realy wanted them and the rangers didn’t… then that is reason to renegotiate.
I undertand we are stuck with them.
by CTrangerfan on Oct 30, 2009 9:29 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah… but Gomez may have been the best contract out of all of them. At this point I would trade Rozi, Redden, or Drury for an old set of goalie pads, just to get rid of the cap space. The truth is the only way you can get rid of them is packaging them up with someone you don’t want to get rid of like Staal or MDZ.
Hopefully a buy-out is in the future.
by CTrangerfan on Oct 29, 2009 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
u do know how the buy out system works right…you have to pay for double the amount of years they have left on their contract…look at the lightning and prospal and his contract was a lot cheaper.
let’s take redden if they bought him out next summer.

now rozi’s i might consider just for how bad he is but he should just get dumped in hartford instead. also consider if rozi can look anything near decent he could have value to a cheap owner who wants to look like he is paying more than he is because while his cap hit is 5 mil the next 2 years his actual salary is 4 and 3

Do people ever actually research his injury history?
Out of his 8 seasons, only 2 of them he has missed significantly. Thats it.
People just look like idiots when they assume its hip or groin related, when clearly it isnt, and start talking about Kovalchuk. Just stop. Seriously.
I really hope people know he missed 11 games in 03-04 because of a CONTRACT DISPUTE, and ended up playing 65 games that year, meaning he wouldve played 76 if he had a contract in place at the start of the season, thus missing only 6 games that year.
So he averages 78/82 games a year, pre lockout. He did not however, turn into a PPG player until AFTER the lockout.
AND he didnt start having hip/groin issues UNTIL 06-07. Only 2 of his 8 seasons are where he missed significant time. He played 48 games in 06-07 and then 77 the following year, which he had career year. Then finally he opted for corrective surgery last year and rehabbed for basically the entire season with the exception of 17 games.
Did people really expect him to play on crutches?
Are yuo aware that Bure and Forsberg both average 59 games a year in the career?
Research before you make comments. Gaborik hasn’t been out in his career nearly as much as the media or bitter fans may say. Only 2/8 seasons people.
Relax. He is day to day with a minor leg injury, the first of his career.

We have more important core players that need to be signed like Staal and Girardi.
Not to mention Higgins and Prospal are the only real two that are UFAs next year.
How exactly do you plan on fitting in Kovalchuk?
Kovalchuk is not coming to the Rangers. Bank on it.
by LeeBu on Oct 29, 2009 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree Staal is priority#1 and needs to signed, but Girardi might be expandable.
If Higgins plays the ways he is playing now, he might not get resigned. I like Higgins so I m hoping he gets going soon and becomes a solid player for us.
If Prospal can be signed to a reasonable short term contract then we should keep him.
As far as Kovalchuk goes, many things can happen between now and July so we can always hope, cant we? Maybe Sather will figure out a way to make cap space

Comparing Savard and Kovalchuk's contracts?
You’re not serious I hope.
Kovalchuk is probably sniffing anywhere between $8-11 million from Atlanta. He’ll get it. Im callin it.
Savard? He’ll be asking for between $5-7, and with the cap at a plateau, no team will be willing to overpay. Next year’s cap brings everyone’s market value down.
Kovalchuk is a franchise player, Savard is not, and I dont see him pulling in a contract over 6 next year. If there was a way to take Drury or Redden off our hands, thats certainly doable.

Also
Kessel is in Toronto.
You know, his former linemate? Savard’s numbers could very well take a hit this year.
by LeeBu on Oct 29, 2009 7:35 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i think kessels numbers well go down more than savards. heres my plan.
resign staal and girardi. send down rozi and redden. bring up a rookie and sign a solid dman for like 4 mil over the summer.
let higgins go and resign prospal and lisin with his money. bring up grachev. send down voros and bring up p.a.
get rid of drury and bring in savard. than we win. :)
prospal – savard – gaborik
avery – dubinsky – callahan
grachev – anisimov – lisin
p.a. – boyle – kotalik
brashear
stall – (4 mil dman)
girardi – gilroy
mdz – rookie (sangs/heikkenen)

Lets breakdown Gaborik's career
2000-01 – 71 games played
2001-02 – 78 games played
2002-03 – 81 games played
2003-04 – 65 games played (11 games missed beginning of year due to contract dispute)
2004-05 (lockout)
2005-06 – 65 games played
2006-07 – 48 games played (first real year he missed significant time, and still played more than half of the year)
2007-08 – 77 games played
2008-09 – 17 games played (finally opts for corrective surgery and misses the majority of the year because of rehab)
Gaborik doesn’t miss nearly as much time as people think, and this year’s injury has nothing to do with his prior hip/groin injuries, and based on what we have seen so far this year, he looks fine.

You really don’t have to keep repeating yourself.
Those of us who knew this agree with you.
Those of us who didn’t – well – now they know.
Calling people “idiots” just plain isn’t cool – you can disagree with people and their positions/opinions without name-calling.
I don’t think Kovalchuk is going to be available – and even if he is, I can’t see how the Rangers can put a decent team around him and Gaborik within the constraints of the cap.
There’s plenty of available secondary – or even potential primary scoring – already on this team. The fact that they haven’t stepped up and actually done it is a concern – but it’s not “jump from the ledge” time just yet. Torts himself has said that by mid-season they’ll hopefully stop with the teaching and video work and let their instincts take over. These guys – especially the ones who are struggling – still haven’t really figured out the system.
The bigger concern – and the one that will prevent them from being consistent, and advancing very far in the playoffs – is the lack of strength/toughness on the blueline. "You keep hearing about “….being a harder team to play against….having more jam to your game…” – that’s what’s missing. How many goals against so far this season would have been (potentially) avoided with someone willing to maintain position in the crease and put a body on an encroaching forward? How many ‘runs’ and ‘bumps’ of Henrik?
I agree that Gabby will probably be fine. I also think it’s totally OK to ‘pray’ for that to remain true. But my wish list includes a tough d-man that can level an opponent in front of our net.

If he misses 10 games
Big friggen deal. I’d still take 70 games of Gaborik than 70 games of Gomez. Gaborik at the rate he’s going now will have (1.8 pts per game) 126 points by the end of the season.

Personally
I think it was a much better move than getting Heatley.
Sure Dany can score, not denying that…but so can Gabby, and a lot. Plus, when Prospal had the 2 goal game (vs LA), Gabby tried to get him the puck for the empty net trick, instead of burying it himself. Says a lot to me.
I know its the nature of NY sports fans to fret, but let’s not go too nuts :)

I think Kovalchuk is a possiblity, not to replace Gabby, to play with him. Imagine having a Malkin/Crosby like 1-2 punch like that? We are not going to see Rozi back, count on it. You don’t think Sather could pull the proverbial rabbit out of his ass? Look no further than Gomez to Montreal.

There's a slight difference
Gomez was coming off a season with 58 points, where he logged the toughest minutes for our forwards and was statistically one of our best players.
Rozsival is all of that, except the exact opposite.

the future
A good GM always has their eyes not only on the present, but the future. I do not see what is so bad to contemplate signing people after this season now. I certainly hope Slats has his eyes on next year, and the year after that too.
Personally, i’ve wanted the Rangers to get Kovalchuk for years. He’d be a fabulous addition to the organization/team. I would like to keep Gaborik, it’s obvious that when he’s healthy he is as dynamic and productive as nearly anyone in the league. So for next year, i’d love to see the Rangers have both of those players. IF it is at all possible, I would hope Slats would at least TRY. I would not give up Gaborik to get Kovalchuk, my goal would be to have them both. It might be possible to get him at not necessarily the absolute top dollar if you can promise him a chance to play with a dynamic player like Gaborik, think of what they could do together. That could be a factor if Kovalchuk really wants to win, instead of just going to the highest bidder.
If Gomez’ contract can be moved, pretty much ANYONE can be moved. The extent of the deal is the question. Giving up cap is a good thing if it can be done without giving up too much youth along with it. I have faith in Slats because he has shown that he has the courage to act, and a propensity for swinging deals when needed. He is a sharp guy on all fronts. He may not always do the right thing (in retrospect) but he is a solid GM.
OK enough of that. As for now, if Gaborik needs a few days off, give it to him. Missing a game or two occasionally is no big deal. At this time i’m not terribly concerned, because he doesn’t seem to be. We all need a week off every once in a while.
I think the Rangers should now call up a D man they think is close, and give him a look, Redden can sit a game, and Rozsi can sit a game, to see if indeed the team has a possible replacement already at hand. Preferably a big strong aggressive type, as previously mentioned by someone in this thread.
The running of Henrik needs to stop, and IMMEDIATELY. If the league won’t stop it, the players need to. Priority 1. All players need to be protected from overly aggressive behavior, and none are more important and vulnerable than Henrik.
I think the Rangers have a pretty decent team, decent depth up front. If the secondary scoring could produce just a little bit more than they are now, this team could be very dangerous. I do wish they had some aggressive size on D.

Once again
Gomez was coming off a very good season. Not worth his contract, but he was certainly worth about 2/3-3/4 of the money he was being paid.
Rozsival is worth at best 1/5 of the money he’s being paid, and probably closer to 1/10 right now.
They are two very different contracts. That doesn’t mean it can’t be moved in some way, shape or form. But you’re not going to get anything in the same galaxy as the value they got for Gomez.
And give up the Kovalchuk dream. Atlanta will re-sign him by the end of January.

Wow. If that’s true, they’re trying to get a deal done now before the expected drop in the cap.
(Basically what it says is they’re working on/close to a deal for 9 years/$100 mm – or about 11.3mm per year).
That’s within pennies of the maximum individual player salary in the CBA (no player can earn more than 20% of the total cap figure). I don’t know if that has to be adjusted downward if the cap drops.
Wow.

There’s been articles here and there since September that they’re trying to get a deal done.
Now that article is a week old and he hasn’t actually signed, but I believe there is a minute chance that Atlanta lets him go. I know someone had mentioned that Henrik signed his extension in January because of some cap rule, I’m sure Atlanta would look to utilize that same rule, which is why I don’t think he’ll actually sign until then.
I’d say there’s about a 4% chance he actually hits the open market.

Gomez was a special situation
Montreal got Gomez b/c they were going to get Gionta & hoped that the 2 of them together would form chemistry just like in NJ. Gomez is a playmaker as well, the problem last year was he had no one to make plays to! Plus being in a defensive system (a la Tom Renny) hurts your offensive #s.
The contracts that you probably are thinking of trying to get rid of are EXTREMELY unlikely to go. Drury has a no-movement clause, so forget that idea altogether. Even though he might not be earning the contract he has, he is the captain of the team & brings something to the team that you can’t figure in stats.
Redden has a watered-down no trade clause. With 3 goals last year and declining defensive skills, NO TEAM will want him. Period.
Rozsival is also playing terrible. He’s the only one of these 3 that was BENCHED during a game for poor play. As RangerSmurf pointed out, he’s not playing to his contract.

Before we start jumping the gun on Gaborik lets think about the prospects in the Rangers system, because with the salary cap there’s almost no chance of obtaining Kovalchuk. There’s potential from guys like Grachev, Stepan, Bourque and a few others. I say they just keep developing their players. Hopefully Grachev lives up to his hype, because he’s got the talent to be a stud in this league. Everyone forgets Staal’s contract is up after this season too, and I’m sure he’s going to demand a decent contract. So even if there is room for Kovalchuk, I don’t see it happening because of the free agents the Rangers have at the end of this season.
