Rangers News: Sean Avery targeting tomorrow return
Looks like Sean Avery is trying to make his return tomorrow night against the Capitals. The question will be who does he replace in the lineup?
While you could make arguments for Aaron Voros, Brian Boyle, even Artem Anisimov sitting out when Avery returns, I think the best choice is going to be Enver Lisin, for a few reasons:
- While Lisin hasn't necessarily played badly, he hasn't really stood out either. Let's remember, Lisin is somewhat of a project player, so we will probably see him in and out of the lineup all season as the Rangers continue to develop his game.
- Voros-Boyle-Brashear has been a solid line, and they are being used effectively by John Tortorella. I wouldn't go breaking them up just yet.
- Taking Anisimov out of the lineup would essentially mean you have to break up the VinnyDubiGabby line, (We might need a name for that line) because Prospal would have to drop down and play center. Considering how well this line has played together to start the season, I can't imagine John Tortorella would want to break them up.
What do you guys think, is Lisin the best choice to come out of the lineup for Avery?

I think it depends on what team we’re playing….if we’re a playing a team that is big and physical I would say keep Boyle-Brashear-Voros together, because they have been pretty effective and are big and can certainly play physical.
If we’re playing a team that likes to play an up-tempo offensive type of game I say we take out Voros (bad skater) and keep Lisin who has great speed and good offensive instincts. In the mean time we still have 2 big bodies in the line up in Brashear and Boyle and we can put them out there when we need some physical play
well that is kind of what I alluded to. I think Lisin will be in and out of the lineup all year, he is a project type guy. You make good points though.

Your reasons make sense
But I think Tortorella has liked the way Lisin has played thus far.
Since he’s coming off the injury, I wouldn’t be surprised if Boyle sat tonight and Avery centered the 4th line. That would get him some minutes without overdoing it. I know this is an unpopular tactic, but I think it’s what would make the most sense for this game.
This will be an ongoing thing beyond this game, which is why I don’t think Lisin sits, eventually you have to break up the BBV line to accommodate Avery, b/c I don’t believe Lisin will be the odd man out since his skill set fits quite well with Tortorella’s attack mode style.

I don't see Boyle sitting
Torts seems to trust him on the power play, more and more so each game. Especially against an offense heavy team like the Caps, they’ll want as strong a PK as possible. Personally, I think Voros will go simply because he won’t be needed against the Caps.

Hopefully Voros
I cant stand watching him play. He’s molasses slow and weak for his size, and a horrible fighter.

I agree, he is not a good fighter. But Brashear has not impressed so far either. I expected him to be a lot better.
I have to be honest with you, I’ve been really tough on Voros in the past, but I think he has played ok so far. He worked hard in the off season, and Tortorella likes him. He has been solid on the fourth line, as well as Boyle and Brash

Fine as far as playing hockey, but not doing good in fights so far. That’s what I was referring to, but I think he will came around as a fighter. I don’t think you lose your fighting skills as quickly as hockey skills and Brashear has been one of the best fighters for years. He ll be back….
I think he has been fine in fights.
Actually he has won a couple. I like what I see out of him I really do.

I agree 100% that lisin should be scratched for Avery, Voros has been playing much better than Lisin thus far and size is good to have right now Avery replaces anything lisin could do and then some. Plus now we have an aggressive player to go along with that style, with Avery bringing in your face hockey with hitting, fighting, and scoring, the identity of the team in my book. That’s also why he’ll wear an A tomorrow. :)
Well maybe not tomorrow, Zipay now saying Avery may wait until they play the Ducks

Even if Avery is not coming back tomorrow I’d be interested to see these lines:
Prospal-Dubinsky-Gaborik
Higgins-Drury-Kotalik
Avery-Anisimov-Callahan
Lisin-Boyle-Brashear
I think that there is 3 strong lines there. I know that people don’t want to see Cally on the 3rd line but honestly if the chemistry works out then the 2nd line could interchangable here. I only suggest this because I feel like outside of the top line we aren’t really generating much. I think it would do a little good to try Kotalik with Drury, who all ready have chemistry. And Cally would be great influence on Anisimov. Plus it would be a fun line to watch.
Of course just playing around with the idea.
You may have something there

That was the lines that I imagined when Avery comes back
Voros goes, and Lisin brings a little zip to the 4th line. Brashear even had some nice passes in the two wins. It’d be nice if him and Boyle could dump it in and have Lisin go get it occassionally…
Voros
I think it will be Voros for the simple reason is that he is an Avery-style player with less talent. Lisin has been getting 11-16 mins a game thus far (way more than Anisimov), and he has not been a defensive liability (let’s see if that continues). I think if anything Lisin moves down to Voros’ spot but will at least play and should get some pp time as he has thus far.
Voros or Lisin
I haven’t been a fan of Voros but have to say the 4th line has played pretty well together so far. Lisin, while he has speed, has no defensive sense.
I’d put Avery in Lisin’s spot and leave the lines as is.
Avery can give a little grit to the 3rd line while giving AA room to create chances and draw guys to him so Kotalik can get cannon blasts off (hopefully hitting the net.)
put avery in lisins spot.
if were playing games that will be up tempo lisin can be used instead of voros most likely.
and id like to see kotalik with drury and higgins. and callhan with anisimov and avery.
they can be the 2nd and 3rd lines, either way u want it, and play about the same amount of time.
Prospal-Dubinsky-Gaborik
Higgins-Drury-Kotalik
Avery-Anisimov-Callahan
Brashear-Boyle-Voros/Lisin
