Rangers News: Evgeny Grachev called up from Hartford
Well that didn't take long:
The Rangers have recalled Evgeny Grachev from Hartford, here is the release:
NEW YORK RANGERS TRANSACTION UPDATE
New York, October 8, 2009 - New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that forward Evgeny Grachev has been recalled from the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League (AHL).
Grachev, 19, made his AHL debut with Hartford on October 3 at Binghamton. Last season, he captured the Emms Family Award as the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Rookie of the Year, while skating with Brampton. He led all OHL rookies in goals (40) and points (80), and ranked sixth in assists (40). Grachev ranked fifth among all league skaters in goals and finished 13th in points. He also ranked fourth in the league with a plus-48 rating and tied for ninth with six game-winning goals. During the OHL playoffs, Grachev finished seventh in the league in points (25), tied for fifth in goals (11) and eighth in assists (14).
The Khabarovsk, Russia native was originally the Rangers third round selection, 75th overall, in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.
The Blueshirts return to action tonight when they will face off against the Washington Capitals at Verizon Center (7:00 PM). The game will be televised live on MSG Network and can be heard on 970 The Apple.
UPDATE: Steve Zipay has the following on his site:
Team says Callahan suffered an upper body injury from the morning skate. I did not see him in pain anywhere. Back perhaps? Sounds precautionary, but if he can't go, assume Grachev can make it here from Hartford by 7.

Is Someone Going Down
Or are they just going to scratch Lisin or Voros?
No word on anyone going down yet. This leaves the roster at 23.
It’s a bit of a head scratcher honestly. If Avery is coming back this weekend, why the need for Grachev?
Call it a hunch, and nothing else: The Rangers may have a trade in the works

Either that...
Or Tortorella is more disappointed with some forward than we initially thought.

Maybe
Avery’s knee is worse then MGMT thought when they made the decision to send Grachev down? His return date seems have gotten pushed back 2x now and, IIRC, people had speculated that Grachev was going to stay up on the third line if Avery was out for awhile.
FWIW, our third line hasn’t looked great this season and perhaps adding Grachev to it and dropping Lisin to the 4th line, moving Voros or Boyle to the press box, will shake things up a bit. I doubt they called him up to sit him out. . .

Yeah but even so why bring Grachev up?
The team is working out well right now, unless Torts is gonna bench Lisin and make Grachev play 3rd line minutes.

By the way, I'll be at the game tonight
Unfortunately, I’ll have to sit with a bunch of Caps fans including a REALLY annoying coworker of mine.
Is that on HF? Rob Luker just sent me a text that said that was going around HF

Well, the good news:
There’s a chance I’ll see Grachev’s NHL debut in person!
well it sounds now more like he is a “just in case” for Callahan. I don’t think you can underestimate what it means that he is the first forward they called up though.

Agreed
They need a healthy body to plug in if Cally can’t go. No shock to me that he’s the man called up; he was the last one sent down and has mad skills.

Totally
It means they think he’s just about damned near ready as it is. That’s awesome.

so
Prospal – Dubi – Gabby
Higgins – Drury – Kotalik
Grachev – Artem – Lisin
and grachev goes back down when either aves or cally is back.
I’ll tell you what, that EAE line was fun in preseason, anxious to see them tonight

not to rain on the parade about Grachev being the first up and i do think in large part it is skill based, but lets not forget the other candidates would have to go through waivers to get back up here and go back down and if this is short term it is not worth that kind of hassle.
good point, hadn’t thought of that

somethings a bit odd.
all i here about torts is he doesnt like spare parts.
my guess is with avery out tonight and maybe a few more games, and cally possibly out they needed a skilled player who can play with AA and lisin for a bit.
grachev ddint have to go through waivers or any of that, and im sure they want to see him play at the nhl level too.
i believe he stays until avery and cally are 100%. at that point lisin moves to the fourth and rotates with voros depending on what type of game were getting ourself into (speed and skill or grit)
LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
so you just wanted to repeat everything already said…good job. lol.

This is some interesting news. Not something I expected to see as I signed on.
Now all he needs is a highlight reel goal so Sam and Joe can stop talking about Ovechkin like they did last time…
