Well we said from the get-go that this was going to be a big measuring stick for the Rangers, especially their youth on D. They answered that call, and the Rangers ground out a gut-check 4-3 win. Well you all have me doing the recap tonight so you know the drill. Good, Average and the bad.

Rangers vs Capitals coverage

Rangers vs Capitals recap

Rangers vs Capitals boxscore

The Great (I had to include a new category for these three):

  • Marian Gaborik. There is a huge difference between having a perennial sniper on your team and a wanna be. You saw that difference tonight. Two brilliant goals from the slot, one game tying and one game winning, giving him 4 goals and 2 assists in 4 games. And don't tell me he hot lucky because the puck trickled into the net. The reason why that happened is because his shot was so quick that before Jose Theodore could react the puck was under him.
  • Marc Staal. Man you really can't say enough about this kid. He is without a doubt the Rangers best defenseman and without him this penalty kill would be lost. Without him patrolling the blue-line I don't know where the Rangers would be.
  • Chris Drury. Didn't score a goal or put up an assist but my God this man had a great game. He was all over the place blocking shots, clearing the puck and playing great defensivley. He even took a slap shot straight to the chest on the penalty kill and finished his shift. Can't say enough about him tonight.

The Good:

  • Michael Del Zotto. Man are you falling for this kid like I am, he actually looks like (through 4 games folks) a power play quarter back. Without his vision and a perfect pass Gaborik doesn't bury that first goal. He was good defensively too, against the best offensive team in the league.
  • Henrik Lundqvist. Yeah, he gave up the rough goal in the third but aside from that he was pretty brilliant. Jim and I disagree here but I think he kept us in the game and was great on the PK.
  • Ryan Callahan. Finally got his first goal of the season. You really can't say enough about this kids overall effort. The goal he scored was pure hustle seeing as how he rushed up the ice after killing off an entire penalty. Love him, love him having the A and I love Torts going with him when it matters.
  • Ales Kotalik. Scored a beautiful goal and played a very good overall game. I know he didn't connect on the power play but man does he have a hell of a shot. He makes the power play much more lethal.
  • Chris Higgins. Was all over the ice, too bad he didn't score he deserved one. He made one or two brilliant moves and took great shots. Once he lights the lamp he is going to get hot.

Click after the jump for more analysis!

Star-divide

The Average:

  • Wade Redden. Again he played a pretty solid game but made his gaffs. Regardless when he wasn't on the ice I missed him. Although that might have been the poor play of Dan Girardi and Michael Rozsival.
  • Matt Gilroy. Was good at times invisible others. He has all the makings of a great player he just needs to get himself a little settled. Regardless solid performance tonight.
  • Brandon Dubinsky. He looked pretty good, skated well and created chances.

The Bad:

  • Dan Girardi. Played a pretty bad game for a guy who was called out by his coach. He made a few horrible turn overs and looked pretty shaky all game. He needs to play better or else he might be shipped out by the trade deadline.
  • Michael Rozsival. There really aren't enough family friendly words to describe how badly he played. He was benched the entire third period. He deserved it.

gaborik goals..

do not know if anyone has mentioned this yet but all 4 of gaborik’s goals have come in the 3rd period.. so not only is he scoring but in the most important time in the clutch when they really need it!!

Is Girardi that bad...

or is it cuz Rosival’s so bad that Girardi just finds himself out of position because of it?

What the f$%k is the internet?

by FreeBradshaw on Oct 8, 2009 10:32 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

thats what I said..

last year redden was terrible partly because of how bad rosizval was.. he needs to go. make a trade or bring a kid up because rosival has been terrible

by kiop900 on Oct 8, 2009 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

that makes absolutely no sense since Girardi is paired with Staal so they have no impact on each other.

by mleetch352 on Oct 8, 2009 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

has he?

Could’ve swore Girardi was paired with Rozi the first few games. Maybe it was after the benching he was paired with Staal?

Or Rozival’s suck could have stank onto the ice and make Girardi play like ass too….

What the f$%k is the internet?

by FreeBradshaw on Oct 8, 2009 10:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

take a look at all the game lineups. the pairs in each game have been Staal – Girardi, Redden – Gilroy and Rozi -MDZ. Rozi has played with Redden on the PK, but not with Girardi unless it was on a random shift.

by mleetch352 on Oct 8, 2009 10:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Giradi is frustrating as

. Really annoyed where at one point he eased up because it looked like a penalty might be called, and that allowed the Caps to turn the puck over in our zone. Not seeing much of Rozsival spoke volumes, he has had a pretty poor opening to this year. Agree with everything really, can’t say enough about the combination of Staal/Callahan and Drury on the PK, they were truly fantastic, especially Drury I thought.

I don’t know if the Rangers will trade Girardi. He had a bad game yes, but everyone has a bad game once in a while… unless your name is Michal Rozsival.

girardi has been our 5th best d-man in all 4 games so it is not just one bad game…he has had probably 1 very good period all season. he is just thinking too much is my thought on it because he wants to listen to the coaches who want him to be more offensive but it is screwing with what he already knows.

I have confidence Girardi will bounce back from the slow start.

I still think he’s adjusting to the attacking style – and hope he adapts.

If he doesn’t, this will be his last year in Blue.

It should be noted that he ended up with the most ice time of any D-man tonight –
 24:04 and he was a plus-2

Obviously with Roszival in Chateau Bow-Wow, you knew everyone else was getting a lot of time – but I really didn’t expect Girardi to have the most…..

by dbmaven on Oct 8, 2009 11:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

and that is why +/- is one of the most useless stats in the game as he was on the ice when cally single handedly scored his goal, not sure which other he was out there for. i believe his ice time was so high because of Rozi getting benched as i think he played something like 1/2 the 3rd as MDZ still isnt getting much late time, so for the 3rd they basically played 4 d-men. and it was only a 7 second edge on staal.

Joe I agree with everything said except Gilroy statement

Thought Gilroy was Gilroy and that is just what we need. Thought he was brilliant on Ovechkin a few times defensively. I will never fault him for pushing this squad and taking chances. I think the last Pre-Season game against Washington Gilroy was out, remember the Rangers lost that game…..

Gaborik was so strong tonight in the third period I had to pinch myself. Still cannot belive we have him. He is a loaded weapon.

Watching Rozival is like pushing pins into my eyes………..

is it just me or just about everytime the caps had a quality scoring chance u are staring at the back of rosi’s jersey(bc he is out of position and pointing in the wrong direction. omg redden should buy him a car the way hes taken the heat off of him. girardi looks lost at times, dont know if the run n gun system is the one for him. i hope not bc i do like him

gabby and staal have been unbelievable, no need to say anything else. who knows where we would stand without these 2 players, and ofcourse throw hank in that mix.

higgins has impressed me and fits in beautifully with drury and cally. he has missed some scoring chances and sooner or later those shots will be hitting twine.

I thought Gilroy looked good

Better than Del Zotto. I thought MDZ made a few major mistakes that could have turned into goals. Gilroy was much more noticeable on offense, and I love his recovery speed when he does make an error.

I can live with a season of Redden playing like this. I barely noticed him at all, and as sad as that is to say about a $6.5 million player, that’s a good thing.

Two other guys making the most of their limited ice time are Boyle and Lisin.

Lisin, it appears, is starting to “get” the system – he made a couple of nice backchecks in the defensive zone that to me were noticeable. And if Boyle really learns to use those soft hands with is size and power, he could become another “power center” somewhere down the road.

Lots of upside to both these guys – hope they continue to improve as the games go on.

Couple of dumb penalties (Voros, Brashear 3rd period) – and Torts wasn’t shy about voicing his displeasure to Voros….

Overall some pretty solid play all around.

by Conway on Oct 8, 2009 11:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Tortorella is liable to break him of his nasty extended stick/clutching that leads to these weak penalties – possibly it will take him breaking a stick over Voros’ helmet. I wouldn’t put it past him…..

Allow me to pick the nit

Del Zotto’s great neutral-zone pass lead to Gaborik’s second goal. And I’d put Cali in the great section. Earlier today we weren’t sure if he’d played, but what ever is ailing his upper-body didn’t stop him from doing his thing. That shorthanded sequence where he created two opportunities and buried the second one was amazing.

by XLII on Oct 8, 2009 11:04 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

You’re dead right about MDZ. His vision and ability to lay a long laser pass right on the tape of a breaking forward has been downright impressive. But his defensive lapses are still troubling. Clearly that’s what the coaching staff is working with him on – each game the gaffes seem to be fewer and slightly less deadly.

Cali had a crushing hit on someone (don’t recall who) late in the third in the offensive zone – and was all over the ice as usual. Glad he got his first goal.

by dbmaven on Oct 8, 2009 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well Tortorella already admitted to

helping MDZ with his defense and not even touching his offense. Like I said before I will gladly deal with MDZ’s “growing pains” defensivley this season. But with 4 points in 4 games (and two goals) I am LOVING what I am seeing from him.

Callahan definitely belongs in the “Great” Section. He and Dubinsky are the only guys on this team who throw a hit. It is maddening.

I accidently went to a Capital SBNation Site. The writer of the article said he would do nasty things in order to have Callahan or Dubinsky. Those guys plus Staal and LQ are the backbone of this team for years to come.

Gaborik obviously is as well, just want to see more of the same. I still worry about his durability. I missed both of his goals so I can’t comment but heck, he is a stud. Having a guy who can put up points like that, is a great thing.

by Thomas B on Oct 8, 2009 11:40 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I will disagree with you a little here

I think that Staal liks to throw alot of hits and once Avery comes back you know he will too. So does brashear, Voros and Boyle they just don’t play as much

Gilroy

Gilroy looked good to me. I was especially impressed with him when Torts started letting him play on the PK and, of course, in the 3rd period when Rozy obviously wasn’t an option. I think Gilroy is growing up extremely fast here. He might still make the occasional mistake but he’s also making the occasionally brilliant play on both sides of the ice.

Disappointed

That there is no mention of Anisimov in the recap, and none in the comments either.

I thought AA played well with limited ice time. Now I don’t know if he got motivated by Grachev being around, but he was all over the ice tonight, and made a sweet little pass to set up the Kotalik goal.

He should definitely at least have made ‘good’ status.

Voros should go in the bad too. But we can’t name everyone.

For the first time in the regular season Neese was playing with confidence and we saw the results. His assist was very impressive and he was in a position to score if Kotalik didn’t mange to squeak that backhander by Theo.

Del Zotto & Gilroy are two Brian Leetch's

Del Zotto has the vision and the nice passing abillity of Brian Leetch, while Gilroy can join in on the attack and can attack the net all by himself like what Leetch did. These two young guys are going to be great for the Rangers throughout the years.

Callahan was gassed at the end of his P.K. session and still had enough in the tank to go for that rush and backhanded beauty thru the 5-hole.

I agree with everyone. It’s time to say goodbye to Rozsival. He can’t keep up and he looks slow in this system. Other than that, it was a fabulous win by the Rangers.

by NYR #35 Richter on Oct 9, 2009 2:48 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Leetch???

I think it’s waaaaayyy too soon to call either “jersey to the rafters”, “all time great” Rangers, but they do look like 2 very good rookies through 4 games.

I enjoyed the game of both Gilroy and MDZ. They’re defensive zone mistakes weren’t too glaring, or too common. Offensively they are excellent.

AA was very involved for part of the game and disappeared at times. OK for a rookie though.

I’m starting to eat my words and loving it.

by NYdemo on Oct 9, 2009 5:05 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed on Rozsival

Agreed on Callahan

Diasagree on Leetch. Brian Leetch is an all time great. All time. Great. You cannot compare either of those two to Brian Leetch. If you want to say they do things that remind you of Leetch, fine. But it’s only 4 games, and the bumps in the road are inevitable.

Great game!

I thought Drury, Higgins and Callahan were the 3 best forwards for the Rangers. Those guys worked hard in that game. Prospal quietly had another good game. I thought Gaborik was invisible for most of the game. He showed up when we needed him the most and thats what matters.

I thought 5 of the 6 d-men played pretty well. I guess I’m in the minority but after that early give away, I thought Girardi played a decent game. Staal was great. I thought Gilroy and Redden both had strong games. MDZ played a nice quiet game in his zone. He didn’t make any glaring mistakes but he didn’t really stand out at even strength. I didn’t think he looked all that good on the first few powerplays either but that was a great a pass to Gaborik when it counted.

Rozival was horrible. Bad give away. Another lazy penalty. With 2 rookies on the blue line, Rozival has to be better or has to be replaced with another veteran.

I was also encouraged by the 3rd line. I thought AA, Lisin and Kotalik were more involved. Nice goal from Kotalik. Boyle played pretty well too. I’m becoming mildly curious what Boyle would do if he had some more talented wingers.

The officiating was also soft. We’ve seen Stephane Auger a few times already this year. He’s fair but he calls some soft penalties. That interference call against Higgins was very weak.

by J76 on Oct 9, 2009 7:22 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The refereeing against Washington is always going to be questionable. But hey, we got the win, we’ll leave the whining about the officiating to the Caps fans.

A good gritty comeback win!!

I agree with everyone, Rozsival must go. bring up Cory Potter. How long do we go with this guy? How long do you wait for him to turn it around?
Also, how long do we go with Voros? He shows me nothing but skating in sand and taking dumb penalities. There has to be a deserving banger in Hartford to bring up.

That’s enough complaining – a great game and a well deserved win.

girardi

he’ll bounce back…this kid has shown he can play at this level and play very well…he’s also lucky that rosival has been terrible so he’ll get more ice time to prove he’s worth keeping

man this team is pretty fun to watch…that first period was terrible…but after that you saw them hustle like crazy and get rewarded for it…there was no way the rangers of last year would have come back from a game like this last year…i 100% guarantee you renney would have put out the 4th line after the caps 3rd goal…but whatever hes not here anymore

Rosival sucks

by nutz_35 on Oct 9, 2009 9:38 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I was at this game, and what I saw was completely different. Drury was invisible, Dubinsky had a good game, and did Callahan. Lundqvist had his moments, and was solid in the first period, but after he’d gotten run a couple of times in the second he was a little shaky the rest of the game. Staal did have a great game, and I thought that Gilroy did a good job as well.

Well, for as much as the defensemen did anything. There really wasn’t any defense being played in that game – it was all wide open. Timing was still, passes were very sloppy, and goaltending wasn’t as steady as it could’ve been – for both teams. Still, it was a highly entertaining game. So glad I went!

Basically, benching Rozsival in the third saved the game by sending a message that no one is safe. Also, funny Cally quote that he had that extra step in the third period because of the extra laps at Camp Torturella.

contradictions

i find it very interesting that some people here say Girardi had a bad game, while some of the beat writers say he was excellent! Personally i thought he was largely annoynmous (which isnt always a bad thing) so im stuck in between the two opinions.

Either way, im still encourged that our best 3 defencemen so far this season are 19, 22 and 25 respectively. Add Mcdonagh, Sanguinetti and one of the Hartford crew (sauer, Potter etc) in the mix within the next 12 months and it bodes very well…..

I gotta be honest here Jurge

no one should be saying that Girardi had a great game last night. I though he was pretty out of position most of the game.

Being a DirecTV subscriber, I have the loss of Versus, but the benefit of recording the game on one of my HD_DVRs, then watching it on my PC on a 26" HD monitor. I can slo-mo, stop action, etc and rewind to see where people are as plays progress.

I watched the game again paying special attention to the “off names” plus Girardi.

Honestly, while I wouldn’t call Girardi’s play “great” – he was solid. On Rob’s scale of 1 to 10 – where to me “5” means ’what’s expected of an NHL level player at that position" – he was a 5 or 6. He didn’t do much of anything that stood out either good or bad – but he played well – and he did it with a lot more ice-time that usual because the dog-house was full (of Roszival).

Ranger Smurf commented on Anisimov earlier – and he’s right – Artie was more noticeable than he’s been in any other game. He did disappear for a while – but he made some good plays (esp the assist on Kotalik’s goal) and was taking the body well. Lisin also impressed me for his hustle, taking the body and persistence. Both of them need to do it more consistently. Higgins was another one who was more noticeable last night – once he pots his first goal I think they’ll come in waves – you can see that he’s still doing a bit too much ‘thinking’ – when it’s instinctive he’ll be a force.

Overall – all the players appear to be settling into Tort’s system – no where near as many defensive lapses – better positional play, etc. Still work to do – but the early signs are encouraging.

Is it time for a Rozy healthy scratch? If so, who replaces him?

by Lunkwill Fook on Oct 9, 2009 11:32 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I suspect that if Semenov were here – or another veteran d-man – Roszival would be scratched from the next game (Sunday). Since they’re only carrying 6, there aren’t any options, and I don’t think they’ll call up anyone from Hartford yet.

But the message is “you’re on a short leash”. If Roszival doesn’t respond, you’re liable to see some drastic action.

So far, Torts seems to be a pretty fair guy. He sent Rozsival a message by sitting him last night. Even if there was someone spare to take his place, I think Torts would give him a chance to respond before making him a healthy scratch.

Yea, I find it when people use the word “rag” it is pathetic. I was reading an article and someone wrote in the comments “crapitals”, which is just plain stupid. The terms are meant to be derogatory, but I find they are petty and childish.

Some Thoughts

I think that Girardi played better than everyone has been saying. I’m not saying he was great or a even in the top 3 on the team. But he played well in his own end, hustled and worked hard. I think there is definite room for improvement, and if he wants to stay with the Rangers I think there has to be. But overall he has gotten consistently better as the season has gone on.

Rosi is another story, for every good play he makes he makes a bad one or takes a bad penalty. I think that for whatever reason he is hesitant. It looks like he is over thinking everything out there and he needs to just settle down and play and play at the same level as everyone else.

I think the glaringly bad player last night was Voros. I’ve never been down on him before but aside from running around with enthusiasm he was lackluster in almost every aspect. That penalty he took was just stupid. It wasn’t necessary and he obviously wasn’t thinking when he took it. And it produced a goal for the Caps. Not Good. I think he should be shipped down to the AHL as soon as Avery is back.

and have Avery play defense?

Lolm the problem is that without semenov the Rangers have no other options for him at D

There are always options

But right now none of them are very attractive, or in some cases affordable.

as of right now the only realistic option

Is to keep giving him chances. Give him a few more games but if this continues they might have to trade him drop him to the AHL or scratch him.

The comforting thing is that by being benched, Tortorella let everyone know he’s well-aware that Rozsival has sucked thus far, and he’ll do something about it if it continues.

veteran D-man

are there any guys like mccarty available to sign? I was thinking if we could get a stable veteran who knows how to play and win maybe they could keep roszi as the seventh/healthy scratch

I’m not saying to send any of the D-men down. Just Voros. We’ll have to live with Roscival until Sather can pull another rabbit out of his hat and trade him or Redden away like he did Gomez.

hmm. well when avery is well i suppose grachev will be sent down. i say this because i believe we will keep 13 forwards. and no reason to keep grachev in the nhl if hes gonna play limited 4th line minutes or not any at all. voros is much better suited for that job
