How learning to evaluate the Rangers can keep you focused on the positive

[Note by Jim Schmiedeberg, our good friend Eddie "The Mouth" Gieck is going to expand his duties as co-host of Blueshirt Banter Radio and contribute here on the site as well. We welcome his unique point of view, as well as his expansive knowledge of Ranger history.]

I think every Ranger fan should root as hard as they can on any given  Blueshirt game night, the consummate Ranger fan should always maintain optimism that the club will be able to win a contest no matter how tough their opponent and no matter how dire the strait.

While he or she is doing that, try as a side project to gauge a Ranger  performance not solely on a Win-. Loss basis but on a criteria of how well the younger players are doing.

I say this because although I wish with all my life force that the Rangers will win the Stanley Cup in 2010, the reality is they probably will not and as blasphemous as that may sound, we as Ranger fans are well aware of our teams glaring shortcomings compared to some of the more "together" elite teams in the league, and although there is always hope our teams past history doesn't show much positive surprises.

So next time the Rangers are playing, keep a mental checklist of how Brian Boyle is doing on faceoffs, How is his effectiveness on wing compared to Center? Try to gauge Enver Lisin's skill level and effort from game to game. Determine if Michael Del Zotto is indeed the real deal on both ends of the ice,  Evaluate if Matt Gilroy is progressing or regressing. Ponder if Artem Anisimov's development would prosper more quickly with more ice time.

The reason I suggest this young guns type of checklist is because whether you believe it or not the Rangers in the near future will be a yearly consideration to win the Stanley Cup.  I assure you down the road this team will be young and exciting  and an Atlantic Division force. Unfortunately,  the club is stuck with a trio of absurd long term contracts that are presently gumming up the works in epic proportion and stifling the teams overall progression even if you discount the youth..

Rangers Director of player personnel Gordie Clark has done a wonderful job drafting and the Rangers have one of the better rated prospect rankings in the entire NHL, so the next time you watch the game, instead of pulling your hair about a yet another failed clear by Michal Roszival, save yourself the aggravation and instead embrace the positive, that better days are ahead. So for now smile and give a  silent cheer every time you see a 19 yr old Michael Del Zotto makes a terrific first pass out of the zone.

Look I’m a die hard ranger fan but we are a soft team and in this league you can’t get far being so soft. Our captain got knocked out by a cheap hit and all we did was have redden love tap glencross, are we serious??..why if iginla was knocked out, every player would have gone after us..I’d love to know if anyone would disagree with me..and I know Avery said drury would have rathered the team get the two points but that doesn’t matter, stand up for yor teammates let alone your captain who would give an arm for anyone else on our team

remember the avery effect? and how important he is to this team? well he hasnt made much of an impact this year… besides his first few games back.
Ryan callahan also is a huge dissapointment.
besides higgins and drury also sucking, there is alot of underachievement going on around this team from players expected to do ok.
its great to see the off season aquisitions of prospal gaborik and kotalik cashing in.
its just frustrating to see the guys you expect to progress a little take giant steps back.

Callahan a huge dissapointment?

Gonna disagree with you on that. Cally is every night one of the rangers best players. He plays hard every shift, one of the few Rangers who throw the body around, and he just does all the “little” things that help to win games. Sure he isn’t scoring much but what did you expect from him? 30-35 goals? He isn’t a pure goal scorer and he’s playing with Drury and Higgins who are having awful offensive seasons. If he were put on with Gaborik and Prospal he’d have a 30+ goal season but for whatever reason Torts doesn’t put him on the first line.

Callahan hasn’t as you say “taken a giant step back”.
Dubinsky on the other hand….

As far as work ethic and doing the little things away from the puck, Callahan has been great and Dubi has been pretty good, too. As far as putting up points, both have disappointed so far.

yeah i expect production out of these players. Good effort night in and night out is what 3rd and 4th line players are made of. Petr Prucha didnt hold well in new york once his production dropped.
I like these young guys alot, but if they stop progressing, trade them while you can. maybe theyll blossom somewhere else, but few blossom in NYC.
and yes, callahan has been VERY disappointing. His effort shows at times, but hes been a non factor in games nearly all year. besides the powerplay, and penalty kill, not much is clicking.

Avery hasn’t made an impact because Torts isn’t playing him for more than 10 minutes a game. With Drury out I’d expect him to see some more ice time on a line with Callahan and possibly Anisimov. That solves the Anisimov problem of getting him more ice time.

Higgins has played well for most of the year, except for the four or so games when his mind was nowhere to be found. He could have close to 10 goals already with how he’s played. Lay off him, he’s coming around, and should be fine. He’ll probably split time on the second line with Avery, and should see a boost to his game now that Anisimov will be the prime play maker on that line. Him and Cally just need to work hard in the corners and drive to the net.

I think the real answer we will be getting over the next week or two will be “How does this team play without Chris Drury clogging up the middle?” Its possible the team will be a more free flowing and faster group, and it could be a look to the future as well.

I worry about the PK now with dubinsky and Drury out.

I don't disagree

Look, I like the positive enthusiasm, but with the Rangers being a fringe team for five years now, its wearing thin quickly.

Concentrating on how the young guys are doing is something every team does, but more specifically its what non-playoff teams do. The Rangers will be a fringe team (5-8 Eastern Conference) again this season, so at the end of the day the results truly do matter.

Well

Gaborik, Del Zotto, Prospal, and Lundvquist have really been carrying the team so far but if we get Cally, Duby, Higgins and Drury to do their scoring we could be put in the Elite category until then we are a 4 game above .500 team the rest of the way. i agree we have been playing soft Avery needs to start getting physical like he used to.

avery is in a difficult spot...

if he does anything close to resembling a penalty it will be called…that puts him and then rangers in a tough position…i think avery needs to play with an edge again…if he gets a penalty then so be it at least he will excite the crowd and his team in the process
