Rangers Analysis: At the Quarter Pole

The Rangers have played 20 games, essentially a quarter of the season is in the books already. I think to say this team is an enigma would be an understatement. They hit the ground running, getting off to a 7-1 start that had most fans revising their modest expectations for the Blueshirts heading into the season.

But since the hot start, the Rangers have gone a meager 4-7-1, and many fans are spitting out the Kool-Aid they were drinking by the gallon in October. As they begin to start the next quarter against the Caps tomorrow night at the Garden, let's take a look at what's going right and wrong with this team:

What's going right:

Marian Gaborik: The biggest roll of the dice in NHL free agency is paying huge dividends thus far for the Rangers. Gaborik has been the Rangers best player, already with 13 goals and 12 assists. Of course it has not been without its drama, as Ranger Nation held its collective breath while Gabby sat out two games with a knee injury.

Vinny Prospal: The best million-plus dollars the Rangers have ever spent. Prospal has been a gem, playing wing, center, and even earning himself an "A" on the sweater. Without Gabby and Vinny, the Rangers would be neighbors to the Leafs and Canes in the EastCon standings.

Michael Del Zotto: With 15 points in his first 20 NHL games, he has been a big part of the resurrection of the Rangers power play. His defense has been better than most expected. Definite early candidate for the Calder Trophy.

Henrik Lundqvist: I would make the argument here (and I know some of you agree) that Hank has not looked like the Lundqvist of previous years. There have been more goals that would be classified as "on Lundy" than usual. But the other side of the argument is that he is still one of the best in the league.

The Power Play: After finishing 29th overall last year, this year it has been a Ranger strength, currently ranked 9th overall. In addition to Gaborik, Prospal, and Zots, Ales Kotalik has been a big part of their success with the man advantage. It's been slumping of late, but overall you have to be thrilled with the improvement.

The Penalty Kill: Many thought the loss of Blair Betts and Freddie Sjostrom would leave the Rangers weak when down a man. In reality, they really haven't lost a step, and are third in the league at killing penalties.

What's Going Wrong after the jump......

Star-divide

What's Going Wrong:

Chemistry: The first few weeks of the season for the Rangers, everything was clicking offensively. Now, it seems as though these Rangers met on a "speed date" and went right to the altar. Was it all just "beginner's luck"? Only Gaborik and Prospal have clicked consistently all year long, everything else has been a crapshoot.

Brandon Dubinsky: While you could make the argument that with 10 points in 18 games, Dubi isn't really "going wrong", but seven of those points came in three games. Dubinsky lost his spot on the first line, was benched in the Rangers loss to the Canadiens. Tortorella has been critical of him, and I still maintain Torts has it out for Dubinsky because of the holdout. Dubinsky is currently out 3-6 weeks with a broken bone in his hand, and hopefully will find his game upon his return, or he may find himself on the trading block.

Ryan Callahan: While Ryan has played well in some areas, his scoring is not there right now when the Rangers need it most. This is when an Alternate earns his letter.

Chris Higgins: One of the main components in the Scott Gomez trade, Higgins has been a major disappointment so far in New York with only two goals. He's being used at center now with the injuries to Dubinsky and Chris Drury.

Michael Rozsival: Many Ranger fans expected a bounce-back year from Rozy, but so far it hasn't happened. Whether the surgery he had took something out of him, or he has just gotten old, he has been terrible through the first 6 weeks of the season.

Sean Avery: We discussed last week whether Sean was holding back because of the bullseye on his sweater, or because the coaching staff had the reins on him. Either way, this is not the Sean Avery that the Rangers need.

Marc Staal and Matt Gilroy: I lumped these two together because I think they are two heads of the same coin. I think Staal's game is regressing because he is a defensive defenseman worrying too much about his offense, and Gilroy is an offensive defenseman worried too much about his defense. I've said it a hundred times, I think these two should be paired together so they can both focus on doing what they do best.

Right now, 11-8-1 at face value looks like a decent record, but it's the way they got there that has us all concerned. Plenty to work on for the next twenty, starting tomorrow night against the Caps.

The Staal-Gilroy point is a great one as well.

Yeah I’ve been waving the Staal-Gilroy pairing banner for a couple of weeks, but so far no one is listening. I really think they would compliment each other nicely.

Opposites Attract

Giradi-Staal makes Staal try to get offensive and sometimes force it because Girardi is more of a stay-at-home than he is.

Meanwhile, Gilroy-Redden/Rozi isn’t the best mix either because Gilroy likes to jump up while Redden and Rozi need help out back because their strengths are moving the puck up smartly. Gilroy then leaves one of them out to dry sometimes and its just a part of the game.

A kid I graduated with got all-state my senior year because he played with a very good and under-rated stay-at-home D-man. He would have been half of what he was without him covering and being a force on odd-man rushes.

Good points

I agree with everything under what’s going right. Good stuff.

I think Brashear has been bad. Not that I expected all that much but in limited ice time he stands out for all the wrong reasons. And his fights have been hug-fests.

Kotalik’s play has been bi-polar. Great on the power play and lacking at even strength. 13 of 17 points have come on the power play. Only 4 points at even strength and his +/- is awful. Leads the team at -8.

I see what you’re saying about Gilroy but I find it hard to be disappointed with his play. I think we would all like to see him post a few more points on the board. He certainly does need to do more with his Power Play time. But I think he’s been one of the most consistent defensively. He’s not physical but he’s been good defensively. A few rookie gaffs maybe but he has the best +/- of the Ranger D (one of only 2 with a + rating).

I would also like to see Staal paired with Gilroy.

by J76 on Nov 17, 2009 10:35 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Agreed on almost all of your points

Brashear is pretty useless out there. I always thought he was pretty bad when not fighting but he’s even worse than I remember.

I like what Gilroy has brought. He’s learning to be better defensively which is good. I think soon he merges the two parts of his game.

Was Kotalik considered a defensive mess back in his days with Buffalo?

good stuff

i really think that if the play of girardi and dubi pick up one of them will get traded by the deadline (hopefully with rosival or redden)…I think dubi is way too inconsistent and girardi i think you can get a pretty good hard hitting d-man for…but we’ll see…the rangers are in need of a jolt because they are somewhat lifeless now

Lundqvist, compared to last year, has a slightly higher S% and is facing a lot more quality chances under this offense-first system. We are all in for an unpleasant surprise when Lundqvist hits his inevitable slump; when teams start finishing all those breakaways they get, we’re gonna realize just how sharp Qvist has been to this point. Sorry if I am repeating myself, I just think he’s been great, and I was surprised to find out that most people don’t agree with that.

by XLII on Nov 17, 2009 11:15 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I’ve always thought of him as a streaky goaltender, consistent a majority of the time, and then he will go on a tear where he is unbeatable, just haven’t seen the tear yet.

You make an excellent point about more quality scoring chances.

Next 5 games

Minus this Washington game tonight, the Rangers are facing 4 very beatable teams. If they can rip 4 of the next 5 they will be in good shape.

4) Rick Dipietro instead of Dany Heatley or Marian Gaborik (By the way how is he doing)
5) You’re moving to Kansas City
6) Your owner admitted that he would never buy the team if he ad the chance again
7) God so many more but I don’t have time for you.

I really agree that the D pairs need to be mixed up. I think overall our Dmen are better balanced than we are giving them credit for. With the right pairings this balance can be given a chance to shine. The only Dman im dissatisfied with this year is Rosi. Redden has improved his play. Domo arigato mr del zotto. Gilroy hasnt been producing as much as expected but hes a rook and his d play has been better than expected. I think staal and girardi havent been on form but Ive been pleased with Girardis shot blocking. Staal has just been trying to do too much. He needs to get back to his game.

by jigblahdah on Nov 17, 2009 1:19 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

You know, the Islanders as an organization do not garner much repsect. They are pretty much the laughing stock of the league sans the Maple Leafs, for IDK, the past 15 years? If not for a 4yr cup run, they would have been contracted out of the league before 1990. So really, lets not kid ourselves, there is no comparison of these franchises as far as tradition and classiness go. Your never going to hear about the Rangers possbily moving……let alone to Kansas City. What a joke. Good riddens islanderboy

by earthworm on Nov 17, 2009 1:21 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

To tell you the truth, I don’t know why you put Gilroy as a negative. He’s been solid in his own end, which is all you can ask for of a rookie defenseman. Sure, some more offense would be nice, but it’s not like the Rangers defense is lacking scoring (leads the NHL with 13 goals).

by Dave (BSB) on Nov 17, 2009 1:21 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

He’s been ok in his own end. Like I said, I just think Staal and Gilroy are being asked to do things that are not what they are suited for.

I’d rather have Gilroy play solid defense now and let the offense come after a comfort level is established than let him try and force it. We’ve seen what happens when it’s forced (Staal).

by Dave (BSB) on Nov 17, 2009 1:34 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Gilroy

Leads the defense in Corsi Rating. Whereas Staal would be last, if not for Rozi who is just god awful.

On what's been going Wrong.

I know that this has less to do with the Rangers themselves but the officiating has been shitty at times in regards to the Rangers. I can think of a few times where the officials have killed the Rangers momentum or robbed them of a chance.
For example the Atlanta game when Del Zotto got called for a dive. Bad call. A five on three could have easily evened that game.
I mean most teams can say that but I to have it happen at really pivotal times during the games the Rangers have to hating the officials sometimes.

Rule #1. Cardio. Rule #2 Double Tap.

by CTRangersFan on Nov 17, 2009 2:02 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Unexpected Surprises:
Michael DelZotto – after some horribly weak defensive play in the early games, has become much more attuned to the speed of the NHL game and more responsible in his own end. And of course his simply shocking passing ability tied in with his overall ability to see the play develop.

Vinny Prospal – I suspected that Torts would go after him as soon as the TBL buyout was announced. And got trashed for it (on other boards). Best $1.1mm Sather ever spent.

Enver Lisin – I had no great hopes for this kid – deep down I was expecting “Zherdev II – Disappearance Returns”. Instead, we’ve got a guy with a lot of potential who seems to give it all (or at least 90%) when he’s on the ice – isn’t afraid to take or give the body, and can pass and skate.

Brian Boyle – I can see him getting more ice time with the current injuries. Faster on his skates than expected. Started out winning all the face-offs, now can’t buy one. Put his big body in front of the net and create havoc on power plays, please.

Unexpected DIsappointments (but the jury is still out):
Chris Higgins – might be finding his game now – didn’t expect that he’d need to find it.
Chris Drury – I’m not as down on him as others – but it’s definitely disappointing that he’s not scoring.
Sean Avery – wherefore art thou?? Will we see the Sean of Ottawa regularly now?? I hope so – he’s needed and missed.
Ryan Callahan – like Higgins – doing lots right, but not scoring – even when staring at an empty net. C’mon man!!
Donald Brashear – probably due to injury – whether it was concussion or hand – but he’s been a total non-factor. And he NEEDS to be a factor – otherwise he’s wasting (cap) space.
Wade Redden – hasn’t stepped up as I thought he would under this system. Dreadful at times, competent the rest. Meh.
Michal Rozsival – ugh. Bad start – really really bad. Settled down – but still not performing as he should.

As expected:
Marian Gaborik – what a joy to watch. Hope he can stay healthy.
Ales Kotalik – not lined up with Drury – which I expected. Big part of the success of the Power Play.
Artem Anisimov – learning what it takes to play at this level, and still contributing, although we should expect a bit more from him.
Matt Gilroy – same as Artie
Marc Staal – trying to do too much, and not doing anything “great”. Maybe in the last couple of days Torts has also figured this out (although given Redden more ice-time scares the bejeezus out of me….)
Dan Girardi – same as above.
Steve Valiquette – one bad game. Will still see plenty of time in goal and needs to be ready.
King Henrik Lundqvist – flashes of brilliance and shadows of mediocrity. Overall about where you’d think – needs to stay sharp – and healthy.

Please! Make it go away!!:
Aaron Voros – I had high hopes for this guy – on a personal level he’s likable and all, but since about game 5 have essentially given up. An excess of lazy/stupid penalties (tell me you don’t expect the whistle and raised arm every time he’s on the ice ??), bah ! Why go on? He’s fine for 6 minutes when everybody else needs a blow – IF he can stay out of the box.

Coaching Staff: Mixed bag. We don’t know what goes on in the locker room or in meetings – but as others have mentioned, this team does not seem to exude the passion and fire their coach does. Perhaps the fear of riding pine for a mistake tempers their enthusiasm. Where’s the 7th d-man ?? I think that’s part of the problem that they should have solved already.

The Rangers forwards are an improvement over last year – the hockey is more exciting to watch and you can see the tons of potential.

While the defense is also improved from an offensive standpoint – they are not improved in all other aspects. Some of this may be pairings and expected responsibilities, but they are not tough/gritty/mean enough in their own end. And with the current personnel, that’s not going to change much. This is the “missing link” as far as I’m concerned – exhibited in the lack of retribution when Hank gets tanked. Staal has the balls to do it – but he’s holding back, I suspect, because he knows that if he gets penalized they’re in a world of hurt.

Sorry for the lack of brevity – got on a roll and couldn’t stop….
