Rangers Analysis: When do we start blaming Tortorella?

A 7-1 start masks a lot of problems. I'm not going to mention any of them because they deserve a post to themselves but something does need to be addressed. The Rangers are 4-8-1 in their last 13 games, an abysmal record considering they lost to the likes of the Islanders and the Wild.

There are very few people who are safe from blame right now. Marian Gaborik, Henrik Lundqvist, Vaclav Prospal, Michael Del Zotto and Ales Kotalik are all okay in my book as of right now. I am not going to get into the failures, you know their names you know their problems.

But when do we as Ranger fans start pointing the finger of blame at John Tortorella? When do we turn our ever whithering gaze on the man who, in my opinion, is just as responsible as the players on the ice. The supposed "reign of terror" that Tortorella is known for is nowhere to be seen. And aside from the select few players mentioned before the New York Rangers are sliding back into that ever familiar "we can care less" attitude. Let's just take a look at some of the things Tortorella is turning a blind eye to.

Where is that fiery "I'll throw your ass onto the bench" attitude Tortorella was supposedly going to bring to the team? Aside from benching Brandon Dubinsky and Chris Higgins during the Montreal game Tortorella's fire has been quelled. And it shows. Players are taking lazy penalties in the offensive zone, they are not hustling back on defense and players are simply abandoning each other when things get physical. Where is the fire John? Where is the anger? Where is holding players accountable?

More after the jump.

Star-divide

What about the defensive pairings? Marc Staal is seeing one of the roughest patches of his career being paired up with Dan Girardi, and for that matter Girardi doesn't look great either. So why keep them together? This is nothing new, this is not surprising news in fact its been like this most of the season. Rozsival and Gilroy have looked bad and Del Zotto and Wade Redden haven't exactly been lighting it up either. So make some changes, do your job as a coach.

And what about last night? Why were Redden and Rozsival on the ice during the final minutes of the game. If John Tortorella has been watching just half the games he should know that Redden and Rozsival are the last choices to score a clutch goal. I know this, you know this but why doesn't Tortorella know this?

The last problem I am seeing and probably the biggest is Tortorella "sticking with the hand he is dealt." Obviously the current team is not working out, obviously we need some defensive help, why not call someone up. Corey Locke is tearing it up in the AHL and Evgeny Grachev seems to be finding his game as well. Give one of them a call up, move Higgins back to the wing, and give the third line a real center. This would benefit the Rangers in many ways including seeing less of Aaron Voros and Donald Brashear

Just a little quote to prove my point, this is from Steve Zipay's recap last night:

John Tortorella said last night that Matt Gilroy should have prevented game-winner by taking penalty.  Great. This after he's been scolding players fro weeks on late-game penalties.

You can probably see where I have a problem with this. Matt Gilroy is the last guy you need to point out for yesterday's game. Maybe Tortorella should have mentioned Redden trying to swat at the puck instead of coming back to make sure that the semi-breakaway never happens. Not to mention that Gilroy came all the way over from the other point to catch up to him. Plus this might just be me but that's one I want Lundqvist to stop, he stayed pretty deep in his crease and I am not sure why.

So where is the coach that can pull a team out of a tale spin? Where is the coach that we all put our trust in to deal with situations like this? Where is John Tortorella ripping this team a new one, and let's be honest some of them deserve it. I don't see him, do you?

Agree

Its so frustrating to watch a team every night when they don’t even look like they care. I mean theirs no energy in this team besides Gabby, Prospal, Kotalik, and Lundqvist. Even Del Zotto has dropped off lately. Yeah I want to see Tortorella get pissed off just like he did when we played New Jersey early in the season and turned the game around. We need that type of coach every single game in and game out. Also in addition to that I want some of the players to get mad too, when Roszival makes a boneheaded play and leaves Lundqvist to hang out and dry, I want to see Hank flip shit and lay it into Roszival. To me thats what this team needs. also if Avery wont play like the Avery we know get rid of him and play PA Parenteau hes looking really good right now and has a much better chance of scoring.

He's never been good at ES

He’s done his job on the PP, which was the primary reason to bring him in. If anything, it’s another reason to blame Tortorella…Kotalik gets way too much ES ice time.

Yea I wouldn’t exactly lump Kotalik in with Gabork and Prospal as positives of the current Rangers situation. He’s a useless even strength player and brings almost nothing to the table besides his powerful and erratic shot from the point, and his skill that becomes useful at the 65:01 marks of games.

Not a feasible option. There are two dangers:

1) Ruining all credibility with the union by waiving a “big signing”
2) When he is re-called…and he will be…some team is going to jump on him for $2.5 million, leaving the Rangers screwed.

You have to remember that hockey is more a business than a game, as disturbing as that sounds. Rozsival has been terrible, but the Rangers aren’t going to dump him like that.

Is this such a surprise?

Parenteau has good hands but he is not a very good skater by any means. He can play a north to south game, but lacks versatility and durability. Plus he is a defensive liability. He can chip in a few, but we don’t need another undersized forward. What use are his hands if he wont have the puck on his stick most times. This teams looks confused and lacks identity. I’m definitely disappointed in Torts not being seemingly tougher on this team and refusing to call up a 7th dman, but this team is not built in his image. We have some guys who can def play the system, but there is a serious lack of mental toughness it seems, and refined talent. Aside from MDZ, Prospal, and Gaborik, how many pucks are being passed tape to tape? Same thing happened with renney’s system. the Rangers refused to play it and decided to takes chances. Guess what… they failed. So Sather hired a coach to play that style and they still can’t grasp it. We don’t even know what we have in Dubinsky yet. Cali is struggling. Higgins is struggling. Kotalik is a waste aside from the PP. Anisimov and Lisin need to continue to develop. Staal and Girardi are confused out there. Rozi is a tortise. Redden is waste of money for what he brings. A team has to be built around a coach and this team is far from it. Besides, they played some terrible hockey the last few games of that 7 game win streak. It’s just aggravating that Devils and Islanders are playing well right now with the players they have.

by motherpucker on Nov 18, 2009 12:02 PM EST reply actions

I’m personally tired of the line scrambling. If you want to build chemistry then leave the guys on the same line for more than a shift at a time. It seems like everytime Torts doesn’t get immediate results he shuffles the lines again. Put lines together and then leave them that way. See how they do over a game or two. If its not working then shuffle a few players around. But he can’t expect to get anything out of the lines till he stops juggling players.

It just drives me nuts. Every other shift someone new is on the line with Prospal and Gaborik. Its enough to make my head spin. I can’ t imagine how hard it is to adjust as a player.

Little too early to look at Torts...

I know coaches may have gotten canned for less, but we need to realize how big of parts Drury and Dubi are. These are 2 of the team’s top centers, so its not like its just 2 small players that are out.

I think you gotta give it another month before we look at Torts and if he’s the problem.

Even then, before the new year rolls around, as long as they are in those top 8 spots, it really doesn’t matter to me. They can make a run (and other teams can drop) within a couple weeks.

I do agree that their play the past few weeks has pretty much sucked.

by kiop900 on Nov 18, 2009 1:02 PM EST reply actions

This is just my opinion

But I think during every break, every practice, Lundqvist should work on high glove saves with Allaire. Do ’em until he stops 9/10. Better yet, 19/20. It seems the high glove lets in every goal right now, and that might be affecting his confidence. I know Lundqvist can get 40+ wins every year. Players realize this hole, and they all fire there. The recent examples are Kovy doing it on his return, Bradley doing it on the breakaway. Work on it alot.

And yes. Torts gets the blame.

However, think of this. Torts was hired by the Lightning midway through the 00-01 season. There was no immediate impact. They even won 3 in 21 games at one point… and, well, we all know what the Lightning did in 04.

So… should we be expecting this type of play?

I’ll ask that, but I’ll give my own answer to it: Not At All.

The team Torts took over in Tampa wasn’t a playoff team. This team is. 4 straight seasons, and I’m not going to stop counting. Torts gets the blame because I think he is panicking. Switch the defensive combinations, try different break outs during practice. Have a get up the ice line, a dump the puck line, a crash the net line, just think of things to get the players on their feet. Right now they’re all sitting down.

Kovalchuk had all day to line up that shot. You can’t pin that on Hank.

Nor can you pin a breakaway on Hank.

Both are on the defense. Not Hank. The one that’s on Hank? Backstrom. That was low glove btw.

The Buck Stops with Tortorella

If present trends continue, the Rangers have little chance of making the playoffs. Tortorella’s system is not working. And you cannot blame it on the injuries to Drury and Dubinski who were playing poorly as well. The players are underperforming both offensively and defensively. Many of the players are new to the Rangers this year and have not developed chemistry together. Many seem to be confused about what is expected of them and what role they should play. Tortorella is constantly shaking up the lines and hoping that some chemistry will happen. It hasn’t…except for Gaborik and Prospal. The Rangers display all the hallmarks of a poorly coached team. Maybe Tortorella is not the right person for the job.

by snark38 on Nov 18, 2009 1:53 PM EST reply actions

I disagree that Tortorella's system isnt working. It is

but the players are killing themselvs with penalties and lazy play. Torts needs to put a stop to this.

Lots of interesting comments… my thoughts…

I think Torts can be an effective coach. Rangers are in a position were they are locked into some salaries and I don’t see them making any major changes with the exception of bringing guys up from Hartford. Torts plays one system and it just may not work for this team. Can he make this group of guys a winning team? I think we have more then enough talent to be a top 4 playoff team (not struggling for 8th). I’m just not sure that he is the guy to do it.

Three guys are playing better then expected. Some are playing as expected. Most are playing well below expectations. It’s coaching that has to make them play up to their potential.

I don’t see how you blame Gilroy for that goal? Is Redden’s confidence so bad you have to protect it or does he really believe this????

I’m not sure why he torts the offense so much but has left the D pairings the way they are?

One example that comes to mind… Avery seems to be playing better the last few games. On several shifts I’ve noticed him fight both in the corners and the behind the other teams net. He comes out with a blind pass in front of the net with no one there. This isn’t a great play… but it is how Avery plays. If you pair him with someone who anticipates this it could be a threat… When you have guys play together you start to learn what the other player is going to do in certain circumstances.

Higgens seems to be doing ok at center (considering experience and minus face-offs)… will he be given a line to work with or will players roll onto the ice like yahtzee dice?

by CTrangerfan on Nov 18, 2009 1:57 PM EST reply actions

I think the major problem is that the team just doesn’t play at times. Perfect example last night when they came out really strong against the Caps. They were playing the game that Torts wanted to them to play. It was working pretty well and Gaborik got us the early lead. The Caps were on their heels. Then all of the sudden the play that was so effective start just dissappeared.

When the team is aggressive and constantly getting in passing lanes. When the team is controlling the puck. When the team is putting serious pressure on the opposition it is John Torturella’s team. When they suddenly stop doing all that they are not his team. Torts needs to figure out a way to keep that type of play up. When they play that way I can’t see why they can’t be in competition for top 4 in the league.

I don’t know how to fix the inconsistency I’ve seen, but I sure as hell hope Torts does.

I picked a name very similar to yours… my apologies…

I think bad penalties are killing us… probably our biggest problem

We did look brilliant last night up until Gabby scored. But all of our lines didn’t look great and I’m not sure all the players play well with torts system. We’re not in any position to make big personnel changes.

If the system is right or wrong Torts is the one who has to make the talent we have win. I haven’t given up hope and think we have enough talent. I just think he’s got to motivate the guys and play to their strengths. You can’t turn ostriches into swans.

I think he’s trying to motivate players and get them out of their slumps… but the team definitely needs some juice.

game play as a whole

Seeing this team play, they swarm the puck, I was at the recent game vs Ottawa, there were so many times when all the forwards were behind the goal line and a dman was pinching, Ottawa got the puck and went in on an odd man rush. Theres rarely someone in front of the net and I think they could be putting a lot more pucks in the net if theyd actually set someone up in front. It seems like Torts wants a dman to pinch every time in the offensive zone and they put the one dman back in a very tough spot. Giving up that many 2-1s or 3-1s, a few of them are gonna result in goals for the other team. I’ve played hockey but I’m not a coach and I see this stuff and it really doesn’t seem like good hockey.

by Casino16 on Nov 18, 2009 2:38 PM EST reply actions

addition

maybe the odd man rushes are a result of the lack of hustle and backchecking.

unfortunately we never can.

unless torts is given better players, we have to blame sather. sure he traded gomez but come on. he doesnt recieve a free pass because of it. redden is mediocre, drury has turned into shannahan minus the scoring plus a step in speed. roszival is the worst defensemen in the league and i totally disagree with whoever stated that if rozy is called back up from being sent down a team will be all over him at 2.5. Torts needs better premier players to play his style plain and simple.

D-Pairings

Yes, it is still a mystery to me as to why the defensive pairings have not ben changed yet. Torts is always ready to jumble up the offense, so why not try the same approach with the D, who really need it?

the truth is were not holding bad players accountable.

and yeah id change of the defensive pairs.

stall and gilroy should be together and redden and girardi should be together. at this point i really wish we had semenov. it would do such a great thing for this team to sit redden or rozi after a game like last night. if we had that 7th dman redden wouldnt play the next game because of the play.

and brashear has to be one of the worst signings.. he doesnt hit anyone. his fights are boring and unconclusive for the most part.. and hes a liability when hes on the ice. same with voros. we need that grit i guess but i much rather have a 4th line who can actually play.

its time to bring up locke. give him a shot with the big club. and keep parenteau up this time.

and if we didnt have this shortage of centers id say i would love to see anisimov with gaborik and prospal, but thats wont happen till drury and dubi are back.

Don't Blame Torts ...

The only common thread through years of mediocrity, poor hustle and soft non-physical ranger teams is Sather. It’s time for him to go. Trouble is Dolan will never make that move. I think Torts is hinting at this with his “play the hand I’m delt” comments WRT the players performance. It should send shockwaves through an organization when no player comes to the defense of Hank as he continues to get run over, and Ryan Callahan has to answer the bell for himself. Brashear is yet another in a long line of Slather’s obvious senility. Please bring back the pride in Ranger Blue!

I don’t know who to blame, coaches or the players. I’ve noticed The team is usually out of position on some facets of the game, like outlet passes out of the zone, other teams pass tape to tape, I find it that the rangers have a hard time doing this. Also I feel as if their is a lack of communication by the players that can and will result in situations like my previous statement. I wonder if management can listen to us or read our blog and comments about bringing up players. I mean do we really need voros? no he plays like ass. I understand that we are missing key guys but that shouldn’t be an excuse. Many is the time where rosival makes a stupid play and it makes me wonder why he is in the NHL, trade him even if you get little for him. Sangs is a good defense men who scores and plays a physical game. but who am I but just a lolly fan, I don’t call the shots

Save by Richter!

by spartan12 on Nov 18, 2009 5:03 PM EST reply actions

I agree

I don’t know who to blame. As a whole I think everyone is accountable for what’s going on right now. Torts needs to stop shuffling the lines and players needs to stop getting lazy. I remember innthe begining of the season when we were off to a hot streak all we can talk about is how good our conditioning is Now we look lazy in out own zone no helping out when someone gets into a scuffle with an exception of one game when gaborik got into it with Someone in between line changes. ( forgot wat game it was the one where Avery ripped that Guys stick out his hand from his own bench after being poked, forgot which game) but that’s besides the point. But I can see how some may want the fire of torts to come out and bench people like he did to dubs and higgy but you can do that every night, you Lose players like that. Especially if you lose the game after a benching than benching someone comes ino question. Personally on a serious note I think we have to really re think everyone expectations. For years now we’ve had the same prob with dubi not enough production besides the rookie year with jäger. Cally was on my shit list until he started putting up more points las year and as far as staal goes I mean he’s a shut down defender. That’s it he needs to stop handling he puck as much because he turns it over in the neutral zone 5 out of 6 times. I really think that’s why he is having a not as good year ( indont want to say bad yet) I mean point blank I really think we need more offense first than hussle. Cally is good but he scored 24 25 goals last year on a team that almost counted on naslund and him to score every night. And this year we expect 30 goals. I’ll tell you one thing it is sure a hell of a lot easier to score when you are one of the few a teams looks to to produce. I’ve been on hockey teams where everone sucks and passes you the puck to net it eveytime.. Evenually you will net a couple. He is a gritty player that can net a couple. I don’t know about 30 year in and out. And for dubi he has all the skill and hands to get he job done but he just can’t be consisant. So overall I just think pesonal wise as of what i see now I think we just need more than offense. I’m tellin you detroit won a cup and got to the finals two years in a row with a struggling osgood. Offensive personal can go a long ways.

There is no blame to place here. The puck has to start rolling their way and its not right now. They are in a miserable spin but they will climb out of it. But even if they do, they are finishing in the same place they did last year until some real help arrives.

TOO QUICK OF A JUDGMENT, GUYS

Look, we all said coming in that we were excited about this season. But if you remember, we all (pretty much all of us) said that we are expecting an up and down first half of this season. As a matter of fact a lot of people were expecting no better than a .500 first half of the season. And that’s where we’re headed. Patience young grasshopper. Not only is this the first quarter of the first full season with Tortorella, but it’s THE FIRST SEASON with Tortorella!!! Relax!!! How many coaches experience extreme success their first year behind the bench of a new team?? We have budding players like Grachev, Anisimov, MDZ, Gilroy, Lisin, Boyle that will not fulfill their true contributions for a few years yet. Not to mention guys like Dubie, Callahan, Girardi and Staal are still very young though it seems they are vets (but they aren’t). These 4 guys average age is still only 23.

Let’s actually take a look up and down the lineup and determine who is really in their prime??? Henrik and Gabby. That’s about it. If you want you can throw in Roscy, Avery and Kotalik. Everyone else is either way before their prime (names mentioned above), or past it (Drury, Redden, Brash, Prospal).

Look what you’re expecting from them after the first quarter of a season!!!! This team experienced basically a complete overhaul on offense, with only drury, callahan, and dubie remaining on the top 3 lines. That’s a lot of chemistry to be formed in a short period of time. Not only that, but it’s a system that is almost completely opposite from that of the last 4 years. So take it easy. Change doesn’t happen overnight.

So I ask this question. Why do we need to post BLAME? The pens core has been together for 3+ years. Detroit much longer. Caps core is around 3 years (ovech, semin, green, backstrom). This Rangers team? 21 games. There is No BLAME. Yet…..

but Tortorella could be doing alot more. I expect a shitload from this team, and we should get it. Especially with the ticket prices and the ammount we spend

Not sure who to blame? I'll tell ya's

Honestly, I blame just about everyone from the top down. Torts, no fire, appears to be taking naps during periods. Just look at what happened with Drury, our captian, he almost gets knocked out with the cheap shot and not a peep out of torts for retribution or a call during the game. What about hank getting run over how many games? What about putting Vally in net against san jose? You know it was after that one game ( a huge mistake imo) that this team fell completely apart because their leadership failed the team.

Sather, just bad contracts that ruin/overide/burden all the good ones he does manage to make. This guy needs to go. Yeah he’s great and holding out for contract/profit dough but he gives everything he saves back in mistakes and then some.

I also don’t like the attitude of a lot of the players. For example, Dubi got pushed in the warmups in his last game and didn’t say a fucking thing. He just stood there. OK, Lets just let them push us around even bofore the game starts. I also think last years problems have returned to haunt us, these guys spend way too much time enjoying NYC and not enough of playing good tough gritty in your face hockey. And you all can say what you want about Hank, but I think his game has suffered big time compared to last year. I honestly don’t think he’s in the right frame of mind (like many others) if he’s driving his lamboghini to practices. When I learned about torts I expected a living bootcamp throughout this entire season. That is certainly is not what I am seeing now. IN conclusion, if Voros is the only guy willing to fight just for icetime than we are in a lot of trouble my friends. A lot of trouble.

You know..

As bad as Voros is I have to give him a lot of credit for mixing it up and sticking up for his teammates. Even when he gets his ass kicked all over the ice he still keeps his head high and throws down again and again. That says a lot to me.

i remember when we got higgins montreal fans said.

“he says all the right things and will get chances but wont connect on them because all he cares about is his city life”

thats kinda acccurate right now.

and yeah torts needs to put some fire under these guys asses.

like when he was benching rozi for terrible games. time to keep doing that. we should bring up sangs and bench redden for that mistake in his last game.

LET'S GO RANGERS!!!

No one. Waiving him is a huge risk too.

I'd take that risk ...

if slats/torts said; “look we’re rebuilding and giving the youth a chance”, I could still buy tickets knowing I’ll see youth, excitment and effort. Granted there will be some stall-like growing pains. Personally I don’t mind him trying to rush the puck. It’s better than constantly seeing rozi’s back, or redden diving into hank after every opposition goal. I’ll accept youthful physical mistakes, but not lacadasical effort. Do the rangers even know they need to clear the font of the net on rebounds? Let hank play the puck, put someone on their arse for a change – oh wait, that’s right – we all agreed they’re too soft. Take a poke at brodeur or gigere and see what happens.
