Blueshirts are the Pitts: Crosby and Pens crush Rangers, 8-3

After giving up 13 goals in two nights to the Lightning and Penguins, the Rangers are long on questions and short on answers.  Very little is working for this team right now, and their coach, for all his tough talk and arrogance seems to have absolutely no clue what to do about it.

The Good Ship Tortorella is sinking Ranger fans, and the Skipper seems powerless and/or unable to stop it. The water is coming up over the bow, and most of the team is bailing with Dixie cups.

They still aren't playing hard for 60 minutes, they still aren't getting scoring from forwards not named Gaborik or Prospal, and they are still making far too many defensive mistakes to be considered even a mediocre hockey team.

Plenty of excuses, no answers.

On to the recap, although I can't fathom how anyone would even want to read this, because I didn't even want to write it.

Recap after the jump.......

Star-divide

The Rangers drew first blood on a beautiful backhand goal by Marc Staal, but after that the Penguins came roaring back, with three goals in a span of less than four minutes, and by the end of the night, Sidney Crosby had a hat trick, and the Pens had a 8-3 victory at the Igloo in Pittsburgh. Evgeni Malkin, Maxim Talbot, Tyler Kennedy, and former Ranger Pascal Dupuis also scored for the Pens.

The Rangers flirted with attempts to make a game out of it, but the Penguins had an answer every time. After Matt Gilroy made it 3-2 with a goal with five minutes left in the second, Mark Eaton scored a goal as time expired in the second period. A review of the goal showed that it crossed the goal line with 0.4 seconds remaining in the second.

The Rangers answered quickly in the third, with Michael Rozsival scoring his first goal of the season just thirty three seconds into the period. It ended a long scoring drought for Rozsival, who hadn't scored in 42 games. But again, the Penguins came back fast, came back harder, and put the game away for good.

The luckiest Ranger of the night? Enver Lisin, who was dressed and on the bench, but didn't get on the ice once. MSG announcers talked about Lisin "being taught a lesson" by head coach John Tortorella. Yeah, you sure showed him Torts.

Final Thoughts:

  • Michael Del Zotto had an especially tough night, finishing -5 for the evening. Can't say I can ever recall a defensemen having a +/- that bad.
  • Defensive breakdowns notwithstanding, Stephen Valiquette was awful in this game, just flat out awful. He is making it harder and harder for the Rangers to give Henrik Lundqvist nights off.
  • I almost feel bad for Christopher Higgins, I really do. He's doing all the little things, and getting plenty of chances, the puck just refuses to go in the net for him.
  • Donald Brashear had a power play shift in this game.......I'll just let that sink in.
  • Chris Drury had a terrible night as well: -2, a woeful 1 for 6 on defensive zone face-offs, and 6 for 14 on face-offs overall. Boys and girls, if he isn't winning face-offs, he is of no use to the Rangers.
  • I think Artem Anisimov has earned more playing time. Put him on the first line, and see what happens. What is the worst that could happen, the Rangers lose?
  • Towards the end of the MSG telecast, John Giannone said the Rangers would be an "angry team" on Monday night for the rematch with the Penguins. I want John to tell me what Ranger team he is watching, because the one I'm watching doesn't get angry.

I think you forgot to mention

how crosby had a hat-trick on hat night of all things. So we had to sit threw like 10 minutes of them celebrating our awful loss.

Maybe Torts should bench himself in the locker room for the next game?

What is there left to say here about our Rangers?

This team is in a complete tailspin and cant see anything that tells me were starting to come out of it. When do you get to the point where the players get sick of losing? When do you get to the point where your tired of walking off the ice after not picking up 2 extremely valuable points? Rangers are dying and they are taking theyre fans with them. It is becoming very difficult to sit there and have to endure 60 minutes of garbage hockey every other night. But I will and do you know why? Cuz I am a diehard fan just like the rest of the guys out here on BB. But we have NOTHING to be happy about. We have nothing to cheer for or get loud about. Honestly I keep watching to see if Gaborik scores again to keep the league lead. Pretty sad………….no? What happened to the team that started the season 7-1? THAT was a long time ago boys, a real long time ago. Sorry to be so negative here guys but im just very frustrated w/ this team. I love this team and it really affects me after all these losses keep piling up and I know im not the onl 1 out here too so whatsup boys who’s feeling my pain?

Not a Pitt fan – sorry to come off as one. Just aggravated about this time as much as you are, and I don’t want people to spare words about their bad performances.

I don’t care if you lose, just lose TRYING. I want them to wear the uniform with some pride is all.

Me too

I think we’re all feeling the exact same pain, hence the critical comments. I like to see it though as it shows we love our franchise thru thick and thin unike other NHL cities and we aren’t afraid to call it as we see it. I thought I was the only one watching to see if Gabby can keep the scoring lead as I see not much else to keep excited about unfortunately….I was afraid a blowout like this was coming after the effort in TB and the Pens loss on the island….where do we go from here? MSG on Monday night has the potential to turn very ugly if the effort yields similar results. Oh yes one more thing, Vally was absolutely burtal last night in spite of everything else, always thought he was competent so as to give Hank a night off here and there but after his performance last night, what can be said?

giantsNYrangers fan..I could not agree with anymore and feel the same way. The issue is with the Owner not doing anything to puch the GM Glen Sather. The team on the ice is a product of their bad decisions. We have some nice young players but we need leadership,( Drury is not a leader sorry) toughness, veteran D. It is the same story every year and until Sather is gone we wil be the same team. Sucks..my favorite sport and team…

ARE ANY OF US SUPRISED THAT WATCH THE RANGERS RELIGIOUSLY

The reason I joined this site is to help me deal with my anger issue when watching this organization for the last ten years. This game played out exactly how I thought it was. watching the rangers this season I just looked at a team that progressively is getting worse with each game. San Jose game we had a 2-0 lead and we were firing on all cylinders then John Tortarella feels his 4th line needs ice time against the other team and Donald Brashear makes a horrible pass that leads to San Jose’s 1st goal. Our 1st loss in seven games should be no big deal right? Well it’s the way our defense looked in that game that has carried over for this long stretch that has gotten worse with each game. If our team has a lead it isn’t long before the other team is back in the game if the other team has a lead it’s difficult for our team to generate any offense. We aren’t getting any points in these games and we absolutely wasted our great start and look like we are not a playoff team by any stretch. We all saw the defense tonight and how many quality scoring chances Pittsburgh generated just by going to the net. Our players look like 4 year old kids following the puck and not picking up anyone trailing coming in our end. We take needless offensive zone penalties that have nothing to do with preventing the other team from scoring and we stand around in our end watching the other team plant themselves in the slot with not a ranger in sight. We are not physical, we don’t score, we spend way to much time in our end of the ice leaving our goalies to make countless point blank saves. The softness of this team was again exposed tonight as you had Matt Cooke cream Anisimov in an already decided game with no one on the ice at the time of the hit to step up for him. This team is so fundamentally bad you wonder watching the game if there is any coaching taking place. These players have had all success at some level of hockey and many coaches. They all of a sudden don’t know how to play? I hate to say it but the last time I saw this kind of effort back to back we fired Roger Neilson during that dreaded 92-93 season. Say what you want about Tom Renney but his teams all made the playoffs and he brought respect back to this organization. John Tortarella has shown me very little and in fact had a team 3-1 up on Washington that collasped. You would think a coach of his caliber would of started to fix these glaring defensive zone coverage errors by now. You can’t blame this all on Redden and Rosival either the whole team looks lost. It’s not their fault they were offered the money they were and Brashear can be thrown in the same boat. I feel we have capable players to at least make the play-offs but I’m starting to question whether John Tortarella can take us there.

I thought the 7 1/2 minute PP at the end of the game was pretty sweet. How long is Avery’s suspension going to be? Is it a one or two, or longer? I thought Sang. looked good, and Staal looked amazing on the break in. Vally had a pretty good first, but it went downhill after that. I liked Cally stepping up for AA and fighting too. Great how he took of his helmet right off the bat too.

by WalkerNYRanger on Nov 28, 2009 11:59 PM EST reply actions

Cally is a stand up kid and is all heart.

He might not be scoring but he brings alot of intagibles to the table. Isnt it crazy how 4 being one of the smallest guys in the league he leads the whole league in hits?…….lol. That tells me 1 thing about him………………“HEART”.

by giantsNYrangers on Nov 29, 2009 12:08 AM EST up reply actions

crosby’s third goal. the power play one. cally was completely out of position. I love cally. But he left everyone out to dry. He came across the ice and bumped a player who was not going to receive the puck instead of playing the most dangerous player on the ice (besides Malkin). Needs to make a smarter play.

by Rangerguy on Nov 29, 2009 12:14 AM EST up reply actions

I agree Rangerguy he shoulda made a smarter play but you can say

that about almost every1 on the roster at one time or another really but the kid comes to play almost every night doesnt he? There’s a reason Torts gave him the “A” on his sweater. U agree or no?

by giantsNYrangers on Nov 29, 2009 12:21 AM EST up reply actions

of course, he has heart. I never disputed that. Like i said, I love what Cally brings to this team and was a huge fan when he was named alternate. The question is will he stay a 3rd line role player, or break through as the 2nd/ 1st line goal scorer we saw last year.

Dig deep to find the answer

I was at the game against the Lightning and it was just plain sad to watch. Tonights result was no surprise. This team has no heart but should we really be surprised? Drury, Rosey and Redden have big time contracts with basically no movement clauses and are advanced in age. What exactly do they have to play for? As long as they don’t get hurt life is good for them. As we already said none of them are gettting moved or sent down so they basically have free passes to do as little as possible without fear of punishment. These guys are supposed to be our leaders especially Mr. Drury. He is supposed to be Mr. big moment a real winner. After watching him play for us the last couple of years you could have fooled me. This is a major problem and we are going nowhere with these 3 on our team eating up about 18 million in cap space execept maybe some early round draft picks so we can at least be revelant again when they finally leave. Maybe we get lucky and these guys have some class and step aside like Nasuland did.

by B L S on Nov 29, 2009 1:02 AM EST reply actions

Yeah dont count on any of these guys pulling a Naslund and retiring at the end of

the year. Do you really see Redden leaving something like $18,000,000 plus on the table and walking away? Or Drury leaving something like $21,000,000+ on the table? No way Jose’. But it’s nice to dream though isnt it?

by giantsNYrangers on Nov 29, 2009 1:46 AM EST up reply actions

I'll be honest

Tortorella lost this game. I call a timeout when the Penguins score two in a row to make it 2-1.
Del Zotto and Girardi had HORRIBLE plays that allowed the second goal and then Tortorella put them out there right away against the same Penguin line, which scored.

Tortorella has a funny way of coaching, he does nothing. Good for you John. He doesn’t last the entire season, put it in the books, you heard it here first.

Who woulda thought Joe that Torts would be this ineffective?

I know I didnt. What a major dissappointment he turned out to be but I have to respectfully disagree with you this one bro. I dont think he gets the ax this year. I dont know but something tells me he has this yr and beyond. And really right now who is a beter option? It’s not like we have a bunch of proven stanley cup wining coaches waiting in the wings like the NHL version of a Bill Cowher or a Mike Shannahan. i just dont se it. But I would like to though. Torts seems a cofused as the rest of us.

by giantsNYrangers on Nov 29, 2009 1:25 AM EST up reply actions

just FYI torts isnt a “proven” stanley cup winner, he had St. Louis and Lecavlier before anyone really knew about them, along with khabibulin in net and dave andreychuk on the blue line, he rolled 3 lines every game which kept the pace up…also it was the first season after the lockout with the new rule changes so most defenseman were taking hooking penalties left and right that year, all torts did was adapt the new style with a team of very young players who used the two line pass a hell of alot better than most teams..after that year with all the retirings and whatnot, they were horrible and thats why he got the ax there…

i say if by the trade deadline he doesnt make any big/good deals, sather will cut him and we’ll do this all over again next year….

by LIrangersfan on Nov 29, 2009 2:23 AM EST up reply actions

I have to totally disagree w/ you here LI

How can you say that Torts is not a “proven” Stanley cup wining coach when he did just that? He took a young team that was not the most talented team to ever win a cup to a championship. and nobody thought for a second that they had a chance. They beat a very good Flyers team in 7 games in the conf finals and beat the flames in 7 games in the cup finals. they got contributions from alot of diff players that yr besides Vinny L and St. Louis. And btw the lockout was the following yr in 2004-2005 after they won the cup with the same pre-lockout rules. He was a very good motivator and had alot to do with them winning the cup that year. unfortunately for him and other coaches with his hard nosed style, they tend to wear out they’re welcome after awhile like a Mike Keenen but coaches like Torts are effective initially. And alot of his old players credit Torts for bringing out the best of they’re abilities as hockey players.

This one is on me, sorry fellas. I was a major jinx for this team tonight; every time I turned to the game the Pens scored. I tuned in past the midway mark of the 1st. Hey look the Rangers are winning- no sooner do I finish this thought and Malkin ties it up for the Pens. I sit through the two Penguin goals that immediately follow then turn off the TV in a huff. I turned back a little while later to see if Pitt had blown the game open, but to my surprise the Rangers have cut the deficit to one. This was with a minute left in the 2nd. 59.97 seconds later, Mark Eaton, are you serious? Fuck this, I’ll watch the ND/Stanford game. Twenty minutes later, jonesing for more pain, I switch back for a quick look. 4-3! This time I don’t even have time to think any pleasant thoughts, Crosby puts another one by Valiquette (Chad DosNueve anyone?) In all I watched less than 10 minutes of game time, witnessed five Penguin goals and no Ranger goals. My only saving grace is that I did not witness Cindy’s hat-trick. So like I said, this one is on me; every time the Rangers got some momentum, I managed to kill it.

by old hickory on Nov 29, 2009 1:55 AM EST reply actions

Now nobody is giving Torts ALL the blame here

but he does deserve the criticizm he is getting. There are alot of different factors here that play a role in where the Rangers are right now…..from Torts, to personnel, to the play on the ice. And obviously the players shoulder most of the blame here cuz it’s not like Torts is on the ice losing faceoffs or giving up the puck in the neutral zone. I dont know but I just expected more from him coming into this yr w/ his reputation as a no nosense type coach, to his resume w/ a Stanley Cup on it but mainly his lack of accountability bothers me the most. He talked a good game but has yet to deliver. And Sather too from his poor choices in free agents as well as other personnel descisions.

by giantsNYrangers on Nov 29, 2009 2:38 AM EST up reply actions

Not all the blame Hockory

but Tortorella deserves alot of it. Where is the fire mouth coach we all expected? Where is the coach who sits a player because he is playing bad? Tortorella benched Lisin last night? Lisin? Really? John is losing this team, plain and simple.

i was working and wasnt able to catch any of the game..i had the espn alerts though…after the first period..i didnt want to keep getting those text messages anymore…

torts cant take all the blame, but clearly theres a personnel problem, and i think it stems from voros(which i sound like a broken record, but hes even more terrible than last season, and thats saying something…) brashear and boyle, our 4th line isnt our energy line, they dont get the team pumped and its difficult to keep any momentum when you give everyone a chance and they arent performing up to their best…its really time to bring in people who can #1 put up points and #2 energize the team, not just with a fight, but a powerful forecheck that has other teams scared to pass the puck in the defensive zone, and keep it up instead of fluttering out half way into the period…

our defense needs to pick it up too..maybe we need to make a trade for a big name person who isnt going to play like shit once they come to the rangers(redden and morris)

by LIrangersfan on Nov 29, 2009 2:18 AM EST reply actions

Torts reminds me of my high school coach

He talks a talk about holding players who make mistakes accountable. And says that he’ll bench players who make mistakes, people mess up, come off the ice, he looks at them and says “you f*cked up, now get back out there and do it again.” Benching Lisin for the whole game when you had so many other players making mistakes left and right? Bench him for the first, and then hell, put him on D. He can’t do worse than -5. Someone in the locker room has to step up and take charge. It can be Brashear for all I care, but it seems its not going to be Drury or Torts. Wouldn’t surprise me if its Prospal, but someone has to put their foot down and change the teams attitude.

A big problem is that we have too many grinders. Having grinders on your team is fantastic. Any team in the league would kill to have a Callahan, Dubinsky, and maybe even Avery on their team.

However, these guys don’t belong on the first line (Higgins and Avery rotating 1st line. This shouldn’t be happening. If it wasn’t for Slats’ crappy contracts, we’d have another premium player to compliment Prospal and Gaborik).
Honestly, just think about that. Christopher Higgins is playing on our first line. With Marian Gaborik. Screw us, Screw us…

We sometimes have a top 3 line made entirely of grinders! Avery-Drury-Cally? How the hell is that line EVER supposed to score? Dru, Cally and Lisin isn’t any better.

The coming seasons should be better, when Gabz and Prospal (re-signed assuming Slats has a brain cell remaining) get a fast, skilled winger signed in the offseason to accompany them.
Also, Grachev will be called up and I think a Grachev, Anisimov, Lisin line could do serious damage.
Plus between our current rookies, Wolfpack players, and youth prospects, we have the best Defensive prospects in the entire league. In 3 years our blueline should be unstoppable.
Oh and Chad Johnson should replace Vally next season. I love le Spiderman, but I’m just not in the mood for his rebounds anymore.

Right now there’s a bunch of grinding players trying to play a fast paced, playmaking style. Just not gonna work.
Oh, and our defense is crap aside from Staal and Gilroy, but that’s for another post.

I’ve been watching him get blown out for a while now. He has a lot of troube seeing the puck on shots until it is too late. I seriously wonder if it has something to do with his vision not being up to pro levels. PLus he tends to freeze up and let them shoot like with crosby. Keep in mind, I can’t blame him for our loss last night, this is the also the second time torts put him in against not only one of the best teams in the leauge, but against the SC champs of all things. What in the sam hell is torts thinking???? Hank should have been in net last night. Quit fuckin pampering him torts. He does better after he loses games because he has the drive and heart to want to come back and win big. Although, is good as he is has has issues too right now.

Where's the D

Almost every Ranger on the ice is a defensive liability. Although all 3 Ranger goals were scored by defensemen, those same defensemen are terrible at defending. The Tortorella system is all wrong for this group of players. We simply do not have good defensive defensemen. The forwards have to do a better job at helping out with defensive responsibilities. Sather and Tortorella have assembled entirely the wrong group for Tortorella’s system to work. Tom Renney would have much more success coaching this group than Tortorella. Since it is almost impossible to make significant player personnel changes at this point, the only change that Sather can manage is to replace Tortorella.

by snark38 on Nov 29, 2009 9:27 AM EST reply actions

honestly, renny wouldnt know what to do…it would be the same thing, prospal and gaborik scoring all the goals and our d playing solid d..so it would be alot more overtime games and 1-0 games for or against us..i liked renny for a while, but he wore out his welcome last year when they couldnt win 2 games in a row cause of no scoring, this team wouldnt really be much different imo

by LIrangersfan on Nov 29, 2009 10:47 AM EST up reply actions

People with huge problems

sometimes really have to hit bottom before they can really pick themselves up and clean themselves off. Maybe it is our time to hit bottom and start over. Maybe Sather will retire or move on or let go so we can build on a new era. The signs are there for the possiblilty of a change in leadership with messier coming on board as an apprentice. Keep in mind, there is a lot of heat in that NYC kitchen when our boys in blue are losing big and getting blown out by teams like tampa. If we are losing again on monday night watch out for the fans to show some serious disatisfaction. And I can’t see Sather taking the heat for another full season of this because everything points up. They might even be calling his name on monday. This team is embarressment right now in many ways. Just read the messages and it is evident in every other fan’s message. We are drowning in losses and it could finally be the start of a major regime change. I know a lot of you don’t always agree with me but thats the way I see it.

by Toad McGee on Nov 29, 2009 9:55 AM EST reply actions

Won't be Torts

I’m pretty sure the MGMT will stick with their guy for at least a season. The first big change will be trading some of the players to mix it up. We’re 25% through the season and the team has not gelled together at all. Good start, but something happened and its becoming a disastrous. Expect Higgins to be gone in the next few weeks. Maybe Girardi. Hopefully, Dubi, Calli, Staal, MDZ, Gilroy are not on the chopping block.

If I were making the calls, I’d go youth and and sit some vets who aren’t performing:
Send down Rosi (once Redden is healthy) and leave Sanguinetti up.
Send down Voros and Boyle and call up Locke and Grachev.
Keep an extra forward (Lisin, P.A.P., Brashear, etc . . .) and give people a rest every now and again. EG- Drury looked really fresh against Tampa, but horrible last night against Pitt.

Also for those of you who defended Rozsival in the beginning

I think his tenure is also coming to an end. He is still (I don’t care that he scored a goal) horrible.

we need a veteran d man who can put such a hurting on the offense of the other team, that they wont want to go down his side, they’ll chip the puck in and he’ll take it over and get it out, i think del zotto would belong on a line with someone who can really teach him what to do and what not to do, cause redden and rosi are worse than the rookies so what are they learning?

early season venting.

hi guys, haven’t commented in a while, but i’m reading everyday, and its getting interesting over there at the FHL on yahoo.
its venting time.

here’s the problem i have as a fan. no one likes to watch their team lose. but there’s a difference between a losing team and a team that doesn’t care. the latter is more difficult to watch and root for. during the last 8 games or so, maybe since drury and dubi got hurt, the team has lost the spirit that was still there during previous losses. now this is supposed to be a team better than the one that almost beat the caps last year in an intense playoff series. and it is. on paper anyhow. the only difference is that this team is not skating nearly as hard as that team was. not winning battles, not winning faceoffs. not hitting. (well, cally is, but…) that’s hard to watch as a fan. even the knicks have heart. they suck but they have heart. this team doesn’t suck and somebody needs to give this lineup a shake-up. choose your lines and stick to them torts. go back to basics. forwards that are not forechecking need to sit. there’s plenty of youth in hartford. teams can’t be skating freely through the neutral zone like they have been against us. give sangs a run. call up corey locke. grachev. heikkinen. all those contracts that are putting pucks in nets elsewhere. i can’t watch this kind of hockey anynmore. i just want to have a team to root for.

also, watch hawks games. pure delight.

You know what I wish?............

I wish this team finally goes into a true rebuilding mode………..trade away ALL of our veteran players who are worth anything and go with the kids………strictly!! And i say that knowing how much I love watching Gaborik play. This team has always tried to stay competitive regardless of the outcome. they say you cant rebuild in NY, that the fans wont be patient………….gotta try to win now. Thats a bunch of b.s. If you ask any true die-hard Ranger fan they would say yeah, I’ll wait a few years so we can build a team of kids who will someday turn into a true cup contender. But we gotta sell tix, it’s more about money……………..what a shame. We went from missing the playoffs for 7 years being miserable to making the playoffs last 4 years to being just as miserable…………..I love this team no matter what but i just wish it was run with some intelligence………finally.

It's All About The Money

MSG would sell out if the Rangers put 6 dead dogs on the ice. That’s the problem. As long as the money rolls in, ownership has no incentive to make painful changes like firing Sather or Tortorella or buying out some of the deadwood. They are content to go with the flow. I think that the Knicks are already playing 5 dead dogs on the hardwood floor.

Trade?

What would you trade for and who would you trade? I mean we have good players who are proven 20 goal scorers but if you made a trade now I think you would be getting low balled based on their performance this year or you’ll end up making a stupid trade where you give up on a young player that will come back and burn us later on. I personally would like to see the team get a fore checker that can inflict damage on his hits so the other team’s defense has to keep their head up and would like to see a bigger forward with decent fighting skills that can take a regular shift replace lisin and higgins. on defense we would all like to see redden and rosival gone I also think giradi is expendable to make room for one more of our young talented offensive d-man and you replace two with rugged stay at home clear the crease and occasionally scrap d-men to balance out this teams softness and give protection to gaborik , delzotto, lunquist, and staal because i think these message board would have a different feel if it was gaborik taking that head shot last night instead of anisimov. Voros, brashear, and boyle aren’t really a deterrent because when we put them on the ice the other team puts the puck in the net and they are too slow to fore check and not talented enough to carry the puck.

I didnt say trade the kids.............trade away the vets and get a total youth movement

in here. It might take 3, 4, or 5 years but you know what? we’ll get there and be contenders for years

by giantsNYrangers on Nov 29, 2009 12:11 PM EST up reply actions

fine with me. rebuild for 2-3 years. get some good draft picks and make a young team.

dubi cally anisimov grachev lisin parenteau boyle byers staal girardi mdz gilroy

than avery prospal gaborik can stay

and once we have our core set than we can bring in a few players for a boost.

i mean look at the isles now. they sucked for a few years. got some good picks. and now, they have like 15 mil left to spend. if over the offseason they bring in a few good players all of a sudden their a contender.

And Lisin

Was not hurt. Tortorella stated after the game in his post game interview that Lisin was tought a lesson and that he needed to learn the direction this team wants to go. Also said that if he had another body to dress he would have but there wasnt anyone else so he made him pretty much watch the game. I like the move. Light a fire under the kids ass.

by giantsNYrangers on Nov 29, 2009 4:43 PM EST up reply actions

I say there are only a few players on this whole team that i wouldnt move at all. Here you go...

Lundqvist (obviously)
Gaborik (obviously)
Avery
Anisimov
Staal
Del Zotto
Callahan
Dubinsky
Higgins (I believe he has what it takes to succeed here and he will be just fine…He works really freakin hard)
Girardi
Gilroy
The rest can be had for anything… Especially Drury and Rozsival!! Ill take a half eaten Thanksgivibg turkey for them.
I say we trade vets with upside like the Prospals and the Kotalik’s. Those guys will be valuable commodities come the trade deadline.

by RangerFan5 on Nov 29, 2009 11:46 AM EST reply actions

i agree but get rid of higgins. simple as this.

hes not worht 2.5 mil. he doesnt score. betts and sjo worked just as hard and put up the same amount of points.

i said above. kep those u mentioned. bring up grachev and byers, keep parenteau.

and than, once we have our core group, we can bring in a few big players for that extra boost.

i know many of you will not agree with this but...

i thought we played well tonight.. except for vally who just sucks and could be the worst backup goalie ever but we dominated the second period, the first 15 minutes of the first were pretty much all rangers except some little shots on goal by the pens that vally was some how able to stop.. the third was different but ony because vally blew u and gave up th 2nd crosby goal on that play around the net where he looked like he didnt no what he was doing and this was right after the rangers scored and then almost tied it.. then he gave up the dupuis goal which was one of the worst goals given up(at first at thought he was screened but when i went back and looked he wasnt and all it was, was a little slapshot) and then the team gave up and exploded with the penalties after the cooke hit and all that and they scored 2 more on us but we finaly score 3 and all by dmen and we have are bad goalie in.. we should have easily won this game.. also fire tortarella because he sucks and i have hated him since day1

by kiop900 on Nov 29, 2009 12:50 PM EST reply actions

he does have a slight point..

not about firing torts. but about winning.

we were down by 1. and we let up that crap goal to end the second.

than we came out FIRING in the third and scored to make it a 1 goal game with 19 mins to go.

at that point were in a game and have a great chance at winning. but than what.. vally makes that terrible play behind the net (wtf was that) and than a min later let in that crappy dupuis (i think) shot from the point that was going about 3 mph. honestly, he lost that game for us.

what is this like 15 goals in w games hes let up. hes terrible. bring up ochocinco.

First time poster, long time follower...

Seeing as how everyone is venting their frustration at the quarter mark, I feel like its time to give my two cents. The Rangers were projected to be in the same boat they’re in at the beginning of the season. This really didn’t surprise me much. Sure we got on fire the first 8 or 9 games, but we did that last year as well. The only reason for that was, the NHL wasn’t familiar with our system and the combination of our players. Now they know, and there is nothing else more to say.
It starts at the top, Sather…….should i even dedicate a segment to him? All he did was COACH a stanley cup dynasty stock piled with arguably the best players ever to play the game under one jersey. He butchers the set-up Neil Smith had, which won us the CUP. We miss the playoffs for what seemed like forever and he gets lucky with probably the best trade of ALL time(just an opinion), Anson Carter for Jagr. Jagr essentially saved saved career and all he did since then was put us in what looks like another 7 year drought.
Now to Torts…. He won a cup PRE lockout with a system that was structured to win PRE lockout. He had his shot post lockout and got fired by Tampa because without the red line, his system is garbage. MAYBE it will core a couple goals on some teams with weak D and a “run-and-gun” system similar to ours but not against any team with the likes of a Regheir and Phaneuf. Torts lost all his fire and seems to have given up on his team as much as his team has given up on him. You know Mike Keenan would LOVE to get off TV and back behind the bench and to be honest, I wouldn’t mind a change. Maybe we can get another 7 game win-streak before he’s fired too.
Now to the players……… We have it ALL wrong. I know this is where all the “man Doug your an idiot these players are our future and can score 50 goals” comments. I’m going to list 3 of these players. First is our future hall of famer, Ryan Callahan. The guy has grit, he has heart, he has leadership, a SMALL scoring upside. Now with “all those powers combined” he’s probably the best 3rd liner in the league. Not going to go into much more detail because this could go on for DAYS. Second is Dubinsky. Again grit, heart, hands, vision, but lack of “hockey smarts”. Now let me explain, how many times when you watch Dubinsky, do you say to yourself WOW if only he shot the puck or made that outlet pass to spring whoever, which in comparison to other teams #1 centers, hes a second liner at best. Third and last, oh my captain my captain, Chris Drury. I don’t know if any of you remember when he got to the team, a phrase Sam Rosen said over the air, “Anywhere Drury seems to go, teams win, he’s a winner” . Just the site of Chris Drury ALONE puts opposing teams into shock, make them go into the fetal position and let him score 60 goals a year. THAT is why we pay him 7 million a year. He has a presence unlike any other player the league has ever seen

Hey good read Doug for the most part...........

until you got to Drury. Now let me just tell you that I used to be one of the biggest Chris Drury fans out there going back to CO with his highlight reel goals in the playoffs and yeah even in Buffalo. Guess what? those days are LONG GONE my man. He has been relegated to a $7,000,000 face off man who will give you an occasional goal or good play. “The Captain”? He has no leadership qualities and is handcuffing this organization with his horse choking contract….but thats not his fault, blame Sather for that. I wasnt even upset when he got knocked out w/ a conccusion, didnt miss him at all. As far as Callahan, I agree he has all of those qualities you mentioned but slow down bro in calling him a HOF…..easy guy!!! But welcome to the Bantor Dougee Fresh!!

by giantsNYrangers on Nov 29, 2009 4:56 PM EST up reply actions

Gutting a team solves nothing...

…unless in doing so, we remove ourselves of bloated contracts.

The only contracts I’d look to move at this point are the ones we’re most likely not capable of moving: Rozi, Redden, Brashear. Drury – while bloated, salary-wise – won’t net equal in return. He’s a solid 2nd line center, excellent on the special teams, and – when healthy – gives it his all. The only point in moving bloated contracts is to sell low (based on salary) for prospects that MIGHT hit. None of the 3 bloated contracts can do this.

Firing Sather makes sense…if he didn’t assist in stockpiling a tremendous collection of young stars. A quarter of Hartford is NHL ready. Yes, the Gomez trade was terrible. Still, we didn’t have a choice based on cap limitations and the need for a proven scorer. If he has a fault, it’s overpaying for 2nd tier players almost double their worth (see: Omar Minaya). Don’t get me wrong; I hate some of the moves he’s made. But most made sense at the time.

If there’s one gaping hole on this team, it’s arguably the absence of a two-way, veteran defenseman plus one center of the same mold who can transition from offense to defense. We need a couple more players CONFIDENT in running this team’s offense. We thought we had it in Derek Morris. Complete bust. Ditto Scott Gomez. Right player, wrong system.

We’re not confident with the puck, period. Too much time is spent in our own zone and/or the far end of the neutral zone. We’re timid – as a team – on the forecheck – and/or dump and chase.

Torts is used to a speed team, and we’re simply not that. I believe this team has oodles of heart, but we need a new system…and some quarterbacks to run it. It’s reasons like this why Sather did not dismiss the Forsberg rumor.

We need a first line center, and a first line defenseman. Not rookies.

I agree

with you Dougee. Cally and Duby are role players on a good team not guys you build a team around

as far as offense, i just scouted a UFA list, and Alexander Frolov from LA is an upcoming UFA, hes a young player, got 6 years under his belt in LA, and has had pretty good seasons in the past..just imagine it Frolov-Prospal-Gaborik, i think it would be a good jumpstart to all of em before the trade deadline just an idea to put out there

by LIrangersfan on Nov 29, 2009 4:02 PM EST reply actions

thanks Jim, and BLS thats exactly what I was trying to get at, I’m glad you grasped my point. We’ve invested time and precious money into 3rd line players. Sather AND our scouting team have a lack of “star” perception A la Hugh Jessiman and Al Montoya + countless others. But we can’t forget the ONE they did do right….the next Pavel Bure, Mr Alexei Cherapanov that DIED. Sadly we could’ve had Zack Parise AND Ryan Getzlaf. Don’t get me wrong, we got EXTREMELY lucky with Lundqvist as they saw him as just a backup to Weekes and Staal was a pleasant and average 1st round pick. It also looks like the next 5 or so draft classes lack the stars the past 5 or 6 had. So even if we do start tanking seasons…theres no more Crosby’s, Ovechkins, or Tavares’ left.

by Dougee on Nov 29, 2009 4:43 PM EST reply actions

its more like no guts then heart..

i knew they were going to get blown right out of the arena we need a major trade we need secondary scoring gaborik can,t be a one man show look at every n.h.l. team they have 2 scoring lines we do.nt i am willing to package dubi and or staal for another 40 goal scorer or maybe get more desperate give jagr a call hey gaborik and jagr on the same line thats pretty good if you ask me cause this is not a playoff team with this current roster its a rebuilding non playoff team with the current line up so wake up slats and do something for christ sakes …..

by lohaus#54 on Nov 29, 2009 6:16 PM EST reply actions

Ack!

Please no, Lohaus. (Love the handle, by the way!). This is the Rangers’ tactic of the years we missed the playoffs. I’d rather call Jagr than trade our two best, semi-proven youngsters. Why we traded Nigel Dawes is beyond me. He – like Dubi/Staal – clearly have NHL careers ahead of them.

by pslieber on Nov 29, 2009 10:44 PM EST up reply actions

First step - Get rid of Sather

Next, let a new GM hire a new coach. Sather is too dangerous to let loose right now, he will trade our future for over the hill “Torts” guys. He will panic and destroy everything before he finally gets the ax. He must be stopped before the"scorched earth" plan goes into effect. We must go into re-bulit mode ASAP, this team right now is one of the worse in the league. Let’s see what the guys in hartford can do for the rest of the season.Trade all expendable players for draft picks. At least if we stock pile draft choices we should get some high picks next year. This year is finnished.
