Rangers Recap: Penguins 5 Rangers 2
Same story, same result. No one other than Marian Gaborik scores, John Tortorella benches the wrong players and Michal Rozsival is still finding ways to screw up games.
What are the Rangers going to do? What can the Rangers do? Who is to blame here, Tortorella or Glen Sather? Will the Rangers recover? Are they even a good team? Why isn't Henrik Lundqvist playing his normal "brick wall" style of goaltending? Why can't Chris Higgins or Ryan Callahan score? Why is Michael Rozsival so bad? Why haven't Corey Locke or Dane Byers been called up? Why is Chris Drury so bad this year, what happened to him? Why is Ales Kotalik so bad in five-on-five play? Why is Donald Brashear playing on the third and second lines? What happened to our lethal power play? Would we have been better off with Tom Renney at the helm? Is Glen Sather even paying attention to this season? Does he think everything is okay? Why doesn't Jim Donal fire him? When is Dolan going to start getting involved in this team? Why do I even root for them?
Notice a trend in the above paragraph? Yup all questions, no answers. That's what life is like as a Ranger fan right now, and no one seems to know anything.
The Rangers found a way to blow a 7-1 start to the season to come back to level ground at 13-13-1. The supposed fiery coach that was Tortorella has lost this team, and as a result they are floundering.
It really is no longer debatable this team is tuning out Tortorella. It is no longer debatable that they need a move or a spark or something. I'm not doing my empty netters, the Penguins scored enough goals in the past two games for tonight. I am also not recapping the game, it was awful. Vent here, don't hold back they deserve it!

No trading of 1st or 2nd rounders for overpaid guys as a panic move.
That’s my biggest fear, that we’ll continue to trade high draft picks and young players for half-year rentals who help us secure the 7th seed in the East.
i agree wholeheartedly…im really afraid our draft picks, cally, dubi, even staal could see the trading block if that means another 7th or 8th seed playoff berth…i hate sather with a burning passion…

Seriously, I'd rather miss the playoffs and keep the future intact
All of this has happened before, and it will all happen again
Btw, Dawes scored his 8th goal tonight for the Flames, which puts him ahead of all Rangers not named Gaborik. We traded him Morris, who played a total of 25 games for us.
good for dawes...
i loved him when he was on the rangers…no homo
I never liked Dawes
brought some stuff to the table but was too small. I doubt he is ever more than a 3rd line 20 goal scorer.

I've noticed that Torts has Renny-itis all of a sudden.
Can we please go to back to the opening night lineup (Dubi and Redden aside for now)??
And leave it there for a few games?
Its really not like the shuffling is working.
Just put it back and leave it. See what happens.
Just cuz they don’t do anything for a few games….doesn’t mean we need to scrap the lines.

try to dump as much salary as possible: its time to rebuild fellas…trade if and ONLY if we can dump some dead weight (rozi, dreary, higgins, kots, redden even though hes been playing better) or if we can get a good draft pick/prospect back (even if this means dumping off a prospal or girardi at the deadline)…this seasons already done as far as im concerned\
…sadly i dont think anything i said above will happen; rather, good ol’ slats will be trying to salvage the season (which in his and daddy dolan’s mind is to make the playoffs and get some extra $$$$) at any cost…i wonder if staal, dubi, cally and co. are safe…i say not if it means a squeak in into the playoffs
Our fearless captain
drury sickens me…he has absolutely zero enthusiasm at all, in game or post game…i honestly think hes braindead…his bull, cookie cutter answers disgust me…if torts wants to light a possible fire under the team is to strip dru of the C…he never deserved to get it in the first place…what a bum…
time to bench. here we go.
drury kotalik and roszival
sangs can take rozis spot, and id like them to bring in chelios. seirously.
forget drury kotalik and voros and bring up byers and locke. here we go.
gaborik prospal avery dubinsky callahan higgins anisimov parenteau lisin boyle locke byers (these are our forwards)
staal girardi gilroy mdz sangs and redden
(thats our defense)
alas we can never admit mistakes and nothing will change because thats just what the rangers do. will trade for some veterans. and trade all our prospects and picks. get the 7th spot, and get knocked out in the 1st round. not a shocker really.
if torts reallly wants to put some fear into these players. bench drury. but no. bench lisin instead. not roszival or drury. but enver lisin. no wonder this team doesnt listen to him.
LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
sad thing is...
nothing will happen…they’ll just keep losing games and probably trade our young players for a shitty old vet…damn this sucks…sad thing as die hard ranger fans we’re gonna keep watching this shitty ass team…seriously they should bench drury rosival higgins and callahan…these players dont do anything anyway…the person i feel sorry the most for is gabby…i bet you he’s regretting he signed with the rangers…this team blows
Not Worried............
I’d rather have a season, even a losing one, with young rookie defensemen making mistakes and learning, then paying older guys with no future in our club to do the same.It may be hard to swallow all season, but these young d-men are our future, and they are EXTREMELY talented.I sure as hell hope sather doesnt go into panic mode and trade away all these guys, just to watch them flourish somewhere else,we’ve seen that before.
Patience, let em learn, our future is bright.

The Pens getting hot had nothing to do with their all-star and no1 D coming back, a change in coaching that fired the team up (and the new coach played a style that was really suited for the roster), and some savvy deadline deals by the GM. Clearly it was all just fixed!!

if you have a legit shot at the puck, which Rozsival did since he was facing Rupp, you take it. He could have easily detered that goal.

At this point I dont really mind keeping Redden. But they just need to suck it up and buy out Rozi’s contract. I realize it’s half his salary over the years left but i’d rather do that then send him to the minors and make the wolfpack suck.
I also see no enthusiasm in many players in this team. Time for a coaching change ……
no buyouts. dump him in the minors, big difference. i dont want rozy taking up cap space for the next 4 years.

trying to not be negative on this team, though seems everyone else has found it. i have been in and out on threads, just few game threads.
i would rather tank the year and get a top 3 or 4 pick, get a superstar and start over because the big fear is sather makes a move for someone like vinny taking on another albatross deal giving up picks and prospects to squeak. if we fire sather maybe someone will come in and admit his mistakes and dump the awful salaries.
also have to say as bad as rozy is, wtf is torts thinking putting him w staal so he plays more minutes? staal-gilroy, mdz-girardi, rozy-sangs (5 min a night)
well I would agree
this is a very deep draft and a top 3 or 4 pick would be nice. Like I said about Kabanov is a jewl as well, there are tons of them. I want them all

and if you look at the standings we are only a handful of points out of a top 5 pick already. the scariest part of all of this for me is this is how bad this team is with gaborik playing out of him mind right now w MVP numbers, he is going to cool off at some point, how ugly will it get then.

13-13-1
Wow. Somehow a 7-1 start turns into that: a .500 record. This is disgusting. There was effort there tonight, at least, but it is still the lack of scoring and little defensive mistakes that are costing us games. The alarming thing is the fact that nothing is being done to change that.
Tortorella is trying to send messages by benching/scratching players but it is only adding to the problems this team faces. And now goaltending is suddenly becoming an issue with Hank looking shaky out there. This is bad, real bad.

joe, how much do you follow the prospects since i am torn at the moment between hall who was deemed the guy a couple years ago but is only a LW vs a guy like Seguin who is a center who is scoring at a very similar clip. Positionally I usually prefer the center.
Hall 30GP 23G 30A 53Pts
Seguin 24GP 20G 20A 40pts.
i'm pretty good on prospects
I will say that Hall is pretty brilliant overall and has shown alot more consistancy than Seguin. But it seems to me that Seguin might have an edge on the scoring touch.
Although honestly Krill Kabanov might be the star of that draft class even if he isn’t picked 1st overall. He is only just 17 years old and has more than a point per game in the QMJHL.

I agree talent wise he is just as good.
you know who else is ripping things up in the QMJHL?
Ryan Bourque 24 points (11 goals) in 25 games. He looks like an absolute steal. Plus Ethan Werek has 15 goals in the OHL that’s only 7 behind Hall and 5 behind Seguin

Top 10 Observations
1. Good first period.
2. Totally not surprised that we gave up the equalizer within the first shift of scoring. Didn’t expect that it would be just eleven seconds later… love Rosival’s decision to move out across center ice on Crosby. That’s the same decision that pulled him out of position and left Cindy in on essentially a breakaway. Sick of Rosival.
3. Mike Rupp scores 3 goals tonight. That in a nutshell should say something about where we are. Did anyone else see Joan Rivers on that red carpet that Rosival rolled out for him on his second goal.
4. The rest of the D played hard. I think they’re let down that this chump is making so much coin and should be riding the pine in the AHL. I say send him and Voros into the Thunderdome. Two men enter – one man leaves. See how that blinking douchbag handles that shit.
5. Gaborik is really good.
6. It’ll all turn around when Dubi comes back – you’ll see.
7. Rosival …. that’s right – SUCKS!
8. Torts should take a night off – see how the team responds to Sully
9. Bring up Ochocinco
10. Stop this losing crap
you're the man Mike

Management
If its not time for Sather to go give him a lifetime contract and let me give up my 65 love of the Rangers. I have already done that with the Knicks goodbye Sather…
To answer your questions in order Joe
1. My guess? Keep playing mediocre hockey.
2. Not much, the only players they have with trade value they don’t want to trade.
3. Both are to blame, but I am putting this more on Tortorella.
4. That’s a really good question, and its nice to see you ask it. Glad to see you’ve come around on what I’ve been telling you for a month.
5. Higgins is just snakebit right now, and maybe Callahan just isn’t the goal scorer we thought he was.
6. He is getting older, injuries and surgery have taken their toll, he wasn’t anything great to begin with, and he is a bad fit for this system, whatever system that may be.
7. Because they won’t admit mistakes on contracts and send down the necessary people to clear cap space to bring up Wolfies.
8. Chris Drury is a dead horse, I can’t spend another day beating him, I need my strength.
9. We were warned of this on Kotalik.
10. In fairness to Brashear, he played decently last night, but still has about as much business on the second line as my Aunt Ruthie.
11. The Power Play stopped working when everything else did.
12. No.
13. Yes, but only in between cigars. Yes, he thinks everything is fine.
14. As for this question, I am going to let the Rangers answer this for you. Here is why Jim Dolan doesn’t fire anyone or get involved in this team:
New York have sold out 169 consecutive regular season games, dating back to Nov. 5, 2005 against New Jersey; the last regular season non-sellout was Oct. 31, 2005 vs. Montreal (17,697); including the playoffs, the Rangers sellout streak is now at 183 games.
15. Because you are a loyal fan. That’s why we’re all here.

I heard...
The guys on the radio discussing the possibility of a “boycott” of one Browns game in Cleveland as a display of frustration over the inability to put together a solid team. Perhaps we could try that hear. Who’s got the mouthpiece to make it happen? I would be willing to pay for a ticket, tear it up and lend my support.
We would also need to make it loud and clear if Sather dumps prospects for other rented players, we would continue the boycott. I don’t see many other alternatives except to grin and bear it.
By the way

Beating a dead horse...
My greatest fear is that to save his job, Sather will trade any valuable player and deplete Hartford. Then he will finally get canned and we will be left in ruins for years to come.
There isn’t much left to say, there is no light at the end of the tunnel as long as Slats is still in charge. A new GM, a new coach would be a refreshing start. The fish sticks will win a cup before us, is that enough to make you really sick.
Last night's game
I actually thought we played much better last night. Maybe thats just me. That third goal was really a shitty bad luck bounce that got by HanK.
This team looks hungover half the time. Where’s the conditioning? I thought the point of a season long hockey boot-camp was to be able to outlast other teams? They look like they are spending too much time enjoying the city and not focused on hockey. Dinners, wine tasting, whatever they’re doing, none of it mixes well with hockey during the season. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Lunquist was/is taking his lambo to practices and we know about it because he got in his accident on the way to one early in the season. Shame on you hank and whoever esle is living it up. Thats not the right state of mind if you ask me, save that for the off-season as a reward for success.
We need to package players in trades to move up in quality. We lack some serious skills after gabby. Thats why these games start to run away from us towards the end. Our guys can keep us in it for the most part but towards the end they seemed to get overwhelmed by the other teams better abilities to score. Z, Antro, Heatley, all proven scoring units and we passed on them. SATHERRRRR!!!!
Thanks for a great place to rant. You guys do a great job on this board and it brings me some sanity.
I’m glad there isn’t a game till Saturday. I need a break. I’m heading to Atlanta tomorrow for a quick trip and if I get a chance I’m heading over to see the Fish Sticks vs. the Thrashers Thursday night. It’ll be nice to see a game I’m not so emotionally attached to. You can’t beat $15 tickets.
I want to rant about how bad things are but I don’t have the time…
So let me say 2 good things…
First:
At times I thought we played really good last night (with the exception of Rozzy). Pengs are a quality side.
Second:
Torts said a while ago (and I paraphrase)
- I don’t worry about their guys I worry about our guys. I’m not the kind of coach who tries to match lines with the other team. I’m just not that good at it. -
This was the first game where I noticed he was trying to match some lines. In the NHL that is something most teams just have to do against teams like the Pengs and Caps.
Maybe Torts is learning something?
Last thought…
It’s time to send Rozy to Hartford and never look back. No matter how hard you squeeze him lemonade isn’t going to come out.
Damn you Glen Sather, Damn You!
State of The NY Rangers
First time commenting on the Banter and I have waited long enough. The NY Rangers as of right now are confused and feeling the pressure of the expectations of what it is to be a Ranger. Torts is not to blame but there are problems. He has lost some of his players and it might not be his fault. Glen Sather’s head needs to be rolling on the floor execution style. Messier needs to get his hand on this team and walk into the locker room and ask “whos with” or “who wants out”. Rosival gets no choice…bye bye….time to shake up the locker room. 1st line stays…maybe time to let Big Vally go…see what you could get for him. The enigma Wade Redden has suprisingly played ok….not great, not bad. This team needs an identity. Get the team excited…there is no life or emotion other than Gaborik when he scores and Avery….Even Lundqvist got pissed last and wanted to throw a check behind the net. Thanks for letting me rant….Hopefully some days off will change allow the Rangers to change the envirnment around them.
Welcome to Blueshirt Banter ryebread, sorry you aren’t posting under better circumstances

It's the end of the world as we know it.....
The sky is falling…..the sky is falling…..
Good grief.
While there are plenty of problems (mostly the total invisibility of secondary scoring) with the offense – the problem with the current team, in terms of goals against and not winning games, is almost entirely on their own side of the red line.
While Rozsival has been the most prominent ‘victim’ – largely by virtue of his own ineptness – none of the other defensemen have been completely innocent or even ‘stand-outs’ in terms of their play. Each one has a good game/bad game and sometimes it even comes down to shifts. Their decision-making has been questionable at best, downright despicable at times. Until these issues have been addressed – through whatever means the organization comes up with – secondary scoring will be a secondary issue. Double the goal output in any of the last several losses, and they STILL lose the game – and when it comes down to wins and losses – they don’t ask HOW – just HOW MANY? Doesn’t matter if you lose by one or seven – it ends up in the loss column and you get NO points.
I highly doubt that John Tortorella expected these problems. He figured that he had a shutdown pair in Staal/Girardi, a serviceable group in Redden and Rozsival and plenty of upside with MDZ and Gilroy. Now what we see is a Staal and Girardi who are struggling; a Redden who’s been better than many expected but still, in my own personal opinion, sucks; a Rozsival who deserves nothing less than to be drawn-and-quartered; and Gilroy and Del Zotto who have been better than expected – but are still rookies and prone to mistakes.
Add on to that the fact that Lundqvist has not been playing to his expected level lately, and you’ve got a recipe for giving up 4 or more goals on any given night against ‘good’ or ‘elite’ teams.
Fix the defense – the rest will take care of itself.
Hey Maven I agree. Major changes need to be made. Particularly on the blue line.
Everything you mentioned is accurate. Staal/Girardi are underachieving, R&R are not good at all and alot of the time are completely worthless, and yes MDZ and Gilroy have very bright futures but right now are rookies and we cannot expect mistake free hockey out of them. The experiment with Redden has not panned out and it’s time to make a major decision on him and Rozsival is garbage plain & simple. Him allowing Rupp to just walk in a rip a shot passed Hank…(who drops to his knees way to early btw)….was the epitome of how bad of a player Rozsival has become. I truly thought they would give R&R some time early on and if they hurt the team more than helped then a move would be made but it jus goes to show you how much I really know or dont know for that matter. For the most part this entire team is underachieving and are poorly coached and do not have strong management leading the way. And an owner who really doesnt give a damn as long as the seats are filled and the money keeps rolling in. And we as genuine die-hard fans continue to keep coming to games and buying hot dogs and drinking beer. So in the end do we really think that there is any urgency on ownerships part to make any changes? Probably not., in fact def not. I mean really, do you think Jim Dolan even knows who Michael Rozsival is? If you asked him who he was he would really have to think about it…………how sad.

There are plenty of people ‘hating’ on John Tortorella right now (or possibly for weeks). And while I can’t say I blame them, I adamantly disagree with them. The same for those who talk about “no leadership”/“locker room a mess” etc. etc. ad infinitum – like they have the foggiest clue of what’s going on behind closed doors. (Insert “rolling eyes” emoticon here)
Tortorella warned about the players’ ability to adapt to/understand the new system and have it become ‘instinctive’ early in during training camp and several times after that. He stated that it would take months – probably till the end of the year (calendar, i.e. 2009) – and that there would be rough spots along the way. Wow. Pretty insightful, don’t you think? Here we are at the beginning of December, and it looks exactly like what he said….
If you gave the organization a clean sheet – do you really think they’d have Redden/Rozsival? I’d guess “NOT”. And certainly not at the $$$ they’re currently at.
Ranger fans are mostly bi-polar – they want to make the playoffs, and go deep into them – but they don’t want boring hockey (aka “The Renney Years”).
The biggest mistake and dumbest move (dumber than the Redden contract!) the organization could make right now is firing Tortorella.
