Rangers Recap: Canucks 4, Rangers 1: What the French Just Happened?
So much more actually went on in this game than I might relay over the next ten minutes you're reading this; but I'll do my best to cover this latest tango between the last team we beat in the Stanley Cup Finals.
The game started out reasonably ok with end to end action and a crossbar shot by Ales Kotalik that had Ranger fans believing the club would find the back of the net soon. But, as they failed to take their momentum onto the scoreboard, the Canucks eventually woke up and took over the second half of the first period. This eventually led to a goal being scored by Mikael Samuelsson which was assisted by Ryan Kesler to put the Canucks up one going into the second period.
The second period started out the same way as the last two games for the Rangers, in the fact that they actually decided to play to their potential. The Blueshirts outshot the Canucks 14 to 8 in the period that saw them level the game at one going into the third. The Rangers made their statement about six and a half minutes in when Brandon Dubinsky saucered a pass to a somehow open Christopher Higgins right in front of the net who snapped the pass through Andrew Raycrofts five-hold to tie the game (Late night/Labatt Blue's must have gotten to me as this actually occured in the third period). The Rangers could have had the lead going into the third when Shane O'Brien got four minutes for high-sticking Ryan Callahan. The Power-Play was above-average, and in the end set the game up for an interesting third period.
At this point of the re-cap, I want to state that I am going to just repeat what I saw, and leave my opinion to a rant which will come at a later date. The Canucks played great team defense when it came to Marion Gaborik tonight. They crowded him and cut off his shooting lanes, which is very frustrating as a forward. Kevin Bieska and Gaborik were battling all night, and Bieska got Gaborik pretty good one time. Gaborik went back at Bieska as best he could, but in the end received more of the same from the Canuck blueliner. This led to a line-change where Ryan Kesler found himself surrounded by Gaborik and three other Rangers, who had no intentions of asking him for an autograph. Tempers like you don't see that much nowadays were evident, to the point where Sean Avery ripped the stick out of a Canucks hand while both players were on their respective benches. But back to the boring hockey. The Rangers end up with a Power-Play out of all of this, where Christopher Higgins tied the game at one on a one timer from right in front of the net. The Rangers then get caught puck-watching Ryan Kesler skate circles around their zone while Rick Rypien snuck in back-door to put the Canucks up 2-1. Voros takes a penalty, Rozival puts the cherry on top, and the Vancouver Canucks grab the game by the neck with the spirit of the 18,630 at GM place to finish off the Rangers with a Power-Play goal by Mikael Samuelsson. The night was topped off by an Empty-Netter by Henrik Sedin (who took a hard shot to the foot), which finally ended an interesting game for both teams to say the least.
Quick thoughts as more will come:
- The Rangers are standing around in the wrong ends of the rink. You're taught as a kid to play zone when you're tired, but to never stand still when you're in the Offensive zone. If you're in the D zone and you're tired, get it out. If you're in the O zone and you're tired, get off the ice. Simple as that.
- I will not go into the Gaborik-Bieska situation in full detail at all, but who I am disappointed in is Dane Byers. Not for his role in the first situation, but for his fight at the end of the game. I understand he might have been trying to make a statement, but the Blueshirts tonight stood up for its star player but then couldn't get the job done where it matters; which is on the scoreboard. Just let it go at that point, in my opinion.
- Admit it, you thought the Rangers were gonna win when Higgins netted the tying goal. I thought he was going to score two his next shift. Congrats to Mr. Higgins as I really like him as a player and I know he has the talent to riddle the scorehsheet.
- Henrik Lundqvist was Vezina-caliber, again.
- Finally, do not write this team off for the next two games. I really thought the Rangers were going to win the game after the Gaborik-Bieska situation. This team needs to be tested here early on if they have any hope in getting to an Eastern Conference final unlike any other Ranger team since the lockout. The next two games, to me, could be bigger than any Devil, Penguin, Islander, or Flyer game all year if they manage four points. We will see, though.
More on the game when the sun comes up.

"that saw them level the game at one going into the third."
Higgins’ tying goal was in the third….after the 15 man shoving match and avery ripping the stick out of O’Brien’s hand. Goal happened right after the PP ended. There were no goals in the second

Yep
Don’t know what I was thinking I mis-wrote. Thanks for pointing that out.

Not a bad viewpoint from the Big Apple…just one thing.
It was Kesler and Gaborik together that started that whole melee…not Bee-ek-sa. The Kes’ line had that assignment against Gabby too.
SOB got the rest of the game for fishing with his stick when Avery pulled it out of his hand.
I thought that turned the game actually. The Canucks played pissed after that.
Ohh, and in the comments afterward, Bieksa accused the ref of having it in for him when he gave him that stupid penalty from the box.
Kesler was great though…huh?

Disagree on Byers Statement
I like the grit Byers brings in that way. He is trying to make the team so he was trying to doing what he can when he can. The disappointment should be on the defensive lapses.

I agree, I’m not disapointed in Byers at all. Maybe it wasn’t the best time for that second fight. But he’s bringing some much needed grit to the team. I wish we showed more of that every night.

wtf? and on that call on the rozi? thats messed up. sedin should be suspended for pulling shit like that.
heres my rule. if a player dives they get suspended 5 games.. that would take it out of the game right?
canucks scored on that terrible call by the refs. listen im not blaming it all on them. we had terrible defensive lapses. but there needs to be a change in officiating. everygame its terrible.

I know Tortorella has been changing the lines to get the offense going, but I think in doing so he’s actually done the reverse. No continuity has grinding this offense to a halt. Guys are constantly trying to get a feel for their teammates and then "*poof* they’re playing with someone else.
It really all started when Sean came back, the lines were nice and calm before that. I know injuries and such have played a role as well but he needs to pick a group and stick with it.

Alright, good job Joe...
There’s little chance of me being up to see the start of a West coast game, but I did see the highlights on NHL Network early this morning.
I’m sure there’s a lot more to it, but in the few seconds of video I saw, it appears Rosival missed his assignment on each of the first 2 goals. Is that a fair take? I’m getting tired of the same poor play game in/game out from the same bad players.

First Goal
Was all Redden. He handed it over and then watched the puck go in.
by Blueshirts Rock on Nov 4, 2009 10:00 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Redden gave the puck up because the team decided changing while the puck was in their end was a good idea.
Then Rozsival let his guy get behind him, who not coincidentally is who jammed in the rebound.
So it wasn’t ’all Redden."

TY
Yes, that’s the part of the play not shown in the high(or low)-lights. All I was able to see was Samuelson behind Rosy and the puck go in the net.
by NYdemo on Nov 4, 2009 10:35 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
On the 2nd goal
I originally thought it was Rozsival’s assignment also, but I think Rypien coming down the side was either Avery or Anisimov’s, more likely the latter. They were both in the area and both turned their focus to Kesler while Rypien snuck in behind.

Roszival allowed his man to carry the puck deep when it was 3 rangers 1 canuck, he backed him in and did not challenge when he clearly had help, thus causing the play. That is how Rozi is responsible…
by Tophubufu on Nov 4, 2009 12:10 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
On the 1st goal
Rozsival got caught in between, after Redden threw the puck around the boards, Kesler picked it up and started to break towards the net, Rozsival broke towards him for some reason and that’s why he left Samuelsson behind him.

Why does all the cool stuff happen when the Rangers are playing out west? Like the scuffle (I wouldn’t call it a brawl), Higgins first goal, Rosy getting a penalty shot last year.. AND SCORING. Can they start these games at 5pm Pacific?
by DJ Wuss on Nov 4, 2009 9:54 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Redden Was SLEW FOOTED
Did anyone notice that on the first Vancouver goal, Redden was tripped? The Rangers announcers mentioned nothing of it, but the canuck player dragged his feet intentionally to trip Redden. Instead of a Ranger power play, they were down 1-0. It was a big turning point. If you missed it, check out the video of last night’s game. It took him away from defending against the guy who got the rebound and scored (Samuelsson).
I’m not the biggest Redden fan but I think his play has been fairly consistent with a few mistakes here and there.

Roszival must GO… I don’t care what they do, waive him, release him, buy him out, take the cap hit because he puts more stress on the players around him. He always seems to be watching the play he is constantly out of position, and he’s always making bad passes which put our other players in a bad situation which more than likely will end up in a turn over. You cannot have a good offense if you dont have a solid defense they go hand in hand and it seems everytime a goal is scored he is on the ice, he is a veteran Dman. It is acceptable if i see some minuses next to gilroy or DZ, but for a veteran player to constantly make mistakes it’s unbelievable… bury the guy in the minors

I agree with you, but....
Rozsival @ even strength
GAON/60 is 2.30.
GAOFF/60 is 2.68
He’s been on the ice for 9 ES, 2PP goals.
Girardi/Staal have been 15,6 and 14,5 respectively. Yes they get more icetime, but the per 60 numbers for these two are also worse than Rozsival.
The reason it “seems everytime a goal is scored while he’s on the ice” is because he has by far the worst Corsi Rating (measure of shots generated for vs shots against) is easily the worst on the team, and that’s against the worst opposition. On top of all that, he starts in the offensive end over 58% of the time.
So yes, he sucks, but he’s not the lone culprit.

How about making a Pass?
Is there a measure for the number of times Rozi brings the puck up to the blue-line and misses the teammate he’s passing to?
Or how often Redden panics and throws the puck up the boards to the opposition waiting patiently for it to arrive?
While Redden hasn’t been as bad as last season, both of them need to go by year’s end if not sooner. We have young talented D’s in Hartford who need some seasoning up here and we need the cap space to sign a #1 Center, Staal and Girardi.

its gonna be tough to get rid of the R&R, but miracles do happen, lets keep our fingers crossed

A) If he brings the puck in and misses his teammate, he’s not generating shots towards the net, so yes, that’s effectively captured in his Corsi
B) is LOL. That happened last night so it’s fresh in your head. Redden’s been good thus far. Not perfect obviously, but because everyone hates him everyone highlights the two-three mistakes of his and ignores it when he’s been fine. Girardi has had a much worse season than Redden, but because he’s homegrown and doesn’t make 6.5m nobody seems to give a shit.
C) Yes, both need to go. Don’t count on re-signing Girardi. See above.
D) for Matt – give up the Kovalchuk pipe-dream.

Moshe…its a black and white rule in the last two minutes of a game, to prevent fights at the end of games already decided from getting out of hand.
The fine is because we all know its the coach ( its not…every time…but they do send them out while saying “send a message on this shift boys” ) that puts the guys on the ice, especially in the last two minutes…
The Rangers got a gift on the melee though, so it evens out. How Kesler got the extra 2 min was beyond me. He gets mugged by 5 guys and Bieksa has to rescue him,and gets the extra deuce out of it all?
Maybe it had something to do with SOB losing his mind and poking Avery with his stick. He actually got a 10 and not a game for that.
But his coach effectively made it a game by stapling his stupid ass to the bench the rest of the 3rd.
Peace

Oh no…the downward spiral begins……..you gotta worry that the Rangers didn’t pick up 4 against the Isles and the Wild. This also emphasizes the need for someone who can score if Gabby goes down…..since he seems to be the only one doing it consistently. Shop Rozi and or Drury, if nothing more than to free up cap space, maybe he can be dealt at the deadline…….but i’m sure he has a no trade clause….why not…every mediocre 15 goal scorer should have one on top of that 6 million per yr contract. Did I mention I hate Sather?
by earthworm on Nov 4, 2009 7:09 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Isles
Are 5-4 with 5 OT losses this year, they’re not a pushover no matter how much we hate them.
The Wild was a bad loss though, no question.
Drury has a no movement clause. He goes nowhere.
If Sanguinetti continues to play well and Rozsival keeps ending up in Sather’s doghouse, that trade will come this year.
Regrettably, you may have to wait til next year to see them dumped.
