NY Post: Rangers scouting Peter Forsberg in Sweden
According to today's NY Post, the Rangers are scouting former Avalanche center Peter Forsberg, who is looking for a chance to come back to the NHL. Forsberg will be playing in the Karjala Cup this weekend.
Obviously, Forsberg isn't going to play for $700K, which is about how much cap space the Rangers have to work with right now, so some major money maneuvering would have to be done.
Highlights of the article (click the link above for the whole story):
The Rangers, who go into tonight's game here against the Oilers and assistant coach Tom Renney having scored five goals while losing three of their last four in regulation, are in desperate need of a playmaking center, of that there is no question.
The questions, however, are, a) whether Forsberg is healthy enough to compete in the NHL following a series of surgeries on his right foot and ankle; and, b) whether the center has interest in coming to New York.
"Well," said Sather in response to the latter, "I'd have to say a lot of that would probably depend on money."

NO. This is not worth it. Sign him in March if you want to make a Cup push – but to have another fragile winger for (presumably) a significant amount of cap space?! Not worth it at all. If they could ditch Redden’s or Drury’s salary for him, I’d change my mind. But looking up and down their roster – they’d probably be moving guys like Kotalik, Prospal, Higgins, Callahan or Dubinsky. And for a one year rental? It’ll blow up in the Rangers faces similar to how Favre blew up in the Jets faces.

I agree
I don’t want Forsberg, he will ask for too much $$$, we would probably have to send some guys to Hartford and it would take away ice time from a guy like Anisimov who needs it to keep developing and progressing. I also don’t believe he will ever solve his foot problem. He was awesome in his prime, but now too old and injury prone. Just retire already!!!

well if he signs after the olympics for example he could sign for approx 2 mil and the prorated amount on our cap would be the 700K

i would love forsberg, but where are we getting the money? maybe a rozy buy out. doubt it. drury isnt going anywhere and redden has been playing better. theres just no room for him right now.

Weird find. I don’t care about Forsberg, but why not scout Chelios while they’re at it, or find out if Sakic skates regularly at a local rink… scout him too.

They already did scout Chelios, and almost signed him to a Wolf Pack contract, but he signed with the Chicago Wolves instead
Rangers made Chelios AHL offer

Why not
healthy he can be effective and if he comes cheap at the end of the season he would be perfect for a playoff run.

Simply because we are supposed to be trying to get younger.
I suppose if the trade deadline is near, we are in playoff position, we appear to be on the verge of making a cup run, he comes CHEAP, there are no better deals(trades or otherwise), it might be worth considering. That seems like a lot of “ifs” though.
The question however, is “If Peter Forsberg proves to be healthy, would I want the Rangers to sign him?” and at this point the answer is NO. Maybe that will change in the future, but right now, definitely NO.

Trying to get younger? They are young! They are one of the youngest teams in the NHL!

OK
Yes they are. The point is they’ve made an obvious effort, this season, to avoid the player in the twilight of his career. Why reverse that trend? Especially with one so frequently injured in recent years.

its just one player
no reason not to take a risk on one guy who by playoff time wont be taking a spot away from anyone

You act like they're talking a 12 yr deal here
For a 1-yr deal at the end of season, there’s no reason not to roll the dice on a dynamic power forward who at his peak was one of the 5 best players in the NHL.
Now if you’re worried Sather will try to sign him for 4 yrs, well that’s a different story.

Not sure I’m “acting like anything”… I was asked would I sign him and the answer is “NO”. I wouldn’t sign him unless it was later in the season and we had real possibilities of making some noise come playoff time. I suppose, as I eluded to earlier, there is scenarios that would make this attractive to me, but there’s a lot of “if’s” to sway me. It has been about 8 years since his production was above what is expected from the current roster.
by NYdemo on Nov 6, 2009 5:42 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Three years ago he had 55 points in 57 games.
Two years ago he had 17 pts in 9 games.
Health aside, his production is fine.
For a late season rental, he’d be a perfect fit.

And what did I say earlier???
My first post, first condition, “…if the trade deadline is near…”.

please no....
‘Expensive’ and ‘Dinged-up’ are two words that should never be associated with future Rangers’ signing. If we’re looking for a center, why not go with ‘familiar’ and ‘in-desperate-need-of-a-change-of-scenery’… Lecavalier. It would take some trade of salary rangling, but I can’t imagine the Lightning wouldn’t be interested with Vinnie sitting on their checking line.
by RobDiablo44 on Nov 5, 2009 2:37 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
No way to Lecavalier
he signed an 11 year extention with a no trade clause. Do you wanna play him close to 8 mil when hes 38?

give him 3 more months in Tocchet's doghouse...
… and I imagine he’d be willing to waive that clause and talk about some restructuring. Even so, I’d prefer it to an expensive rental of Forsberg.

Restructuring is against the rules of the current CBA.

I’d trade Dubi, Higgins and Rozi for Vinny any day of the week. Tremendous upside on Vinny and he played for torts…..oh plz, plz……..before anyone says no…….just remember you were calling Dubi a tier one center during his holdout and praying for him to sign….I told you so!!!!!!
by earthworm on Nov 5, 2009 3:40 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Anyone would make that trade.
Just remember that getting Vinny also requires giving up McDonagh, Grachev/Anisimov, and a 1st round pick.
by Dave (BSB) on Nov 5, 2009 3:48 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
i wouldnt just to not have another 10 years of the contract. Rozi we can dump hopefully next fall if not at worst it is 2 years, higgins will likely be gone after this year. I would rather keep the 7 mil than have Vinny who in 2 years with all his injuries deal will look worse than Gomez or Drury. Adding prospect would only make it worse.

How about the people that are currently on the team start producing the way every expected them to (Drury, Callahan, Avery, Higgins)

That would definitely help

desperate need of a playmaking center
Prospal has been playing well with Gaborik. The little 5 goals that they scored Gaborik was injured for. They need offensive players but I dont think a playmaking center will do any good when the only person to pass to is Gabby.
by Dekim19 on Nov 5, 2009 6:41 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
IMO
If he is healthy and cheap…why not? Not the worst move we’d ever made (or will make, in this case)
Though, I wouldn’t want to see time taken from a Boyle (not that I am comparing them though. ) He has been a pleasant surprise, since I never heard of him till this season.

this is a no brainer.....
Sign forsberg to a 1 year deal if healthy… The guy makes gaborik a 50 goal scorer guaranteed !!!!! What would we lose if he gets hurt? 700 k and some optimism. The guys a winner and I have faith in the rangers medical staff…. U do this in a heartbeat…. But only after the olympic break.
