Rangers Analysis: With Drury and Dubinsky out, Rangers look for options

As per the tweets of Steve Zipay:

Tortorella: Drury has concussion, Dubinsky probably out for awhile

After last night's hard fought loss, the Rangers lost more than just two points. As you can see above, both Chris Drury and Brandon Dubinsk were injured. Chris Drury will probably be out a week or two with his concussion and if Dubinsky's wrist is broken or fractured (which is most likely) then he will be out for at least 3 weeks depending on the severity.

Adding insult to injury here is that both Drury and Dubinsky are centers, which leaves the Rangers with Vaclav Prospal, Artem Ansisimov and Brian Boyle as the centers. So let's take a look at some moves the Rangers may have to make.

Corey Locke: With 9 goals and 12 assists for 21 points in 14 games Locke is the leading point scorer for the Hartford Wolf Pack. Locke has been pretty brilliant in the AHL before but has seen very little NHL time.

Evgeny Grachev: Like Locke Grachev would be an AHL call-up. Grachev has picked up his play a little in Hartford, scoring 5 goals and 7 assists for 12 points in 15 games. Grachev--arguably one of the most exciting Rangers prospects--might be a good candidate to replace the injured centers as well. Ranger fans are dying to see this kid in the NHL and he may get a legitimate shot here.

Peter Forsberg: A lot of you were down on Forsberg as soon as the story that the Rangers were scouting him hit the fan. I don't understand why. Yes, Forsberg makes Marian Gaborik look like the man made from impenetrable steel, but when Forsberg does play he is a monster. Scouts say that his foot is much healthier than it was a year ago, and if the Rangers deem he is good to go then Glen Sather might make a serious move for him, depending on his asking salary.

Those are just three quick options I looked into. Yes, I know that Forsberg is not a center but with Dubinsky out the Rangers are gonna need some set-up guys, and Forsberg would answer that call. The other option is that Sather makes a trade but it's way too early to know what Sather is thinking on that subject.

What moves do you guys think the Rangers should look at? Let us know in the comments! (Please remember the Rangers have just under 700K in cap space. And no Redden and Drury won't be traded.)

Dan Boyle doesn’t play for the Rangers. ;)

Also, Grachev isn’t a center anymore. He hasn’t played center since coming to North America.

A name to put on the list is Brody Dupont, who has been playing center and would be a good option for the limited minutes he’d get on the fourth line. Doesn’t have big numbers, but has been playing well in a defensive role in Hartford and is a responsible, two-way guy.

by Laurie Carr on Nov 8, 2009 10:30 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

i think he meant brian boyle.

i agree dupont is responsible and could be a 4th line center, but is brian boyle good enough to be a 3rd line center for extended periods. Grachev was a center before last year, but I would rather not mess with his head and shift him back and forth especially since he is starting to get into a rhythm in Hartford. Maybe Aves could be the 3rd line center depending on how long dru is going to be down and we call up PAP and maybe Grachev to play wings and give us chances.

I was going to do a list of trade candidates, but instead of doing it here i will just make a fanpost.

well, after what happend last night, i wouldnt be totally against bringing forsberg in, but it would have to be a 1 year deal for minimal numbers, and we’d definitely have to get rid of someone like Voros in order to do it, and his salary really isnt that much to begin with, so it wouldnt clear a ton of space.

I do like how chris higgins is playing as of late, he looks like a man possessed after getting his first couple of goals and is starting to play harder and work more at getting back, i like the fire that tortorella lit under his ass and hes been playing better because of it.

maybe we should get blair betts back, he was good and cheap and he may not be the best point scorer or as big as boyle, he can move the puck and is clutch at blocking shots on the PK which would hold us over while Dubi is injured for a few weeks…i just hope it doesnt take away from his shot which hasnt really been there as of late.

betts?

dont no why the flyers would do that but we would have to trade more since they are in division

The Flyers are undefeated with Betts in the lineup, don’t think he’s coming back.

No way Forsberg is coming here. He’ll cost way to much and the rangers have NO cap space. These places will have to be filled from within. Bring up Paranteau and Grachev.

Uhh

I don’t know whose career you’ve been watching, but Forsberg is most certainly a center.

If the Rangers had some space...

I’d say signing Forsberg (coulda swore he was a center…)might make some sense (tho…I think the whole “how much” thing depends on Pete). Maybe that 700K gets er done? Doubt it….

I think they should bring up a youngin or 2. I don’t think there’s a move worth making that they should look into.

Dubi and Drury out is gonna hurt…its just gonna take someone else stepping up. Kotalik? Avery?

DO WHAT JERRY HAIRSTON DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

rangers hurting ...

it was a filthy cheap shot by that punk glenncross i really don,t care for brashear but we need him in the lineup i think the rangers can,t afford forsberg so the only options are grachev ,parenteau alot of icetime for vinny now .boy this team is starting to get the mets injury hard luck gotta find a way to get by this …

Forsberg

is a center.

He just hasnt played it the last few years.

The NHL will certainly be reviewing the tape of Glencross’ unnecessary and illegal hit on Drury – expect to see him get a several game suspension.

Presuming that Sather’s hat is fresh out of rabbits (not saying it is, just using that as a starting point), I’d guess that they’ll move Vinny Prospal to center the first line, and move either Lisin or Higgins up to the wing. Lisin looked pretty good with those guys in a couple of games, but Higgins would be my call based on how he’s played since scoring – he looks like what we expected him to look like. Move Artie up to center the 2nd Line between Avery and Callahan, put Lisin on the third line left of Boyle and Kotalik. Boyle especially looked good last night with his increased ice time, and he could be a pleasant surprise.
At that point, call up Locke and Parenteau for 4th Line duties with Byers.

The place where Drury will be most missed, I suspect, is the PK – but I doubt that they’ll drop from #1 to #30 in 2 weeks.

Of course, all of this is moot if there actually is a rabbit in that hat – and somehow Sather convinces Forsberg to sign for just under 2mm (remaining cap space plus 1mm when Voros is waived.)

by dbmaven on Nov 8, 2009 2:28 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

why does everyone freak about the forsberg salary. remember it is prorated based on the number of days he is on the roster. even if they signed him today he probably wouldnt play for another 2-3 weeks which would put him at about 150 days on the roster so he could sign for about 2.5 mil w the 750K left and 900K left to pay voros. also if drury is out significantly you get LTIR injury replacement money based on dru’s salary.

Playmakers: Please Apply

New poster, long time lurker. (Like the radio show, by the way!).

Locke would be a nice sub for Dubi – strong playmaker who looks to distribute. Give him a shot and see how he goes. (Knock on wood.)

Parenteau – IMHO – seemed a bit hesitant to act independently, and spent far too much time standing still versus generating offense. Moreover, we’ll need him to kill penalties; not certain he can do that. Related, I’d be willing to give Grachev a go, but he’d likely be another Anisimov type of high skill sans forecheck. If he could finish, that would be another story.

I may stand alone, but this may be the time to give Avery more MIN, see what he can do replacing Drury. Otherwise – echoing Laurie – DuPont is a nice rental.

Last, I concur with Mleetch is seeing no downside to a Forsberg protated salary option. Also, let’s be honest with ourselves: Voros, Brashear and Roszival will not be on this roster indefinitely = more cap room. I also wouldn’t rule out Drury being on the chopping block since he has high trade value.

Please be kind to a n00b poster. :)

i wish drury had high trade value ;)

does anyone know how many concussions Dru has had in his career? with all these head injuries i worry that Dru might have his career cut short ala LaFontaine from cheap shots like that.

That was his 3rd.

I say Bring all three up.... PA Grech and Locke

We not winning too many games right now as it is anyway. Also, all I know is that I saw saw Locke play he looked really really great. He stood out to me immediately, running circles around other players, when I was just trying to look for Grech.

This team needs fire from young guys who are hungry and tough. These old players are holding us down…. Drury, Reddan, Brash, Rozi. Voros ain’t old but after the first three games of the season he sure looks like he could go to. And if torts isn’t going to let avery be avery than avery could go to. There’s a reason he’s not making an impact. Half the time I don’t even know when he’s on the ice because he’s a ghost. I may be the only one here but I was irrate after last nights game. Good effort my ass. Not only did they blindslide our captian they were pushing our guys around before the game even started. Torts should have been screaming for the 5 min major or retribution. If this keeps up, Hank will surely be next.

by Toad McGee on Nov 8, 2009 5:48 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

completely agree.

and avery can be great if you let him be himself which torts isnt letting him do..

the vets are holding us down big time.

instead od drury redden and rozi we could have 3 allstars

FORSBERG!!!!!!

This could be a steal guys!!!!! If he is finally healthy he could have a huge effect on this lineup. I say they explore the possibilty and sign him. Plus hes a swede and could take less to play with Hank!!! I say a 1 mill dollar deal and try to move a lower tier player for cap rom.

by RangerFan5 on Nov 8, 2009 6:45 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

Maybe

we can get rid of the Goddamn Voros!!!!

Rangers FTW!

And Rosi and Redden and Brasher and…

by goodieNY on Nov 8, 2009 8:53 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Voros can go to the minors and if Brashear isnt going to play to do his job and fight after what happened last night might as well trade or dump him in the minors too and find out what we have in young players like byers for our 4th line.

by mleetch352 on Nov 8, 2009 7:25 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Zip tweeted that a source told him Dubi has a broken hand and is out 3 weeks.

That seems light on the expectation of missed time because the bone healing should take that long and that says nothing about ability to do things like take faceoffs, but let’s hope the guess is right.

listen……… Reddens contract sux but he is playing relatively well. I really watched Rozival in Calgary…..Wow…what happened to him. He looked atrocious. Really awkward and out of position. He was a good player 2 seasons ago.

Retribution (or lack thereof)

Hey guys, have enjoyed the radioshow and the blog alot, keep up the great work.

There’s no way that Glencross should have been able to leave the ice with his teeth intact. Someone, I don’t care who it was, should have knocked his teeth out.

I have to agree with Pauly D and Mouth on this; there aren’t enough guys willing to stand up for each other, and let’s just hope Hank doesn’t continue to get targeted. These guys have to fight for each other and stand up for each other. You don’t let the other team take out your Captain with a cheap shot without taking out his teeth.

Something else we forgot to mention..

They were messing with and pushing Gaborik that whole game (at the net after every whistle) and not once did I see anyone really do anything. He was actually there defending himself.

This team is starting to remind me of last years team who spent their off nights off probably at wine-tasting events and art shows lolly-gagging around the city and living the life. They were acting very soft last game. I think Cally was the only one to drop a glove and that was by accident during a play.

Even torts looked sleepy that game like he was taking naps between periods. Where’d his fire go we were promised? I’d rather he gets suspended here and there if that fires up his team. The failure that game came from the top down. And I wish we had someone like tootoo. He beats guys silly and knocks them across ice with hits, and has to be pretty close to Domi in size. No fear whatsoever. Avery used to have have that.
