Rangers News: UPDATE: Gilroy, Johnson down, Matt Zaba recalled from Hartford

UPDATE [Note by Jim Schmiedeberg, 12/10/09 1:23 PM EST The Rangers have also announced that Chad Johnson has been sent down, and Matt Zaba has been recalled from Hartford. I believe the Wolfpack are playing tomorrow night, I think this is so Johnson can start there.]

As per the tweets of Andrew Gross (@Agrossrecord):

Somewhat of a surprise: #NYRangerskeep Ilkka Heikkinen, send Hobey Baker winner Matt Gilroy to Hartford (AHL).

I can't say I saw this coming. Remember that because of Gilroys situation (being 25 without playing an NHL game before he signed his contract) he is not subject to waivers.

Regardless this move is simply a head-scratcher unless you look at it from a team perspective not a player perspective (more on that below). I though that Matt Gilroy was playing solid hockey and was getting better as time went on. Although he gave up the game winner last night I thought he played a pretty good game.

While we all wanted to see Ilkka Heikkinen kept with the big club I don't think we wanted to see it happen at the expense of Gilroy. And although Heikkinen brings a lot  to the table I don't think he was playing better than Gilroy was.

Now before you rip Glen Sather's head off think about this: Matt Gilroy is a 1.75 million dollar cap hit where Heikkinen is just under 600K, this move gives the Rangers 1.15 million dollars in cap space to work with. Perhaps this is more of a move to make cap space because a trade is brewing. This is the most logical reasoning in my head right now and if this is the case it actually makes sense. Thoughts?

really torts and sather?

you send down a kid whose been learning and playing hard, one of the few players the garden faithful and ranger rans appreciate and like this year, one of the few playing with HEART, and you keep ROZI up?!?! torts is on my sh*tlist big time, he is a hypocritical prick who picks and chooses who he holds accountable…disgusting move, i cannot believe this

and if this was about clearing cap space for a trade, i can think of a guy who if he was sent down who would give us, say, 5 MIL in cap space…

They’re not gonna pay Rozsival 5 million to play in the AHL, it’s not going to happen, not to mention waiving a huge contract just a season and a half into the deal would create possible riffs with the players union in an uncertain labor future.

You're right Joe

It has to be a cap move to clear up room for Dubinsky to come back. I don’t know that a trade is imminent but it would seem there is definitely no room for Voros so they’ll probably unload him and another forward to clear up the log jam a bit.

I mean, that’s the logical explanation, and b/c of the waivers issue, it’s easier to send his money down than Rozi’s.

Yeah, you’re right, that makes sense. Although I hate to see Gilroy go. Good thing is that he will probably dominate in Hartford and when he comes to the big club eventually, he will play with renewed confidence.

This is a very good move for the Rangers. Gilroy has been unimpressive and carries a big cap hit for someone of his experience level. Heikkinen is more sound defensively and I look forward to seeing him get more playing time.

I will also bet the farm that they sent Gilroy down to learn how to play forward again. I can foresee him as the top line left winger this team has been missing this season.

by Greg Caggiano on Dec 10, 2009 12:27 PM EST reply actions

I dunno if I'd bet the farm I don't own

But that’s an interesting theory. Given the sea of defenseman in the system, using Gilroy as a forward could be a good future alternative. His speed would be a pretty big asset. If nothing else, being a D/F hybrid gives the team a lot of flexibility.

I definitely don’t agree with “unimpressive” though. Stepping right into the NHL from college and not only holding his own but playing at a decent level is pretty darn impressive to me.

its not that its out of the box Jim, he made it to the NHL as a defenseman. Granted he has an offensive upside as well as a history at forward, but whos to say hes going hes the same caliber as he is on offense as he is on defense

I m sure this is a temporary move...

…and Gilroy will be back with the Rangers. I know that this is the way things work here and they won’t send Rozsival down, but they should. That move would make more sense than sending gilroy to Hartford

by MattPwrcf1 on Dec 10, 2009 12:54 PM EST reply actions

What message does this actually send to Gilroy?

If this is a cap move to make a deal, then fine: ONLY if they (management) properly tell Gilroy what is going on and that he being sent down doesn’t reflect his play.

If this is a move because of what happened in overtime yesterday, then F*ck management. Hey, lets send down MDZ and AA while we’re at it.

He better not be down there for long.

And another thing. If the Rangers lose their next game, I want Torts fired. Take a lesson from Philly and do it.

unfortunately we have 0 say in what the Rangers do. I’m gonna say it and stress this again, Torts system is a PRE lockout system that won him the cup. The red line is what allowed his defense to be successful. 5 men in the picture and play high along the redline. Since there were no homerun passes, this was EXTREMELY effective. Hes a good coach based on his merits, but doesn’t seem like a fit right now for this team.

by Dougee on Dec 10, 2009 1:00 PM EST up reply actions

The Flyers fired their coach after 3 years of incompetence, and so far it hasn’t exactly panned out…firing Tortorella 50 games into his tenure is premature and quite frankly retarded, it’s not his fault this team is made of players who aren’t particularly interested in playing well or incapable of it.

C'mon people, relax.....

I understand the emotional nature of sending a fan favorite down but my god, this is not the end of the world for either the Rangers or Gilroy.

For one, it’s quite possible Heikkenen is better fit for the current team since he’s a much more physical defenseman than Gilroy, and it’s not like he has no offensive side either. It may not be long before he wins people over. It’s not like we replaced Gilroy with a Rozsival clone here.

For two, Gilroy’s cap hit is more than Girardi, Prospal, and basically as much as Lisin+MDZ combined. With the team strapped for cap room (spare me the Sather bashing for a second) and the fact he doesn’t have to pass through waivers, Gilroy is the best choice to be sent down for the time being. I highly doubt this was any indictment on his play.

For three, we have no idea how long this move is for. It could quite easily be temporary as the team finds options to clear up some glaring needs.

We just can’t keep reacting like somebody shot our dogs every time something happens to this team. New York is a “now now now now” town but this is not a “now now now now” league.

Teach him the wonders of AHL hockey and get him a Wolfpack Jersey. One day he’ll grow up to be a world renowned NHL scout because of his in-depth knowledge of minor-league hockey at such a young age. He’ll then take various promotions such as director of player-personnel and eventually become the GM of the Rangers, leading the team to break Montreal’s record of 5 straight Cups.

So clearly, the wheels of been set in motion to make your son famous. Thus, you should thank Mr. Sather.

I disagree

The tying goal is more of an issue with Cally who was just standing there and watching, or the others in the scrum, and not so much Gilroy. On the last play, he made a rookie mistake by assuming he could get enough speed and space on the quick breakout by Byf. I didn’t realize big Byf was that quick, and my guess is he didn’t either. Either way he turned too late and was caught.

But I hardly think sending him down to slower play is the answer as to what will bring him along. And it totally sends the wrong message.

Now, my biggest issue with the D is that they’ve forgotten how to play physical. Every one. Not sure Gilroy ever knew how, but Del Zotto is the only one showing promise that way but only on the boards, and not between the circles. Maybe they liked Heikkinen’s physical play the other night. Also get rid of Brashear. I am sympathic to his personal story, but I’d rather have a crasher like Orr again than a pure fighter.

by Openroadfun on Dec 10, 2009 2:52 PM EST up reply actions

If one of the D men, or Boyle/Cally

Just starts clearing those guys out of the front, that goal doesn’t get scored. And he gave up way too early on that OT goal. Take a penalty, throw your stick, just do something. Gabby got back and he was in front of Gilroy by quite a bit.

by WalkerNYRanger on Dec 10, 2009 3:01 PM EST up reply actions

AGREE Agree agree

Poti, errr I mean Malik…Dammit, I mean Boyle let Hossa stand at the top of the crease for several seconds and did nothing about it. The tying goal goes on Boyle’s shoulders. Why do we continually sign guys with good size and absolutely no ability to use it??? Isn’t it obvious if they don’t have speed, don’t have great hands or don’t play physical they are nothing more than BIG wastes of space?

What’s really funny about all this complaining and “the sky is falling!” complaints is that the Rangers have a ridiculously easy stretch coming up for the rest of the month into January, including 3 games against Carolina and the Islanders. This mediocre heartless squad could easily play .600 hockey during this stretch and put themselves well into the playoff picture and the parity ridden East without even playing much better than they are now.

And it’s probably impossible to make a trade within the rivalry, but I’d like to see them go grab Biron from the Isles. 1.4m and a UFA makes him a perfect plug in, he’s a veteran which is what Tortorella would prefer.

He should be available shortly with the 15yr golden goalie no longer claiming disability. I don’t know how many other veteran backups are around that can be had so easily.

but who would we give them for a goaltender?? I really feel like if were going to trade for anybody it would be for a top 6 forward who could net a few.

wouldn't cost much

A draft pick or a lesser prospect should do the trick. They’re not going to carry 3 goalies so they’ll take whatever most likely.

Kind of shocked by the gilroy thing, it seems like it’s a cap move, but i can only fear there is a trade coming. Personally as the team stands now i would package prospal with one of our over paid players and move them… Prospal has a great value right now and if we can find a way some how to move a big contract with prospal, it would be a great benefit. Although it would leave us a void, i think it’s time realize we need to rebuild. Use the space gain both in cap and in the lines to fill in with our young players at hartford such as Locke and Grachev, yes i know Grachev hasn’t hit his stride blah blah blah, but this team is going no where really fast. We have one scorer, Grachev would be a great 2nd line offensive threat. Give Me Dubinsky on the first line with Higgins and Gaborik, Grachev, Anisimov and Lisin on our 2nd line and the second line was one that really clicked during the preseason. Cally Drury and Avery as our 3rd line, trash brashear and trash voros and give me Locke Boyle and byers as a fourth line. Let the young guys play…

by Tophubufu on Dec 10, 2009 2:47 PM EST reply actions

As much...

as I like Prospal he is probably one of if not the only movable parts. It just sux. He’s playing great hockey with Gabby and at a bargain of a price. It would be a shame to loose him.

I’d also say scrap Boyle and roll with PA on your 4th line.

by Mike_from_NNJ on Dec 10, 2009 3:35 PM EST up reply actions

I like vinny too

I really think he’s captain material,I don’t want to lose him. Maybe the pressure on the “clutch” man is too much, game after game, you see vinny talking, leading by example and playing like a professional.

Boyle has been a key part of the 2nd PK unit – and has done well in that role. He’d also score more if he got the ice time. I did like last night’s line of Boyle/Christensen/Parenteau – even with Boyle playing the wing instead of center (and Christensen did nicely on face-offs).

blackhawks review

After watching that game that was dominated by the hawks and only close because of
the king I did not see any puck control. Drury and redden hurt the team they are not ready to play. The a line should be Gaborick prospal and avery.

too many pp given torts better get them tuned while we have some easy games in dec.

I don’t think it’s the end of the world although I’m upset as much as the next guy, and I also do not believe that a hard working player needs to be sent down. it’s unfortunate that when other players play bad, the other guys or bottom of “totem pole” guys get the shit end of the stick. i noticed th0at rozival and drury have trouble moving the puck up, they just clear it to the neutral zone for the other team to pick it up. I’m annoyed by what’s going on

Gilroy

I hate to see him go down. I fear there is a bad trade in our future. I also wish Lisen saw more ice time. He’s got some speed and would love to see Torts motivate him instead of move him out.

I’m not against giving up a Gilroy if we can package him with Drury or Redden and get rid of that cap space.

honestly its time to rebuild..

i wish they could just get rid of. drury redden roszival kotalik brashear and voros. (24 mil)

bring up locke byers grachev gilroy and sangs

prospal dubinsky gaborik
avery anisimov parenteau
lisin locke grachev
byers christensen boyle

staal mdz

I agree

if we have to suck up a horrible season, for a future, its a no brainer. This having potential, then scratching all kinds of commitment is getting old.Piecing together a team every year just for a couple hot streaks isnt cutting it.
We need to keep our young core and be patient and address the glaring problems we have. It really starts with slats at this point, yes gabby was a great move, but brashear, redden and rosi have to be addressed, theres no getting around it

captain anyone?

Just thinking about this – anyone else agree that we’ve pretty much sucked since about the time Leetch became captain. And Drury, another “soft-spoken leader” and we’ve got much the same result. We’re all wondering why Torts seems to have lost his legendary fire – perhaps its the lack of a fiery captain to keep guys accountable?

I don’t know wtf – but I just despise Drury and all his lame-ass post-game quotes. Totally clueless guy. And worse than Leetch, he doesn’t do shit on the ice. Soft-spoken / soft player.

we could have a captain that gets in his teammate’s faces and points out their mistakes. I feel like the locker room hast a “I don’t want to hurt your feelings” type of character, even with Torts as coach. Now don’t take my word for it because I am not in the locker room on a regular basis, but that is just how it appears to me.

WOW

I love all the crap drury takes. He constantly blocks shots right in his ankle. Do you change the game and not notice these awesome defensive plays hes making. Its not his fault sathers overpaid him would you turn down at least two million more just because you’re not amazing. Drury brings a defensive center to the table and one that is needed. His offensive game clearly needs to pick up. Buffalo was a force the season before he came to the rangers hence his 69 point performance sadly there was no way that was going to continue and his numbers since coming to the rangers have only gone down by 10 points which to me is amazing considering we had nowhere near the offense buffalo did in there 06-07 season. So don’t hate on drury and call him “soft” when he is sacrificing his body game in game out.

MAJOR CHANGE TIME

I think its obvious that something is gonna happen. Those of you that think MDZ and Gilroy are the future are right but you need to look at past games. In the last 5 before this MDZ was a minus. Gilroy is a good offensive force one that is desperately needed but if anything a major trade is about to occur. I know how many replies this will get after I say what I think is gonna happen but dubi is gone in my opinion. A lot of teams have shown interest and with Gaborik getting shut down a second force needs to come one that is obviously not on our team already. By sending Gilroy down we free up cap space and his game will only get better when hes back. By getting rid of dubinsky although a loss will occur a great gain could come out of it. Such as getting rid of rozi or redden and bringing in an offensive force that will allow secondary scoring to occur on a game to game basis. This could be a season changing trade and not one of the minor ones Sathers does that only succeeds for awhile. This could bring more of our wolfpack up giving them an opportunity but also bring an allstar to a team that desperately needs more than one

by NYR its our time on Dec 10, 2009 6:07 PM EST reply actions

Trading away a player like Dubi for a scorer that will effective for one, maybe two seasons is exactly the reason why the Rangers suck.

by goodieNY on Dec 10, 2009 6:25 PM EST up reply actions

yea its true but thats why its gonna be a big package so we can get a successful scorer and resign him. In the past sathers made really bad moves that are costing us till this day but signing gaborik was a sign that the upcoming future is bright and a major move that’ll benefit us for a few years is bound to happen.

Can we call Sather "Omar"?

This should be a year to build chemistry, develop youth, and build a TEAM. However you look at it, Gilroy was not the problem. And if Don Maloney aka Sather’s bitch won’t take Roszival or Redden then NO ONE will…not even Burke. So send em down immediately and get the kids playing. It’s not hard to figure out the problems on the blue line and quite frankly if we are going to lose it may as well be with Gilroy, MDZ, Ilkka, and Sanguinetti. What IS hard to figure out is why some of our “emerging” forwards appear so inept. Is it the system? Is it Torts? Is it the crappy MSG ice? I thought that getting rid of Gomez would have set the kids free. But they are stuck in the rut. And as much as I love Drury (and hate his contract) he is not emerging as the leader that we thought we were getting.
