Goaltending issue ahead for Rangers
Beginning Monday night, the Rangers will play a stretch of four games in six nights, including back to back games against the Islanders, Wednesday at the Garden, and Thursday out at the Mausoleum.
With Stephen Valiquette banished to Hartford and playing poorly there, the Rangers have a goaltending issue looming for next week. Despite the comments of John Tortorella to the contrary, it looks like he may have no choice but to start a rookie goaltender next week.
Chad Johnson, who performed well in training camp, was summoned from Hartford when Valiquette was vanquished, but was sent back down, presumably to get a start down in Hartford. Matt Zaba was called up to replace Johnson, but his time with the Rangers is most certainly temporary.
So with the glut of games next week, it will be interesting to see what the Rangers do. Best guess is Henrik Lundqvist will start Monday, then again Wednesday at home against the Islanders, then Chad Johnson makes his first NHL start Thursday night in Uniondale against the Islanders. Then Henrik can come back Saturday against Philadelphia.
This is assuming the Rangers don't use that cap space they cleared when they sent Gilroy down to pick up a veteran goalkeeper. Although let's face it, the Rangers rarely do what we think they will do, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see Valiquette summoned from Hartford to make a start next week either.

If you're going to start a rookie
Wouldn’t you prefer to do it at home? I tend to think Johnson would start Wednesday at home against the Isles and Henrik Thursday.

I’m thinking this just breaks up the week better for Hank if you start him Wednesday. Plus, MSG, Nassau Coliseum, does it really matter, both home games in my mind

True.....
But either game would break up the week. Either you have Hank go:
Sat, Mon, Thurs, Sat
or
Sat, Mon, Wed, Sat.
Sitting Wednesday makes slightly more sense I think, but I guess it doesn’t make a difference if you go 2,3,2 or 2,2,3 with the days rest.

The other thing I was thinking is that Saturday’s game is an afternoon game, so if Hank plays Thursday night, then he is really only getting a day and a half rest for that one.
It’s really 6 in one, half dozen in the other, but when you weigh it all out to me it makes a little more sense to give Johnson the start on Long Island.
One more little adendum, he Rangers usually have a propensity to start backups away from MSG, Valiquette has only played 10 games at MSG his entire Ranger career, as opposed to 24 on the road.

Yeah, I don’t know if the six hours makes a big deal, but it couldn’t hurt

the problem i see is that this week there are no weaker teams to feel safe with a rookie goalie in the net…but in order to keep henrik fresh they need to give zaba, johnson, or whoever it is to start most likely the second game of the home at home

We fall back on Lundy
falling back on Lundqvist is something we always do but our D made efforts when Vally would go in…I can see this as a straight up challenge to our Dmen to step it up.

What's a "step up"
from abysmal?
Horrendous?
Mediocre?
The Rangers problems begin and end on the blue line, and until some major personnel changes are made, I suspect that “Mediocre” is the best we’re going to get.

db, if you’re going to be bad, be really bad, don’t be mediocre

You’re absolutely right with that. We have no substantial backup to rely on because of this. I do think we try harder with the backups but as you pointed out, it will just be mediocre at best.

Based on some of the defensive play we’ve seen, I’d have to say that certain Rangers have taken that stance to heart…..

Goaltending issue
Do you think Valiquette is really the problem? I think there are some messages being sent with these moves…nothing more. Valiquette and Gilroy are scapegoats right now.

I thought he went down to get a game in to prepare for the upcomming stint. There is no question he is really struggling down in Hartford and that is a problem.
I have lots of questions why Gilroy is down. I’m sure he’ll do great in Hartford.
