Rangers Recap: Blueshirts Fight Hard, Fall Short of Thrashers in SO, 3-2

Despite registering a season high 48 shots on goal against the Thrashers, the Rangers were once again unable to convert on prime scoring chances, including three or more breakaways, and ended up falling to Atlanta 3-2 in the shootout. At the same time, the effort was there and the Blueshirts poured everything they had into this game. In fact, if New York does not allow that shorthanded goal to Colby Armstrong in the third period, they win that game 2-1, but unfortunately that is not the way it went down.

In the first period, the Rangers came out and outshot the Thrashers 16-6, yet found themselves trailing due to a powerplay goal by Slava Kozlov when he launched a slapper off the far post and past Lundqvist to give the Thrashers a 1-0 lead. It stayed that way until Michael Del Zotto made a remarkable pass from behind his own goal-line to lead Ryan Callahan on the breakaway 17 minutes into the second period. Callahan made his usual backhand-forehand deke to beat goaltender Jonas Hedberg low. This powerplay tally was Ryan’s seventh goal on the season and fourth goal in his last eight games. Good to see that he is finally awakening and emerging as a secondary goal scorer on this team.

In the third stanza, Colby Armstrong capitalized on a fortuitous bounce off of the boards which eluded Del Zotto and ended up on his tape. Armstrong roofed a wrister over the shoulder of Lundqvist to regain the lead for Atlanta. That did not last long, however, as almost exactly a minute later Del Zotto wowed us with his passing abilities, when he fed Marian Gaborik for the one-timer goal which was Marian’s 23rd on the season (leads NHL in goals).

This was followed by a 5 on 3 powerplay opportunity for the Thrashers when both Girardi and Staal went to the box at a crucial time. Thankfully, Henrik Lundqvist lead the Blueshirts to a tremendous kill which saw Hank on his hands and knees throwing his body around to make saves. No goals in overtime, so we would go to the shootout where Kovalchuk and Kozlov scored, and Gaborik and Kotalik did not.

Brandon Dubinsky, returning from his broken hand injury suffered on November 7th, was one of the better players for the Rangers out there tonight. I, personally, expected him to be slow and a little hesitant, but he sure proved me wrong. He skated like mad, he was fantastic on the forecheck, and even threw hits when he had the chance. Dubinsky finished the night with 24:06 of ice-time and did not get a shot on goal in that span.

Star-divide

Chris Higgins and Ryan Callahan are the two other players who I thought played a very similar game to Dubinsky’s. By that I mean the effort was there, they skated, and created scoring chances. No, Higgins was unable to bury any of those golden opportunities, but the fact that he is getting there and getting shots is a good sign, and the goals will eventually come. Callahan is back to old form in that he is everywhere on the ice and scoring goals, much like last season. I am extremely pleased with his game as of late.

Marian Gaborik was also a difference maker tonight, just as he is in almost every game he plays in. Gabs received a total of 28 minutes and 19 seconds of ice-time, which is unbelievable for any player on the team, let alone a forward. I do not think you can really question his health status when he is able to keep the motor running for extended periods of time in fast-pace contests like he did at MSG in this one.

Sean Avery and Vinny Prospal also had their chances in this game but obviously did not put them in the net. Prospal continues to amaze me with the way he can find passing lanes and the same goes for Avery when he is able to attract four players to him almost every time he even approaches the crease. Sean was in the middle of everything tonight.

The defense, I thought, played very well as a whole, but the two individual performances that I took notice of were that of Mike Del Zotto and Michal Rozsival. Not for their defensive effort, but rather for their passing percentage and execution. While Rozy’s passes may not have been converted for goals, they were certainly effective and there were a few of them. Same thing for Del Zotto, who created both Ranger goals in this one. Staal and Girardi were also very strong in their own zone shutting down the high-flying Thrashers.

Henrik Lundqvist was sharp, especially when he had to come up big during the third period penalty kill, but was out-waited by Kovalchuk, which was a marvelous goal, and simply beat by Kozlov in the shootout. It should not have gotten to that point, though, as the team needs to score more than two goals when you record a season high 48 shots on goal. As Callahan said in his postgame interview, nine out of ten times you will win the game with shot totals like that, and tonight was the odd minority.

I believe that there is no better time for a home and home with the Islanders to approach the Rangers at this point. The Isles will force them to do everything they did in tonight’s tilt and more, and if we can walk away victorious in both, you better believe the confidence level will pick up greatly. That home and home will begin on Wednesday at Madison Square Garden.

POST-GAME QUOTES

John Tortorella on tonight's game...

"Other than six or seven minutes at the beginning of that second period, I thought we played a good hockey game.  We just have to keep on trying to build on it.  We have to get over the hump of that second goal.  We had our chances to score our third one but we didn't get it done.  We have a lot of good things to build off of."

Henrik Lundqvist on tonight's game...

"I don't think it matters who we are playing right now.  We have to see every game as an opportunity for us to turn this around.  We have to keep pushing each other to have the energy that you need to win a hockey game.  You can't walk around and feel sorry for yourself.  All of the guys have to work together."

Chris Drury on tonight's game...

"We've got to keep doing the right things, keep playing like we're playing.  48 shots and I think we got 38 last game - if we keep getting over 30 shots something's going to give here."

He has, but in this instance, he maybe had to make six, seven good saves out of the 46 he made. The Rangers throw too many pucks in from the periphery and made it quite easy for Moose to see them and stop them.

yes...

credit him, of course.

But I saw far too many times the puck being shot right at him.

Was it good position?

Or was it the NYR being the NYR again?

We just don't have it

in us to get the pucks in the net………….It’s sad to think that we were still in 1st place at this point last year with a team considerably less talented. And if i remember correctly we had the same problem last year as well, just couldn’t get the pucks in the net. All the guys that played with some kind of heart last year are either gone or still can’t find their game. If we’re this bad now, wait until after the Olympics when Hank and Gabby are beat from those games…….then we’ll really be dead.

aren’t we just 4 or 5 points out of a playoff spot? the maple leafs started the season going 0-7, didn’t they? i really like kabarle and stajan on my fantasy team 2 months later.

i hate to sound like torts but hockey is a game of surges nowadays. there was some heart to the teams game tonight. it wasn’t that bad, and we got a point.

actually it is 2. montreal is 8th w 33. on the flip side we are tied with a boatload of teams for the 2nd fewest points in the league. we will find out which direction this team wants to go in the next 9 as 8 (3 carolina, 3 islanders, 2 flyers) are with teams that are tied with us or behind us in point and florida is up 2. So I would postulate that by Jan 3 we will know as it will be the 1/2 way point of the year and this has to be the easiest stretch for us to control destiny.

Rebounds in front of the net and breakaways are two totally different things. He had at least two in this game.

Did anybody notice...

that Dan G was getting tons of ice time last night? Showcasing him for a trade? I just get this feeling that fat slats is going to go into panic mode and start trading young talent for bums. And after that don’t work and we finnish last this year and he gets fired, we will be left with a mess that will take 5 years to correct (see the Knicks). I hope I’m wrong, but I smell it coming.

I m ok with trading Girardi, because we have other young good dman who can replace him. Those young dman will also be cheaper than what Girardi will ask for in his new contract. I also don’t think we will re-sign Girardi this off season, so might as well trade him and get something in return, like a forward who can actually put the puck in the net

Anyone remember when Higgins and Dubinsky has the 2-0 at the end of the game

But instead of spreading out to split the goalie (Dubinsky tried to) Higgins skated to the middle of the net and tried to go 5 hole. It sucked. Yeah he is snake bit but my God he needs to come out of it eventually. He is hurting this team big time

Lecavalier also hates Tortorella, so between that and the contract, he would probably come to the Rangers and score 5 goals in 40 games.

exactly…..We do need a 1st line center, but Lecavalier is not the answer.
I m also pretty sure most players hate Torts, he seems like a bully and and a d***head (sorry for the language). Players deal with him because they have to and even though he is an ass he can still make the players better and make them play to their potential. Although we havent seen much evidence of this with our team this year

by MattPwrcf1 on Dec 15, 2009 9:28 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

the answer to a first line center is finish w the 1 or 2 pick and pick Tyler Seguin.

by mleetch352 on Dec 15, 2009 11:56 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Who are the the top picks? Hall, Seguin… Also I was trying to figure out if there is any difference between the OHL, QMJHL, WHL quality wise? Are better players coming out of the OHL for instance? I guess I could just look and see who keeps winning the CHL championship….but that would take work, and I just want to see how smart you guys are! ha!

mynhldraft.com is a good site to check out

also you would have to say that the OHL and QMJHL are the best of that group (they are also very high scoring leagues) and that the WHL is good but those players are usually younger and harder to gauge.

My Rant...

Justmy thoughts… In no real order.

Higgens and Avery can’t finish. Higgens has to be better but I don’t think he is that natural goal scorer. Avery should be better, but he is by no means a great natural scorer. He brings some grit that we need and has been improving.

The line changing is getting ridiculous. I don’t think this is effective coaching. This Torts "I go with my gut" isn’t working… stop trusting it, you might just have gas.

I think Lisen’s could be an asset. I do think he lost his passion. In the interview during the first intermission last night he seemed like a kid with no soul. Maybe he’s a problem or maybe he is a product of the John Tortorella’s High Motivation Hockey system. I have herd about Lisen’s reputation, but I’m not sold on Tort’s motivational skills.

I think Duby will be a big help now that he is back. And while he may not be a great first line center, this is far from our biggest problem. If AA could learn to win face-offs he could take Drury’s spot on the 2nd line. Drury is only good on the PK.

Kotalic is a problem when he’s not on the PP. He gives up way to many pucks. He doesn’t get to the net and his shot isn’t accurate enough. Have Lisen take his spot on the 3rd line… And leave him there for a while.

Ok… now Torts. I’m assuming he likes his job and wants to keep it. However he is more easily moved then Drury, Redden, and Rosizal who are going nowhere. He’s not in a good position. I think he is afraid of pissing off the veteran players, and especially these long term contracts, that he very likely will have to live with, if he keeps his job. So he’s bullying the rookies. That is just the way it looks to me. I don’t think you motivate any of the players this way… if anything it divides them. Maybe if our captain stood up and called the team and Torts out on this, they could somehow gel together. I don’t see this happening though.

I’m hoping we forget any trade that does not involve unloading one of our big contracts. That is the only way I’d give up on any of our youth. Even for a Goalie. Give Chad a chance. If we continue to slide get rid of Gerardi for a first round draft pick. We won’t sign him next year anyway. After that forget it!

This team has enough talent to be a playoff team. They need motivation and coaching. It falls on Torts and the Captain. No trade is going to make this a cup team. So make it with this team that you have and work towards the future. I would love a scoring winger, a good 2 way center and a hard nosed veteran defender who can clear people out of the crease. What would it cost us though? There are too many holes to fill!

My prediction is that if we don’t pick it up by the end of this week the team will get worse. I fear that will spawn bad trades that will make our future even dimmer.

Damn you Glen Sather, Damn you!

what about

I’d hate to loose Sangs…just think what we could do with all these offensive D men… desides leaving Hank high and dry… how about Potter, Sauer? Does it have to be a first round pick? Dubi and Cally aren’t first rounders. 2nd and 3rd round right? They are proven somewhat I guess. He could offer picks… This is just a terrible spot to be in… Here I am thinking that in the next few years we could actually have something with some of our home grown talent and Sather is going to trade it all away and for what?

by fromthe51hate on Dec 15, 2009 2:25 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Sangs is just a part of it

They have a ton of depth at defense in the system and since only 6 d-men can play at any given time, it did stand to reason that if the Rangers were going to make trades it would be from a position of depth.

So Sanguinetti, Potter, and Sauer are all certainly fair game, as is Girardi who will have some value.

Trading one or two defenseman is not “trading it all away.”

I ment parting with more than just Sangs… i.e. trading Sangs, Callahan, Staal, Girardi and Dubi… I just like everyone else don’t want to see Sather trade a bunch of these guys. I however don’t see Girardi coming back.

by fromthe51hate on Dec 15, 2009 3:14 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Right, Girardi’s not coming back most likely so trading him makes a ton of sense.

And again, every time Dubi or Cally gets mentioned in a rumor the talks stall (not Staal) and nothing happens, again see Heatley, Dany.

Short of Malkin or Ovechkin coming back, I don’t see 17, 18 or 24 going anywhere.

Yea Sather has done some crappy things. But one thing is apparent we are keep Dubi, Cally, and Staal at all costs. Dont be surprised if Girardi, Sanguinetti, Potter, Sauer, and a 2nd or 3rd rounder or even a 1st(for some real good stuff) are gone. but our true core of the team isnt going anywhere. Pauly actually brings up a good point on Sanguinetti

The Rangers have so many D prospects that it makes sense to unload some of them. Lets be honest here Sanguinetti is no MDZ and is playing well enough to earn some respect around the league. As a result unloading Redden or Rozsival with Sanguinetti allows the Rangers to clear cap “the right way.” (note my quotations please)

Regardless Sanguinetti can also be dangled to get a top flight goal scoring prospect. Offensive Defenseman are high regarded as the toughest prospects to achieve and some teams might we willing to swap a goal scoring winger for a good offensive D man.

Big 3 Losers

I’m assuming you mean Drury, Rozival or Redden.
Drury’s not going anywhere, as he’s got a full no-movement clause. That means he’d want out of NY & someone’s gotta take on his payroll & his no-movement contract. Sorry to break it to you, not going to happen.
Wade Redden has a semi-no trade clause, meaning that he can give the Rangers a list of teams he won’t move to. Besides that, he’s one of the worst FA contracts EVER. No team is going to pay this dude $8 mil in a couple of years. Unless the Rangers eat some of his contract (which won’t help the cap to acquire stars that you’d like), then forget about him as well.
Rozi is by far the worst defenceman on this team & there’s no way any team would take him @ $5mil per year. Again, unless we eat the contract (thereby limiting our cap towards making another deal), we’re stuck with him.
I have no idea where you think we’re gonna move ANY of those contracts.

NOW IT'S JUST ABOUT DAMAGE CONTROL

So let’s all hope we do get rid of 2 out of the three (the R&R brothers) but lose a cally and sag’s maybe even arty and only get some prospects in return or maybe a player like matt walker. In the long run it can only help as much as i would hate to lose our young guys it really is the only way out of the mess we are in.Hopefully we will never sign guy’s to crazy long term contracts again…

Odd choice

In Matt Walker. I wouldn’t trade defenseman for more defenseman, so losing Sanguinetti for that doesn’t seem like it would make sense.

Sangs is expendable, Cally and especially AA are not right now. If you want to ship R&R out of town, ship the defense prospects.

It’s the “only way out of the mess we are in”……if you CHOOSE to hit the PANIC button right now.

Before you get your shorts in a knot – I’m not suggesting that this isn’t exactly what will happen.
The history of the franchise over the last decade plus certainly lends itself to that conclusion.

But quite frankly, if you look at the teams that are now considered in the “elite” class – none of them “did the panic thing” – they took their lumps for one (or more) seasons and built up through measured (and reasonable) trades, and the draft. I’d be all for doing some intelligent moves – trying to make a move for a Kovalchuk, for example (although I suspect the price in talent going the other way would be too steep) – and waiting until the offseason (June 15th) buyout period to get rid of dead weight. Or maybe seeing if there’s a desperate taker on the playoff bubble at the trade deadline.

Nothing HAS to be done right now.

We should trade Girardi, because we probably wont resign him in the off season, because all the $$$ will go to Staal. I would hate to see Dan G walk away and we get nothing
