There's a storm front coming

(Billy Joel, "Storm Front")

As I was reading the John Tortorella quotes from last night, that song just kept running through my head. Things are ugly right now, too many underachievers in the lineup, and it sounds like the head coach has finally had enough.I don't know if you guys were able to see them on MSG, somehow I doubt it, but I caught them on TSN in between periods of the Ducks-Nucks game.

Check out the quotes, courtesy of Ranger Rants:

On the Islanders first goal being a "dirty" goal, one gotten simply by skating hard to the net:

"That we don’t get. There’s horse*$)#@! coverage around the corners, he just brings it around the net. It’s a fluky goal. But we don’t get them."

What’s the remedy for the way the team started in the first period:

"What is the remedy? I don’t know how you want me to answer that."
What do you think you need to do: "Play ^#(^&@ harder."
As the coach, what do you need to do: "That’ll be something we’ll decide before tomorrow’s game."

More after the jump.....

Star-divide

Is this group capable of figuring it out as constituted:

"I’ll tell you right now, the thing that’s unacceptable about tonight’s game and we’re trying to stay positive around here, trying to work our way through it, but when we play like ^*^#@ like that for 20 minutes in a game like this in a back-to-back situation, it’s unacceptable. I’m not even going back as far as a month and are we capable. It’s simply unacceptable. There has to be something done and we’ll see along the way before tomorrow night’s game. We’ll see where we go with them. It’s just simply unacceptable how we started that game. I wish I could give you a ($@#*%# explanation about it. I can’t.

If you click the link above for Ranger Rants, there are also quotes from the players, but its pretty much the standard "we need to be mentally tougher", and "we need to set the pace" stuff we've heard for a month.

TSN has video of some of the Torts stuff on their NHL page.

So will we see changes tonight? What changes will they be? Bobby Sanguinetti is waiting in the wings, will he take Rozsival's spot in the lineup? Are undeserving forwards still going to be given bulks of ice time? I guess we will find out as the day goes on.

Finally,

So will we see changes tonight? What changes will they be? Bobby Sanguinetti is waiting in the wings, will he take Rozsival’s spot in the lineup?

Fat chance. He’s apparently our go to guy when it comes to empty net situations where we desperately need to fail at keeping the puck in at the blue line.

Are undeserving forwards still going to be given bulks of ice time?

As much as the undeserving defenseman.

The big move tonight will be to put Christensen in the lineup and bench Boyle or something similarily incomprehensible as a ‘major change.’

I’m not optimistic about anything other than Chad Johnson’s NHL debut and the team maybe giving an effort to protect the kid.

Well – what would you do?

My suggestions:
Bench Rozsival. Play Sanguinetti. Spread the minutes out amongst the d-men more evenly. You can handle it if a rookie f**’s up – rookie errors are “expected”.

Move Avery back to 1st line with Dubinsky/Gaborik.
Put Anisimov on 2nd line with Prospal and Callahan
3rd line Higgins – Christensen – Lisin
4th line – Brashear – Boyle – Voros
Give the 1st 3 lines relatively even playing time – and play the 4th line at least 10 minutes. They need to at least break a sweat – and maybe HIT some people….

Hmmm.. Guess that means Drury is benched. And so is Kotalik. Maybe benching the Captain will get everyone’s attention….

What I want to see:

Higgins-Dubinsky-Gaborik
Avery-Prospal-Callahan
Drury-Anisimov-Lisin
Boyle-Christensen-Voros

Weighted towards the 1st line and playing 20/12/12/8 breakdown. (assuming 8 minutes of special teams). Drury stays to cover up Anisimov’s faceoffs. Kotalik sits so they’re not tempted to put him on the ice, they can use two of the zillion offensive defenseman on the PP point.

Staal-Sanguinetti
Gilroy-Heikkenen
Girardi-MDZ

Just play all the damn kids and go to work. Send Rozsival down and scratch Redden.

Fantasy world is fun.

G-damn that is impressive.

not bad

i like this lineup, but I put Prospal back with Gaborik and Dubinsky with Callahan and Avery. Also, voros and brashear can basically swap on and off for each other, they are equally useless. how was brashear an upgrade over orr again?

your defense is pretty much right on…rozsival needs to be sent down, who cares if you need to pay half his salary, its worth it so he isn’t playing for the rangers. scratch redden for a game or two to send him a message, but he hasn’t been as atrocious as roszival this year plus forgetting about his salary, he isn’t a bad 5th or 6th defenseman and has some experience over the kids.

lastly, can we find some cap space to sign chelios to mentor our young D? because we certainly don’t want redden doing it…i think he would say something like this, “find a good defensive partner [Chara for him], coast on their coattails for a few statistically good seasons, cash in when a free agent, and then don’t care for the rest of your contract while you count your money”

I'll be honest DB

I was at the game last night and it was by far one of the worst games I have seen Drury play.

He can’t make pass, he never shoots the puck, and he makes no space for other players.

All the more reason....

….to bench him.

Maybe it’ll get his attention, too.

Oh I agree with you

but him being on the ice is nothing but bad for the Rangers

The way things are going and even with my utter discontent with Boyle and Voros, I have to admit I like your lineup and the ice time suggestions, benching Kotalik and Drury would absolutely get the message across that all will be held accountable for their lack of effort and results

by Lone Ranger in Florida on Dec 17, 2009 11:30 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I feel bad for Torts....

He gives his all behind the bench and is truly driven to make this team a winner. Drury is one of the major culprits of this fallout. He needs to have his “C” stripped and I think that is whats coming. I can see players like Higgins moving to the check line and Kotalik being a healthy scratch. I think trades are coming… and its not trades that any Ranger fan wants to see. I mean the trades that signal a gloomy future .. Kids for past prime bums. And its not the lines… Its the passion that these players have. If you dont play with passion and like you want to win every game……..YOU WONT.. Its time to light a fire on the bench. This team is pathetic!!

My Ranger Christmas Song !!!!

Seasons pretty much dead in December!!! What a joke!!! Thanks Sather… All I want for Christmas is for Sather to be fired…For Sather to be fired…. For Sather to be fired… All i want for Christmas is for Sather to be fired and I would wish Blueshirt Banter a Merry Christmas!!!!

Kabanov is gonna be solid but ...

First overall you need to draft someone who will be a future leader and is in that superstar category.. Ive done some research on the 2010 draft and I say Kabanov tops out at the level of a Frolov. Hes gonna be a good player but I think the kid to take if we happen to be so bad to be in this position is either Taylor Hall, a center with the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League or Tyler Seguin a center from Plymouth also in the Ontario Hockey League.

by RangerFan5 on Dec 17, 2009 10:38 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Kabonov speculation

Came from the assumption we won’t have one of the top 2 to take Seguin or Hall. Obviously if the Rangers find themselves in position to take one, they will.

suggestions

scracthing drury from the line up would not be a good idea. Yeah he is not scoring but the little things he does make his role important on a team that is struggling. There is now other centerman besides dubi that is going to win face and put in good work on the PK. In resposnse demote drury to the fourth line. So the lines would be:

Lisin-Dubinsky-Gaborik
Higgins-Anisimov-Callahan
Prospal-Christensen-Avery
boyle-drury-kotalik

With these lines you could play them fairly evenly and allow the top line more time if they are producing. That main issue with torts is he wants secondary scoring but for secondary players to score they need to play. Any hockey player will tell you its hard to generate and offensize or a rhythm playing only a few shifts a period. They picked up christensen and i counted his shifts at the buffalo game on saturday and he maybe got 1 or 2 shifts a period. He is a decent player with good hands I believe he just needs the chance to get out there and gain some confidence along with the rest of the guys. Playing with torts could either hinder your career or boost it, i truly believe giving more time to anisomov will allow him to play better. Also with Lisin he looked well last night in the third period when he had some time, give them them time and you will see the benefits….

The way we are playing

First overall is looking real good. Tyler Seguin is the next Stevie Y and will be a great player for years to come.

by RangerFan5 on Dec 17, 2009 10:47 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

really?

are we really hoping for a last place finish? Even in the recent years we didnt make the playoffs at all, where did that get us? I can’t even fathom the thought of us finishing in the bottom. I know the playoffs aren’t looking great unless we step it up immediately but I will never resort to hoping for the bottom.

What has to happened?

Send a big name to Hartford. Thats what u do. Rosival is number one on my list. He is horrible and Trots keep putting him out there. He sucks more then words can discribe. He can’t hit, he can’t get a shoot through to the net and he can’t keep the puck in at the blue line. He played the third most of any ranger last night. Are u kidding me Trots!! What does this guy have over this team. TRade him,Demote him or release him. As long as this guy is not the team we won’t win. He plays scared and he can’t have that as a veretan defenseman on a team that lacks depth.

by Roc1193 on Dec 17, 2009 10:59 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Knowing us, we’ll get a top 1-5 pick…..BUT we won’t have a 1st round pick. It’ll be funny to see Sather go into a panic, trade out 1st rounder for George Laraque so Brashear has a partner in crime, and see him get injured 10 games in. Just the Rangers fans luck… and Sather’s stupidity at its finest.

by Dougee on Dec 17, 2009 11:11 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Question. Why are we putting the Prospal-Dubinsky-Gaborik line back together? I know they cooled off some after a hot start but I think Dubinsky has been playing pretty well since his return to the lineup. Wouldn’t hurt at this point. Then do the rest of the lines this way:

Avery-Anisimov-Callahan
Higgins-Christensen-Lisin
Boyle-Drury-Kotalik

Then do the D-men this way:

Sanguinetti-Staal
Del Zotto-Girardi
Gilroy-Heikkenen

Redden and Roszival don’t deserve to be on the ice after that display last night.

Rule #1. Cardio. Rule #2 Double Tap.

now thats the line up id like to see. for the forwards atleast.

for dmen. we gotta stick mdz with staal i think. let them kick some ass.

staal mdz
girardi hikk
sangs rozi

man i wish r and r both wont play and we could bring gilly back up

Gilroy will be back – and pretty soon if I had to guess.

No way I put Girardi – whose play has been streaky as hell – with Heikkinen.

Unfortunately, they won’t get a lot of ice time tonight – but it appears (from various beat reporters) that Sangs and Heikk (who are comfortable with each other since they were paired together in Hartford) will be a pair tonight.

Since Staal and MDZ are the only d-men hitting anything, I think you have to break them up.
Leave Staal / Girardi and MDZ / Rozi

Until Gilroy comes back – then bench Rozi. Or send him to Siberia. (or the nearest convenient parallel dimension)…..

by dbmaven on Dec 17, 2009 3:58 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

To be honest

Sather puts Torts in a bad position, Torts cant send any of the underachievers down Rozy, Redden, Drury, Voros, and Brashear for some reason or another. Dubinsky, Callahan, Prospal and Avery check, create, hit and play good enough for ice time. Higgins whom i really feel bad for because if he really doesnt suck he fooled all of us. Defensively, I think everyone is who they are Del Zotto is a beast, Staal is good, Girardi is streaky, Redden Ditto, Rozy sucks, Heikennen is taking a much more capable Gilroys spot … My point is who can Torts move down if he had to? Lisin? Boyle? Torts has no leverage on these players. All he can do is get the best out of what he has.

by louielounz1 on Dec 17, 2009 1:21 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

yea, are we really at the point where we need to beg players to join the rangers? it should be an honor to play in new york. why are we giving all these incentives and clauses to very good but essentially second and third line skaters? we’re handcuffed by cats who have been fantastic role players on some good teams in the past…buffalo, ottawa. c’mon slats.
