Rangers News: Redden and Kotalik benched

Christensen and Sanguinetti in. Lundqvist gets his 8th straight start.

Not the "earth-shattering" moves we were looking for. Confounding, even....

Redden has seemed to play better lately than Rozsival.

Sounds like it's mostly more of the same. And Voros continues to sit - we're paying him for ....what, exactly??

Sources: tweets of Andrew Gross, Brooksie and Zipay all confirm the same info.

@stevezipay    Redden, Kotalik benched for tonight from mobile web

Late breaking quote from Gross:

#NYRangers D Wade Redden "not pleased" about being "singled out" by being a healthy scratch.

It's close

He’s got the wrong R benched. Maybe Rozsival will play 30 minutes tonight.

Glad Christensen is back in the lineup.

This is so ridiculous. Bench Redden and play Rosival?

Where is the justice?

by old hickory on Dec 17, 2009 1:14 PM EST reply actions

I think we need to start calling them by different names.
“Null” and “Void”, I think, would work nicely. And they are perfect partners…

by dbmaven on Dec 17, 2009 1:18 PM EST reply actions

Only reasoning I can see here is that Redden, for all intents and purposes, is completely unmovable. I’m not sure if he’s got an NTC, but with that contract he’s damn near guaranteed to be here ‘til it’s up. Bench him, play Roszival as much as possible and hopefully he gleams some interest so that he can be traded. His contract sucks, but it’s still less $$ and years than Redden’s.

Though I still stand by chaining dumbbells to their skates and dropping them in the East River.

by dbmaven on Dec 17, 2009 1:29 PM EST up reply actions

……on the flip…rozi gets worse and becomes totally un movable, I think he already is though. We have to win tonight, to save face, or at least go in there and play old time hockey/ We have the flyers and Carolina coming up, must wins…..but then again, i hope we tank and get a good pick cause we are not good enough for a first round win. So might as well not be a tease and get there.

by earthworm on Dec 17, 2009 1:31 PM EST reply actions

if we dont get at least 4 wins out of these next 8 games (2 vs isles, 3 vs car, 2 vs phi) then this team will have already tanked to some extent. just think if we lose those 3 to carolina they are within 3 points of us, depending on our other games in the meantime.

if there is one thing the nhl has shown the last number of years, being 7 or 8 seeds every year never helps a team. teams either have to be very good or very bad to get better. the very bad teams are doing it with high draft picks every year.

Pitt, Chicago have already proved it and the Isles, Kings, even Atl (to some extent) are on their way to proving it as well.

give this team Hall or Seguin next year along with Grachev and Stepan and at the very least we will be adding talent and youth who should have hunger and fire which this team doesnt. the key to some of that is eliminating Sather and Messier is not the answer to become the next GM because he is Sather’s boy and wont fix Sather’s mistakes. We need someone like Brian Burke who isnt afraid to clean house.

by Michael Gleich on Dec 17, 2009 1:42 PM EST up reply actions

sorry somehow forgot Washington in teams that lost to get high picks and the talent that came with it turned them around.

by Michael Gleich on Dec 17, 2009 1:44 PM EST up reply actions

Just to add on-it seems like Torts (and I’m sure Slats has a hand in this) is punishing players not based on their body of work, but major mistakes. Look at Gilroy-Byfuglien blew by him for that OT goal in Chicago, bang, down to the AHL. Redden, typical garbage d-zone coverage and Sim gets a goal. Kotalik, falls down, breakaway (which Nielsen flubbed his shot, he had LQ beat but didn’t even get a shot off, bad luck on his part).

by Caerid11 on Dec 17, 2009 1:32 PM EST reply actions

these are cop-out moves that could have been made two weeks ago at least and send no real message to a team that had no heart and no fire last night. not to mention he is going to run lundqvist in the ground. tonight was a great night to start chad johnson with the afternoon game sat vs phi.

by Michael Gleich on Dec 17, 2009 1:35 PM EST reply actions

Had a feeling this would happen

Looking at the ice time, situations they were played, and each one of their defensive partners from last night, had a feeling Redden would be benched. For some reason it looks like Torts, Renney, and Sather have all had the need to get on their knees for Rozi.

Comparing Redden to Rosival is like comparing two different piles of poop. It goes without saying – but taking one of the lineup to make a statement is not the solution. Taking both out of the lineup for good is the first step.

I agree with these moves

Kotalik has given up 3 breakaways on PP in the last week.

Redden is just awful and deserves this. Im surprised he is not please. His checks are still good.

Redden not please the more I think about this angrier I get. He actually thinks he is playing good? Jesus Christ he is on acid.

There's a fan post about it

WFAN was ’reporting" it this morning. The speculation was that if the Rangers lose tonight that Sather would be fired.

Why his tenure would rely on one regular season game after 10 seasons is anyone’s guess.

there’s a reason to hope for an L. problem is as i said before bringing in Messier to replace him wouldnt do shit. havent said this before but any chance we could get JD to come back to the rangers as president of hockey ops?

Doesn’t matter who does the day to day, as long as Torts is involved. Let him shape the team and give this team some identity.

by goodieNY on Dec 17, 2009 3:10 PM EST up reply actions

let’s be real about torts too. he hasnt shaped this team any better than renney did. there is still no fire, no accountability and no scoring.

lmao. redden not pleased..

how about this. if your not pleased about being benched, STOP SUCKING.

i cant descirbe how happy i am kotalik and redden are benched tonight. next more is to bench rozi too. drury can play on the 4th line, cause he tries and thats the type of player he is. a 4th liner.

i wish they would go with these.

prospal dubinsky gaborik
avery anisimov callahan
higgins christensen lisin
boyle drury parenteau

staal mdz
girardi gilroy
heikk sangs

why is that so difficult to do.

i wish we could just send down voros brashear redden rozi and kotalik.

than wed have 17 mil lmao

i bet sather would extend drurys contract for 8 years 24 mil a year

LET'S GO RANGERS!!!

Redden out? Rosi in?

Tell me how that happens?

Redden is a mediocre defenseman at best, but I have noticed better play from his recently.

Rosi is just awful in every aspect. Hopefully his ice time is significantly less tonight.

by goodieNY on Dec 17, 2009 3:04 PM EST reply actions

the last 3-4 games rozi has been better than redden.

my opinion atleast.

oh and if its true that if we loose tonight sather is fired.
LETS GO ISLES!

LET'S GO RANGERS!!!

by Moshe52792 on Dec 17, 2009 3:12 PM EST up reply actions

Haha, I say we just keep rooting for the Rangers. Not like it matters anyway.

But comparing Redden to Rosi is like comparing which bag of crap you’d want to step in.

by goodieNY on Dec 17, 2009 3:13 PM EST up reply actions

One can hope that Rozsival's ice time will decrease

But based on the past few games… Girardi, MDZ, Staal and Rozsival will all play over 20 minutes tonight. Sangs and Heikkenen will be lucky to get 12 minutes each. How is that fixing the problem? Particularly, nauseating is that you know they’re going to send Rozsival out with the 2nd power play unit. Brilliant…

Does anyone in the Ranger organization actually think that Redden and Rozsival are helping this team? They can’t skate. They don’t score. Forget about hitting anyone. They’ve both been garbage for a while. Might as well find out what Gilroy, Heik, and Sangs can do.

Kotalik has been awful lately. 5 goals in the first 14 games and you can overlook the -4 rating. Maybe. But only 1 goal and a -11 rating in the next 18 games? Dreadful.

by J76 on Dec 17, 2009 3:37 PM EST up reply actions

we have 10 mill being benched….(kotalik, voros, and redden) thats kinda pathetic…i mean it crazy how far this team has fallen since such a great start…and is it me or is higgins never gonna get out of this slump…he plays well but cant finish…i dont think he’ll ever get out of it…this team is too shitty,…also you guys hear that prucha put up 2 goals the other night….PRUUUUUUUUUU!!!!

by nutz_35 on Dec 17, 2009 3:22 PM EST reply actions

Bench both Redden and Rozival

Dump them in Hartford, Save 11 million in salary cap. Dolan has plenty of money.

Nothing happens to Drury either?

Drury and Rosival are the 2 worst players on the roster right now…followed by Kotalik and Higgins(Sorry Higgy…) I’m not including Brashear, he’s not a player…

Why Redden? not Rosi.

The past shows winning teams start at the top

I Don’t want to beat a dead horse here but for the first time in my life (33yr old) that I hope we lose tonight so a major move in the top office is made. The rules in the NHL from the salary cap to the insigator rule must be fixed, albeit for now we need a tough culture that starts at the top. I hav no idea who can replace fatso and turn this around, Messier?, John Davision?, time will tell. We need that culture we had during the Mid-90’s with graves, Messier, Etc..There will never be another Graves and Messier but if they can replicate that within the organzation with tough, gritty young players..e.g (Penguins, devils) we will continue to get upset about the same crap. Torts is a very good coach and good for NY but his hands are tied. I cannot believe Rozy is still in the lineup and his body language just says..I suck and have no clue, no emotion, take the body protect the King..he is one of the best goaltenders in the NHL. I dont wish bad or failure on anyone or any organzation but Mr.Sather has clearly has to go, your in your early 60’s give someone else a change to shine..you have made your money and achievements with the Oilers in the 80’s

NY POst article

Redden, whose play has regressed dramatically over the last three weeks, confronted Tortorella in his office upon reporting to the rink and seeing his name—along with those of Ales Kotalik and Aaron (This is a Recording) Voros—on the list of scratched players.

Tortorella could be heard down the corridor screaming at Redden that his play had been unacceptable and soft. The defenseman’s responses could not be heard.

You serious!!! and Rozy was not also in the Coach’s offcce..lol…

by gene4240 on Dec 17, 2009 5:23 PM EST reply actions

redden has been much worse than rozi the past few games.

plsu i really think their trying to trade rozi and showcase him.

althought at this rate the more we play him the less chance we trade him

by Moshe52792 on Dec 17, 2009 5:36 PM EST up reply actions

Only good can come of this.

Redden, unlike Rosi, has the POTENTIAL to play much better.

by goodieNY on Dec 17, 2009 5:37 PM EST up reply actions

Well you can't tell Rozie is soft

He’s nowhere near the play as the other teams score, he’s already been left in the dust.

I’d actually have some respect for Rozsival if that were true. On the flip side, do you think Rozsival actually wants to play that much? He has enough trouble getting through 20 minutes without getting hit…

by J76 on Dec 17, 2009 5:47 PM EST up reply actions

wait...

there’s a bukake club in Tampa? Damn, I was just down there last week.

by chuck1ley on Dec 17, 2009 5:59 PM EST up reply actions

Well Drury scored so he’ll get a pass for the rest of the season and wind up with 8 goals and 13 assists. I really watched Rozi tonight, although he didn’t do anything really stupid, he is so gangly looking out there and kind of swiped the puck away a few times by accident. I say give him another 4 yrs at 6 mil.+ per.(sarcasm)

by earthworm on Dec 17, 2009 11:09 PM EST reply actions
