Rangers Analysis: Is change in the air?
So they finally won. It had to happen eventually. And although the victory (a victory that might have saved Glen Sather’s job—although I doubt it) was impressive and the opponent was hated in the end what does it prove?
A win against the Islanders should not be exciting it should be expected. Scoring more than two goals in a game should not be unusual it should be just another day at the office. And finally playing a game that doesn’t make your fans want to puke should be the norm, not unexpected.
Look, we have danced this dance before. The Rangers take you out to eat, show you a good time, buy you flowers and make you feel special. They show you how good they can treat you, how they have everything you want, and how if you just stay patient they will give it to you. But when it comes time to take the next step in the relationship they become distant, turn into another person, don’t answer your calls, and eventually you end up resenting them. Until they finally call you back, and then the cycle starts again.
Last night’s win—albeit an impressive one—means nothing unless they can build on it. Fortunately for the Rangers, there is no better time than now to do just that. Their next five games include one more against the Islanders, two again the Flyers and one against the Hurricanes. I have no problem in saying that I fully expect the Rangers to win all five of those games. The time for excuses is over, and if John Tortorella was really serious about making changes then it started yesterday.
Keep Wade Redden and Ales Kotalik out of the line-up. No, Redden doesn’t deserve to be benched; but Michael Rozsival played a pretty good game yesterday. Maybe he knows that this is his last chance to see some serious ice time, or maybe was just lucky. Either way I don’t want to see either of them in the line-up until they replace someone who isn’t working.
Join me after the jump for what Gross had to say.
Regardless the Rangers need to start winning games, and there is no better time to do it than in this next stretch of games. Let’s hope that Tortorella is keen on keeping this up, and as per Andrew Gross he is. Here are the highlights from his full story:
As if John Tortorella hasn’t put his team on notice already by benching veterans Wade Redden and Ales Kotalik, he upped the ante today by declaring there will be no more sense of entitlement around the team and that his coaching staff and general manager Glen Sather will no longer continue to play underachieving veterans, preferring, instead, to go through "bumps in the road" from young players, possibly players who will soon be called up from Hartford (AHL).
"This isn’t to make an example out of Wade Redden, Wade Redden hasn’t played well enough to be in the lineup," Tortorella said. "I’m not interested in making examples out of people. A coach’s responsibility is to put the best lineup on the ice. I felt I did that last night. It will be the same lineup going into Philly (tomorrow afternoon). For 25-30 games we tried to stay with him, we tried to bring confidence in with him and go about it that way and it hasn’t worked. It’s still trying to gain confidence but there’s going to be no entitlement around here. I think it kind of stinks of that around here. We’ve got kids and this coaching staff and manager want to infuse some kids into our lineup becase we feel that’s going to be the best way to build it. We’ll go through some bumps in the road with kids but not with underachieving veterans. I just don’t but it and it’s not going to work that way."
Well some of you have been screaming for some AHL injection, you might see it soon. Good to see that Glen Sather is on board with this--maybe Dolan is putting the squeeze on Sather finally. Let's hope that its true. Let's hope that change is in the air. Hell let's just hope that we actually see some change.

I want to believe this, I really do, but when I read in the article that Donald Brashear is in the lineup tomorrow, it just looks like more of the same to me. You tell me one thing Donald Brashear has done to earn playing time, and I’ll go along with it.

I can’t imagine that Tortorella is publicly making these statements otherwise.
I really think Torts said “OK, I’ll try it your way” up until this point.
And he reached his armageddon point Wednesday night.
“Nike”.
Just do it.
yeah I would agree
thats why I made the “Maybe Dolan is putting the squeeze on Sather” comment because I can’t imagine Dolan is very happy right now

That’s entirely possible. Somewhere (maybe on Scotty Hockey’s blog?) I read that they’re desperately calling ticket holders to “buy more”. If the combination of a lackluster on-ice product and the doldrums of the economy have actually hit the Dolans in the wallet – it may be possible. Better to fill the seats by putting a product on the ice (with players that actually are hungry to be there) than leave the seats empty.
Frankly – I don’t give a third of a s**t what the motivation is or was. It’s overdue.
Lets see what results Torts gets. Now we just sit back and enjoy the ride. As I’ve said all along it may not be the best season ever but at least it’s entertaining, and thats what this is. Entertainment.

Going into Philly, you need Brashear, at the very least, in the lineup – just in case the current Neanderthal Carcillo (if I called him a cave man, the GEICO gang would be offended) decides to take a run at Hank or Gaborik.
I have no issue with Brashear in – for that matter I’d put him on left wing with Prospal and Gaborik – let him park in front of the net and smash people into the boards – he does that fairly well….
actually DB I agree
You need Brashear aginst the thugs

only one reason!
Jim i feel ya,but the only reason Donald is in the lineup is for protection reasons,we have NO OTHER FIGHTERS,you have to have that kind of presence if needed. The only answer to that would be Vooros,so pick your poision!
If – as reported yesterday, the gloves truly are off and they’re going to be willing to “go through bumps in the road with rookies, but not with underachieving vets” – there may be one other option. Waive both of them and bring up Justin Soryal and/or Dane Byers.

who do we have in the minors too call up that would be somewhat effective if they actually start calling up AHLers
Corey Locke
Dale Weise
Jordan Owens
PA Parenteau
Are they “NHL ready”. Maybe – maybe not. But they’re all “plus” players and putting up points as forwards.
A lot of perople have been criticizing Tortorella lately, including myself, but you have to give the guy credit for what he is doing here. He is holding players accountable, he is punishing the troubled veterans, and allowing the kids a chance to play. These are steps that needed to be taken last season, but were not. They are now, and I guess it is better late then never.

Does anybody get the feel that Torts has been trying to do this all along, but had his hands tied by management? He said that management wanted to infuse the young guys with the vets, but ithink now with no rewards i think they’ve just given the reigns fully to torts and his no bs policy, hard to believe a guys entire coaching career was about playing guys who deserved to play, yet the first 30 plus games he plays redden rozi and drury all the time and in important situations? That doesn’t compute with me… I think sather realizes his job is on the line and he finally has given torts the free will to do as he pleases… Do i think rozi or redden will be waived, prolly not, but i bet you torts wouldn’t have a problem with it…
I 100% agree with all of you who think that
this is the real torts and that management has tied his hands.
DB you are right they are losing money (from their usual profit) and it is starting to piss the Dolans off. Awesome!

Brashear.
Brasher is most definitely needed tomorrow against the “Broad Strret Bullys” without a doubt, and as for the comment of putting him on Gaborik’s line, is not such a far fetched idea. A little digging in the corners, a little “jam” in fron of the net and a little on ice safety net for gabby is really not such a bad idea. I would rather watch the Rangers try and play shorthanded four against five with Brashear out for some protection and balance out the next three lines.
Now as for the youth movement, we all want to see it but unfortunately we are not there yet. But waiving a few useless veterans picking up the correct types of second tier players to bring along the youngsters is where really need to be. Someone to teach them accountability on and off the ice. Not aging veterans milking their satheresk paychecks and all the playing time.
One last thing, I have read that waiving some of these contracts may cause a stir with the players union, but why? The players still getting paid, no one defaulted on paying, it’s just managements way of admitting a mistake and moving on. No? If a player is waived and clears waivers is he free to sign elsewhere. If so, deal with the fallout during the next CBA and lets put a decent team on the ice.
P.S. Mr. Drury, nice goal last night, all due respect, but take a page out of Marcus Naslunds’ book and hangem up. You’ve gotten more than you were ever worth. Do us all a favor!!!!!
its a problem because NHL players dont want
to play in the AHL. They don’t get treated as well no matter how much they get paid.

if Dru retired and we admitted our mistakes dumping Redden and rozi we could literally start over next year. Willie Mitchell would be a great add as a defensive shutdown d-man to go with the kids and re-signing staal long term.
Forwards like Frolov, Plekanec (could be very good w gabby), Ponikarovsky, Rene Bourque (breakout year) are UFA’s w Kovalchuk.
RFA’s include: Tier 1: Semin (talk about a LW to play w Gabby), Backstrom (Center), Bobby Ryan
Tier 2: Ryan Kesler, Setoguchi?, Gilbert Brule, Nik Bergfors
I am sure that Was and Ana would match on those 3 especially Anaheim since they have their stars locked up cheap. It is at least fun to look at who is and “could” be out there if we create some money.
i love talking free agency
i would definitely love to see the rangers move redden, rosival, and kotalik (as would everyone) just to get some cap space….and with staal and girardi becoming free agents theyre gonna need to clear some cap…i would like to see staal sign one of those long contracts maybe 10yr/3.5mill….i know he doesnt produce that much offensively but he’s a shutdown defenseman every stanley cup defender needs…girardi i like a lot but if cap space is tight i think he is expendable…but girardi is one of our more physical d-men and i’d like to see him stay…OR I could see the rangers moving him for some picks or maybe a second line forward…i can actually see a cup contending team taking a chance on kotalik…if a team needs a player to help on the pp I see them taking a chance on kotalik which would be amazing…and to tell you the truth i like gabby on the point with mdz cuz gabby has a canon and make those nice passes to set up a play
And I know its farfetched but IF the rangers were to get rid of all three (R&R and kotalik – 14.5mill) I would throw 8mill/10yr at kovalchuk…this guy is the real deal and him and gabby on the same team make this team a stanley cup contender instantly…what i like most about kovalchuk is he seems to play with a lot of passion which is lacking with the rangers….but in the end i doubt this would happen
i think a player like rene bourque would be an awesome pick up…he’s big and seems to have a good scoring touch…or a player like backstrom would be amazing…playing with gabby i see them both having 90 points.
for all of those NHL10 lovers they put grachev in the game…and i put him on my first line with gabby and he’s become the top goal scorer in the league… also corey locke has some skill…i started a new season playing a bunch of the rangers young players…its pretty awesome
any one of those 3 RFA would be amazing pickups, with Backstrom probably the best because of his playmaking ability. backstrom to me in this generation’s version of adam oates, who personally i think is very underrated.
backstrom and gabby would be a dream combo. and id love to see AA on the left wing of that line
LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
idk
i just cant see how we wud be able to move redden and kotalik, let alone rosi, unless we are able to release them, but im pretty sure a buyout wud be necessary rite? i dont feel like researching the current CBA, but i imagine cutting ties with the players will only do damage…but anything is better than having them on the squad….god, im soooo embarrassed that i actually thought Redden coming over wud help out, esp with the power play…i guess Chara makes every Dman he plays with look fast, effective, and offensively gifted!!! haha
Bring Back Gilroy.
