Rangers Recap: Rangers clip Flyers 2-1
John Tortorella made headlines the other day by making the statement that he would enforce all of the changes that we were promised when he was hired less than a year ago. He employed his new roster two days ago against the Islanders and it resulted in a 5-2 romping, filled with energy and the type of play you hope to see from a good hockey team. That continued last night where the Rangers beat the Philadelphia Flyers 2-1 for their second straight win.
The first period started out well for the Rangers with Chris Drury notching his second goal in two games (2 in his previous 27 games before Thursday). The Rangers surrendered the lead shortly after on a Chris Pronger power play goal after an Enver Lisin boarding penalty. Although the Rangers took four penalties, they played a solid road period and kept the Flyers pretty much in check.
The second period was more of the same from the Rangers, relying on a few great Henrik Lundqvist saves before Artem Anisimov scored his second goal in as many games to give the Rangers a 2-1 lead. Marian Gaborik continued to be kept without much space, mainly due to some fantastic defending from Pronger (who really played a great game). The Rangers had their chances to break this one open in the second but Christopher "fanned on the puck" Higgins, well, fanned on a few scoring opportunities. And Ryan Callahan couldn’t find a way to bang his alone in the slot chance, shooting directly into Brian Boucher’s chest.
The third period was pretty much dedicated to tons of defense from both teams—which incidentally lead to tons of offensive chances. The game went back and forth and if wasn’t for some spectacular Henrik Lundqvist saves this game might have easily gone in a different direction. Overall though the Rangers played a pretty composed, and solid road game.
I would still have to say that the Rangers have been taking too many penalties; they just didn’t pay for it today. And while Marian Gaborik was kept off the score sheet he was still very noticeable. Defensively he broke up Flyers outlet passes, lifted stick to stop scoring chances, and didn’t take any crap from Flyers who were simply looking to get under his skin. Have I mentioned that I love him yet?
Oh by the way Gaborik has 24 goals the same amount that Markus Naslund had all of last year.
Empty netters:
-
Michael Del Zotto quietly played one of his better games this year. He was very physical against a big and tough Flyers team, plus he was all over the ice offensively and ran the power play pretty effectively.
-
Henrik Lundqvist played his best game of the year. Good to see him back to his old form.
-
Artem Anisimov is beginning to blossom before our very eyes. The 21 year-old was spectacular today and really seems to have figured out the speed of the NHL. He physically imposed the Flyers all night and was a monster in the offensive zone. Watch him shield the puck with his body, it’s beautiful to watch.
-
Drury also had one of his best games of the year. Think that goal against the Islanders boosted is confidence? Good for him we need him to get going.
-
Man Chris Higgins seems to do everything right. He gets the puck, he shields away defenders, he makes space and then he finds ways not to score. I feel for him but he needs to start scoring, he is starting to hurt this team.
-
We said it in the live thread but I have Chris Pronger with a fiery passion, and would give up quite a bit to have him in Ranger blue. Great move for the Flyers in my opinion.
-
As much as I hate to say it Micahel Rozsival played his second consecutive great game. Maybe benching Wade Redden was the right move by Torts.
-
Speaking of John Tortorella he better continue keeping Ales Kotalik and Wade Redden on the bench, things are working right now no need to rock the ship.
-
Ryan Callahan also played a great two way game, playing great defense and making a few offensive chances as well.
-
I also think that Ilkka Heikkinen played a great game tonight. He was solid on his own end, threw a few nice hits and didn’t seem out of place at all. I hate to say it but I think he is making more of a difference right now then Matt Gilroy was.

good recap
the biggest difference i see for the rangers is the effort and the efforts in their hitting…and i completely agree with the heikkenin…he’s been more solid than gilroy in his own zone
this game lacked something didn’t it…it wasn’t crazy physical…the flyers looked liked they didnt care to me…good, i hate this damn team and i hope they never win again…even though we seem to be getting better i still hope some moves are made
i think u mean hate where pronger is concerned.
Artie needs more ice time and i believe he has earned it. he should up more like 17-18 min than 13.
one thing i have really noticed is now that they told staal to get back to d first his game has picked up considerably and he is must more decisive in his movement. time for his extension.
he did get bumped from basically 3:30 in each of the first 2 to 5:30 in the 3rd, so hopefully.

Anyone else find that Artie reminds them of Jagr?
It’s the first time I’ve noticed this but watching the game today he looked eerily similar… Just the way he was so strong on the puck, shielding it well. He’s a big, strong guy like Jagr, he even had his jersey tucked like him today.
He just has a similar ‘sloppy looking but very much in control’ way of handling the puck and facing opponents.
he does...
it’d be amazing if he turned into a jagr
Back to .500 boys. I hope its a start of a lengthy winning streak, one in which puts us firmly
within a playoff spot and has this team playing up to there capabilities…….one can only hope…..cant one?

Rosi's playing well.
I think he’s a whole lot like Chris Duhon on the Knicks. IS he the best? Hell no. But if he plays well…and doesn’t play horrible (and kills the team with his stench)…the team can be good.
If Rosival is playing like he is…the Rangers are a good team.
Drury’s playing well too.
I think you cannot start Nate Robinson Wade Redden…keep his ass off the active roster as long as they keep winning

3rd down + Steve Smith = 1st Down.
"I just saw Avatar, and Sean Avery was hands down the best character!"
best case scenario is Rozi plays well enough to attract desire from another club in a salary dump trade for us. because of the structure of his contract rozi while counting 5 mil to the cap the next two years will only actually make 4 and 3 in salary so he could be attractive to a team like Phx who is said to want a vet and has financial trouble. Helps them reach the league minimum against the cap without actually paying that amount out.

Good I think?
First time writing and I don’t want to sound negative. I’m from New Zealand and been a rangers Fan for 15+ years. The last two games the difference I see is Lundqvist is playing better. 3 goals on 74 shots (last two games) is great. The Islanders game (2nd one) is a great example- Tort’s goes mental and I thought the Rangers would come out fighting literally. What happens, 9 shots before we get one and out shot 14 to 2 in the first. I really hope this team is turning the corner and not that we are getting great goaltending. If its the latter then we can’t play him ever game? can we?
regardless of the win, this was a hard fought game. the forecheck was consistently there throughout the game, the PK was strong. hank was king as usual. good game by MDZ, Girardi and Heikky. Rozi was calm and efficient. which is all i want from him right now. offensively, it was more a team effort than one forward standing out, though i must say anisimov really made a difference tonight. all the young guys played well actually. an encouraging performance boys.

I missed the game, but did Staal really play 30:45???

Higgins career shooting % is .122. Last year in Montreal, which had been the scoring year of his career, his % was .079. This year: .044. That’s pretty inexplicable.
not if you consider he takes a lot of bad shots. He often puts himself in bad positioning which results in low position shots

yes a lot of his shots have been bad angle shots where he is just hoping they go in.
by Michael Gleich on Dec 19, 2009 5:09 PM EST up reply actions
He’s also had a fair share of breakaway opportunities. I never paid attention to his shot selection when he was in Montreal, but I doubt it is drastically worse.
so the argument is what? law of averages says he has to be due?
by Michael Gleich on Dec 19, 2009 5:12 PM EST up reply actions
What argument? I was just perplexed by the discrepancies and I don’t think shot selection fully explains it.
well he has banged a lot of posts as well, so if he netted half of the pipes he hit maybe his percentage is more like was before.
in a chicken or the egg type scenario if you look at his stats his scoring and shooting percentage are lower as is his pp production, so could be he was getting easier opportunities over the course of the season on the pp than he is now, like deflection goals too.
his inability to score on breakaways is perplexing, but i dont know if that is new or old.

that should read “low percentage shots”, my bad

Callahan is taking over games like he used to checking hard, creating chances off of mistakes and blocking shots… This just in Drury’s imposter was found dead outside the garden… The real Chris Drury has arrived…finally!

thats why he is the king..
henrik won the game today for us the flyers had alot of chances but a world class goalie does that for you not like ray emery lol lol since torts blasted the team and made them feel his wrath the rangers are 2 and 0 nice work torts thats what these overpaid stiffs needed a good kick in the ass …
finally
finally my boy Dru is turning it around as I promised he would. hes playin very good hockey right now and I believe most of you drury haters can relax for a little bit
Favre 4 Ever
I Believe In Chris Drury
How about Avery???
Avery seems to have found his gritty, irritating game again. Not only is he drawing penalties, and taking some, but he’s been forechecking hard, creating space for Gabby in the offensive zone and creating loose pucks.
Just another bright spot in these dim days,.
i definitely agree
Avery’s play has drastically improved since the beginning of the year..he has returned to his old form as a serious contributor, which along with his instigating nature, has become a true asset to the team….it’s soooo funny how allllll of us are drinking the “kool aid” after a TWO game win streak!! hahaha….gotta love sports!! :)
Philadelphia Flyers
I expected them to be this bad. Yes I love the Flyers but we have to face the facts. Holmy grin or Bobby Clutz its the smae group of men running the team living in the past. When they won this year they still looked bad!!! Danny Bri.. SUCKS!!! Ed sell the team and let someone from this Centry take over!!! Keep the coach and clean house!!!
