Rangers Analysis (aka Rant): Seriously, What Now?
Authors Note: Sorry for no attempt at paragraphs and such, but why should I try to write seriously when the team I support, follow, and love can't even complete the simplest of hockey plays (I'M LOOKING AT YOU, ROZIVAL - STEP UP ON YOUR MAN - EVERYONE LEARNS THAT IN PEE-WEES).
"I'm not gonna go into assessment of players right now, thank you." - John Tortorella
- This is why, amongst all the BS that is going on right now, John Tortorella deserves to keep his job. Torts gets it, and he puts it so plainly and perfectly that how can you be mad at him? If Tortorella gets fired at any time during this season, the whole front office of the Rangers should be fired with him, including Messier.
- I, like Torts, am not going to get into player evaluations either. The locker-room has to be a mess, and I think for the first time in a while Chris Drury doesn't know what to do. I feel especially bad for Henrik Lundqvist, who is giving arguably the most effort of his career and is getting jack for it. If Lundqvist requested a trade tomorrow, I really don't know if I could be mad at him with what has happened recently.
- I know I try to be the guy around here who doesn't act like the typical New Yorker where one loss and the sky is falling, but I beg the question of how long does Glen Sather and the Ranger organization sit on their hands and hope for the best? If the Rangers don't turn this around by Christmas, we might as well become sellers at the deadline and dive for the draft (which isn't a sure thing this year, that's for sure). I would rather see a plan presented and implemented then trying to rebuild the team every off-season.
Keep reading for more thoughts I managed to put on paper Monday night.
- This leads me to the FUN topic of the Rangers front office. Why are they so invisible from scrutiny and the potential of losing their jobs? I've been saying it for a couple of seasons now to my buddies, but the Rangers need fresh young blood in the office. I would like to find the hockey version of Theo Epstein, to be honest. The Rangers can't try to be the Yankees of the NHL anymore because of how "fair" Bettman has made the league. I want a GM who will use advanced statistics and knows every player inside and out. I want to see bang for the buck players in Ranger blue alongside Gaborik scoring a goal per game or more.
- Speaking of Bettman, everyone needs to read this post by Tom Benjamin regarding the salary cap restrictions. I agree with him wholeheartedly that although the salary cap era has made for great parity, I just hate how no team can distinguish itself into a dynasty. Call me crazy, I guess.
- Again, off topic, but if anyone feels bad for Alex Ovechkin possibly being injured, I can't really sympathize with you. Check out this screenshot I took about when the Ranger game ended on Monday night. Clearly, he has got his knee out. He has gotten away with some stuff in the past, and I'm not saying this is bad karma, but it is what it is.
- Ok, I'm calming down a bit now. The season isn't over, and it's not like the Rangers are moving to Kansas City. I just hate seeing a dejected John Tortorella and Henrik Lundqvist not knowing what to say. No one is to really blame. The boys played a hard game for two and a half periods against one of the best teams in the league, hands down. Poor bounces and poor decisions have plagued the Rangers for almost two weeks now, and we have to wonder how long can it last?
- I will say this one last time for the season. The Rangers NEED control the pace and play of the game. This does not mean they don't give up chances, it just means that for every chance the other team gets, the Rangers get at least one if not two. For every minute the Rangers spend in their zone they need to spend two in the opposing teams' zone. Marion Gaborik cannot support this team, as much as he has come damn close to doing so, and the only way for support players like Callahan, Higgins, Avery, Kotalik, and Lisin to start chipping in points is to spend as much possible time in the opposing teams' zone. This sounds so ridiculously simple, but that is what the Rangers built; a simple well-skating team that can be beat on simple plays like odd and even-man rushes that have plagued the Blueshirts all season.
So that's that. Now that everyone has had a full day off to calm down, what are you thinking now? Still stuck on one or two issues? Still dumbfounded and don't know where to start? Talk it out in the comments.

Good Perspective
I like the thought process of this article Rob. I do still feel at this point though we need to chalk this up as a rebuilding season. The offensive style our coach wants will not work since we can’t get any secondary scoring. Just go back and focus on good defensive hockey. Drury and Henrik should appreciate that. Back to basics now ….

Good screenshot on Ovechkin. The suspension was a joke, as most of the suspensions are in the NHL.
As far as the Rangers go, I have no answers. But I don’t feel bad, because neither do the coaches or players

Your right Jim. The suspension on Ovechkin was a joke. If you are going to attempt to stop those type of plays in the NHL you need more severe consequences. What alex got was a slap on the hand. Now had that been Avery ……..

Torts?
Does anyone know what happened to the phrase “earning your playing time” or “the only who player definately made the team is Henrik” ? I’d rather lose with young players than lose with the players we have now. Also, can anyone explain fully what would happen to Rozival’s cap hit if we sent him down to the AHL. I’m not fully clear on what would happen and if it does come off our cap, why isn’t this happening?
by l.whit7873 on Dec 2, 2009 9:05 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
The organization is still responsible for paying his salary.
The entire amount of cap hit comes off the ledger.
In real numbers – they still have to pay him his full 2009/10 salary of $6mm
$5mm is freed from the cap total.
Why isn’t it happening? Really? You’d pay a guy $6mm to play in the AHL ?
by dbmaven on Dec 2, 2009 9:23 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Actually, a pro-rated amount of the cap hit comes off the books – not a full $5mm.

I wouldn't mind paying Rosival to not play for the Rangers
It’s Sathers mistake let him eat it

pay to sit
If they thought changing one player would have a significant impact, paying the $5mm most likely would not be an obstacle (or they could buy out his contract) — making a serious run in the playoffs would generate more than $5 mm for the Rangers. The problem is, they are not merely one player away from a serious playoff run.
In the playoffs, Gaborick would be hit so hard and so often he wouldn’t see straight — no way they could get by the Devils, the Caps the Flyers or the Pens at this point. That’s why we’ll continue to see Rosival until all 6 Devils starting D are out of the lineup with injuries and Lamoriello begs Sather to give him Rosival. ;)

Playoffs?
Playing one playoff series would generate far more than 5 million. Not saying the waiving him would be enough to make us one of the top 8, but its certainly a step in the right direction. The Dolans can afford to make this move by just charging an extra nickel on hot dogs for the rest of the season.

Beyond a 6m AHL player
From Laurie, back in August:
There’s also the AHL’s veteran rule to consider. AHL clubs are only allowed to carry 6 players with 260 professional games or more of experience. One of those players can have no more than 320 games of professional experience.
I haven’t looked at the current wolfpack roster, but it’s something to remember when we talk about just jamming everyone in Hartford that sucks.

Very good point. I think the only player with serious numbers in that category is Mathieu Dandenault, and he has way more than 320 NHL games – but I don’t know how his PTO contract plays in that realm.
Any of the current Rangers have one-way professional contracts – which would be a whole different story.
by dbmaven on Dec 2, 2009 11:07 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I should have added
For the purpose of the AHL veteran rule, pro means NHL, AHL, IHL or Euro elite league
Dandenault and Locke are the only one’s I spot, but I’m not familiar with some of the names on the list, and don’t much feel like searching their career stats.
And yes, waivers are the other issue.

I doubt we would call back up Rozsival
if things are THAT bad then we may as well tank the season

My understanding is that if Rozy is recalled, he has to pass through waivers, and can be picked up by another team for half the salary, the other half of which the Rangers will have to pay.

Easy to discuss the problems, but hard to find solutions. The cap space and Sather’s bad contracts make it almost impossible to find quick solutions. We can only hope that some secondary scoring develops and that the defense tightens up. Tortorella may understand the weaknesses of the individual players, but he needs to adapt his system to play to the strengths of his players. It appears that he isn’t doing that.

A) you can use the reply button to reply to specific posts
B) I would look for ANY trade avenue or even send him to the AHL. I know I am disagreed with there but he is simply hurting this team.

I wonder if its possible to “on paper” ship him to a new team and pay his salary over there under the table.

Absolutely not possible
If the league/NHLPA ever got wind of it, it’s a serious breech of the CBA.
by dbmaven on Dec 2, 2009 11:08 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't really know the CBA that well
So it wouldn’t be possible to do what the Rangers/Caps did with Jagr? That was only legal with the old CBA I take it?
by CharleyH on Dec 2, 2009 11:53 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
no they can
but that deal was worked through a trade. And in that case why would we agree to pay half of Rozsivals salary on another team? May as well buy him out then

Pay 2 mill of Rozsivals deal, ship him somewhere
and get a 2 million dollar winger who can actually put the puck in the net. I’d rather have a slightly over paid wing(4 mill for 20ish goals a year) than a ridiculously overpaid d man. I suppose its kind of a lose lose, but it was a thought that crossed my mind

No, I asked our resident cap expert Dave from Blue Seat Blogs this question, and the Jagr deal was done under the old CBA, and is not permitted under the new one

Rozival.
Is there ANY trade value there ? If anyone is scouting our team they can see for themselves. It is hard to place the blame on one player but he is supposed to be our rock and instead he is a rock in our shoe. Any word on that young guy we received in the Gomez trade?

the only one that wont count against our cap is the ahl. plus the dmen in the ahl cant be worse than him and it willl free up 4 mil or so allowing us to resign staal girardi and prospal when the season ends.

UPDATE
If you didn’t get a chance to listen to Blueshirt Banter Radio last night, EJ Hradek offered a great point of view on the Rangers.
He essentially said the team, while talented, is built poorly and is having a tough time transitioning into Torts’ system. I wrote this piece Monday night, as I mentioned, and I think EJ really hit the nail on the head.
IF, and this is a big if, Sather can land a decent center, I think this team will improve drastically. I am lobbying for Anisimov getting a bigger role with the team (first or second line) as I think his offensive creativity might be a possible spark. But, in the end, I still stand by my personal motto regarding the Rangers front office; which is “End the Sather Era”

Put him up with Prospal and Gaborik, what’s the worst that could happen? The Rangers lose? Been there.

But there is no other center
You want Higgins Callahan or mayeb even Voros as the second line center? Then who takes over the 3rd line or the 4th? Boyle? I don’t think so.

If Anisimov plays first line, Drury can play 2nd line and Boyle third. What difference does it make? You are short a center either way.

Putting him with Prosborik
Will likely get that line to produce even more, but the issue of secondary scoring is still a factor.
AA is producing at a high level while having such atrocious linemates that you don’t need to put him with the 1st line, he should be the 2nd line center. (only Brashear-Boyle-Voros and Drury have had a worse QUALTEAM so far) He could work as a catalyst to get the other guys going. I don’t think Dubinsky can produce the same effect, so he’s better suited to be the 1st line center when he returns.
But AA needs the ice time to do it, which he just hasn’t gotten, presumably b/c he’s atrocious on faceoffs. That would be the one case for having him with Prospal…Prospal can take the faceoffs and then shift to wing after the draw.

Everyone seems worried about secondary scoring
Why not just stack the first line? At least it makes watching the Rangers entertaining for 1/3 of the game. More than I currently get out of them. If Gaborik can score at his current rate, throw Anisimov in there, see if his scoring improves even more. He’s the only one scoring anyways, might as well get him to score even more. Or see if AA can pick it up with the extra space created by being on the ice with Gaborik and Prospal.

you got a good point there.
think about it. last game we saw how anisimov can control the puck and draw men to him. almost like jagr (not there yet though haha)
if he can do that and learn how to be a power forward and stay strong infront of the net, it will give prospal and gaborik a lot of room to get open.
i think its a perfect match

Generally to get new ideas, you need at least a couple new people thinking them up. Messier doesn’t have the power yet, and Torts is only one guy. Some fresh blood in the organization as a whole would be one better idea in my opinion

Parenteau is a waste on the 4th line really
But if you’re not going to send him back (which I don’t think they should), there is a logjam upfront since Lisin isn’t really a 4th line player either.
Nonetheless…I’d rather see:
Prospal-Dubinsky-Gaborik
Avery-Anisimov-Parenteau
Higgins-Drury-Callahan
Lisin-Boyle-Kotalik
At least this way the 3 of 4 lines have an identity….assuming that Drury’s line can lock down someone defensively.
