Rangers News: Stephen Valiquette Waived, Christensen claimed off waivers
After some dismal performances, the changes have begun it looks like, and Stephen Valiquette is first on the chopping block.
The Rangers have placed backup goaltender Stephen Valiquette on waivers and have claimed seventh-year center Erik Christensen off waivers from Anaheim.
Teams have 24 hours to claim Valiquette, who has spent the past four seasons with the Rangers, but has struggled with a 3.74 GAA in six games this season.
Christensen appeared in nine games for the Ducks this season without recording a point, but will receive "an opportunity," as expressed by coach John Tortorella, as Brandon Dubinsky recovers from a broken hand.
The Rangers will call up 23-year-old goaltender Chad Johnson, whom the Rangers received from the Penguins this summer in exchange for a fifth-round pick. Johnson has played 18 games for Hartford (AHL) this season, compiling a 10-6-1 record with three shutouts, a 2.10 goals against average, and a .926 save percentage.
Tortorella also announced an unspecified injury to Donald Brashear.

Not a shocker here
He was solid last year. Not sure what happened.
Last year
He had a d that could cover up his flaws. This year, he had a D that exploited them.

yeah but let’s be honest, this is a guy who has never played a full NHL season. It’s not like they are getting Getzlaf.

true
But at least these are understandable changes. We’d never get Getzlaf and to get anyone huge we’d be pulling the “panic! Trade everyone young with potential!” button that i am sure Sather already has his hand on
It's incredible we could of had Getzlaf but we passed on him for Hugh Jessiman.

I don't think hes NHL ready

Johnson won’t be called up until Friday night, it will save on the cap hit, so that announcement is going to be delayed.
When it comes to waiving players, assume that it will be done ASAP. There may also be a minor trade in the works, probably with one of the lesser salaried players. You don’t just claim a 14th forward for no reason.
End of Voros as we know it?
That’d be kinda nice.

I don’t know. Personally (I have a post coming up at 3pm on this at my site), I think it’s two of Voros, Higgins, Lisin and Boyle and Parenteau.
Only Parenteau doesn’t have to pass through waivers.
i don't think that's true
Some combination of Lisin, Higgins and Parenteau should produce something.
Trading Higgins at roughly the bottom of his possible trade value isn’t the smartest move I’ve ever heard of though.
Boyle being moved makes a lot of sense, since Christensen plays his position. I doubt they’d carry 6 centers when Dubinsky comes back. (if you count Prospal as a center). Be a shame to give up on Boyle this quickly though.
Camp Tortorella - Where Vomit is a Mainstay
by George E. Ays on Dec 2, 2009 2:17 PM EST up reply actions
I hope it would produce something of real value in return, but just do to a quick breakdown:
Lisin- a lot of unfulfilled potential and almost no point production this year
Higgins- pretty much the worst year of his career stat wise
Parentau- 26 year old who spent most of his career in the AHL and only has 1 goal this year
Boyle- not sure what to think, but his numbers are bad, too
Brashear has an acute case of suckitis.
Glen Sather is a Hockey Genius.

So then maybe he’ll be getting 1st line duties right away and see if playing with Gaborik does the same thing for him.

I still think Anisimov is more valuable as the #2 right now, but either way he should be getting top 6 minutes and not line #3 1/2 minutes.

Yup. Boyle, Higgins, Lisin, and a 1st for Malkin.
I mean, I’d do it, so that means the Pens would too.
In nhl2010
I got Columbus to give me Nash and Tyutin for Drury, Rozsival and Parenteau. I don’t see why Sather hasn’t thought of that.

I disagree with that. The Rangers traded from a strength (defense) to address a weakness (scoring). Regardless of how Zherdev turned out, the trade at the time made a lot of sense.
He didn’t score them all at once Matt, LOL
We could use Higgins 23 goals, Callahan’s 23 goals, and so on

I'm still impressed with what "Virtual Sather" pulled off in NHL 10 for me
Rosival to Toronto for Komisarek…and then Rosival being assigned to the Marlies
And Savard centers the Nash-Gaborik pair. (Savard for Kotalik and Redden)
And come to think of it…Boyle-HIggins and a prospect got me Getzlaf at the deadline.
Man, I’m so much better than Sather.

I wouldn't mind giving up:
Boyle, Lisin,Higgins, Parentau or even Girardi (not all of them but a combination of 2 or 3) for either a physical d-man or a #1 center…….I can always keep dreaming hehe
I wouldn’t expect Girardi to last much longer as a Ranger. If he’s here past his 28th birthday, I’ll be surprised.
Well, I’m on the record saying I think he should be packaged in a deal for a forward. I think he is being exploited for his slow feet right now. Granted, he has played much better of late.
I agree and I wouldnt mind giving him up, because it would open up a roster spot for Bobby S./McDonagh or maybe a physical dman
McDonagh

maybe this means brash and voros are gone.
or a combination of like higgins boyle and girardi for a pretty good center. than they can shift AA to the wing.
LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
I think it’s kinda crappy they threw Vally under the bus. Granted he hasn’t been great this year, but he’s only played a few games. I know something has to change, but I don’t see this making that much of a change. OchoCinco is going to sit on the bench most of the season and not improve at all. He should stay in Hartford and get ready for the NHL. He did look good in PS, and didn’t give up many rebounds, but I don’t think he’s ready for the NHL. At least something changed, but I think Vally just became the scapegoat for everyone besides Vinny and Gabby.
He had that one good shut out his first game, but he has been pretty awful. Hank didn’t do that much better the 2nd game against the Pens, but that was on the D.

Yeah, he had one horrible game. Who on the team hasn’t? I don’t think it’s that bad of a move. I just hope it’s one of many. I hope Sather doesn’t do this, and then go back into a coma. Hopefully we can gear up for a big change.

by WalkerNYRanger on Dec 2, 2009 7:52 PM EST up reply actions
Grachev hasn’t figured out/adjusted to the AHL game – there’s no way he’s ready right now for the NHL game. If he was, they’d have brought him up instead of Parenteau.
As for Christensen – he’s not a 4th line center. So, at least temporarily, we’ve added yet another 3rd line center to the mix…..
i remember in the offseason i was crying for the rangers to reason zherdev.
and everyone said no because the way he ended the season. but thats scoring talent we simply dont have this year. we could have really used him right now.
ill tell you this much. higgins 2.5 mil, kotalik 3 mil, zherdev 3.25
i choose zherdev
LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
he was a premadonna.
i wanted to resign zherdev too. but at the price he was asking, there was no other alternative. and afterwards, when it was too late (already signed kotalik) he dropped his asking price. thats zherdev’s fault. let him take his greed to the KHL
Zherdev’s arbitration award was $3.9m
Don’t you find it the least bit interesting that no other NHL team picked him up as an unrestricted free agent? Don’t forget, that arb. award ONLY applied to the Rangers. Anyone else could have signed him for a different (i.e. lower) amount.
As poor a fit as he was with Renney’s system (where he didn’t get involved on defense), he’s a worse fit for the Tortorella system.
I see Dubinsky getting shipped out of here soon....
With Sather seemingly shopping him around in the offseason and Torts having a grudge for the training camp holdout and not very good numbers. Its very possible a package of Dubi, (and anyone of these) Girardi, Lisin, Parenteu, Rozi(wishful thinking), or even Avery. for something nice in return.
def. not avery. hes been great.
you might be on to something though.
dubi lisin girardi for a #1 center maybe.
LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
brad richards is doing pretty well...
i dunno if the rumors were true but I wish we were able to trade rosival and some some other pieces for this guy
Hey Nutz are you nuts? Brad Richards?
The guy makes like almost $8 million a year!!………No f-ing way the Rangers are getting him……a) they cant afford him and b) he is sooo not worth it. Even Glen Sather isnt stupid enough to go and get him…..uhh wait,…….what I should of said was I HOPE he isnt stupid enough! You never know w/ him.
by giantsNYrangers on Dec 4, 2009 12:38 AM EST up reply actions
I saw somewhere else (don’t remember specifically where) a “sources” rumor about a couple of players to Anaheim for Todd Marchant.
The last time his name came up I LOL’d – I can’t see trading anyone – not even Voros – for a 36 yr old who probably isn’t a great fit for Chief Tortorella’s FireWagon hockey…. and my opinion hasn’t changed.
There was a rumor about Higgins for Marchant earlier this year, when Higgins was still goal-less.

From a Pens fan’s perspective, Erik Christensen always struck the Pittsburgh collective as a guy who had a lot of potential but never tapped into it. He has a wicked wrist shot when he wants to actually shoot and is a beast on the shootout. I think he finished up one season 6-for-10 on shootout chances.
He was sent off to Atlanta as part of the deal that brought Hossa to the Pens in Spring 2008. From there I believe he was also used as trade bait the following season and sent to Anaheim, but I don’t remember exactly.
To put it succinctly, he’s a project that never really panned out.
Just figured I’d throw my two cents into the mix.

Hey Frank thats for the 411
I thought there was a reason for a guy who had obvious talent kept being bounced around from team to team…………….for a waiver wire pick up do you think it was worth it for the Rangers to pull this move?
by giantsNYrangers on Dec 4, 2009 12:40 AM EST reply actions
Coming from a fan of a team who just dished off Chris Bourque back to waivers, I think it’s a good move to see your front office at least taking a shot. Bourque came to Pittsburgh with what I feared as unwarranted hype. He failed to impress as he missed wide open nets, shot right into logos and got bullied out of every corner. I don’t regret that move though because at least they know he wasn’t a fit, rather than wondering or regretting it when he scored a few goals against them.
So really, I don’t think it can hurt to take a shot on EC. He needs a lot of encouragement but could be the guy to pick up a game winner every now and then. Worth a shot, right?
