Rangers News: Matt Gilroy recalled from Hartford

I hope those of you that go to Ranger games are buying programs, can't tell the players without a scorecard:

New York, December 20, 2009 -

New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that defenseman Matt Gilroy has been recalled from the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League (AHL).

Gilroy, 25, has recorded four assists in five games with Hartford this season.  He made his AHL debut on December 11 against Portland.  Gilroy returns to the Rangers where he has skated in 30 games this season, tallying four goals and six points, along with 19 penalty minutes.  He ranked second in the NHL among rookie defensemen in goals and was tied for seventh in points at the time of his assignment to Hartford on December 10.  He made his NHL debut on October 2 at Pittsburgh, and tallied his first career point with the game-winning goal on October 5 at New Jersey.

The North Bellmore, New York native was originally signed by the Rangers as a free agent on April 17, 2009.

The Blueshirts return to action tomorrow, December 21, when they will face off against the Carolina Hurricanes at RBC Center (7:00 p.m.), to close out their three game road trip.  Prior to the game, the team's morning skate is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. at RBC Center.  This is the first of four meetings with Carolina this season.  The Rangers have tallied seven power play goals in their last five games for a 33.3% (7-21) success rate.  The game will be televised live on MSG Network and can be heard on 1050 ESPN Radio.

yeah were back to the original 6 we have.

but we have seen we have staal girardi mdz gilroy and heikk who can all play well at the nhl level. im sure sangs can to, he just needs some more adjusting time.

wouldnt it be great if we could rid ourselves of R and R and just play the 6 kids? imagine how good theyd be ina few years..

but still, rozi has been pretty damn good lately. its cause he knows hes next in line to be benched if he starts playing crappy

The Youth Movement

I am all for infusing young guys into the lineup. The fact that Del Zotto and Anismov have been up with the Rangers since day 1 is a huge step in the right direction. But I think too many people got their hopes up with the Heikkenen-Sanguinetti call ups. I think they both have potential. I think what the Rangers have done is a smart move.

First it gives these guys experience. Secondly it sends a message to the underperformers. Basically the Rangers told the vets: “You play like shit, we bench you and let the kids play instead. If you don’t like it then show us why we should put you back in.”

It seems like it worked for Redden who was pissed about being scratched. Hopefully this will shoot some life into his game.

At the same time how the Rangers are handling it is smart because you don’t want to sacrifice a season of Hank, who is playing like a man on a mission, for a complete rebuilding process.

Just my opinion.

Rule #1. Cardio. Rule #2 Double Tap.

Right. They’ve demonstrated the will to sit the veterans, and play the kids. Hopefully this jumpstarts Redden and everyone else.

I kind of wish they keep him on the 4th line he seems to produce there. lol

Kotalik should be on the 4th line and only see PP time. Although with Drury it would be a mighty expensive 4th.

yup lmao

wrong

theve demonstrated they are opposed to playing the kids by making this move after their first two game winning streak in forever

i think it was meant to light a fuse under the vets.

rozi and drury have been good.

lets see if redden and kotalik improve.

well no for sure in a few games. if they dont improve hopefully we bring the young kids up again and send them off for good

If Redden gets a go ok, but if Kotalik gets a go ill be pretty pissed off.

yeah not too sure why

they are rocking the boat after they won two in a row for the first time in forever

probably because we’re playing Carolina. If they can’t perform against the worst team in the league, you’ll know whats next.

by Dougee on Dec 20, 2009 5:55 PM EST up reply actions

everyone like to bash carolina but remember this team w/o gaborik for 2 games, well staal missed 10 and imagine if 15 of our games werent started by Lundqvist as Ward’s injury has meant he only played 20 of their 35 games.

I completely agree … I like the idea of playing rookies but I also dropped a shit load of money on season tix so would like to see some wins too (which normally requires a mix of vets and rookies) … although I thought all our rookie d-men looked good both positionally and physically
