Rangers Analysis: It's Sitting On a Silver Platter, Now Capture It

The Rangers upcoming pre-Christmas schedule presents them with a golden opportunity to get themselves back in the playoff picture. Tonight, they are in Raleigh taking on the last place, that's right, last place Carolina Hurricanes in a game that the Blueshirts should definitely come out of with two points, as long as the effort is there. So you figure they then have 37 points going into Wednesday's tilt with the Florida Panthers, the team holding onto the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference (8th place).

If New York can somehow tie the Panthers in the standings, they will get the nod over Florida being that they will have several games at hand. If they can come away with wins in both of their next two, it is likely that they will pass the streaky Panthers and grab eighth place for themselves. It sitting there on a silver platter, now it is just a matter of executing.

The Rangers have been playing a better product of hockey since the pathetic 2-1 loss to the Islanders last Wednesday, due in part to the new environment in the locker room with coach Tortorella strictly applying his "darwinistic" policy. Either you play consistently or you are benched. It is as simple as that and we know he means business with veterans Wade Redden and Ales Kotalik watching from the press box for the last two games. I like it, and feel that it is a possibility that Torts was being held back from doing this earlier by management, Glen Sather for example. That is just pure speculation, though.

I truly believe if the Blueshirts can come out with starts like they did in Philadelphia on Saturday, retrieving loose pucks, outskating the opponent, and keeping play in the offensive zone, then they will get two points more frequently than they have in the recent past. If this team allows the opponent to control the tempo from the opening faceoff, which tends to be the case much too often, they never seem to recover from that and the entire contest is one giant struggle. That is not a winning formula by any means.

When matching-up with a team like Carolina, it is crucial to jump on them quickly. Their fans are obviously a bit irritated knowing that their 'Canes were a playoff team just a year ago, and now only have nine wins on the season so far in 09-10. In a relatively low-scoring NHL, that first early goal, especially on the road, can go so far against any team, but it will definitely have a major impact on a club that has struggled since opening night.

The Rangers are 1-1 this season against the Panthers, falling on home ice but winning in the shootout when meeting again  in Sunshine, Florida. The Panthers have been up and down the standings for the past month or so, but right now are at an even .500, just like our Blueshirts. This is a team in which the Rangers should defeat if they can capitalize on their scoring chances, but clearly that has not been an easy task for the team this year.

The fact that goaltender Henrik Lundqvist is red-hot and playing out of his mind lately factors into this as well. In the first period on Long Island and in the third period in Philly, Hank took center stage and stood on his head, making saves on just about anything and everything that was thrown his way. When this is the case, the Rangers always have a higher probability of winning than losing. If they can come away with victories in these next two games and re-enter the playoff picture, the entire struggle can be put behind them and they can start fresh after Christmas when they clash with the Islanders at Madison Square Garden on the 26th.

What happens when....

Redden continues to play not up to Torts requirements? he gets benched again? What if the way he is playing right now is the best he can do? Will Torts bench him for the whole season? He is pretty much untradeable and even buying him out is costly. I think sending him to the AHL would best…he has a bright future there :)

i wish we would do that..

if he stands true to the best 18 skaters on the ice, and redden gets outplayed by heikk or sangs, than so be it

LET'S GO RANGERS!!!

AHL seems like the way to go. He might not go there this season, but eventually he is destined to end up in the AHL. He is very average and bad at times right now…he is getting older so his play will most likely keep heading south…

I hope Torts lives up to his word. If this guy keeps stinking it up then send him down or bench him. Only thing is…If we send him down can’t a team claim him and then screw us for half his contract?

by fromthe51hate on Dec 21, 2009 11:02 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I m not sure how that works….anybody know?

by MattPwrcf1 on Dec 21, 2009 11:19 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i believe...

redden has to go thru waivers so each team has a chance to claim him before he goes to the ahl…the same goes for if the rangers decide to call him up from the ahl…each team will get a chance to claim him…if a team decides to claim him they will pay for half the contract and the rangers will pay the other half…so the rangers will be resposible for 3.25mill for the rest of the contract

by nutz_35 on Dec 21, 2009 11:31 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Re-entry

As I understand it….

If a team claims him on the way down to the AHL, they’re on the hook for the entire contract.

When they recall him, then he goes through re-entry waivers where they could stick the Rangers with 1/2 the contract.

So no, he’s not going to the AHL unless it’s a permanent move.

You are correct.

Full salary/cap hit if claimed on the way down.
One-half if claimed on the way up (re-entry waivers).

by dbmaven on Dec 21, 2009 11:40 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I think you re right Smurf, its on re-entry where we have to pay half, it was the same when we claimed Avery from Dallas.

Either way, as far as I m concerned Wade can start packing his bags now, I can even help him lol

by MattPwrcf1 on Dec 21, 2009 11:41 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

cool

thanks for clearing that up…so sending him down is the best move…redden still get paid…the rangers free up 6.5mill…what does redden care…he doesnt even show much life on the ice…i know he’s been ok this year but no where near the contract numbers…and i think sather sending redden down to help this team shows that he’s trying to keep his job and produce a winning team instead of just leaving him there not doing anything

by nutz_35 on Dec 21, 2009 11:49 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t think any NHL organization is willing to pony up full contract $$$ for a player to “finish it out” in the AHL. Maybe for a marginal player who at least has some value as an emergency 3rd or 4th line call-up – but certainly not to the tune of $26+ million for the next 4 1/2 years – even if it does free 100% of the contract off the cap hit.

I could be wrong – the Dolans might be crazy enough to do this. But with MSG being spun off into a separate company (from Cablevision and the other Dolan holdings) – I doubt they’d want that on the books.

by dbmaven on Dec 21, 2009 12:24 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

trust me no one would take Redden on the way down

There would definitely be a buyer on the way up, so if he goes down, he’s down for the rest of the season.

by goodieNY on Dec 21, 2009 2:42 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That would take some cajones to send him down… You think Sather is willing to admit that mistake?

by fromthe51hate on Dec 21, 2009 3:08 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i would imagine rozy or pretty any dman having a bad game and being benched. im glad everyone is being accounted for. You know i understand why drury has been given a pass so to speak. For one drurys style doesnt mesh with torts style. two.. drury has a lot of heart torts knows that.. three he was made captian before torts got there… and finally that contract stops torts from not scratching him anyway. moving him to the fourth line is the move that really has been working anyway.

you know, I recall every situation like this in the last ten years. Looking forward to what games we should win and then blowing it. Sorry to sound negative but this team is a tease, never really reaching its full potential while making you think it can be awesome. Typical NY sports team looks great on paper.

Anyone heard about the rumor of Flyers shopping Jeff Carter? Supposedly he had an affair with Hartnel’s wife hehe

would be awesome to have him, he would be our #1 center, but he could be pricy to acquire and I think the flyers are looking for a goalie and we cant help them there

by MattPwrcf1 on Dec 21, 2009 11:49 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

unless the rangers...

unless we give them redden and rosival i want no part of dealing with the flyers…i would hate it if we gave them chad johnson and he turned out to be a lundqvist type…they would win the cup….but if they want vally, rosival, and sangs and a first pick…i say go for it…but i doubt that would happen

matt where did you hear this?

I was talking to some massive Philly fans (The Phantoms AHL play close to me and I go up for games)… They said that this has to be a rumor because the other night one of them scored a goal and the other ran right over to him and was super happy. If a guy was banging your wife there is no way you’d be happy for him. Unless you really hated your wife. Or…they are swingers… who knows it’s Philly.

anyway…thnx for the update

We could have a new movie script on our hands “Indecent Hockey Proposal” Jeff Carter: “How many goals do I have to score… to score with your wife…”

Think NHL Network said it..

I also heard this rumor. Heard it on NHL Network or The Rangers broadcast this weekend.

We totally could of had Jeff Carter in the Vlad Malakhov trade a few years back

If Slats had the balls to ask for him. the Flyers were “going for it” that year and could of been obtained. I totally 4get who we did get in that trade. Must not of been any1 worthwhile.

8- Rangers trade Vladimir Malakhov to Philly for Rick Kozak and a 2nd round pick in 2005.

The 2nd rounder wasn’t Sauer either (that pick came part of the Leetch trade), it was Marc-Andre Cliche

rangers and carolina

i think the rangers have a good shot at winning with a few exceptions you are facing cam ward who can be great when he has to but the rangers are playing together as a team for a change since tortorella’s dressing down and moving chris drury to the fourth line was not a bad idea now he is scoring in bunches which is good so maybe the tirade worked

watch out...

Don’t take the Canes for granted. Already looking to Florida? Tsk, tsk. It’ll bite you!

I know this will sound bad but...

I really hope Redden has a terrible game tonight and is assigned permanently to the AHL

I was thinking the same thing

btw, larry brooks’ “crybaby redden” headline was sweet,I hope he read it.

Tonights game

just read up on SI.com that Redden will be back in the lineup tonight and this is his final chance before demoting this waste to Hartford. I just don’t get it..just send him down!! he is not gonna to play a hard tough game every night after playing soft his whole career…Thank you Sather..

by gene4240 on Dec 21, 2009 5:32 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I agree with you, I think he might play better for a couple of games but later will go back to his old ways. I just dont see him improving, he is only getting older so I actually expect him to keep getting worse. He will be an All Star in the AHL though, bright career ahead….good luck Wade and start packing!!! lol

by MattPwrcf1 on Dec 21, 2009 5:46 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I have some extra luggage I would gladly give to him to pack. If and when new management takes over (hoping and assuming next year) they would have to figure out a way to move at least two of these big contracts because the rangers will not have money under the cap to keep some key players and that is my biggest fear.
