Ranger Recap: Rangers 4 Panthers 1
The Rangers—looking to win four games in a row for the first time since the beginning of the season—walked into Madison Square Garden having lost five in a row on home ice. They broke that streak tonight playing an overall great game and winning their 4th game in a row.
The opening period was, in certain respects, a "regression and redemption" period for a few of the players. In the redemption portion we saw Enver Lisin play one of the best periods of his short Ranger career, hustling to negate an icing and then setting up a Chris Drury goal; he also drew a penalty and was flying all over the ice. Chris Drury also finds himself in the redemption category scoring yet another goal (he seems to be heating up no?) to tie things up for the Rangers.
Michael Rozsival, on the other hand, headlines our regression segment. Dominic Moore was driving hard to the net (covered by Michael Del Zotto) and threw a shot on the net which trickled into the slot, where Rozsival—who wasn’t even watching the play—skated by it (not before slowing it down) and allowed Victor Oreskovich to score his second goal of the year. Rozsival also turned the puck over a few times which lead to Panther scoring chances, overall it was a poor first period for him.
The Rangers came out flat in the second period, allowing the Panthers to cycle the puck at will in their defensive zone. For anyone who was listening to the Blueshirt Banter Radio Holiday Show, please remember what me and DBMaven (2 mentions in one day!) were saying about the need for defense instead of offense to stop those types of issues. Just call it Joe and DBmaven 1 Mandar 0, for those of you who are keeping score. Regardless the Rangers found their game in the middle of the period taking over the game and being rewarded when Vaclav Prospal scored his 7th on the power play. It should also be noted that Henrik Lundqvist had to make some absolutely jaw-dropping saves in order to keep the Rangers in this one.
You really can’t start off a period better than the way the Rangers started the third, with Prospal scoring his second of the game just 23 second into the period. Brandon Dubinsky continued his great play adding an assist on the goal, giving him three points in the last two games. It’s pretty amazing how much Dubinsky solidifies this line-up.
Shortly after the midway mark of the third Chris Drury (who had one of the best games I can remember) made some brilliant plays shorthanded before leading Marian Gaborik who buried his 26th goal of the year.
Empty Netters:
-
Although Rozsival had an awful first period he tightened up from the second period on. Nice to see him playing at least relatively well.
-
I don’t think you can say enough about Marian Gaborik, and to be honest nothing I say here will give what he does for this team any justice, so I will just say that he is a God and leave it at that.
-
Christopher Higgins is simply becoming frustrating to watch. He works himself into open space, he maneuvers himself into a shooting lane and he either fans on the shot or shoots it into the goalies chest. I’m getting sick of him.
-
Michael Del Zotto had a solid game offensively but my goodness does he lay the lumber. On two or three occasions he threw a Panther to the ice with some awesome hits.
-
Sean Avery had a brilliant game tonight. He has shaken off the rust since the start of the year and has turned into the Avery of old. He has been one of the few sparks on this team from the get-go.
-
Matt Gilroy has answered his five game stint in Hartford with two very solid games for the Rangers, he wants to be here and deserves to be here.
-
By the way what was the infatuation by Sam and Joe with Michael Del Zotto’s family holiday dinner? They talked about it every five minutes. What guys, you two don’t make enough money to scrape up some cash for a pasta dinner in New York?
-
Ryan Callahan and Artem Anisimov both had very solid games for the Rangers without hitting the score sheet.
-
Also how good has Henrik Lundqvist been these past 10 games? The Rangers might not have won all of them but Lundqvist has had a sub 2 GAA in the past 10 game and was once again brilliant tonight.
Okay boys another good one tonight, have at it!

Gaborik is a Magician
he somehow finds ways to get the puck in the net when there is absolutley no way a human being should be able too. Its almost like he has the will for the puck to go in so it goes in. Its absolutley amazing to me.
also the Del Zotto pasta thing was really funny, Sam and Joe must have been deprived of pasta as children.
is it just me
or does vinny prospal seem to have a lot of fun out there…hes excited wen his teammates score a goal and when he does (obviously) and he is always producing and looking for open teammates
He’s having a great time (when they win) – because in July he wasn’t sure if his playing days were over.
Can you imagine the idiocy in Tampa buying him out? Makes some of Sather’s dumb moves look downright acceptable….
My First Post *applause*
Prospal is one of those guys who still remembers he’s playing a GAME and getting paid quite well to do just that. So many players today go about it like they’re punching a clock, which makes me sick since i really do punch a clock and would kill to play hockey.
If Drury wasnt picking up his game I’d nominate Prospal for the C. Him, Gabi, and Dubinsky looks sick, Torts better not juggle them…

Overall excellent game played.
Gotta say…MVP of this one probably was Lundqvist, but Enver Lisin deserves a lot of votes too, this dude can flat out create when he’s out there.
Penalty kill was outstanding as usual.
Nice to see Prospal get on the board again.
My NY teams have been delivering some nice Christmas presents lately…

"I just saw Avatar, and Sean Avery was hands down the best character!"
Wow, what a great game. Everyone was playing better. I saw Kotalik actually skate a little and even get back on an odd man rush, and even Brashear played better. I can’t believe what a team player Vinny is. He had two goals for the whole 3rd period and was just looking for the pass every shift. Cally had another amazing game. I wonder if he wasn’t paired with Higgy if he wouldn’t be doing better even strength. Also the Staal and Girardi combo was awesome tonight. Florida’s first line has been great as of late, and they stopped them cold. I also have been loving the fire Avery has been playing with lately. That line of Avery-Drury-Lisin was pretty solid all game. I thought Lisin looked more comfortable this game, was creating chances, and drew a penalty too. Henrik is the truly the King. Can we lock him up till 2020 now? Gabby is truly a God. Dubi had a great game too. Christmas came a little early.

Great Win
The best of the four game win streak, basically because this was a complete game played by our boys. Very satisfying victory, one of the more satisfying ones of the season in fact.

Stall is our Chris Chelios
Nothing flashy, but everything well. I hope the other younger D watch his positioning and stick work. Plus close their eyes when Redden does the same. ;)
how about one of those really long ones. i think we came up w something like 13/50. his offense may never be great but when guys like Komisarek get 4.25 a year to get Staal for just under 4 mil for his whole career it’s a bargain.
by Michael Gleich on Dec 24, 2009 1:08 AM EST up reply actions
yeah i would love that type of deal.
10/35 or 15/55
something like that would be great
LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
If I'm Marc Staal.....
there’s no way I sign a deal like that.
What’s the incentive for him?? Torts will go back to pushing him to be more offensive as the entire team settles into “the system”. If he matures as expected, embraces that role and produces offensively, he’s worth a whole lot more.
Staal should get a 2 or 3 year deal like Dubi or Cally. Rewards his current contribution level, and leaves plus/minus room depending on his performance for the duration of the contract. That’s fair for both sides.
Three minor suggestions...
1. Have the defensemen take a little more risk out there. Our forwards are back in gear, but the D is still too conservative. A little more assertiveness, and we can strike fear into opponents more based on a transition game.
2. Move Higgins to the point on the Powerplay. He’ll see the ice better, get a better chance to sync up his offense.
3. Either put Kotalik in more challenging defensive situations (ie PK) or simply cut him. He simply lacks stick handling confidence based on too few touches in pressure situations. A confident Kotalik rips that breakaway into a top left corner.
LOL
Thanks for the “2-in-1” mention there, Joe. ;-)
As much as I’ve been all over Rozsival, I think you’re being just a tad harsh on him for that first (and only, thanks to Hank) Florida goal. Equal justice needs to be dispensed for Callahan not backchecking forcefully enough to keep Orescovich (sp?) from getting to that puck.
Rozsival did bear down from that point – and I can only remember screaming his name once after that ("WTF!!!! ROZI!!!! )*&#($@#&$()) Redden only earned that scream twice as I recall – he was “serviceable” – nothing outstanding – just what you’d expect from a 3mm/year defenseman (Oooops!)
Lisin seems to finally be healthy – the foot must be healed and he’s feeling it. He was all over the ice and created several opportunities for himself and others. Drury – it seems – has stopped thinking and is going on instinct – and it’s making a difference.
Not a lot to complain about – but the 1st star clearly is Hank (again). He’s rounded into form after a shaky October and part of November. Without him – as good as they played in front of him – it could be 6-4 Florida.
Lisin, Drury, Dubinsky all healthy for a bit now – and it’s showing. I think the “secondary scoring” issues may be behind us – and Higgins is going to go on a run after the Holidays. Stick with him – you won’t be sorry.
I’d still like to see Christensen get a fair shot with 3rd line minutes – but right now probably isn’t the time to fool with the lines. (Wait – Torts NEVER does that, right ?)
Happy Holidays everyone – nice going into the short break on a high note!
4 in a row ..
ever since torts blasted every player we are on a 4 game roll and the king is playing like one and how about drury catching fire this is why torts is a great coach you dont play up to your standards then you sit or get the f out . oh and one more thing boy is gaborik awesome merry xmas to everyone on blueshirt banter and lets go rangers …..
my theory on last 4 games
Someone put an “Elf on the Shelf” in the Rangers locker room.
Merry Christmas everyone.

Merry Christmas ... but;
It was good the see the Rangers come out with a little more heart and emotion for last night’s game. They looked like a team that was a little more determined not to let the past trials define their season. (Sounds like the Giants!) But there’s work still to be done. I was amused to hear Torts preaching for a more defensive minded system; didn’t I hear Tom Renney say that a few times? I would be excited to see Torts change his stripes a little and turn into more of a counter puch team and less of a run and gun one. We don’t have the offensive horses to “outskill opponents”. I’m still a little concerned with their inability to come out of their zone effectively. Watch the next game and see if you can break down their breakout scheme? It reminds me of pick-up hockey.
I am excited about 8 points though, and agree with Rozi and Redden’s assessment. A little more attention to detail by Rozi and Hank would have put up the doughnut hole. I still can’t understand how Rozi keeps leading this team D in playing time? Well, hopefully they can keep building confidence and going to the net … Nice comment about Santa’s sleigh Dougee , we couldn’t be so lucky.
why is everyone getting on Rozy
hes been okay of late

Not 25 minutes of ice time ok
That’s the frustrating part, at least for me.

Money Talks
Personally, I think everyone gets on him because it’s tough to justify paying top dollar for a player who play’s “okay” once in a while…I’d rather see them get somebody big to clear the road in front of Henrik
He has shown a little improvement, but the team as a whole has stepped their game up, so I dont think he’s moved up any quicker than any other defender. I think Redden’s giving more than Rosival since his little tiff, how about that 2 on 1 he broke up last night?

What's Different In the Last 4?
Well, for one thing….DUBINSKY IS BACK. I still don’t think that he’s a #1, but damn are we a different team with him in the lineup. The cynics will say that only shows how weak we are up the middle, and they are right. But that doesn’t change the fact that he is an impact kind of player.
