Rangers Analysis: Key Players Returning to Form

The current four-game winning streak has seen many of the Rangers top players return to form and begin to play top-notch hockey once again. It is pretty evident that this team does not succeed if the players that are relied on the most do not perform to the best of their ability and get the job done on a consistent basis. That very problem played a big part in the struggles of November and early December, but ever since Coach John Tortorella started enforcing the "no entitlement" policy, it seems like everyone has upped the ante, even if it is only a little bit. That makes the difference between winning and losing in a sport that is so tightly played, and we are seeing that with our Rangers as we speak.

Henrik Lundqvist, undoubtedly the most important player on this club, was one of those individuals not playing like himself in November. The Swedish star was getting criticized for allowing soft goals and not coming up with the big saves when they were needed, something that was pointed out by Tortorella. However, starting with the 2-1 win over the Buffalo Sabres in Buffalo a few weeks back, Henrik Lundqvist has been Henrik Lundqvist, and that consists of amazing saves and standing on his head night in and night out.

Heading into the season, critics were saying that Henrik cannot be the story every night for this team. Well guess what? When he isn’t the story, the team loses, so I think that mentality needs to be rethought. Lundqvist has not had much offensive support, but still manages to hold a 2.41 goals against average and a .923 save percentage. That puts him at eighth in the league in save percentage, a remarkable stat for a goalie on a team that has not been too hot this season. If Henrik is playing well, this does not win. That is the bottom-line and as much as people continue to say Hank cannot be the story every night, he will always be the story if this club is winning.

For example, in the four game winning streak, Lundqvist has faced 141 shots, making saves on 136 of them. That is a .965 save percentage through four games, not something just any goalie can do in this league no matter what team they play on. The Rangers are in the middle of a fight for a playoff spot, but they have a tremendous edge over other teams if they have goaltending like this.

Marc Staal has turned things around on defense, after playing the worst hockey of his career to begin the season. Let’s get something straight about Marc Staal. He is not a flashy defenseman, and not one that is known for his offensive capabilities, but rather a solid blueliner in his own end and in front of his goaltender--Sort of like a Chris Chelios. That being said, I truly believe the thought of having to produce and score goals like Tortorella requested got him off his game, but ever since readjusting his focus, he is looking like the stellar defenseman that is used in crucial situations and put out there against inferior opponents.

Then there is Captain Chris Drury. Drury had a below-par season last year, and started this season off the same way with only two points in the first eighteen games. Within the four game winning streak, Chris has registered three goals and an assist, combining for four points. If the Captain can continue to produce at a pace like this, it will boost the confidence of the entire team. I have always been a Drury supporter and do not feel it is his fault he was handed a $7 million contract. The guy has heart and wants nothing more than for this team to win. I really hope he can continue to play like this and produce on a consistent basis.

Alternate Captain Ryan Callahan, who I spoke about yesterday, is yet another player who has turned things around. Expectations were set high for Cally with him coming off of a career year last season. At first, he was not even close to meeting those expectations, but now has six points in his last ten games, four in his last four. This puts the Rochester native on pace for yet another 20-goal season, but I feel he could hit the 25-30 range if he can continue to score goals like he has the past two or three weeks.

In the end, this all adds up and equals to a winning team. The Rangers are not going to win off of Marian Gaborik goals; they need support from all areas and all lines, not just one. There are still several things wrong with this club, and there are gaps that need to be filled as well as problems that need to be fixed, but for now, the Blueshirts are finally looking like a team, and most importantly, one that is winning games. On that note, enjoy your Christmas Eve everyone!

Dumbfounded

Whilst meandering around the interwebs I stumbled upon this motivating Rangers blog. Not being a Rangers fan but being a hockey fan, I decided to give it a read, as I wanted to know about the game last night. Then I read this post and my jaw dropped. After kissing Lundqvist’s golden skate blades you compared Marc Staal to Chris Chelios. Are you out of your mind? You have to work your way up to that kind of status… why not just say Del Zotto looks like Rafalksi or Anisimov looks like Lemiuex.

Get off your high horse. I will not give this blog another shot anytime soon. Rangers fans are always the same. When you’re down on a player, he doesn’t even deserve to shine your shoes for a halfpence, but when you’re up on a player he’s “a god.” Good luck when your "god"’s glass legs shatter like all your hopes come playoff time season in and season out. I bet you think you’re in the running for Kovalchuk too!

your team must be doing bad...

How is a person able to compare a players ability without some kind of measuring stick? Furthermore, you want a completely objective analyst of a game? Just go look up the box scores…That will give you all the info you want. Nice and vanilla as to not offend your delicate sensibilities. We aren’t robots we have a passion. We are f*ckin Rangers fans! I feel sorry for the team that has fans with no zeal… “Johnny Whoever scored a goal today… it’s his 5th of the season. He had a decent game…All and all a mediocre effort…good for him”. Wow I wish every blog was like that… Such interesting reading, nice and melancholy! And who isn’t in the running for Kovalchuk? What your team can’t use a 40-50 goal scorer? –pwnd!

Perhaps you are "comprehension" challenged.....

The comparison was not to set Marc Staal up as an equal to Chris Chelios.

Look at it again – more closely.

Let’s get something straight about Marc Staal. He is not a flashy defenseman, and not one that is known for his offensive capabilities, but rather a solid blueliner in his own end and in front of his goaltender—Sort of like a Chris Chelios.

That’s not saying he’s Chelios’ equal, or that he will have a career like Chelios. It’s saying that he fills a similar role to the one that Chelios filled on many of the teams he played for.

If you really read the articles, posts, and commentary here, you’d have found that, by and large, Ranger fans are brutally honest – emphasis on BRUTAL – when it comes to critiquing the team, the players, and their play.

So, in the spirit of the Season – welcome to Blueshirt Banter.

But since we’re a brutally honest crowd – don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

Great Blog!

This is, for sure, the best of the ranger blogs. The analysis on here has really helped me understand the team and the sport of hockey. Of course there is passion, disagreement and debate when a team goes on a month long spiral that knocks them from being considered one of the elite teams in the league to barely a playoff contender. Of course we’re pissed off and questioning everything from the organization to the coaching staff to individual performances. My pops took me to my first ranger game in the garden back in ‘74. When all is said and done, aside from a few stalwart loyalists whose names will hang from our rafters and in our memories, we’ll probably outlast Torts, 99% of the players on the team and even this ownership.

The Rangers are OUR team.

Happy Holidays!

Amen.

To be a bid simplistic, it’s nice to have a site where one can have ‘fun’ while living/dying with the Blueshirts. Even more so being a displaced fan in the Land o’ Poor Hockey.

Actually

I really enjoy the upbeat feel of most of the articles on this blog. It’s really easy to find the negative but harder to find the positive.

Yeah you guys deserve a pat on the back. Most of the other crap blogs out there are terrible. Not to mention you guys have some really good insight and the posts are actually constructive.

…err.. Most of the other blogs are terrible crap… not that this is a crap blog. Too much egg nog.

Hear, hear!

Other than that one instance (from the one who shall remain nameless), I’m yet to see a post on here that took someone’s head off. Yes, some of our trade rumoring and line combos are a bit ‘out there,’ but that’s half the fun! The liberty to actually post ‘what if’s’ insights, ponderances without fearing some good ol’ boys’ club.

This blog rocks. Kudos to Jim and Joe for engendering a constructive atmosphere.

by pslieber on Dec 26, 2009 1:39 AM EST up reply actions

Exactly. The team has struggled but is currently on a 4-game win streak heading into the holidays, so I thought it would be nice to point out the positives throughout this streak.

Whoever that first commentor is has some problems that need to be taken care of. ;)

Ohhhh...Snap!

That was a huge win last night. I watched the first period and had to leave not feeling very good about things. I was checking my phone every 10 seconds. I’m sure they are very relieved to get a substantial home victory. Hank is unreal lately.

Looks lik someone got coal for Christmas...

“you compared Marc Staal to Chris Chelios. Are you out of your mind? You have to work your way up to that kind of status… why not just say Del Zotto looks like Rafalksi or Anisimov looks like Lemiuex.”

Thanks for trolling. Everyone loves bitter fans from other teams. Also, please learn how to spell the players’ names you’re indicating as legendary.

As the guy who posted the message about Staal, ‘reminds me of’ equates to ‘reminds me of.’ Unless you’re Eric Weinrich who skated alongside him, I don’t believe one person’s opinion is more/less valid then another’s. Even more so since this fan has been attending and watching hockey for almost 3 decades. If you are Eric Weinrich, please send me an autographed puck.

Also, we get tons of fans from opposing teams who post constructively (praise and criticism) on here…and vice-versa. That’s what makes this forum fun. We even welcome Devlis fans on here, despite my pleas otherwise. :)

Finally – and as someone who reads other SB nation/sports blogs: this is one of the few that doesn’t make these posts personal. Ever. I can’t say the same for other options where the flamewars/overanalysis is taken to an extreme.

In the spirit of the Holiday Season, welcome to the sight, Tommy, and post away. We bash on our team enough (see: Redden); you’re welcome to chime in. If you start insulting individual posters, however, I would surmise a site ban in the New Year, unfortunately.

Still, prove us all wrong, friend. We hope you do.

I mean… if he just kinda parked himself by the crease… and they fired pucks at him and he just kept spinning around… it may work… it would be like that game Cross Fire. On second thought…Chris don’t try this. Merry Merry everyone!!

Brash could just stare down the goalie and pound his fists together. I mean it wouldn’t be the Avery rule but that would unsettle them.

Has anyone seen the highlight of Kovalchuk scoring a goal and then sliding on his knees doing like a guitar thing in front of the Kiss banner? It may be the best thing I’ve ever seen.
