Rangers News: Can you play defense? Can you do it cheap? Call Glen.....
So according to Andrew Gross, Wade Redden skated today, but does not look comfortable in contact drills (insert joke here), meaning he probably won't be ready to go Saturday night.
This leaves the Rangers with a bit of a sticky wicket. With the addition of Chad Johnson and Erik Christensen's salaries to the payroll, even with the subtraction of Steve Valiquette, the Rangers do not have the cap space to call up anyone, like Bobby Sanguinetti.
From Andrew's story:
The quick story on the numbers, though. The Rangers, who reportedly had about $800,000 of wiggle room, did substract Valiquette’s $725,000 but Johnson is on the books for a reported $660,000 and Christensen is at $750,000 so the Rangers must figure out how to squeeze another defenseman onto their roster. The brass is working on that now.
Perhaps the Rangers will have to shed Aaron Voros and his $900,000 salary. Or Brian Boyle at $500,000.
Rangers may be looking for a defenseman on Craig's List by day's end.

Problemmmm
Blueshirt Banter: Covering the New York Rangers the only NHL team with three home arenas.
Screw it
Make Drury our 6th defenseman. He’s ineffective as a forward lately anyway.

The Rangers are currently $214,000 over the cap. They need to LTIR Brashear or Dubinsky if they don’t plan on moving anyone.
Maybe a dumb question, but
Is there a downside to putting Dubi on the LTIR?

If you’re looking at CapGeek (like I am) I suspect that’s because they’re showing Valiquette still on the roster with Chad Johnson also there. I don’t think Johnson has officially been called up yet – it’s probably effective tomorrow.
Oops, I read that graph wrong.
When Vally gets removed, the Rangers will have $250k in cap room available.
I spent about two hours writing a post on the pros and cons of buying out Rozsival, numbers are fuzzy right now lol
But that does no good until after the season is over – the ‘buyout period’ is something like 15 days starting around July 1, right?
June 15-30. We are going to hear a lot about buying out Rozsival in the coming months, I wanted to write about it.
I love the business of the game (as if you couldn’t tell already)
They’re both showing in the calculations for the ACTIVE roster.
Valiquette’s numbers hitting the projected cap final as if he were remaining on the active roster, which as of tomorrow he will not.
Johnson has not been added to the active roster as of this point.
how about this.
send voros down and put brash on the litr.
than well have enough money to call up sangs.
and when dubinsky comes back we will be set with 13 forwards and 7 dmen.
LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
good point dave.. so then someones gotta go. 15 forwards is a bit much. i mean u can do it but i doubt they will.
oh and quick not. duncan keith signed a 13 year 72 mill deal today.
little ridiculous with these longtermdeals huh?
LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
Can’t blame the GMs for exploiting a blatant loophole in the CBA. I have no problem with teams doing this to retain home grown talent.
Plus, I want the Hawks to stay together, they are really fun to watch. If they can shed that Brian Campbell albatross of a contract, they will be able to keep that team together for a long time.
im not saying i have a problem with it. its smart.
im just saying their a bit ridiculous. not so much for keith cause hes young and will be able to play strong through the 13 years. but hossa?
will kane and toews were both resigned for 5 years, so it seems sharp will be the odd man out. he would be a nice top line center :)
LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
Sharp is a C
And Keith is 26 idk if i wanna pay a defenseman 5.5 million dollars till he is 39 … oh wait

In this picture, Torts looks like he is about to a big poop……just sayin’
Interesting update....
Here’s a copy/paste from Twitter:
@AGrossRecord
#NYRangers recall D Ilkka Heikkinen from Hartford because Wade Redden not likely to be ready for Saturday’s game at Buffalo.
we need a physical defenseman
not peoples eyes gouged out all over the ice

Dubi will LTIRed and the equivalent of his salary will pay for the new moves in the short term. there is no downside to this since he has already missed the required days and games to qualify to return from LTIR whenever he is ready.
finally glen sathers awful contracts are catching up to him. maybe now they can throw him off the boat and get someone in there who will cut the fat and give this team a chance for the future.
speaking of catching up
where the hell have you been?

Anybody else find it “interesting” that instead of Sanguinetti, they’re bringing Heikkinen up??
It could be nothing more than giving him a look for a couple of games to see how he does at the NHL level.
It could be that they’ve seen what that wanted out of Sanguinetti and are giving up on him.
It could be that they’re giving other GMs a chance to scout them at the NHL level and are getting ready to pull the strings on a deal if someone’s interested for “multiple players”.
Lot’s of “what if’s” – I certainly don’t have answers…..
As I said – anything is possible – we won’t know until something does (or doesn’t) happen.
An interesting stat found on Zipay’s blog:
The 25-year-old Heikkinen, signed as a free agent last May, was 5-11-16 in 24 games in Hartford and second in shots.
Could be that they’re looking for more shots from the D – and this guy can provide that. Whether he’ll be a continuation of the “defensive liability corps” is the real question….
It's probably as simple as your first option
Tortorella has said that the biggest thing in his mind regarding rookies is getting them accustomed to the speed of the NHL game.
Giving Sangs and now Heineken a game or three at the NHL level is very likely part of a developmental plan.

Hey Smurf...............Heineken? Got something on your mind bro?...lol.

Deliberate typo
I’ve called him Guinness, Heineken, AmstelLight..and a few other things already. His name lends itself to really terrible comedy.
