Rangers Recap: Blackhawks defeat Lundqvist 2-1

What can you really say about a game like this? The New York Rangers were dominated for a full 60 minutes, blew a one goal lead late in the third, continuously handed out power plays (which is incidentally how they blew the lead) and lost. I am not happy about this game but I am so numb to this team right now that it doesn't matter.

Chris Higgins opened the scoring with a beautiful goal off of a pretty feed from--you guessed it--Marian Gaborik. But from that point forward the Blackhawks dominated play and literally had continuous pressure on the Rangers. Henrik Lundqvist must have read Nick's story about him, because he played the best game I have seen in a long time. Once again the boys let you down tonight Hank.

As usual I have a little bone to pick with John Tortorella who benched Artem Anisimov after a bad penalty in the third but apparently saw nothing wrong with Chris Drury bear-hugging a Hawk in the neutral zone to start the third period penalty parade.

You know as this season continues to spiral out control I wonder when John Tortorella is going to snap. How he can sit there and keep saying "I thought we played well we just didn't get the result" is beyond me. He needs to do something, make a point, make a stand. Maybe Michael Rozsival should have been scratched for Ikka Heikkinen.

As for you Glen Sather maybe you should do something, and if you are trying to do something then try harder please. You have watched this team for 30 games, please do something.

Empty Netters:

  • Why is John Tortorella putting Chris Drury and Michael Rozsival out there on the power play. If you don't want to score on the power play John just decline the penalty.
  • Did you laugh out loud when Joe suggested that Drury would score in OT because he "scores clutch goals"? I did.
  • Marian Gaborik trys to hard to help this team. He got back before Matt Gilroy did on the game winning goal, it says something about his character.
  • Tell me Tortorella isn't losing this team after that game? Did you see all of those penalties in the third? The old Tortorella would have had someone's head on the bench and then taken his anger out on the media.
  • Also I am beginning to re-think this Sean Avery on the first line thing. He doens't have the scoring touch to help Gaborik produce and since no one else is scoring other teams are blanketing Gabby thus Avery can't make him room.
  • Jesus this team has problems.

I'm done. Vent please.

you talk about declining the penalty…after an effort like that they should decline the point because other than hank they certainly dont deserve it.

i couldnt agree more with all those points.
sather has single handedly created THE worst team i’ve ever seen.

torts is losing his team. what happened to the FIRE! the PASSION!

gone. i think torts is as numb as we are. i really just think torts needs to scratch the underachievers (aka more than half the roster) and call up a whole bunch of kids from the AHL. radical yes, but c’mon. its pathetic. they have had NO heart for MORE than a month. hawks didnt win, rangers lost…lost bad.

p.s. redden had a FANTASTIC game. holy crap its the best i’ve seen him!

really?

i thought rozy played his best game yet.Hank was solid in keeping his ground, alot of shots yes and a great game by him but ive seen him play better games(not taking this one away from him but just saying tht hes played numerous games were he had to make more quality stops)torts losing his team?this is the first site ive been hearing this on.ridiculous, its the players!going into this game i was expectig to be blown out.i knew the hawks were stacked and we pretty much had a skim to none chance of winning or scoring more than 1 or 2 goals. ill take the point simply because this team does not have enough firepower-or atleast its not producing to its potential which im not sure i even believe. Not enough chemistry and simply no pat kanes or toews or versteegs or hossas or byufligiens(no idea how to spell it) on this team except for gabby right now. the rookies are just rookies and they need to develop more in the next year and im completely fine with that and thats basically what i expected. tonight they didnt play a great game.tonight they barely had any chances.and just like i read one hawks site(i think the one on sbnation)all “the rags are gonna do is try to score a goal and ride lundqvist the rest of the way”<—not exact quote but along those lines. ill take the point.i dont need to vent..atleast not after this game because i wasnt expecting much against the hawks.

I sort of agree with you even though the way you wrote your post made it almost impossible to read. I don’t get where this sudden animosity towards Drury came from, he’s playing like he always has there’s just no one around for him to free load goals off of…he’s not a star, he plays good defense and scores garbage goals that result from people with great hands generating chances; it’s not like he signed this contract or became captain a month ago and it’s not like he held Glen Sather hostage for it either. Drury is playing with two guys currently who score by crashing, unfortunately none of them are good passers or particularly skilled so they don’t get anything done offensively. I don’t see how you can say Tortorella has ‘lost’ this team already, it’d be the fastest a coach has ever ‘lost’ a team before seeing as this team is completely different then the one he coached last season. The problem with the Rangers is that they’re just not that talented, they have a whole bunch of guys that just don’t do anything particularly well.

re: really?

Have to agree with polishBLUE — Rosival played a pretty solid game last night and, despite recent lackluster performance, he does have the huge shot from the point that could jumpstart our powerplay. Most teams are focusing their defensive efforts on our pointment during the powerplay, since we don’t have anyone (other than perhaps Avery) who can dominate down low (calling Vincent Lecavalier!).

I think its still too soon to call for Tortorella’s head — we don’t want Laviolette syndrome (from the broadcast booth to the bench) — that would mean what, a return to Keenan? Unless Messier is ready to come down from the suites to the bench, we should stick with Torts (and I don’t think a rookie coach -even if its the Messiah! ;) – is the solution for all the rookies and youngsters on this squad.

I think Torts’ message is slowly sinking in — for example, Kotalik delivered more big hits last night than he has all season combined. My guess is that Torts’ hands are tied by Sather when it comes to benching Drury and other high-paid talent. I agree though that Anisimov shouldn’t be benched — he’s not having as much success as we’d hoped but I think his effort is there. I’d like to see him with Gaborik and Prospal on a line for more than just a couple of shifts — try it for 3-4 games and see if any chemistry develops — would give a big body that can handle the puck to create room for Gaborik on the cycle.

by PotvinSucks on Dec 10, 2009 8:03 AM EST up reply actions

great points

you hit the nail on the head with the Sather tieing torts hands. Clearly, there is so much the coachs can teach and mentor and insipre to the players. The players have to execute, however there are many average players with big contracts that are not executing. If we had a pushy owner who likes to win and see how many tockets were sold then maybe this would not be the same product on the ice. Rozy and Drury have 2 more years on their contract, just maybe a team will be interested in one of the them for a playoff push. The players that have to removed off the roster in my opinion are the following:
Rozy, Drury, Voros, Brashear,
Players need to brought in that can accomodate the skills of Gabby and prospal on the first line and a player or two with toughness like a Chris Neil of the senators. I cannot even get through a whole game and will not attend a game until Sather is no longer the GM.

Rozsival did not play a great game

okay maybe since I can still recall him turning the puck over at least 5 times in the netural zone.

agree

the very opening seconds of the game rozi lost the puck at the hawks blueline, and I thought that it set the tone for his game the rest of the night. He lost the puck, and the hawks were in a frenzy in our end.rozi’s mistakes and super soft play result in a series of offense from the other team.i’m not just on the anti rozi band wagon, but he’s soft and makes bad desicions (sp?). the fact that hes on the ice as a important player is wrong, cut his minutes, bench him, send him down, something.i thought the 4th line played hard,i really like avs on the 1st line, maybe he hasnt had alot of luck lately but, patience is key.and after saying that,we played the hawks, who are just on fire.

lack of leadership?

The only problem that I found with your rant on the rangers is that you suggested that chris drury should have been punished when he took that horrendous penalty in the 3rd. The problem with the rangers is they are a group of veterans. Torts will never punish a veteran because, despite the idea that he has already lost his team and he hasnt, he will lose them if he starts to go after older players. You can light a fire under a younger player but not a veteran because they will resent it. I feel that the rangers really need a better show of leadership by these older players. If it means losing more games (and I dont think thats a problem for this team) by sticking up for each other more and showing how a real TEAM should act, instead of a group of individuals, then be it.

Yeah well when Tortorella actually won the cup

he didn’t give a shit who he benched, even if it was Lecavalier. Rozsival is playing like shit so is Drury and if they get all prissy with being scratched a game or two then they shouldn’t be playing

Anyway..

Here’s how I described the finale of tonight’s Rangers loss to my friend who is a die hard Flyers fan;
“Prospal couldn’t bury what was essentially an empty netter…it skipped off a Blackhawk…to Dustin Byfuglin…who out “hustled” (whatever the fuck that is) every Ranger on his way to a break away… and then Lundqvist shot himself before Byufglin even passed the rangers blue line."

Which one of you guys are going to blame Lundqvist for not saving the shot in overtime? I'm waiting...

Read my rant in the article about Lundqvist please.

Now for the game, again, Torts’ system isn’t working. Torts continues to make questionable decisions behind the bench. Torts continues to bench players who don’t deserve to be benched. The players in front of Lundqvist again decide they can gave less of a sh*t about him during the game.

Lundqvist deserved the shutout. The Rangers deserved to lose the game. Lundqvist deserved to win. The Rangers deserved to lose.

And about DRURY. He has the intangibles. Again, Drury played a great game. you can not look into his stats and think he sucks. There is no one more deserving on the team to where the “C”. No one deserves the captaincy besides him. No, I didn’t laugh when Joe said Drury scores clutch goals. He does. You can’t say he doesn’t because of his stats this year. He’s like Higgins in my opinion. He deserves to score, and he can. Higgins can score, we all knew that, so is anyone surprised he has been scoring lately?

I thought Callahan played a terrific game as well. His play, diving to block a Keith shot on the penalty kill, only to realize Keith isn’t shooting, and with one hand on his stick, he caresses the puck and takes possession. True effort right there.

There is alot wrong with this team. Everyone is pointing fingers at everyone. Those in which the fingers are pointing at, more often than not, are being punished for no reason.

I feel so bad for Lundqvist. He deserved that shutout. You have to feel bad for the guy. You have to feel bad for the guy. You have to feel bad for the guy.

Next worst forward, Prospal -6.

i cant recall one clutch goal drury has had for the rangers

personally id rather give cally the “C” over drury. Cally’s play at the end where he singlehandedly stripped a guy of the puck, while attempting to block a shot, rushing down the ice, absorbing a hit, and nearly setting boyle up for a goal (had boyle not stopped skating) was just a testament to his heart, even if his scoring has been lacking. Drury has not done anything to rally the troops or lead by example on the ice. and its not because of his stats this year. or even his overall stats with the rangers. Ive gone entire shifts without noticing he was even on the ice.

Torts' system

If you look at the top teams in the league every year, and most Stanley Cup winners, there aren’t too many run-and-gun winners. Pittsburgh didn’t get over the top until they learned they still had to play tough D first, even with all their firepower. Capitals are still learning that lesson but they’re moving in the right direction. At the other end of the spectrum, look at the Devils or the Red Wings (well, maybe not this year but the last 10 years for the Wings) - the Devils would be perfectly comfortable playing 2 periods with a 1 goal lead. They basically built their team around having an elite goaltender - Martin Brodeur. Lundquist is certainly in the same league as Brodeur and if you build a system around that, goals will come or you go to the shootout every night where he will win most of those battles. We have decent team speed but not superior team speed — so an aggressive forecheck is doomed to fail — look how many times Campbell beat guys off the forecheck last night. I don’t think Redden and Rosival are the building blocks for that type of system though. Staal, Garardi definitely are; MDZ & Gilroy — probably can be but still young — need to get stronger physically — Hossa and Buttugly (Byfuglen) dominated them last night.

i have a big problem with torts...

one of the first things i remember hearing him say when he was first hired, and then again in the preseason and summer months was how MSG and the rangers organization were soft and something to the effect of a country club like atmosphere…well, in recent weeks, torts has become the main cabana boy himself…he lack creativity, passion, fire, and at times basic common sense (as pointed out above: dru and rozi out on the powerplay? ARE YOU SERIOUS?) either they are trying to be put on display for possible shopping or torts has completely become renney 2.0: years experience+salary=minutes. torts makes me sick, and i feel awful for lundqvist especially after tonight. he played his heart out to be let down again. i would say the same for cally but that anytime i think of him i see his nice fat ($$$) extension and then his points total for the year…teams going nowhere fast. and torts is very much to blame at this point.

by LIrangersfan on Dec 10, 2009 5:02 PM EST up reply actions

This team really misses Dubinsky. Gaborik needs Dubinsky at center they will devolop the same chemistry Dubinsky had with Jagr. When Duby comes back Torts needs to let him play with Gaborik and not keep changing lines. Then that will push Avery down to the 2nd or 3rd line creating much better depth.

I agree they need to stop having Drury on the powerplay. Same with Callahan. Maybe they should give Anisimov more power play time. And maybe Christensen too. I keep hearing on the broadcast how Christensen has a great wrist shot.

I like Boyle on the wing he is such a big guy the rangers need to put him right in front of the net and have him screen the goalie and try to get some deflections.

And the team still plays a little too soft. That first goal the hawks scored was frustrating to watch. No one took the body of boxed out the black hawk players. Rangers were just standing watching the puck poor Hank.

by XLJ7789 on Dec 10, 2009 12:42 AM EST reply actions

Finally someone mentions it!!!

The first goal was like what the hell…first thing you are taught when covering your own end is take the guy out during a goal mouth scrum, to see Boyle hacking away at the puck along with 2 Hawks and another Ranger was mind boggling. Take the guys out and let Hank take the puck but nooooo, their allowed to hack away until it ended up in the back of the net, its almost like I could read Hanks mind as lay on the ice afterward, “can these guys do the fundamentals?” Hank and Cally had great games, Gabs was smothered the whole night, and the rest of the team for th emost part was just outclassed, outworked and never able to really counter except for the Higgins goal which was a beauty. We have enough problems as it is, yet when we get small facets of the game right, our guys still manage to screww it up. I didn’t count but I saw at least 2-3 times where Drury won the faceoff in our own end and we STILL didn’t gain control and allowed scoring chances. That just can’t happen, again basics of the game. I feel bad for Hank, he was awesome tonight and he show’s he one of the ones who cares…….as all of us on this board do

have to disagree

I thought we played a better game against a better team. Remember we were winning most of the game? The bad luck blues took some unfortunate penilties and that really lead to the loss. AA should never have been benched. I didn’’t even know that happened. That just leaves another bad taste in my mouth. I would think the players would start to dislike Torts for this “kiddy crap treatment” if he keeps sending them to time-out. Fire is about motivating your team to be winners with passion and a hunger for greatness, not about how you administer punishment. I thought Hank was in his all-star form, for the 1st time this season. And Cally did step up his game, he made some nice plays from what I saw.

Oh well, best case scenerio, if we lose we continue to lose BIG we get a great draft pick and potential change of leadership, if we win just enough we get a slight extension of the season. Either way, I’ll take bad hockey over no hockey any day of the week. :)

Girardi Penalty

While I agree that Drury was beyond brutal, Girardi’s penalty at the 5 minute mark was awful. You’d never see a Devil put a stick btwn someone’s legs and pull it. PLEASE.

Did Joe M. read the blogs when he got killed for making a similar comment about Drury in Minnesota. He’s such a “clutch” player. Spare me.

Let’s not throw the baby out with the bath water. Good effort against a solid team on the road. Would like to see another line gel. Disagree wholeheartedly with Sather criticisms as he as stuck with some younger players this year who make mistakes-gilroy’s bad d on the winning goal.

by db19 on Dec 10, 2009 9:17 AM EST reply actions

I'm really wondering what game some of you were watching......
….Chris Drury bear-hugging a Hawk in the neutral zone to start the third period penalty parade.

The only penalty Drury took was the conicidental minor at 18:08 of the first – which was a lame call after he was interfered with.

(Marion Gaborik) ..got back before Matt Gilroy did on the game winning goal, it says something about his character.

Bull. When the turnover occurred, he paused, expecting Gilroy to make the play. When Bfyuglien blew past Gilroy – he tried to get back – but did not make it. Gaborik is good, really really good – but let’s not put him up on a pedestal, please.
I don’t specifically recall how long Gilroy had been on the ice already during that shift – but the mere fact that someone could beat him down the ice makes me suspect that he needed a change.

Oh – and these are exactly the types of rookie mistakes/oversights that are going to happen.
I also find it interesting that Gilroy gets a pass – but Rozsival – who played his best game of the season by several orders of magnitude – gets railed.

And this “Torts is losing this team” stuff is getting really tired and old, quite fast. Unless you’ve got a source in the locker room to substantiate it – you might consider toning that down. They played excellent defensive hockey – aided and abetted by the best game Hank has played probably all season – against one of the most talented teams in the league – and they took the game to overtime. But “the sky is falling”……. :rolls eyes:

I’m not about to suggest that this team is Stanley Cup material – last night proved they’re at least a couple steps away. As I’ve said all along – they need more toughness on the blue line and the ability to clear the crease (hmmmm….sound like the game-tying goal for Chicago??) and at least one more proven scorer. But giving up on this team at this point – as frustrating as last nights loss was for ALL of us – in my view is patently ridiculous.

But have at it folks – “do something – anything” – so we can all rip into how stupid “something” was when it backfires……

by dbmaven on Dec 10, 2009 9:52 AM EST reply actions

I think you're right on the Drury penalty although I could have sworn he took one in the third.

As for the “excellent defensive hockey” comment. Not even close. Look at the bottom of this link (its the NHL game recap) at the bottom of the page they dop a shot chart. Nearly 50% of the shots are taken from the slot or directly around the net. That is not good defense. The score should have been 6-1 at least.

As for my “do something” comment it was more along the lines of a crease clearing defenseman like you asked for.

And I don’t think you can argue that some players aren’t tuning Tortorella out. They are not playing Tortorella hockey

As for your Gaborik comment. He was back before Gilroy was and if you look at the replay he paused to see where the trailer was so that he can pick him up on the rush. Once he sees Gilroy lose his Byfuglien he abandons his Hawk (who flies in right after Byfuglien makes his first move) to try and make the play.

Compared to the way they were (not) playing defensively two weeks ago, this was “excellent” for them.

There’s no point arguing “tuning out”. You see it one way, I see it differently. So be it.

db, I definitely agree with you on the Torts losing the team stuff, its just not happening.

Guys, if you really want to look at coaches who have lost their teams, go look at the 2003 NY Giants, the 1997-98 Rangers, the Mets (pick any one of about 20 seasons)

Last night they did not play a great game, but they were in it until the end. They just aren’t scoring. That doesn’t mean the coach has lost the team, it just means they aren’t scoring.

I just don’t see how you give up on a coach after 50 games, when he still doesn’t have the right mix of players.

Name me a coach who is going to be better, honestly. Any coach that comes in still has liabilities on defense, and still has forwards that aren’t scoring.

I don’t agree with everything he’s done either. But you can’t fire him in December, and tear it all down again and start over.

If the Rangers mail it in in March and April, then I can understand the Dump Torts talk. But I think the guy deserves more than 50 games to prove he can turn it around, no?

Don’t forget Tiki’s last year, the 06 Giants team hated Coughlin (at least Tiki and Shockey did), constantly blew leads and bickered one of the my least favorite teams I’ve ever followed.

Jimbo..

I will have to disagree… THIS FU***** coach sucks, this team sucks, the season is over !!!!!!
this style or brand of hockey is NOT WORKING AND IT’S THE COACH’S JOB TO SEE THAT. WE HAVE LOST14 OUT OF 21 GAMES….Guys this teams strength is who GABBY and Hank you must find a system that helps this team win and play to YOUR strength not to your opponents…Man up Torts and change the style…..Hate to say it but he wont and this team will continue to lose very valuable points night in and night out….Play the FuC**** trap because your defense is weak clog the N-zone and work off transition…Yep play that old boring hockey that at least keeps you in the game..bcause your style isn’t working, thats why renney was a better coach because he was smart enough to see the STRENGTH of the team.. LUNDQUIST….the old hockey term Read and React that goes for the coach as well…see the writing on the wall you must adapt to the players not the other way around it’s just common sense in business…if you have $10 on you, your smart enough (I hope) to not spend $20 at checkout. be smart enough to identify the team you have and understand the weakness and strengths…

by Pauly D on Dec 10, 2009 11:21 AM EST up reply actions

We can't play the trap well either

the problem is global. This team has tons of problems and I don’t see how the trap would help. Lose games 1-0? No thank you, at least let the kids groom with an offensive system so when we actually do have a good team on our hands they wont be out of sync.

Sorry but while I loved Renney his system drove me up the wall

What you're failing to recognize.....

….is that he already HAS changed the style.

2 weeks ago they would have lost that game by 3 or more goals.
Since the Buffalo game, they’re clearly focusing more on defense, which is why they’ve even been IN the games.

They don’t have the personnel to play the trap – and you’re not going to change to a trap style mid-season anyway – unless you’re “mailing it in” now and changing coaches.

And that would be idiotic beyond belief.

The best commentary I’ve read – which supports what I’ve been saying for weeks now, comes from Carp:

6) The tying goal was a disgrace, two Blackhawks down low on the power play against three Rangers (Boyle, Redden, Gilroy), all of them fishing for the puck with their sticks, none of them putting a body on a red-jersey. Could the situation have been more desperate? Yet three of them were playing shinny.

we need a Komisarek-Orpik-Pronger-Pilon (lol) type of player that punishes the opposition in front of the net and in the corners. Its hard to believe MDZ is our most physical dman

by MattPwrcf1 on Dec 10, 2009 11:38 AM EST up reply actions

my point !

we dont have players like this! so now what? we know the problem,we cant make a trade,so the only option is to adapt….

by Pauly D on Dec 10, 2009 11:58 AM EST up reply actions

you might be right…but physical dmen were avialable inthe off season…where was glen? smoking a cigar?

But Pauly, if the GM hires a coach, with the expectation of that coach installing the system that he coaches, isn’t it the GM’s job to get the players in here that can play the system? Lots of questions, but few answers.

I just think 50 games is too soon to judge a coach, unless its Bryan Trottier. This team is undergoing a change in philosphy that goes from one end of the spectrum to the other, and while they have played a more defensive style the last few weeks, ultimately its not what Torts wants to be as a hockey team.

Pauly, if I have $10 on me, and spend $20 at the checkout, I write a check! :)

you all have missed the point!

Guys, you all have missed the point! This team has many problems we all see that,CAP,lack of 2ndry scoring etc…You cant turn your $10 into $20 you have to be smart enough to know you can only spend $10 at the checkout….play a style that fits the team you have…we are not fast enough, tuff enough, and lack scoring at this point so you have to play a style that gives you a chance to win..Its really not that hard to follow…
DB, great point on the D.more of the fact tort’s is not doing his job that element in it self is one that can easily be taught and should have been taught in camp take the fuc**** man out it doesnt take skill to put someone on their ass……

Look Pauly

I will be the first to tell you that players are tuning out Torts but I agree with Jim that he is the man for the job right now. You cant axe every coach after a rough stretch of games, the Rangers were obviously never as good as we thought they were

You keep saying how the team sucks at everything and is built horribly and they don’t have the personnel to play pretty much any system and then you blame Tortorella, I’m sorry but that makes no sense. The team doesn’t lose games because it’s not preventing goals, it loses because it’s not talented enough to beat teams that know how to stop teams from scoring.

Not only that, but hopefully (hands to God here) it will just help in the fact that the lines can settle down, and there won’t be so much mixing and matching with guys who aren’t centers playing the position

That’s true. I also think that even though Dubi was not scoring much before he got hurt, he was still important to the team because he is decent on face offs, plays a pretty physical game and does the “little” things. But I hope he can start putting up some points, too.

by MattPwrcf1 on Dec 10, 2009 10:30 AM EST up reply actions

Can I get an "AMEN!" please....

I’d just add Drury, Avery, Callahan, Kotalik to that mix of “hope they can put up some points”…

by dbmaven on Dec 10, 2009 10:32 AM EST up reply actions

Wish it were so – but until consistent scoring occurs, the lines will continue to be shuffled.

The good news – the “4th line” last night looked pretty good – and because they were effective forechecking they got more than the usual amount of ice time.

After all these years of failure what makes a ranger fan think good old Glen will pull the trigger on anything to help this . Best he retire and let Mark M take over and begin fromless than scratch
