JOHN TORTORELLA SUSPENDED

NEW YORK -- The National Hockey League announced Saturday that New York Rangers coach John Tortorella has been suspended for one game for squirting a fan with water and throwing a water bottle that struck a fan during Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal Series with the Washington Capitals on April 24 in Washington.

Tortorella will miss the Rangers' game Sunday afternoon against Washington at Madison Square Garden.

Here is the whole story from NHL.com

Asst. Coach Jim Schoenfeld will coach the team tomorrow

Props to The Schwab for getting the scoop, and enabling us to bring this to you before anyone else.

I can’t decide if this will help or hurt them.

Mostly Hurts...

But like I just told a buddy, Torts always says its about the players because they get the job done when it comes to it. So maybe they can pull together without him.

They didn’t really play better for Renney when his job was on the line so I don’t know if that will be any motivation.

Although I don’t know if Torts is better liked.

the one thing I am not sure of is if Tortorella can appeal and be behind the bench. Either way, they have an experienced asst coach in Schoenfeld, I think they will be fine

And welcome to Blueshirt Banter, I hope you will join more discussions in the future.

He benches Avery because has actions were considered detrimental. Now he is the one hurting the team by taking himself out behind the bench. A 3-2 series lead has never felt so shaky.

Pretty Sucky

I don’t really understand a man who “punishes” players for not playing hard enough in his own estimation and benching others for not living up to the highest ethical standards (even if their role is to instigate and irritate) yet doesn’t have the self control to ignore a heckler. The NHL found that our fine coach squirted the fan before getting doused with beer. Guess what: find me one heckler that wouldn’t dump their beer on a coach in that situation (notwithstanding that its a waste of a precious good). It looks like Torts is more of a control freak than anything else. Boo.

Avery should play, and be on a line with Gomez and Antropov. Callahan, Dubi and Naslund, followed by Zherdev, Korpi, and Sjostrom. Betts, Orr, Voros to round it out, but not to anchor the f-in powerplay. Drury has a clipped wing and needs to heal, give him a chance, so he can be of use in May, if we get there. He’s not helping anyone on the boards, draws, passing, shooting, etc . . . His goal had an element of trickery, but after listening to his analysis was nothing more than luck.

Clearly Torts was trying to send a message to “his” team by playing a guy he benched for 18 games on the PP (Voros). Clearly he tried to send a message by benching Avery. Clearly he failed his own standards by dumping a water bottle on a fan. Perhaps an apology would have served him better than denial and avoidance. In any event, this hypocrisy leaves me believing that he’s not the right guy to coach my team.

while I think we can all agree it was an ugly situation, and the consequences suck, all we can hope for is that the Rangers get thru it today, and come away with a win.

Circle the wagons time.

They should be okay

So long as Scho dosen’t try to yell at the refs again. “Go eat another dougnut!”
