Is Martin St. Louis a Good Option?

John Tortorella discovered he had no go-to guys he believed he could go to, take it to the bank that the coach's first postseason order of business will be to work with GM Glen Sather to find the way to get Martin St. Louis out of Tampa Bay.

The St. Louis rumors came up at the trade deadline this year, but nothing came of them. Even though I'm a huge fan of St. Louis, I don't think it would be a good move for the Rangers. Now Uncle Larry has put 2 and 2 together and correctly he has come up with 4. Tortorella and St. Louis have a past history and have a mutual admiration for one another. They also have been very successful together in the past, winning a Stanley Cup in 2004 (that's the first "2").

It's been apparent all season long that the Rangers needed a proven scorer. This year's playoffs made it even more glaringly obvious that even the hockey idiots on ESPN have mentioned the Rangers don't have scoring. So the Rangers need a scorer (thats the other "2").

So it's logical that the Rangers could be interested in Martin St. Louis (thats the correct answer of 4).  However, I'm not so sure it's going to be the best move for the Rangers. The Lightning are going to want a kings ransom for St. Louis, who has two more years left on his contract with a cap hit of $5.250 million a year. They more than likely will initially ask for Marc Staal, which is a definite no. Then the next step would be to inquire about Ryan Callahan, Brandon Dubinsky, Dan Girardi, and then the very desireable Rangers prospects that include Artem Anisimov, Evgeny Grachev, Bobby Sanguinetti, and Michael Del Zotto. I'm not so sure I'd be willing to sell the future for a 34 year old Martin St. Louis.

Maybe the Rangers could sign and trade Nikolai Zherdev? Even though he's extremely frusterating because he's yet to maximize his talent, he could find some chemistry alongside Vincent Lecavalier and would help to replace the scoring they would lose from St. Louis. The Rangers could sweeten the deal with a draft pick or two. But considering the Rangers received him for Fedor Tyutin and his stock hasn't gone up this season, this scenario is more than likely just a TMR dream.

In addition to the Rangers lack of desire to trade their young players (at least I hope so), there are also salary cap complications to this trade. The Rangers would have to unload one either somewhere else or back to Tampa Bay. Michael Rozsival seems like an option since they could use a veteran blue liner.

Whether it involves St. Louis or another player, Glen Sather is going to have to work some magic this season. I hope he's gone though before it even gets to the point where he's making any real decisions.

go with youth

last seasons off season started well with getting nik zherdev. i didnt like giving up fedor but thats life. you gotta give something to get something.
but zherdev dissapeared after the first few weeks. so bust.
redden, rozsival = headache. BUST.
Naslund… come on, BUST.

what was sather thinking ?? apparently its impossible to resurrect a career in new york. what makes you think naslund and redden were going to? rozi i didnt mind signing him… just signing Both redden and rozi for those ridiculous amounts when mark streit got like 4.5 and is sick offensively.

i almost could guarantee that if the rangers had streit this season, they would have scored a ton more goals.
its simple really. the guy is a nasty powerplay qb, has a bomb for a shot, and makes tricky passes.
yes he is inept a bit defensively… but hes better than redden!

its a thorn in my side when i see that guy on the islanders, and i have to watch wade redden bumble around on the rangers.

sather has to go.
the rangers should just go with a complete over haul. Go with youth. the penguins and caps have shown you need to suck for a few years to be good. look out for the islanders if they get their heads out their own asses. if they dont screw up this draft somehow theyll be good in like 2 years.

Forget St. Louis

Great player, but hes 34 years old. If you are going to give away that kind of talent give it for someone younger.

Oh by the way Staal and Grachev are 100% untouchable!

As a Bolts fan

Hi from Raw Charge, everybody…

Looking at the deal simply as being from New York originally, having seen the Rangers and what they do and knowing the Lightning the way I do — this would be a mistake.

Whatever price the Rangers have to give up to pay for Marty’s services would end up vaulting his expectations to levels that are comparable to some fo the new signings in the Bronx who shall remain nameless. Between that and the media pressure cooker, could St. Louis ever live up to expectations in the Big Apple?

And how can the Rangers afford to overpay for St. Louis – which should be the only way that gets him away from TB (sidenote: with Brian Lawton’s track record as GM in Tampa, it may take less)? As was said above, Staal should be untouchable among other top flight talent for the Rangers.

There’s a possible reward with obtaining St. Louis in victories and scoring touch (that and his leadership skills), but again — how can he ever live up to the expectations that he would have if dealt from TB (where not only did he win the cup but the Hart trophy as well) to the Rangers? I’m not saying he can’t, but with the price that has to be paid in order to get him — I’m saying it’s not likely that he’ll reach the vaulted expectations that come with being a big-ticket acquisition.

Welcome to the Banter Charge ...

I agree it wouldnt make any sense. If the Rangers are going to give up that type of money then they need to give it up for a younger scoring talent … ohhh I dont know … Kovalchuck?

Ilya was Ovechkin before there was Ovechkin

He’s stuck in that limbo that is known as Atlanta, where the ownership upheaval keeps the team from going anywhere and keeps Don Waddel employed. I don’t know if Kovi and Torts would work well together though — he’d have to be past his days of floating or John would ride his ass all the way out of town. That actually endears me to Tortorella — he had that struggle with Lecavalier and Vinny was almost traded to solve the issues. Almost. Rick Dudley left the Lightning after that, and Torts and Lecavalier (and Marty, lets not forget this thread is about Marty ;) ) went on to win the Cup two seasons later.

But Ilya would be a much more sound investment – long term – than Marty. Marty will give everything he has, but that’ll never be enough to compensate for the cost of acquisition.

Yea

Kovalchuck is the only player Id want this offseason if the Rangers are gonna make moves.

I would hate to do it, but Callahan and Korpikowski would at least be a start there, but Kovalchuck is needed and would be great in NY.

as I said in one of the threads yesterday, unfortunately, this is a trade the Rangers love to make:

Marcel Dionne, Bernie Nichols, Luc Robitaille, Eric Lindros, Pavel Bure

If he is a “Torts guy” though, that could go a long way in any deal getting done. I think Torts is dying to remake this team.

It should be made into his team too. This current roster doesnt fit his style at all. But they can’t sacrifice the future.

Pass

He’s 34. His production will likely continue to decline. Plus, he has played with Lecavlier, Richards, and now Ryan Malone and Steve Stamkos. The Rangers don’t have anyone of that caliber to put him with, so in all likelihood, his rate of production would just decline even faster.

by Reg Dunlop on May 1, 2009 10:44 AM EDT reply actions

his numbers havent really declined.

06-07 102 pts
07-08 83 pts
08-09 80 pts (on a really bad team)

even then though, for the price and at this point in his career.

If Sather trades some of our good young players I’m gonna flip. He is 34 and Sather has a knack for acquiring players on the cusp of a colossal decline. Just the notion of this trade makes me nauseous. Hopefully Sather’s previous failures will leave the Rangers with insufficient cap room for St. Louis; that can be the silver lining for the whole “Wade Redden debacle.”

Staal and Grachev

Should be untouchable. But are you willing to give away Dubinsky or Callahan for him? I dont think so.

ur forgetting iilya kovuchuck is a restricted free agent this year so he would nrrd to opt out of his current contract and were also forgetting marian gaborik the guys is a pure scorer he played 15 games and still managed to score 11 goals with that time i say kavolchuck go for him and marian gaborik is our back up plan

by wazzy23 on May 1, 2009 12:50 PM EDT reply actions

Kovalchuk still has one year left on his contract with ATL. If he’s not re-signed Waddel will probably move him at the deadline.

The market for Marian Gaborik is going to be interesting. He’s a pure scorer but is plagued with injuries. I don’t see him as a real option for the Rangers.

kovulchuck and gaborik

kovalchuck has 1 year left but its a opt out year for him smarty so he can leave right now if he wants to and marian is also free agent so both are great but i would pick kovulchuck make a trade or wait until he opts out in the summeer and make a deal thats that no debating that

To return to Edmonton

…would be to disappear. I mean, really, who goes to Edmonton? ;)
