Trade Specs: Scott Gomez For Dustin Penner
One of the Rangers priorities this season is going to be to first decide whether or not the Rangers think Gomez is still their man and then if he isn't go about trying to move him. After a miserable campaign this past year, it's up in the air whether or not John Tortorella and Rangers management believe that Gomez is still a first line center capable of playing a solid 22-24 minutes per game. The Rangers are in a precarious situation with not only Scott Gomez, but the other horrid contracts (Redden, Rozsival, Drury) their balance sheet possesses. The problem is, the Rangers don't hold all the cards. Even if they decide unanimously that Gomez needs to be moved, whose a possible trading partner and for what in return? The only feasible scenario is that the Rangers move Gomez and receive another teams version of him. Case in point, winger Dustin Penner of the Edmonton Oilers. Larry Brooks wrote an article with this proposal and it is indicative of the kind of trade Ranger fans might see if Gomez gets moved.
Penner was signed by Krazy Kevin Lowe to a Group II offer sheet following the Ducks Stanley Cup win a few years ago. Since then, he has regressed and hasn't lived up to the potential he showed playing on the 'kid line' alongside Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry while he was in Anaheim. Most NHL GM's have their version of a public embarrassment, Glen Sather has Wade Redden and Kevin Lowe has to a smaller extent, Dustin Penner.
Penner fills the Rangers need of a big winger. He's 6'4 and 245 pounds of up until this point, largely uncapped potential. Ever since he landed in Edmonton with the big contract in his back pocket, he seemed to have lost the fire to prove himself worthy that most young players have.
Despite Penner's flaws, he's younger than Gomez and his contract is much smaller. His cap hit is $4.25 million per year until 2012 while Gomez's hit is $7,357,143 million until 2014. On this deal, the Rangers would gain $3,107,413 million in cap space but more importantly, they would save themselves from paying a premium for a now elderly 35 year old Gomez in the final year of his contract. If you think his deal looks bad now imagine how bad it looks when Gomez is Markus Naslund's age. To me, that is the biggest positive of this deal. The Rangers gain the cap space, but they also save themselves from the risk of paying a broken down version of Gomez 5 years from now. On the flip side, Dustin Penner is 26 and contemporary thinking would say the he will improve over the course of his contract while Gomez will regress (as we've already seen).
So hypothetically, the Rangers subtract Gomez and add Dustin Penner and lose a putrid big contract by adding a smaller GM's blunder. The problem that will arise (as will any trade of Gomez) is who will replace him as first line center? There aren't any really good free agent centers this summer. Seriously, do you really want to drop another big contract on Mike Cammalleri? I didn't think so.
As will with any possible trade of Gomez, the Rangers will more than likely become a weaker team since they won't receive much value in return. In this particular case, the Rangers gain some size on the wing and some cap space. But then they also lose their number 1 center and the Rangers are left hoping that Brandon Dubinsky is ready to step up and play 1st or 2nd line minutes. The possibilities for fixing Glen Sather's mistake(s) is severely limited, which makes me think 'do I really want Sather to have the opportunity to make another gaff trying to erase his mistakes?'

mmm...not sure how i feel about this.
this is like a double-edged sword. but still…no. i think gomer should stay. so far i’m not a fan of anything larry brooks has suggested since we got eliminated.
St. Louis – Pass
Penner – Pass
i’m now starting to realize how deep in feces we are with the whole cap situation.

very, very deep. i personally think they end of keeping gomez. they should focus their attention to moving rozsival and waiving redden. theyre a better team with gomez than w/o at this point

I agree
I don’t want Penner.
He’s big, He’s young, but he’s slow. He also will not be playing with 2 other big guys, who are actually fast and skilled in Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf.
From what that article says, Penner is the Wade Redden of Edmonton. Why would the Rangers trade for the forward version of Redden????

to a much much lesser extent. he obviously is not nearly in the same category as redden. the point is, it was a bad move by lowe signing him to the offer sheet. it was embarrassing for him, other GM’s frowned on him for doing so and in the end it bit him in the ass.
the point is, the rangers more than likely will not get much for gomez in return.

i would disagree
a team desperate enough for someone to deef their goal scorers cough Columbus cough might be willing to part with some talent. On the other hand i want to give him another year.

definitely.
unless its a gomer for marc savard (don’t take this seriously), we can’t afford to lose one of the best puck carriers and passers in the NHL.
the only problem is, as we discussed before – who the hell is gonna take redden’s contract?!
don’t we still take a substantial cap hit if we waive him?

Nobody is going to take Wade Redden. From what I understand, there are probably three options:
1. Bury him in the AHL. The good news is, he is off the cap. The bad news is, the Rangers aren’t going to pay a guy $6M to play in Hartford.
2. Buy out the contract. I could be wrong on this, but if I understand it correctly, the Rangers can buy out the contract at 2/3 of its value, and it would count against the cap. If I have this right, that would mean a $4M hit on the cap every year for the duration of the deal.
3. Redden takes the Naslund way out, and realizes its over, and retires to save the Rangers the cap hit. Would you walk away from 30 million dollars? Yeah me neither.
I still have hope for Gomez, but it wouldn’t break my heart if they moved him in the right deal either.

i have hope for gomez too, they need to pick up a proven scorer to play with him though.

I agree, the only thing that worries me is, he had Jagr last year, and they didn’t mesh.

eh, that really isn’t much of a concern for me. they have different mentalities and play a different style of play. they both want to carry the play with the puck on their stick and where as gomez is go-go jagr was more calculated in his moves.

fair point

I disagree about not paying redden 6.5 million to play int he AHL.
He is playing AHL style hockey now, let him walk.

THe only way to make Gomez better
is to pair him with a winger or 2.
He’s not a goal scorer, like most good centers he’s a distributer first and a scorer second (tho for Gomez, its a distant second.
The Rangers priority this offseason has to be a sniper who can light the lamp up at least 35 times a year.
Easier said that done of course, but they need to inquire about Kovalchuck.

I think that
you keep Gomez for at least another year. Gomez deserves another year to work, he is a brilliant passer, probably one of the best in the league. And lets be honest how could anyone have flourished in Tom Renney’s defensive system.
Dont forget that Torts only took over from the end of the year on (last 15 games i think) You cant judge Gomez from this year.
The Ranger Reporter - My Ranger Blog!
why?
so edmonton would make this gomez for penner deal straight up and further compound the idiocy of the penner signing? they’re going to add an extra 4+ mil per year for a longer period of time?
the gomez and drury signings for the money they got were mistakes that it seems people are only now waking up to….you don’t pay 2nd line guys superstar money (unless you’re a complete imbecile like sather)
nothing in either of their careers pointed to them producing goals/assists/etc based on the money they were getting, they were career 60-70 point guys
remember the money sather threw at holik? paying a checking center first line center money doesn’t change his skill set, just his tax bracket
the solutions: give redden the kasparitis treatment, try finding a willing partner for gomez (i’m betting los angeles isn’t on his no-trade list), and my preference would be to dump either drury and/or roszival, but that doesn’t seem likely….more likely is roszival is traded and redden stays…hurrah….
This from a man who thinks the plural of goose is sheep.
Creative Moves
Sather really needs to be at his creative best, and judging by his history of trades we are doomed. Except for some Ranger trades where we were desperate for the cup, what did he really get for Gretzky, Coffey, hell even the Mess deal gave the Oilers squat. He really needs to do something since the UFA market is slim without spending a boat load we dont have. Boy that 6 mil for Redden would look nice as someone like Gaborik. One intriguing name through is Afinogenov from Buffalo, speed and moves, but needs to play with someone who has similiar vision (Gomez?).
Right now we keep Drury and Gomez. In the high flying system that Torts wants to play their speed will be useful, much like it was in Buffalo. I agree that Redden and Rosy need to be moved, too much money for guys who are behind Girardi, Staal, even Mara in play. Intteresting off season ahead.
Penner's underrated right now
Based on his use this season. He’s a powerplay specialist who was booted unceremoniously off the first unit in favour of Erik Cole (until MacTavish finally realized that wasn’t working) and then used on the 3rd and 4th lines for much of the season despite being one of the team’s better even-strength scorers.
He isn’t worth his contract, but he took a big step forward from 2007-08 (although the superficial numbers don’t show it) and if I were Tambellini I certainly wouldn’t trade him and 3MM+ of cap room for Scott Gomez. Unless the Rangers were willing to take Steve Staios too, that is ;)
It's only my opinion, but it's right.
