Around SBN: This Should Encourage Juan Mata

Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke has confirmed to Sportsnet that the Lightning have asked for Toronto defensemen Tomas Kaberle and Luke Schenn along with the team's No. 7 pick in exchange for Tampa's No. 2 selection.

Hmmmm

I don’t know.

Kaberle is obviously a very good PP QB D-man, and can score at even strength too. Id love to have him.

Luke Schenn is very young, but was very good even as a rook straight to the pro’s.

But this season there are 2 potentially ELITE guys at the top of the draft. John Tarvares is at worst Steve Stamkos part 2 or possibly Crosby part 2 or anywhere in between Victor Hedmann is compared to Chris Pronger.

I know it would be smart to go with the given, proven NHLer. Schenn is young, but he proved that he at the very least will be playing for a long time and be a solid Top 4 D-Man at worst, but probably in the top 2 pairing.

I’d do this if I was the Lightening tho. You never know if Tarvares or Hedman will be as good as advertised, plus its not like the #7 overall is crap. They could potentially grab Luke Schenn’s brother Braydon…….

I can’t believe the Leafs would give up Schenn tho. Id think the Rangers giving up Staal would be nuts, and Schenn RIGHT NOW is as good as Staal.

Is Kaberle and Schenn plus the #7 worth

I read awhile ago that Toronto is willing to sell its soul to get the local phenom Tavares, but I don’t see how trading for the second overall pick will make that happen. You gotta figure the Islanders are going with Tavares. My guess is Toronto will not make this deal unless they are assured the Islanders are going with the other guy.

Toronto isnt making this deal period.

They refuse to get rid of Schenn. And regardless this is a horrific deal for the Leafs. Kaberle is 4 million a year for 2 (maybe 3?) more years! On the open market he could command 8 million a year easy.

Burke is a smart guy well see what he does.

There are lots of rumors that the Isles may want the defenseman (Hedman?), but that may just be posturing.

Victor Hedman, you are correct

Garth Snowe has not just outright said “We’re taking Tavares!” he’s drawing it out. Either it’s marketing genius in drawing out the uncertainty and adding intrigue to the selection or it’s more stupidity from the Isles — and we’ll see Snowe take Duchenes instead of either Hedman or Tavares.

If I were the Isles,

id take Hedman. If both these guys are as good as they say they are, then I think you go for the franshise defensman, especially when the team really doesn’t have one.

I know Tavares may be the closest thing to Crosby so he’ll likely be the choice, but to me the Isles have plenty of young scoring talent already. Their blueline is good, but if they got a big stopper like Hedman then they could be very good for long time.

But its the Islanders, so I hope they are dumb enough to trade the pick or draft neither of these guys.
