Reading Between the Blueline
After the news broke of the Rangers signing Michael Del Zotto, a favorite Ranger prospect of mine, a series of thoughts went through my head over the next couple of hours. My first reaction was I can't wait to see him try to make the team. Then it gradually became more pessimistic, per usual, backtracking to the thought of him playing well for the Wolf Pack and then just generally wondering if he will make an impact in the AHL.
But one thing that is for certain is that GM Glen Sather has set up quite a roster battle for the final few spots left on the Ranger blueline come next autumn no matter who is involved. Along with this, we know that Marc Staal, Dan Girardi, Michal Rozival, and Wade Redden will be back next season. Accordingly, the Rangers defensive depth chart looks like this as of today:
Staal - Girardi
Redden - Rozival
??? - ???
Now, the signing of Del Zotto got me thinking about all of this because Del Zotto will most likely end up in Hartford next season unless he plays at Marc Staal levels in training camp. Therefore, I see at least one spot open for a Rangers prospect. My top 3 candidates would be recently-signed Hobey Baker winner Matt Gilroy, 1st round pick Bobby Sanguinetti, and breakout 4th round pick Corey Potter. We also cannot forget about AHL journeyman Brian Fahey and 2nd round pick Michael Sauer down with the Wolf Pack either.
What could make this roster battle much more interesting is if Sather decides to go ahead and heavily pursue either the familiar Paul Mara, who we suggested the Rangers should keep, or pursue and most likely over-pay an aged and over-achieving free agent. As of today, I feel that Mara coming back is a complete coin flip, but I don't see who the Rangers could sign as a free agent to take up the fifth spot with their cap situation. At the same time, the Rangers wouldn't have given Matt Gilroy a one way contract if they didn't think he could be up to the task. The club is clearly stocked with young talent on the defensive side, and I think many around Sather are calling for a closer look at some of these kids.
But once again the Blueshirt faithful are in for an interesting roster battle come September because of the Rangers situation with free agents and young prospects. Derek Morris will most likely not be back, and even if Mara returns, thus taking up the fifth defensive spot, we will still witness a great battle for the final defensive spot on a packed blueline.
So what do you faithful think? Can Del Zotto possibly fly by all the aforementioned and steal the final spot? Will Matt Gilroy play up to his potential? Do you think Sather is going to let Mara walk and count on the Rangers youth? Was Paul Mara born with a beard? Let's hear it.

Del Z will either be on the NHL roster or back to OHL due to age and due to his contract Gilroy will be spending the whole season in the NHL or the whole season at AHL as he would be exposed to waivers to bring up mid-season. I reckon if those 2 don’t make it then its between Sauer, Potter, Heikkinen, Fahey or Sanguinetti to fill out the 5/6/7 spots if we don’t re-sign Mara.
As for Mara, he would be a good mentor and partner for whichever youngster makes the roster, i also heard that US Postal Service has given Mara’s beard its own zipcode…..
Hi UK, welcome to Blueshirt Banter
With all the young defensemen the Rangers have, I am fairly certain either Rosey or Redden won’t be there next year somehow someway. I think we will see at least 2 of the “Young Guns” in the lineup come October.
I heard that there is no chin under Mara’s beard, only another fist.

I really hope that depth chart in the near future
ends up looking like
Staal-Girardi
?-??
?-??
Lots of ???, but better than Redden and ROsival.
My thoughts on the defense situation.
On Del Zotto:
I don’t see Del Zotto making the Rangers this season, unless he completely kills it at training camp, which is certainly possible. Keep in mind that Sanguinetti, Potter, and even Sauer are ahead of him on the prospect depth chart. The Rangers seem to love giving the players in Hartford a shot before any recently signed junior.
On Rozsival, Redden:
While I hope Sather will move Rozsival or Redden, completely banking on it as a definite is pushing it. Both of these players are vastly overpaid (not as much with Rozsival) and will be difficult to trade; if Sather does find a deal, it will be with a club for another bad contract (ie. Dustin Penner).
On Gilroy:
The Gilroy factor adds another interesting dilemma; since he signed a one-way contract (and quite a lucrative one at that), the Rangers cannot just send him down to Hartford. It will be interesting to see how he adapts to making the jump straight from college to the NHL – it won’t be easy.
On Potter:
Seems to be the “safe” choice to make the team out of Camp. He’s an RFA, but will probably make around 550-600k which makes him quite attractive as the Rangers are almost sure to be right up against the cap again this year (unless a big contract or two is moved). Potter has a sound game and the Rangers seem comfortable with him stepping in and playing well early in the season.
On Sanguinetti:
Along with Potter, seems to be the logical choice/hopeful to make the team out of camp. His offseason workout regimen is going to dictate whether or not he makes the Rangers. He needs to come to 09 Camp in the best shape of his life. It is evident that he lacks a solid defensive game, but coming to camp in great shape, showing a willingness to learn, and his overall upside might give him the edge over everyone. I think Sanguinetti makes the team over Del Zotto if he works this offseason.
On Sauer:
Having the experience during a call-up last season should benefit Sauer, who I think can be a pretty solid 5th or 6th defenseman in this league. He’s big, strong, willing to take the body and clear the crease. Plus, he does possess some offensive ability that could develop a little more over time.
Bottom Line:
Staal
Girardi
Redden (highly unlikely to be traded; might be sent to HFD if he starts slow)
Rozsival or Mara (if Rozsival is moved, Mara probably returns at low salary)
Gilroy (lucrative, one-way deal all but secures his spot)
Open Slot (Potter, Sanguinetti, Del Zotto, Sauer, wild card)
Potter is probably the favorite at this point (meaning right this moment) to take the open spot. I think the Rangers would love Sanguinetti to make it, but he needs to work hard this summer. Del Zotto has a shot, but will need to outshine both Sanguinetti and Potter to make it AND play well with the Rangers to stick.
Sauer seems to be the odd man out here, but like Potter, could see some action. I haven’t seen Heikkenen play enough, other than youtube videos, to make a determination as to how he will adapt to the North American game. Fahey is a depth signing for Hartford, I hope he doesn’t even come close to making it (because that essentially means the above names all failed to impress Rangers brass).
I do think Rozsival is the likely candidate to be moved this offseason, because his contract is not as much of a cap killer as Redden’s (but a trade is far from being guaranteed). This will likely create enough room to bring Paul Mara back into the mix, as he does help the young defensemen (ex. Staal, Girardi) when they first arrive on the NHL scene. The only way Redden is dealt is for another bad contract.
Del Zotto cannot play in the AHL this year
hes too young … so expect him to tear it up in the OHL again as captain of the Knights.

we are loading our team with excellent defensive prospects. how many forward prospects do we have in comparison? anisimov, grachev and the new swiss kid? i don’t think it really matters who makes the 3rd pairing. it will be exciting to watch but i don’t think it will make a big difference in the blueshirts’ campaign next year. i haven’t seen del-zotto or sanguinetti play so all i have is stats and rumors, but i think its very unlikely that michael will make the team. bobby however had an impact on the pack this year so maybe he’ll fill in that spot.
my prediction, based on last year’s performance and assuming nothing crazy goes on with mara, rozi and redden:
staal-girardi
redden-rozi
mara-potter/gilroy

Equally expect Gilroy to makr the Rangers
hed signed a two year one way contract. There is no way he is going to be paid 1.75 million to play in Hartford.
Redden has to be send to the minors to get his salary off the cap.

That's the big curveball...
Gilroy is the big curveball here. I would like to think that the Rangers management know what their doing giving 3.5 Million out to an unproven player as he will most likely be guaranteed a spot going into camp. With that goes one spot, and I agree with brozer above that Potter is the safe bet to make the team right now.
Other than that, its a complete crapshoot.
you probably have the answer.
has any $5million+ player ever spent a year in the minors?

Redden
Does the NHL Salary cap work this way? IE, if the Rangers demote Redden, his salary:
1) Does not have to paid and does not count against the cap
2) Has to be paid, but does not count against the cap
3) Has to be paid and does count against the cap.
Just wondering how it works.

2) Has to be paid, but does not count against the cap.
at least i hope that’s what it is.

If the Rangers decide to send him down here is the process:
1) He has to go through waivers (but which team in their righ minds would pick him up)
2) If he passes waivers he plays in the AHL and the Rangers pay him but his ENTIRE 6.5 million dollar salary is removed fromt he cap
3) We all rejoice as Glen Sather ammends one of his big mistakes

This is the same thing the Penguins did with Satan.

Rangers did this with Darius Kasparitis
The salary will not count against the cap.
However, The Rangers signed Redden to a no-movement clause, so NYR would have to get his approval.
Lopez wants it away, and it's hit deep to left center, Andruw Jones on the run, this one has a chance... home run!!, Mike Piazza!, and the Mets lead 3 to 2!!

Redden only has a No-Trade Clause
According to http://www.nhlscap.com/no_trade.htm Redden only has a no trade clause. So the Rangers can send him to Hartford if they want to. Actually he can only list 8 teams he won’t be traded to and the other 21 teams are all fair game
No Brainer
This must be the plan. Unless Sather can’t recognize that one of his moves was a mistake.

I read somewhere that its a no-movement clause
Nevertheless, I would love to see Redden off Broadway.

Del Zotto and other options
Del Zotto could make the Rangers, but I would expect he will be returned to Junior.
How about just signing Jordan Leopold….and not for 5 million a season.
Then the Rangers could either swap Roszival or Redden for a winger, and play Sanguinetti, Gilroy or whichever prospects step up the most.

I was thinking about Leopold
(And i might do a scouting the free agents on him) but he will be that expensive. SOME team, probably the defense starved Lightning or Ducks will throw him massive money which we simply cant match.

The thing about Leopold
is I would really not have that big a problem if the Rangers had to sign him for around 5 million, but its just that Redden and Rosival’s contracts are such albatrosses that they just can’t do it, even if Leopold is much better than Redden and Rosival combined.

Rozsival used to be solid
before he got lined up with Redden
