New Look New York Rangers? (Update)
These New York Rangers aren't playing games anymore. Not with John Tortorella at the helm looking over his new empire. His troops need to be faster, they need to have heart, they need to have skill but most importantly they have to want it. This team isn't waiting either.
Cap space is an issue, and they have already started addressing it. Markus Naslund, or Mr. Class as I now refer to him, has decided to retire instead of allow the Rangers to buy him out. Saving the Rangers 2 million dollars against the cap for this year and 1 million dollars against the cap next year. Thank him if you see him on the streets because that is a ridiculously classy thing to do.
The next step is to see what happens to Wade Redden. He did have a pretty good playoffs, minus the Federov incident, but he is way too expensive. He will most likely be bought out during the 15 day buyout period in June, unless they can find a taker. I really would take a 7th round pick for him; they just have to get rid of that contract.
Rozsival, Mara, Morris, Antropov and Naslund (assuming he isn't retiring) all may find themselves wearing a new uniform due to the Rangers cap needs. Here is their contract information:
- Rozsival: 5 million dollars a year for the next 3 years.
- Mara: 1.9 million dollars this year (UFA this June)
- Morris: 3.9 million dollars this year (UFA this June)
- Naslund: 4 million dollars a year (Signed on for 1 more year if he doesn't retire)
- Antropov: 2 million dollars this year (UFA this June)
All of them combined are 16.8 million dollars against the cap. That could leave some wiggle room to sign some of the many RFA's this off season, but it wouldn't be enough.
Update: I figured I would put this here instead of a comment: During the trade deadline Tortorella asked for specific types of players and one of them was someone who was "huge and can score." Antropov fit that mold so they went for him. I would be surprised if the Rangers didn't at least make a pretty serious go at him. Tortorella has liked him, and the Rangers do need a player like him.
The next big question is over Zherdev. The way things sound right now Nik Zherdev will be back in Ranger blue next season. In an interview with Beyond the Blueshirts Nik Zherdev made multiple comments that suggested that he would be back next year. You can see the entire-translated-interview here.
Now I know a lot of you Banter-ers are against bringing back Mr. Zherdev, especially after his lackluster playoffs. But I think that the Rangers should bring him back. He will be 24 once the season starts and while he was 23 last season he had the most points on the Rangers (He was tied with Gomez with 58 points).
Now I want to bring him back, that's right I want him back. He is way too young, and with too much talent, to let him walk away for nothing. Yes sometimes he takes shifts off, and yes sometimes it seems like his heart isn't in it. But who else but Tortorella to whip him into shape; perhaps similar to the way he did it with Vinny Lecavalier. Just give him a chance, 3 years or so, and make it cheap. He didn't have a great year so 2.5-3 million a year should be just fine. Especially if they could bring Antropov back for around the same price, maybe even a little more say 3-3.5. I mean say what you want, but if you let Zherdev walk who do we have that's a scorer? That's what I thought ...
Either way it shakes out it should be exciting. I do love the off season because I love to see how the Rangers re-tool for the next season. Well at least when they do a good job ... More later.

Let Z walk.
Keeping a player who couldn’t step up his game for his first-ever playoffs would be mistake. Yes, he is young. Yes, he is superbly skilled. But you can’t teach heart. You can’t force someone to care. Bringing in a new coach and getting into the postseason didn’t spark him, so what will? And he is sure to want a raise too, which is ridiculous.
There will be other options out there. Either move up in the draft and get a prospect ready to play or sign someone like Mikael Samuelsson, someone who knows how to win.
I have a blog too! www.scottyhockey.com
Let's Go Rangers!
I'd keep him
for the above reasons, but he is going to be seeking a raise most likely and I’d rather that space be used to go out and get a proven scorer or to re-sign callahan and dubinsky long term.

Heart
I love to see a good, grinding player, working hard all the time too. But this obsession people have with “heart” is getting absurd. Usually the guys who people think have “heart” are guys who are mediocre players. They have to work hard and grind all the time just to keep up. A lot of higher skilled players don’t have more “heart” than Zherdev, they are just more talented so they produce better results.
Zherdev is who he is. He is a talented player who focuses primarily on his offensive skill set. If you don’t think he can become a premier offensive player than you shouldn’t want to see him on the team. Same goes if you think he doesn’t fit into the system. But to not want a talented, and young player around because of a perceived lack of heart, doesn’t make sense to me.
Heart?
I saw alot of it in him for some if not most of the year. I really did. He dove to break up breakaways he dove to block shots in 5-1 hockey games. This is a guy that can be really special. Lets give Torts some time with him.

Zherdev
may have led the Rangers in points, but it still wasn’t much. Im pretty sure Torts had ample time to try and force him to do something, but Zherdev didn’t do much.
Antropov played with a lot of heart in the playoffs, he was one of the better players out there. But if they want to get faster, I can’t see him adding to that, he looks like he’s moving backwards.
Id say letting pretty much all these guys walk is good idea, Naslund retiring is a great start. If they can buy out Redden that would be incredible too. It may be too much to ask, but can they buy out Rosival too?
Size...
I don’t know why Ranger fans get hung up on size. Its about finding talent. Hugh Jessiman was a huge waste because he was better than players using just his body, not his talents. As we all know, the Rangers walked over 10+ great young players now because Sather loves a giant power forward.
If the kid/guy can play, I don’t care how big he is, make it happen.
zherdev must stay.
i agree that his level of play decreased in the playoffs and he admits it but this was his first run. callahan, staal, dubinsky and korpedo (was called up mid-playoffs) all had a lengthy playoff run last year and obviously stepped up their game accordingly, i believe nik will do the same next year with the experience gained.
he’s 24 years old, and it would be a shame to throw away such talent at such an early stage of his career. his speed & skill will work for him once he adjusts to the new system, he could bring in 70-75 pts this year.
nice job RR
I have a feeling Zherdev will price himself out of the Rangers market, but we’ll see.

I think its very naive to think Redden is going to be bought out. Sather has never shown himself the type to admit his mistakes, and who even knows if he thinks it was a mistake at all?
I can easily see a conversation in the offseason between the coaches and the managements – “sure Wade had a rough year, but he picked up his play in the Caps series. Lets see how he comes to training camp, and see how he does if feels he’s challenged by someone like Gilroy.” The more likely outcome is that Redden is treated like Kasparaitis – Given a shot to redeem himself, on a short leash, and then waived down to the minors if he doesnt work out.

Zherdev & Antropov
The Rangers need to keep Zherdev; even though he is not a home grown talent the Broadway Blues must stop the pattern of getting rid of our young guns with potential and watching them become stars for someone else. Give Torts a year to develop or undress the kid as he has too much potential to let him get away. As for Antropov this one is more difficult. Yes he has size but I have embalmed people who move faster! He has hockey skills, but based on the make-up of the team’s new faces I can see this one going either way. Would like to see how he responds to Torts for a year as well…
zherdev should stay
i like the guy he is a threat always on the ice and can score big goals but i guess he needs help thats why the rangers shoould sign or trade for kovalchuck or sign marian gaborik theee end
