Chris Drury for Patrick Marleau? Thoughts from Puck Daddy
Greg Wyshynski, AKA "Puck Daddy" gets the Hot Stove chatter going today with a suggestion that could mutually benefit the Ranger and Sharks:
Trading Chris Drury for Patrick Marleau.
some of the highlights from the story:
Marleau has been fantastic in the regular season in three of the last four campaigns. As Blueshirt Banter notes in giving Drury at "B-minus" for the season, his point total dropped for the fourth straight season but he continues to do some little things right for the Rangers.
(you'll notice Puck Daddy gave us a nice little plug there, thanks Greg!)
Another highlight:
The deal would make financial sense for the Rangers, jettisoning a contact that -- in hindsight -- is regrettable, in exchange for a pending UFA. You don't like losing a character guy like Drury; but Marleau in a John Tortorella system could be a revelation, if the pressure of playing in New York doesn't crush his soul.
Just to make this clear: Not a rumor, just a bit of hot stove League banter we wanted to toss out there. Maybe this trade makes more sense in theory than in practice. Chances are one or both fan bases won't be happy with it. But on its surface, it makes some sense for both teams.

Easier said than done…
Also, even if this did happen, Marleau isn’t exactly easy to replace if he walked after a contract year.
worry about the 2010 season in 2010. If this deal were to happen, alot could change in a year.

They could also...
work on extending Marleau’s contract before he became a UFA.

And everyone calls Marleau a dog out there, so we want another half-hearted player here? As disappointing as Drury has been, a soft frenchman isn’t the answer. Marleau can’t kill penalties the way Dru can and has no idea of what his own zone looks like. Marleau for Gomez might be a better alternative …

Let's Go Rangers!
Big picture
this trade goes down and the Rangers have the cap space to sign Kovalchuk next summer. even if they don’t sign him, the Rangers can build a better team then they have right now with Drury w. that extra $7 million in space.
If the clap was offered for Gomez I think you’d take it. He had a mediocre season yeah. But he doesn’t have the tools around him to succeed. There is no scorer to on his wing to set up. Jagr wasn’t a fit and there’s a good reason for that, they’re very very different styles.
At the very least though, Gomez is plausible. Drury will never waive his NTC.

Nice.
Don’t be so sure Drury wouldn’t waive his NTC

I’m pretty sure the last thing Drury would want to do is burden this franchise by refusing to waive his NTC, leading to a backlash from the fans. I’m not a Marleau fan, but we don’t need to keep him…the Rangers must acquire Kovalchuk, originally I thought that there were some players on the team that were untradable (Callahan, Duby, Staal) but after watching this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2US4iaPjag&feature=related … I’d be willing to give up anything.

if it was this easy to make trades, this would be a no brainer - simply because of age, production and cap hit.
Drury’s getting paid for his reputation and a little league game he pitched 20 years ago. Marleau’s scored more playoff goals – 32 – and more GW playoff goals – 10, then anyone else since 2002.
Marleau’s and Drury’s career stats, on a per game basis, are nearly identical.
Regular Season:
Marleau: .31 GPG, .38 APG, .70 PPG.
Drury: .30 GPG, .42 APG, .73 PPG
Marleau: 53 GWG in regular season, career
Drury: 46 GWG in regular season, career.
Marleau: career +/- : 1
Drury: career +/-: 2
Playoffs:
Marleau: .37 GPG, .27 APG, .67 PPG
Drury: .36 GPG, .31 APG, .67 PPG
Marleau: 10 GWG in playoffs, career
Drury: 17 GWG in playoffs, career.
Calling Drury a better penalty-killer is as subjective a comment as you can make. Marleau scored 5 SHG this year – and has a career total of 7. Drury scored 1 SHG this year, and has a career total of 8. Marleau has a positive BehindtheNet rating shorthanded; Drury has a negative rating.
All this goes to show that, statistically, you have two players who cannot be more similar. So any difference between the two boil down to subjective factors – “leadership”, “winner”, “clutch”. These are the subjective factors that I would argue have gained Drury a more positive “reputation” than Marleau.
Big deal. I’ll trade a subjective reputation for equal on-ice production, cap space, and a younger player any day.

Rangers Need Cap Space
And i’ve never been a fan of Drury. I’d accept the trade just for the simple fact that Drury would be gone. Plus with the cap space maybe the rangers could make some more moves and bring the Sedin brothers, or maybe even Gaborik who would be terrific for John Torts and the rangers.
Gaborik is brittle, and is going to want too much money. His talent is undeniably tempting, but I think the Rangers need to avoid him like the plague

Id love to trade Drury's contract
But the fact remains he’s still a good player to have on the team. I know he doesn’t play up to his contract, but that’s more of the people around him. He had guys like Daniel Briere and Brian Campbell playing with him in Buffalo, he has none of those types in NY.
Surround him with some better talent, then we’ll see.
Marlueu is like Joe Thornton, there’s a reason these guys fail year after year in the playoffs. Its not like the Sharks don’t have a good Goalie or defense either.
Drury’s numbers this year were well within his “normal” career range, +/- 10% In fact, he had the 5th most Assists of his career. He may have had better teammates in Buffalo from an offensive perspective, but he didn’t benefit from it from it that significantly.
2008-9: .27 GPG, .41 APG, .69 PPG.
Career: .30 GPG, .42 APG, .73 PPG

I think I'd do it
Marleau is a bit better offensively, Drury is a bit better defensively, Marleau’s contract comes off the books after 2009-10.
