Trade Specs: Dany Heatley and Jason Smith for Nikolai Zherdev, Michael Rozsival and 1st Round Pick

Pure Speculation

In light of the news that Dany Heatley wants the Senators to trade him, I couldn't help but put together my own proposal for the sniper that the Rangers so desperately need. Heatley wanting a trade could not have come at a better time for the Rangers because in this economy, Heatley probably will not give the top dollar return he would have otherwise due to the $35 million he has remaining on his contract. Because of this the Senators are probably going to have to take back salary in return in order to move Heatley.

Now I am definitely getting ahead of myself, but my proposal would be Heatley and Jason Smith for Michal Rozsival, NikolaiZherdev, and the Rangers 1st round pick in this years draft. There is no need to go through Heatley's accolades and what he could mean for the Rangers. He is the pure scorer they desperately need and (keep those fingers crossed) would be a nice fit on Gomez's wing. Jason Smith has one year and $2.25 million left on his contract and would serve as a salary dump for the Sens. Michael Rozsival would be a nice addition to their blueline and although he has 3 years and $15 million left on his contract, he would be the Rangers shift in salary in the trade.

Nikolai Zherdev would be the center piece. He has a ton of talent and in the right situation he could become as prolific of a goal scorer as Heatley is. Zherdev is RFA and would need to be signed for anything above or equal too $3.75 million since he's owed a 10% increase in salary. Part of Zherdev's problem in New York was most likely Tom Renney's extremely defensive system that surely had an effect on his offensive output (it effected every players numbers this past season). Zherdev is only 25 years old and could flourish playing with Jason Spezza and even more so with a veteran like Daniel Alfredsson who might break Nikky's habit of taking games off.

Salary wise, the Senators would shed a $1 million while the Rangers would gain $1 million (if Zherdev makes $3.75 million next season). At this point the Rangers would absolutely have to waive Wade Redden because that extra mil. would put an even greater strain on their cap. With Heately, the Rangers have added the offense they need and have found a winger to play alongside Gomez. They've lost Rozsival and have now opened another roster spot for one of their young defenseman.

The Sens would also get the Rangers 1st round pick in the upcoming draft and could also take a prospect such as Michael Sauer, Dale Weise, Dane Byers, or Corey Potter. This proposal is obviously a pipe dream and is getting way ahead of itself considering news of Heatley wanting a move is still fresh. But I just don't have anything better to tod

Good trade but........

Okay i will agree with you it would be a great trade and we would get the scorer we would need but like you said we’d have to bring up another young defensemen. Yeah we got some great ones down in the ahl ready to come up but it would take at least a year to get them into a postion where they’d be anywhere near useful in a playoff series. And this is just a personal oppion, but i think Zherdev under Torts would actually become the scorer we would need. Maybe not Heatly, but given the chance under Torts who, is a more offensive couch could bring out the scorer in Zherdev. Although he could just end up being another Kovalev, showing bits and pieces of an un-tapped talent and never actually getting it out.

Certainly an interesting proposal there, though I think word through the grapevine is that Heatley wants Weastern Conference. In any case, certainly something that would be worth looking at from both teams perspective.

Certainly from Ottawa’s perspective it would be a way to salvage a bad situation with some potential to rebuild for the future by replacing their players with younger parts that could be of use 2-3 years down the road for a cup run.

From the Ranger’s perspective however I would worry about the blueline if both Redden and Rozsival were gone. Its true that they are pretty well disliked in NY, but they still are the best D men the rangers have at moving the puck up the ice. Granted Gilroy and Sanguinetti could fill those roles but throwing them both in to do it might be asking a bit much.

Also, waiving Redden handicaps the Rangers for a long time in terms of cap space, so in my opinion the smart move is to give him another year to work it out and if he declines waive him next year in time for the cap decrease.

Another way to clear cap space could be to let Antripov walk and call up Anisimov to be the third line center. Gilroy would then take the vacant position at D from Morris.

From the forwards point of view, I am a big Zherdev fan and think that he will work it out eventually and become a star, but given the opportunity to get heatley, you have to do it.

It would be a bit of an issue losing two veteran defenseman. But with the cap space from waiving Redden, the Rangers could then re-sign Morris, Mara or go out and get Nik Boynton, Hal Gill, or maybe even Mike Komisarek. But this is obviously a whole bunch of BIG IFS..

Waiving Redden doesnt strap the cap it actually compleatly

takes him off the cap … it doesnt work like a buy out. He just gets wiped off. Yeah the Rangers still need to pay him but his cap hit is 0 and Dolan has money to spend …

Ha you are completely right, I guess I had a brain fart when I said that. IF I am not mistaken though, the Rangers would still have to have half his cap hit if Redden were claimed.

by scunge on Jun 11, 2009 11:36 PM EDT up reply actions

only if he is claimed on recall waivers

which is if they tried to bring him up again … which they wouldnt … i hope

Agreed

Scunge is right, waiveing Redden would tie us down for the long run, and tmranger is also right losing two Veteran D’s would hurt us also in the long run. Throwing anyone of our young guys into the frying pan this year would be a utter failure. We wouldn’t have anyone for them to learn from. Yeah Staal and Girardi are coming along great but they just don’t have the experience to be the top D’s yet. Keep Rozsival and lose Redden, at least your keeping one Vet. to help the new guys at least for a year.

by ReverseLife on Jun 11, 2009 12:02 AM EDT reply actions

losing two mediocre veteran defenseman does not hurt the team in the long run. it hurts for next season, maybe, considering redden was by far their worst defenseman

by John Merrigan on Jun 11, 2009 10:31 AM EDT up reply actions

love this idea

and then bury Redden. THey may be veterans, but they are not very good veterans.

Id rather call up some of the kids on D and see if they’re ready, guys like Girardi and Staal played well in their rook seasons, why not the other guys?

I have no problem trading Zherdev too. He’s just a waste of talent. There’s been countless numbers of players with his skill that played like he does. I say good riddence (if this should so happen.)

Not giving enough for Heatley.

Trade and Waivers

1. I would love to have Heatley, but I think the Sens would want way more than what you offered. Rosival, Zherdev, 1st Round Pick and Dubinsky sounds more like it. I am Dubinksy’s biggest fan, and would still do this deal in a heartbeat. We unload two salary cap “headaches” and free up some cap space if you combine what we pay Rosival and what Dubinsky will get in a new contract. (I am assuming about 3-4 million?)

2. Redden wont be waived… he still has about 30 million left on his contract. I dont care how deep Dolans pockets are, 30 million is 30 million. It doesnt make any sense business-wise, and Dolan/Sather run the team as a business. We all need to stop dreaming, we are stuck with him for at least 2 more years before we even consider waivers or a buyout.

by jcuervo96 on Jun 11, 2009 8:55 AM EDT reply actions

Zherdev’s a tough sell for me as a centrepiece of the deal. Sure, Roszival could offer a nice addition to the Sens blue line, but Ottawa doesn’t really need another mid-level offensive defenceman; they need a good to elite one.

Trading Heatley has the possibility of rounding out the Senators’ offensive ranks, so I think coming back to Ottawa will be a couple good forwards, or at least the cap room to sign some good free agents.

by Peter Raaymakers on Jun 11, 2009 9:15 AM EDT reply actions

With this proposal, I’m banking on the fact that there wont be a lot of teams capable of trading for him because of his contract. It’s not an ideal trade for the Sens Rozsival is included for cap reasons

by John Merrigan on Jun 11, 2009 10:32 AM EDT up reply actions

I also think the Senators would want more than this but I think this at least a reasonable starting point. And props to you for including even minimal discussion on the cap issues related to this. Too many fans just throw names out, without even attempting to understand the cap issues associated with these deals.

take it with a grain of salt. one pissed off canadian wrote that. yeah he asked to be traded from 2 different teams. but with atlanta it was for a very legitimate reason and he cannot be blamed for that. so really it’s one team and it just so happens its the Sens and this guys furious.

but to answer your question, yeah i still want him, id rather have him than Marian Gaborik’s inevitably exploding groin

by John Merrigan on Jun 11, 2009 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions

wow...

the Isles had Zdeno Chara, Luongo, Olli Jokinen, and more than likely Jason Spezza….

And Mike Milbury is an analyst…..

I don’t know about Heatley== Yashin tho. Yashin had really 2 good seasons toward the end of his Sens career. Heatley has pretty much been a point + per game for his career when healthy.

I don’t think The Isles will trade for anyone either, they are dead set on rebuilding from within (which is a good thing, but F the Isles…)

by FreeBradshaw on Jun 11, 2009 4:23 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah that is not a fair comparison at all. i really like the direction the Isles are going in, as much as I hate them, I have to say they’re doing it right so far.

Devils

I would take Redden off your hands! Its always an upgrade from Mottau or Greene and especially Colin White!!!

If they trade a 50 goal scorer, they will want one back

Just saying, I dont think a 1st round draft pick or Nik Zherdev will satisfy thier hunger. They want to improve and improve now, not have to wait for a draft pick or for a player like Zherdev to flourish. Plus, he’ll be a career 30 goal guy nothing more. Mark my words and if I am wrong, may he still be a Ranger. Haha.

by Dekim19 on Jun 12, 2009 8:41 AM EDT reply actions

of course it won’t but with Heatleys no movement clause and his large contract, they’re not completely in the driver seat. They’re not getting a 50 goal scorer back
