Heatley Could Be Moved Sooner Rather Than Later

According to Bruce "Malkin To LA" Garrioch, Dany Heatley's contract stipulates that if he is a Senator on July 1st, owner Eugene Melnyk is on the hook for $4 million even GM Bryan Murray trades Heatley later in the summer or during the season.

The heat is on the Senators to trade Dany Heatley by Canada Day or it could be costly.vTwo league executives confirmed to Sun Media yesterday that if the high-scoring winger isn't dealt by July 1, Senators owner Eugene Melnyk will be on the hook to pay Heatley a whopping $4-million bonus (all terms US), even if he doesn't play for Ottawa next season.

Heatley has completely handcuffed the Sens due to the timing of his trade demand and the fact it's public. His $4 million bonus significantly lowers his trade value during the upcoming draft where trades are likely to happen. Why would a prospective trade partner make a move for Heatley before July 1st when they can save themselves $4 million after that date? That is the problem that is going to face Murray. As a Rangers fan this can be looked at two ways: The Rangers can wait like most teams likely will until after July 1st to try and pull the trigger on a trade. Or they can use the $4 million as leverage since James Dolan has such deep pockets and the Rangers will have some extra cash since they've raised ticket prices.

The Canadian media seems ready to crucify Heatley and with good reason. I'm completely opposed to players making 'trade demands', Heatley must think he's in the NFL and his name Dany UnoCinco. I'd be absolutely livid if I were a Sens fan. But as Rangers fan I see this as an opportunity. The Rangers can get Heatley for a steep discount if they act at the trade deadline. With $4 million dollars hanging over Murray and Melnyk's heads, they will probably be willing to move Heatley for less. This is where a trade fo Rozsival, Zherdev and a draft pick is very possible. Sather should use this as leverage to get the sniper the Rangers need at a discount.

Those who question his character have good reason. But the Rangers have put themselves in a situation where their won't be a perfect solution. Heatley has a big contract and has demanded trades from two teams. But then again, Marian Gaborik has a ticking time bomb for a groin and a deal with him could be even more worthless than Wade Redden has been for the Rangers.

Completely agree with everything said in this article. Sather can certainly use the $4 million signing bonus against the Sens and, like you said, it will force them to make a deal ASAP out of desperation. The Zherdev/Rozsival/Pick for Heatley trade seems quite logical. The Rangers may not be forced to take back another big contract (ie. Jason Smith) if they can secure a deal with Ottawa prior to July 1.

I could honestly care less about the guy's character

It merely seems that he wants to leave the Senators is all anyway. He doesn’t need to come in and be the “C” either, the Rangers have other guys for that.

All they need is scoring, and Heately likes to do that. Plus getting rid of Rosival, and Zherdev’s carcass?

If the Rangers really are magicians they’ll even do it without giving up a first rounder.

Considering alternatives like Gaborik, or Marian Hossa (not a good fit IMO), Id love to do it.

Id say #1 on the Rangers list still should be Kovalchuck, or at least to ask. Maybe compare what they’d give up for him first too. Kovalchuk is better cuz he’s more like an Ovechkin, he plays some D (not a PK guy, but some D, Healtley does none of that.)

Once again New York is trying to buy a championship……. Sorry but look at Tampa Bay last season.

by rolston12 on Jun 12, 2009 4:28 PM EDT reply actions

Well actually

Heatly is a component the Rangers badly need. I wouldnt call that "buying" a championship at. Its not like they are taking him because hes a big name …

how exactly does that make sense? its a trade for a player the Rangers NEED. He still young, he still produces, he scored 39 goals.. in a DOWN year.

How is making a trade to fill a need buying a championship? You seem to be lost, Newark is that way, just beyond the cesspool….oh wait, that is Newark

Really because you guys said were going to spend a ton of money on Hossa, Sign Gaborik, now get Heatley? How do you think Sather is going to sign the players on the team now? TEAM CHEMISTRY. You keep buying half the market every year you team is going downhill. C’mon Aaron Voros last year?? You realize you team finished 5th two season ago and now almost didn’t make the playoffs. Gomez, Drury, and Redden were all mistakes. Now your going to sign Hossa who is a mistake in the playoffs, Gaborik who is injury prone and Heatley. A 40 million dollar Heatley. Add Gomez’s salary, Drury’s, and Redden’s. You guys must be crazy throwing 39 million at Redden.

by rolston12 on Jun 13, 2009 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions

the doors to your right, when you have something real to say let us know. your example of buying the market is aaron voros? really? you think rangers fans don’t know gomez/drury/REDDEN were mistakes?

by John Merrigan on Jun 13, 2009 2:38 PM EDT up reply actions

The same thing will happen with Gaborik. He is going to get injured and turn out to be like a Carl Pavano. Then you will call him a mistake. How about Hossa… He will win a cup with NY, he didn’t do it with Detroit of all teams. What makes you think he’s going to do it in the playoffs???? And Heatley… I’m sure he’s going to want to get th hell away from Glen Sather.

by rolston12 on Jun 14, 2009 7:37 PM EDT up reply actions

why are they getting Heatley Gaborik AND Hossa?

Only one will do.

This team is a sniper away from being legit with the way the defense/Lundqvist played.

Im sure you know that without Zach Parise the Devils would have had a regular season just as up and down as the Rangers right?

The Rangers have no Parise, not even a Brain Gionta. They need scoring.

Why the hell would they get all 3 of these guys anyway? Where the hell did you come up with that anyway?

by FreeBradshaw on Jun 14, 2009 12:10 PM EDT up reply actions

It seems every time someone says something good about Gaborik you guys are the first to say he would be great for the rangers. Than Hossa than Heatley oh he would be great for the rags!!! Brian Gionta a scorer???? He keeps falling every year in goals. Oh yeah 20 goals is like a leading goal scorer every year for you sorry…..

by rolston12 on Jun 14, 2009 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh yeah and if we didn’t have Parise we would be fine this season. Look at our REAL TEAM with Patrik Elias, Brian Rolston, John Madden, Dainus Zubrus, Jamie Langenbrunner, and Travis Zajac. I’m sure we can do better than the Rangers every year. Actually I NO WE ARE A BETTER TEAM THAN YOURS. You can’t even keep your captain in Jagr. He traveled to friggin Europe to get away from you guys…. I never seen a Captain do that before congratulations!

by rolston12 on Jun 14, 2009 7:34 PM EDT up reply actions

That makes no sense

whatsoever. The Devils would be battling it out for 6th place without Parise.

And yes, every time someone says something good about Gaborik, people say that he might be ok for th Rangers for the right price. OR Hossa. OR Heatley.

But we all know that Gaborik is probably a bad idea. Hossa sucks. Its really a guy like Heatley that would be nice. Kovalchuk would be nice too

I really don’t think anyone at least on this site has ever said anything about getting all 3.

Its simple, the Rangers have no scoring, they needs a player to score. I don’t get where you thought that we all want to get all 3.

Now go back to your swamp.

The Sens and Heatley signed this extension in 2007. How could it include a $4M bonus? I thought the CBA prohibited bonuses except for entry level contracts,“veteran” players coming back from long-term injuries (ie the Gaborik Rule), or guys over 35.

I’m not sure, my understanding is that the bonus is a component of his salary for next season

by John Merrigan on Jun 12, 2009 4:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Must be something tricky like that (though I take anything Garrioch says with a grain of salt). Section 50.2 of the CBA makes it pretty clear that players are limited in the types of bonuses they can receive. Section 11.16 of the CBA seems to prohibit teams sharing salary like the Rangers and Caps did with Jagr. See “Trades” discussion here. So if he’s traded, and has salary upcoming, then it should be the responsibility of the team that trades for him?

no actually not, that article sites a similar scenario when Bryan McCabe was traded. The Panthers ended up waiting until after a certain date so they wouldn’t have to pay him a bonus.

by John Merrigan on Jun 12, 2009 6:14 PM EDT up reply actions

id love to hear how thats possible – the only thing I can see in the CBA that allows for any “bonus” type payments are “deferred” payments, which can’t be paid until after the contract ended. Then again the thing is like 23904203948 pages, and if Sather’s not wasting his fishing time reading it, why should I?

Rozsival, Zherdev and a pick is NOT ENOUGH! It’s freaking Heatley!

by Dave Shapiro on Jun 12, 2009 10:50 PM EDT reply actions

yeah so? look at the circumstances.. it might take a little more than that, but they’re not going to get top dollar for him. not even close

by John Merrigan on Jun 13, 2009 12:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Actually Dave i think its more than enough

Ottawa needs defensemen badly, and they get one with a great shot (when he uses it) in Rozsival. Zherdev is a (budding if he wants to be) superstar who can easily score 25 goals a year (hey he scored 23 in a super defensive system).

Maybe a 4th rounder or something, but i do think that Ottawa would take this, especially with the information Manic is reporting in this story.

The Ranger Reporter - My Ranger Blog!

by Joe Fortunato on Jun 13, 2009 8:26 AM EDT up reply actions

Thing is Dave's right

I mean if they were hell bent on sending Heatley to the Rangers, then yea it may be enough.

But the other NHL team probably will look at Heatley too and teams like the Kings have a ton of young talent.

by FreeBradshaw on Jun 13, 2009 1:05 PM EDT up reply actions

the kings do, but they’re not going to part with anything more than frolov to get him, especially since this Pronger trade cud go through for all we know. jack johnson would be the center piece of a deal going to the Sens

by John Merrigan on Jun 13, 2009 2:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Trade a 40 goal scorer every year for a 25 goal scorer???? Doesn’t make any sense.

by rolston12 on Jun 13, 2009 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions

neither has anything you’ve said thus far here

by John Merrigan on Jun 13, 2009 2:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Isn't the whole idea of

this that Heatley wants to be traded?

by FreeBradshaw on Jun 14, 2009 12:11 PM EDT up reply actions

If you add Girardi to that deal, then yes, they will take it, maybe.

You don’t think they are in talks with LA for Jack Johnson? Or SJ for Marleau? If you were Ottawa’s GM, which deal would you take there? Rozsival or JJ? The choice is clear.

by Dave Shapiro on Jun 13, 2009 11:21 AM EDT reply actions

Marleau is useless in the PLAYOFFS. Isn’t that what you guys all want. How many centers do you need??? Why do you think San Jose is losing in the first round every year? They don’t have leadership in Marleau and he doesn’t produce. Yeah he could get you in the playoffs but no deep in the playoffs.

by rolston12 on Jun 13, 2009 1:55 PM EDT up reply actions

You really want Jack Johnson? Unproven, -42, 3 pp goals in his career Jack Johnson? The same Jack Johnson who is seeking a contract similar to Rozival? The same Jack Johnson who is known for attitude problems of his own?

Zherdev isn’t a throw in either, if you read my article, Rozsival was a necessity in the deal to clear cap.

by John Merrigan on Jun 13, 2009 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions

My point is that you have to consider both a) what other teams are considering, and b) if the opposing GM would take the deal. I would love to have Heatley, but the Rangers need to offer up something bigger than a troubled winger, a mediocre defenseman and a pick.

I’m thinking Girardi, AA/Grachev (one of), a pick, and then some salary (Gomez), and maybe the rights to Zherdev.

by Dave Shapiro on Jun 13, 2009 11:23 AM EDT reply actions

some salary with Gomez? adding gomez makes the deal moot unless the Sens want to take back more salary than they give, which they absolutely will not.

by John Merrigan on Jun 13, 2009 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions

heatley to rangers??

if sather does not pull this off he is brain dead the rangers have not drafted well since the early 90,s so lets give them this years draft pick along with zherdev and rosival will the senators bite or will they want to bite on dubinsky staal or callahan????

by lohaus#54 on Jun 13, 2009 11:28 AM EDT reply actions

Not drafted well since the early 90's???

What do you call Dubinsky, Callahan, Staal, and a developing Del Zotto in the minors? If you don’t see them in a Rangers uniform doesn’t mean they aren’t producing in the minors. Why would you give them your first round pick when you have a chance to draft somebody good because you barely made it in the playoffs!!!!!!

by rolston12 on Jun 13, 2009 1:57 PM EDT reply actions

al montoya, hugh jessiman, and dont even get me started on the 90’s

by John Merrigan on Jun 13, 2009 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Don't think so...

I think you might be over-valuing the $4-million bonus. The Sens are owned by billionnaire Eugene Melnyk, who’d surely rather eat the $4M than ruin his team with that awful deal. If you’re familiar with Sens GM Murray, he’s not exactly trigger-happy and will probably get the OK from Melnyk to let Heatley sit until a good deal, involving some genuine blue-chip prospects, can be had.
