Rangers News: Ottawa Sun says Rangers on Heatley's Wish List
As we've talked about before, Dany Heatley has a list of teams he would prefer to be traded to. According to today's Ottawa Sun, the Rangers are one of the teams on that list.
Some highlights from the story:
Senators GM Bryan Murray expects talks will heat up this week at the NHL draft in Montreal as several league sources confirmed Heatley’s agents have given the club a wishlist of up to 10 teams. But there could be some flexibility — he may agree to go somwehere not listed. Sources told Sun Media the Los Angeles Kings, New York Rangers, San Jose Sharks, Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Blackhawks, Vancouver Canucks and Boston Bruins were among the teams submitted to Murray by Heatley’s agents J.P. Barry and Stacey McAlpine.
it’s believed discussions have been held with the Kings, Rangers, Sharks and Canucks. Sources say Minnesota, Colorado, Edmonton and St. Louis are taking a serious look, too.
Now we all know that salary is going to have to be moved in order to make this deal happen for the Rangers. A tall order, without a doubt, but I think just the fact that discussions may have been held is a good sign.
Also, this is from TSN:
There are teams calling the Ottawa Senators about forward Dany Heatley and general manager Bryan Murray expects talks to continue at the NHL Entry Draft this weekend.
He told reporters that there is one team getting close to an offer that would interest him, but it is not where he wants it to be at this point. While Murray knows it would be difficult to get full value for his sniper, he says the cost to another team will still be steep.

Heatley
Jim,
It is an interesting development and the Blueshirts clearly need a finisher. Do you, however, really see a match between the Sens or Rangers? Is there a third party that would take on some of the larger contracts? I also wonder if we have seen a pattern of Heatley flaming out with his clubs/cities. His departure from Atlanta was quite understandable given the circumstances, but the situation in Ottawa is a bit of an eye-opener. No?

Well Reginald (Welcome to the Banter by the way!)
If you dont mind another writer for the Banter to answer your question:
I think that if the Rangers were to make this deal Rozival and Zerdev would be involved. Thats roughly 8 million dollars in contracts. Obviously the thought process is that Redden would also have to be waived, thus making room to re-sign Mara or Morris or both so that we have a steady core of defense along with Staal and Girardi. If Redden is waived wave goodbye to another 6.5 million.
As for Heatley’s departure it does kind of make sense. Ottawa is hockey crazy (like New York) but the media truly blamed him for the Senators downfall.
Look there will be pressure in New York, and they will see him as a savior. But at the end of the day he still scores all the times, and i would take his complaining, wouldnt you?

The other side of the coin...
Many thanks, Joe, for the reply and the welcome.
I guess the biggest question is not so much as to whether or not we want Heatley, but whether the Rangers represent a fit. Some of the Western conference teams (LA, San Jose) offer more attractive options than a package featuring the likes of Roszival and Zherdev, both of whom I like, but do not come all that close to replacing Heatley’s production for the Senators. I suspect the Rangers’ best chance at nabbing Heatley will arise if Bryan Murray gets a bit desperate to trade him before the $4 million hit on July 1st.
If – and this is a real big if, I think – the Rangers trade Roszival and Zherdev (plus?) for Heatley and waive Redden (is there a cap hit there?), who mans the blueline along with Staal, Girardi, Mara, and Morris? Do you plug both holes with a combination of Potter, Sauer, and Sanguinetti? [I assume and hope Del Zotto is not a real candidate for 2009-10.] Or do you see any decent and attractive fits (for Tortorella’s system) on the free agent market? And who mans the beleaguered power play?
Fun times.

Reginald
There is no cap hit if Redden is waived. The way it works is that Redden would get sent down, and the Rangers would have to pay him his 6.5 million dollars but none of it is on the cap.

I think it’s worth noting that the media did not blame Heatley for the Senators’ downfall. If you want to see the scapegoat for the past two years, you have to look at Jason Spezza. Until Heatley demanded the trade, he was, somehow, rarely interviewed or spoken about.
Ultimately, I have a very hard time figuring out what the Rangers can offer the Senators. You can offer us skilled players, but not necessarily the ones we want and on contracts that we really cannot accept.
I could really almost care less what the Ranges give up for this guy
I mean, i like all teh young players and all. Id think they don’t give up ALL of them, but to be honest even guys like (its really hard to admit this BTW cuz I really liek all the Rangers young playes…no homo.) Dubinsky, Callahan, Korpikowski, Girardi.
I mean Id think that guys like Staal or Animisov or Grachev or even Sanguinetti might untouchable, but to part with one of them (preferably NOT Staal) + a guy like Callahan (….tough one there) and then some salary?
We’re talking about a guy who LIKES TO SCORE GOALS!!! On a Rangers team that DOESN"T like to score goals, Id be willing to give up some players that might hurt the farm a bit, but still its really not like Healtley is over the hill either.
The Rangers have the potential to be an elite team for a long time, mainly because of Lundqvist. They haven’t found a consistent scorer, and Id have no problem offering up the unknown of a prospect for the known of a elite scorer.
I like building from within as much as anyone, but this Rangers team has the scaffold to be an elite team, they just cannot wait around to see if these guys area actually stars.
