Cya Later Nik Antropov

NY Post

Sather meanwhile categorized the contract demands from impending unrestricted free agent Nik Antropov, whom the Blueshirts acquired from Toronto at the deadline for a second-round pick, as "ridiculous."

"Based on the first volley from [agent] Mark Gandler, there is a slim chance [of Antropov returning]," the general manager said following the fifth round of the Entry Draft. "There's a snowball's chance in hell that's going to happen. It's ridiculous. I hate to criticize an agent, but let's have a little bit of reality here."

Antropov, who scored seven goals in 18 regular-season games for the Blueshirts but was barely a factor in the first-round defeat by Washington, earned $2.05 million last year. He's believed seeking a long-term deal for at least $5 million per. Good luck to him.

Most saw this one coming. Antropov was coming off a career year and was bound to ask for an inflated contract from the Rangers. I was furious when the Rangers traded for Antropov with their 2nd round pick in this years draft for this exact reason. Antropov helped them get into the playoffs no doubt, but everyone knew there would be no happy ending for the Rangers. As constructed last season, the Rangers were bound for a one and done playoffs. At the time of the trade, it was a foregone conclusion that the Rangers could not fit Antropov under the cap next season. So in the end, instead of the Rangers having two second round picks and adding more quality youth to their system, they have zero to show for it.

If Glen Sather, the same person who deemed Wade Redden to be worth a $39 million contract thinks Nik Antropov's contract demands are 'ridiculous', well all I have to say is Good Luck Antro.

I believe the offer was $3.5 million. The CBA states that the minimum qualifying offer is to be a 10% raise on the player’s current salary. Zherdev made $3.25 million last season, so $3.5 is 10% more.

Wait a sec, what happened to the post about qualifying Zherdev for $3.25, I swear this was here and this is what I commented on.

I’m going insane.

Im hoping for Heatley too

We need a scorer. If we do not get one, why even bother playing for a playoff spot. it will be one and done again.

Lopez wants it away, and it's hit deep to left center, Andruw Jones on the run, this one has a chance... home run!!, Mike Piazza!, and the Mets lead 3 to 2!!

if the Rangers even get they far

by Ryan McFadden on Jun 28, 2009 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Want no part of Heatley

This team cannot afford Heatley financially or roster wise. Ottawa doesnt want any of our awful contracts so where are we going to get another 7.5 million to pay him and to get him they want Staal + Dubi or Cally. No thanks.

by mleetch352 on Jun 28, 2009 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah sure, they want him, but they wont get them. the sens have no power right now, no leverage, murray is going to have to swallow his pride and move him form some draft picks and a prospect or two

by Ryan McFadden on Jun 29, 2009 12:02 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

and the ranger cap space

gives them just as little if not less because at least for the sens they have heatley and while he might not be happy there he will still have to play.

Really?!?

Glen Sather is going to lecture about irresponsible contracts?!? Really?!?

The Constant Upside...

There’s some more cap room.

by Rob Luker on Jun 28, 2009 7:50 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

yeah

but not that much considering he was a deadline deal, surely not enough to replace his production

by Ryan McFadden on Jun 28, 2009 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

something like that

but his cap hit was less than that for the Rangers b/c he was acquired mid season

by Ryan McFadden on Jun 28, 2009 9:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah

but i have to say i wish he wouldnt be a fool because i would have liked to have him back. He has a sick shot

rookies

how bout next year the give a artem anisimov and evgeny grachev a shot to show us what they can do. the solution is going to have to come from prospects and young payers

by kauf on Jun 29, 2009 12:28 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i would like that

but i dont see sather letting grachev break the lineup this year, at most he probably plays in hartford instead of back in brampton, ala what they did with artem this year. the same is probably true of MDZ, but things like this prospect camp if the MDZ’s and Grachev’s of the world can plant a seed before training camp to give them a more legit shot at this roster.

The rangers should be bringing at least 2-3 forwards and 2 if not 3 defensemen up from their system this year which will help to push the youth but also aid in the salary cap mess they have.

by mleetch352 on Jun 29, 2009 10:55 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

grachev might spend another year in brampton

by Ryan McFadden on Jun 29, 2009 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He should spend another year in Brampton

Dont rush the kid hes only 18, let him develop a little.

Plus i dont think he can play in the AHL

he could play in the ahl next season, whether or not thats best for him, idk. he certainly has the size, the speed and the skill to play in hartford

by Ryan McFadden on Jun 29, 2009 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i thought there was an age limit for the AHL which he didnt meet

which makes no sense because you can play in the NHL whenever the hell you want

I hate rentals

Second round picks are by my estimation pretty valuable, a lot more valuable than 25 games with Antropov. I’m starting to think this Sather guy doesn’t know what he’s doing.

Just a total waste....

of Henrik Lundqvist’s career. F-ing Sather….

by stonecoldcory on Jun 29, 2009 2:07 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Can we wait a little while before we start writing off Lundy’s career?

I know everyone isn’t too happy with Sather, but the bottom line is, the man still has the job, for better or worse. The best we can do is hope him and his team fix what’s wrong. I think they had a real strong draft, and based on his comments to the press on Saturday, Glen knows this is on him.

best news was torts today

talking about how he is not afraid of playing the young players and hopefully shipping out some of these overpaid ones. before everyone starts talking about redden he isnt going anywhere for at least another year. Gomez should be dealt for the sheer overpayment he gets but he would be valuable to a team like LA or STL. If they can also dump Rozy this team can remake itself this season.

The Sedin twins are asking i think a reasonable 5.25 a year for 80 pt scorers these days its a bargain. This team could take the money they save on Rozy and Gomer and get 160 pts of production a year for less money. The other move is to take a one year prove it deal with Gaborik on the big stage at around 5 mil. Sign Cally and Dubi long term probably can get each for 4 yrs 10 mil range.

Move Drury to wing, Artem becomes the 3rd line center, bring back mara if we still need another d-man.

Sedin-Sedin-Gaborik approx 16 mil total
Drury-Dubi-Cally approx 12 mil
Avery-Artem-Zherdev approx 6 mil
Korpo-Boyle-Byers 2 mil

Staal-Girardi 2.4 mil
Redden-Mara 8 mil
Gilroy-Potter/Sauer/Sangs/DelZotto 2.5 mil

Lundy 6.875
Vally 725K

If 3 of those kids are ready then dont pay mara his 1.5 mil

Forwards 36
D 13
G 7.6

total 56.6 mil if a young kid beats out mara thats basically 56 mil.
next year you dump redden in the ahl if he doesnt get any better. between him, gaborik and zherdev we will have 15 mil in salary that comes of where about 5 mil will go to raises for staal and girardi, 1 mil to grachev making the team, 1 to MDZ making it…which leaves 8 mil for a kovalchuck or gaborik if he proved it (wouldnt pay him that much, but that is what would be there to work with)

by mleetch352 on Jun 29, 2009 10:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well acutally mleetch352

The Sedins are asking for 5.25 million each, but for 12 years. Thats a hefty investment for both of them. Gaborik will be much more than 5.5 million dollars, he is hitting the open market and some team will overpay more than 5.5.

You are also assuming the Rangers trade Gomez for no salary back, which wont be the case. You cant trade 7.1 million a year for the next 5 years without taking something back. And the Rangers have made it pretty clear than Mara isnt coming back.

Plus Zherdev is gonna be around 3.5 avery is 1.9 which means that number will be a little higher which will put the Rangers over the cap.

I dont say this to put you down i say it to show everyone how bad this situation the Rangers are in is. They need to loose cap and do it soon.
